A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Worse Than Just One

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 21, 2021

Just a devastating loss. If you think all losses are created equal, well, you and I look at things differently.

I don’t trust our late inning guys. No trust. Maybe you guys grew up in a happy home filled with puppy dogs and candy corn. Your parents stayed together. Trust comes easy to you.

Not Big Flavor. No trust.

This loss was the equivalent to the loss that Pujols bomb WOULD have delivered had Sock Man not saved the day (and the season). Let’s see if this one has any lasting effect. I bet it does….

I do think some losses are worse than others, but for whatever reason that one didn’t hit me as an absolutely crushing loss that is going to keep us down on the mat for several games. Of course we can still lose these final two games, but that is just because the Dodgers simply have way better players than we do.
I’m not screaming for a closer either. Someone real good is going to cost us prospects, and I don’t want to see us pay that price. Someone below that level is going to be comparable to what we already have.
Rogers has been great. He blew a one run lead to the best team in baseball. Walk/Walk/Bomb was pretty jarring, but it happens.
Agree with Chi that Sherfy may have been a keeper.

Agree–with Crawford and Posey in clubhouse, I don’t see things falling apart. Giants have handled adversity pretty well all season. Nats outplayed them back there, Giants hammered them out here.
All signs point to 3 way dogfight. gonna be ups and downs…don’t get too excited either way. And keep an eye on that kid Gray too.

Yeah, by the 5th I had it in the ‘win’ column; and the 2 walks and the bomb at 1:15am or so was depressing, thinking I couldn’t get to sleep after that.
But that loss doesn’t reflect what the team is made of. I heard Yaz say recently that stuck with me, that no one player feels the weight of expected success and each pulls for each other. I’m sure Rogers is getting pulled up from despair by everyone on the team as that is the foundation and fabric of their success.
It’s what the guys at my card game yesterday, all Yankee fans, could not understand this kind of success coming from a ragtag bunch of no names and aged players….
No, IMO, even a loss like this is just one game.
My head is clear of that game.
    Hope I’m right.😲😬

Head-to-head games in division are always of more importance, but outside of that, I am more with Dennis. You cannot dwell on the past. Wash that shit off, rub some dirt on it, and get back after it…

Well this is a very cohesive team I guess they could weather this storm. A lesser connected team or one led by a dunderhead might be in trouble.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 21, 2021 at 10:05 am

I believe the players move on from losses quicker and easier than the fans do.
      Especially in the regular season…

I agree, Loo, and especially with this team.

We just need one of the next two to get a split. Getting a split is a huge win IMO. Taking the series is gravy. Mmmmm….gravy….

Why should closers nowadays have to be big strikeout guys?
They come in to get 3 outs with the bases empty.
They only needs strikeouts after they’ve gotten themselves in trouble.
The days of Gossage coming in with 2 on and nobody out in the 7th are long gone.
And even then an induced DP was better than a strikeout…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 21, 2021 at 10:20 am

Good point. think it’s just personal preference for hard thrower capable of blowing someone away with heat as opposed to more finesse guy. Out is an out no matter how you get 27 of them.
Issues yesterday (and for Gausman) were command of pitches–Wood missing spots when he tried to come inside and Rogers leaving meatball up to Smith.

  6. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 21, 2021 at 10:25 am

As far as closers go, I’ll take McGee over Jansen and Melancon. Another set up guy like maybe Hudson or Loo’s guy Barlow from KC for late inning depth, sure. Zero interest in Kimbrel or Hand.

I trust in Z to do what’s necessary. I think this entire season is “found money underneath the sofa cushions.” Conversely, Z, et. al. in the front office probably had another take 180 degrees different. So, who am I to say what he should do at the trade deadline? From day 1, the dude has produced and made more right decisions than “arm chair” GMs like myself.

I’ve always thought that prospects were ALSO chips to be dealt, i.e., they don’t have to necessarily pan out in your system to the parent MLB team. Consequently, whatever he decides – I am 100% supportive.

lest we forget, the pen shut down the Dodgers for 6 shutout 1 hit 1 BB innings in game 1 Monday in relief of Gausman, Giants ace that didn’t have it. That would be Littell Garcia Leone Jackson and McGee in order.

By the by, tip of my hat to Dennis and Stix for their optimistic projections prior to the season starting. Not certain (chime in if I am wrong), but they were the only Flappers thinking this team was going to have a winning record. Both of you dudes were spot on.

Like I said in the other thread before I realized there was a new one, this season is found money.

No one saw this coming, but it really shouldn’t change things that much. Our schedule has been fairly creampuffy and these next couple weeks will tell a lot what with these Dodger games, and the upcoming Houston series. We may have a better sense of where we stand once the deadline rolls around. But I sincerely hope they don’t give anyone away to chase a season that more than likely won’t end like we want.

That includes Bart, Ramos, Luciano, Bishop, and any number of solid prospects we now have. I get that they are bargaining chips, but this team is full of holes and throwing draftees at Kimbrel is a losing proposition that will only hurt future development.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 21, 2021 at 12:52 pm

Agree. I absolutely DO NOT want us to go “all in” on this season and mortgage the future. Z has a plan, part of which was to rebuild the farm and future. I

  11. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 21, 2021 at 12:40 pm

Starling Marte if the prospects aren’t to steep would be a huge addition to this outfield.
    211 AB’s .294 avg, 7Hr’s, 22 RBI’s, 19 SB, OPS .843 can play both CF and LF a Farhan type player!
Tauchman useless, Duggar now hitting .146 for July Marte doubles that avg,Dick&Ruf liabilities in the OF,Slater hot&cold.
If Ramos tears up AAA my new starting OF Aug 1st would be Ramos LF Marte CF Yaz RF

  12. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 21, 2021 at 12:55 pm

Kat – I saw multiple articles where it mentioned the Giants being one of the top teams interested in Marte. Agree that as long as the prospect ask is not too high, then go for it (he is a FA next year, so he would be a rental unless we inked him to a new contract).

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 21, 2021 at 1:00 pm

Tauchman should be gone. Dick strictly a bench guy. Slater and Duggar have till the deadline to prove any worth. Ruf should stay at 1st. He and Wade can platoon till Belt is jettisoned into McCovey cove.

Awkward instant, and the first player is jettisoned

    Webb 5 IP 1 hit 1 earned run 0 BBs 7 Ks
Urias 5 IP 11 hits 6 earned and bomb

  16. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 21, 2021 at 2:22 pm

Urias is beatable but Buehler will be tough to get more than a split. So glad I was sound asleep for last night after checking out at a 6-2 lead. It is odd that it seems when Rogers is just grooving pitches, right-handers seem to pick it up easily.

I have liked what I have seen from Jarlin Garcia at out of his last 9 appearances just 2 hits and one run…would like to see how gutsy he would be in a save situation.

I do not (think Marte is going to get Miami a lot of prospects). Marte is a FA at the end of the year, and he and the Marlins have already tried to work out a contract and failed. Miami has almost no leverage here. No way Z is going to “break the prospect bank” for Marte, etc., IMO.

I still think a starter is going to be the priority based on everything I have read to date.

Yaz will be the one drilled he easily leads the team in that category. Besides it’s easier for a lefty( Uranus ) to administer pain to a left hand hitter like Wood did to Muncy.Figure one in the back..

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 21, 2021 at 4:19 pm

I’d be shocked if they don’t drill someone, mainly because Turner was p.o.’d.
Yaz is the very likely target…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 21, 2021 at 3:53 pm

Turner got hit with off speed pitch from Wood, who kept missing trying to go inside with slider. cbs said pitch that hit him was 84, so it wasn’t fastball. Count was 3-2 iirc and he’d thrown slider outside for a strike. Just couldn’t locate inside one.
Muncy, same thing. Wood was trying to pitch inside and hit him mid back on shoulder, zero intent.
Roberts might be pissed, but I’d be surprised he tries anything. LaRussa he ain’t, I hope.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 21, 2021 at 5:47 pm

No. But I don’t want them to sell the farm either. This is a mirage. If they can get a couple pen arms and a bat on the cheap, go for it. Z is great at that anyway. I do NOT want them to believe that this team is one huge deal away from the WS.

    For LF Giants are 11th.
    CF 4th
    RF 3
    OF overall 5th.

I think you have to give Kap credit for managing who he has and putting them in best spots. Slater, for example, has very high OPS vs. LHP. So does Ruf for that matter. It’s what he does and Giants are at or near NL tops for runs scored per game. As Twin used to say, “warts and all.”

Reminded me that “Play Misty for Me”, the directorial debut of Eastwood, was released in 1971 — the fall per Wiki. Sheezus, 50 years ago. Really liked that movie. “Get off my back, Evelyn !” is a line I remember. Restaurant scene filmed at the Sardine Factory in Monterey. It’s still there. They had a great wine list last time I was there, prolly 20 years ago — super fish entrees…

That was the last movie they showed at the Fox Theater in San Mateo. Love all the Carmel/Monterey shots. Clint the DJ!

Giants need another homer or two. Looks like no chance they’ll put a few hits together with a walk or something to get a few in…

You want ugly? Hands down this guy Loo probably remembers is hands down the ugliest ball player.
Don Mossi who played for Cleveland in the mid 50’s to mid 60’s.
Had big bushy eyebrows, a nose the size of Karl Malden, and ears bigger then Dumbo.
He had a face even his mother slapped..

As I’m getting fucked up tonight, since I started posting on my phone from WordPress it shows random other blogs under this one, and my god there are a LOT of people who write insanely long crazy 150,000 word screeds on religion politics and navel gazing and any topic imaginable, and none of them have comments.

Urias is tough tonite–only 1 BB, hitting corners and getting breaking ball over.
Still couple innings left for Roberts to gift Giants an opportunity to win this.
