Bounce Back Win
Well it turns out all my handwringing was for nothing. “No trust”, “never forget”….yada yada. It almost seems like the hard lessons from my childhood have no impact on how the Giants play baseball at all! How could that be?
How could this be?

I’m not going to dream about what it would be like to be 3-0 this series. There’s no payoff in dreaming of things that never happened. I still don’t understand how they are doing any of this but I am enjoying the ride. Man, Twinfan would have loved this season, aye?
The question now isn’t are the Giants legit, but are the Dodgers?
Tonight it’ll be Buehler’s day off as we Disco down.
So what do I get for my 95 win prediction??? Lol!
Pulling off another improbable win tonight to take 3 of 4 may just dishearten these fuckers from SmelLA and their asterisk WS win from last year…
Yes, TF would be loving 2021. And I think he would have told others to calm down/ no need to be near ledge after an L.
Btw, dunno if others have different feeds for telecasts, but: on nbc sports bay area channels they still run btw innings promo that features Kuiper’s home run call. He’s yelling “High drive…it is Outta here!”
Heard it twice last night but no one is saying a word about him during broadcasts. Little eerie.
hmmnn
On KNBR post-game they do make a player of the game “pick” for Kuiper…
The booing of Jansen surprised me. That type of thing rarely happens in a west coast home crowd. Seemed strange.
yeah he’s not Armando benitez. Great of Kap to run Rogers back out there for some hair of dog recoup vs. RHs Smith Pollack Pujols. No issues no problems.
Smith Bellinger (LH) Pollack. Smith hit ball hard but routine flyout to Yaz.
“Cruelty is a gift humanity has given us”
Yes it’s coming to a sad ending for one of the great closers in this generation.
Jansen’s stuff is now hittable, the signature cutter is not cutting, control is shaky, walks and now bombs are killing him.So his loyal Dodger blue fans are not so loyal and booing him now, yes baseball can be a cruel game and it effects every team not just the hated Dodgers ..
Working for an LA firm now and those Flodger fans have turned on him…
it was only a great move by Kap because it worked out. Can you imagine the backlash had he given it up again? Our late inning guys are fine for an average team but if you want to go far in the PS we need more than McGee and Rogers
Such as? Dunno what games you’re watching, but 6 shutout innings Monday after Kap pulled Gausman and 4 no hit ones last night to Muncy n Co. And SF ain’t playing Pirates.
if Rogers had shit the bed two nights in a row you would be the only Giants fan in the world that would take that in stride
IF, I’m just asking, who do you want? Rogers and others have gotten job done.
IF it ain’t broke…
we’re not talking about Gott and Coonrod here.
Last year the Dodgers played 18 games in the playoffs, and recorded 6 saves. 2 by Jansen, and 1 each by Kelly, Treinen, Graterol, and Urias. Joe Kelly got the only save with a 1 run lead.
The frustration of the low rent Giants yet again denying LA its rightful, inevitable spot on top combined with the too cruel to be real kick in the balls 9th inning reversal had the LA fans uncharacteristically howling. Jansen seemed to take it like a true veteran. I don’t think he’s done. His stats are still very good, the 2021 walk total an anomaly.
think about $$ spent on Giants roster of guys on field bottom 9:
Tauchman GD Yaz Wilmet Thairo solano Wade Jr. Casali and Rogers.
Might not total up to $20 mil Dogs pay Jansen just for this season,
Depth to set up guys in pen OK. Big money closer, nah.
Yeah, the booing did seem a bit harsh even for those lowlife fans. Jansen was fresh off a blown save that led to a loss vs. the Rox his last time out on Sunday, so that probably had something to do with it. But prior to that, he hadn’t allowed a run since May 28 vs. the Giants in the Tauchman game.
That blown save Sunday was in Coors too. Baggs tweeted he hadn’t blown save vs. Giants at home since Sept. 2013.
i don’t follow relievers/closers and I’m not going to just list off guys from an ESPN list. I am ASSUMING there are better late inning guys than McGee and Rogers out there–and remember I am factoring in their workload not just looking at their production up to this point. Do you think those two fucking guys are going to be peaking in October? That’s fucking nonsensical thinking
those two guys got us this far but it’s time to hand the baton to some reinforcements. The giants have a legit shot to go all the way this year and it would be terrible if they fell apart because their relievers fell apart as the summer wore on
and Goddamn I’m not saying GET RID OF THEM. They’ve been good all things considered. But we need an anchor in the BP to make it through Sept and the PS
That was one helluva a bounce back win considering the disaster on Tuesday. It speaks volumes to the character of this team, no question. And kudos to Kapler for going back to Rogers and to Rogers for getting it done. That could have been ugly. Kapler is getting it done as the manager and improving all the time. He’s not perfect, but none of them are. Color me impressed, because he came in with a lot of baggage. Right now, he’s making Zaidi look great with that decision.
That loss still stings, though. They’d be going for the sweep tonight and would’ve at least picked up a game on LA, guaranteed. They can still do that, but beating Buehler is going to be tough. Anyway, great moment for Flores and the Giants. He crushed that ball. Both he and Yaz are heating up.
GO GIANTS!
I just saw that the A’s signed one of their draft picks, another guy named Max Muncy. If that report is accurate, it’s utterly bizarre. That can’t be a common name. Given the derision I have for the fat Dodgers’ version, let’s hope the A’s guy isn’t a born Giant killer. lol
More crazy the 2 Muncy’s share the same birthday..
No shit? That’s unbelievable.
I read the other day, I think it was Brady Klopfer, that the Giants have the best, or one of the best, bullpens since the beginning of June. Considering how they started, that’s a great turnaround. But they also have 18 blown saves, which speaks again, IMO, to their need for a lockdown closer. I agree with BF, that becomes more critical as the year wears on and the playoffs near.
Not wanting to mortgage the future is commendable, but does that mean you’re willing to bag a shot at winning another WS this year? If they can get someone like Kimbrel at a reasonable price, I say no. There’s no guarantee any of the current farmhands is going to pan our, including Ramos, Luciano or any of the others. They look good now, but the Giants’ recent history of prospects flaming out is not promising. I say go for it.
where does 18 blown saves rank? That sounds like a lot
That’s on the set-up guys, not the closers.
Saves can be blown before the 9th.
https://www.foxsports.com/mlb/team-stats?category=pitching&sort=w&season=2021&seasonType=reg&sortOrder=desc
You also have to be good enough to have numerous leads late in the game to “blow” lots of saves.
no shit a save can be blown before the 9th. You guys are going to extreme measures to defend some pretty average relievers. I happen to want to see the team play well all the way to the end and through the post season. If you think Rogers and fucking McGee are gonna be the anchors more power to you. I don’t think it’s going to happen
the best part of this is early on when the chick is like “come on ya dumbass, get up let’s go” and then she tanks right into the bushes
As I posted yesterday, Hader is pretty much the only guy who’s the kind of lockdown closer everyone dreams of. The rest of the pack are every bit as likely to blow the One Big Game, or any other save opportunity for that matter, as McGee is (I’m still not sure why McGee and Rogers are so much more physically fragile than other late inning relievers). The odds that there will be a One Big Game that determines your playoff fate and demands a top flight closer to hold on to a small lead are not that high. See above about the Dodgers playoff run last year.
Yes, this would be TF’s dream season. Random Latin players killing it like Estrada coming up out of nowhere and killing it. I loved Flores’ interview after the game. Miller asked him “Did you know you hit that one out in the 9th?”
“Yes”
Man, that was one for the ages.
Shit, someone posted that Rogers hadn’t been scored upon since May, and that’s a pretty solid stretch. McGee scares me more just for the fact that he’s got one pitch and it is a straight fastball. Yeah, we need pen help, but I don’t think we are gonna do anything crazy to get a closer.
We have when we have and that’s who we are riding with. Rogers has thrown 45 innings. There are relievers near 100 innings already. Rogers is way down the list of innings pitched by relievers. McGee? Well, he’s more easily replaceable. I could really care less about him, but if he’s getting it done, roll baby roll. Fucking Jackson looks like the find of the recent past. He and Leone, and the return of Moronta will help.
What they need to do is get rid of guys like Brebbia. He’s a trainwreck.
Shouldn’t we be worried about Gasman and the innings he’s chewing up? Or Wood? Or DeScaffolding? Gasman hasn’t pitched a full season since 2017, and that was 182 innings. Point being, they are built out of duct tape and bailing wire. But they have weathered a shit ton of injuries already. Short of selling the farm, they have to ride with what they’ve got.
Shit, I’m channelling James now. I didn’t see either of your posts . . .
No worries
Just never thought I’d see the day . . .
Another truly fine move by Z/Harris picking up Thario Estrada a competent hitter compared to Dubon and so far a slick fielder with exceptional speed.(Are short version of Altuve)He’s a key player as long as Craws out.Stay healthy Thario cause there’s no other SS they can use for now.Only Dubon which I would rather pass on..
Yeah, Estrada with the Giants so far has an on-base % over .400, and an OPS over .900.
He could bat lead-off vs. lefties, and move Slater way down.
Love that idea, Zum…
Worried about pen? Fine but i’m sure every other contender has same concerns–no one knows how well who they have will hold up coming off 2020. Kap said this months ago, he’s just trying to figure out how to get through 162 game sched. Certainly worked well so far and Z/H will likely churn through more guys to solidify what they have ala Wisler Sherfy Selman Doval yada yada
KImbrel has pitched 35 innings so far–equal to total of innings he worked 2019 and 2020 combined.
LA and SD have their share of concerns too.
Jansen is not same guy as before Dogs extended his contract years ago.
Melancon is 36 and has been in 41 games already. Pads pitching staff, like Dogs, have suffered many injuries.
I like Giants guys as is better than either of these two
The Dodgers could easily make Treinen their closer.
If the Giants intend to pick up Posey’s option year, and see if he’s got a few more seasons in him, given his resurgence, then perhaps Bart becomes the big trade chip. Z didn’t draft Bart, and we know Z doesn’t like Bart’s lack of drawing walks. Maybe, just maybe, Kimbrel can be gotten without the transaction being too painful.
Sort of hate giving up on Bart, though. It would be a pretty big gamble to trade him.
Rogers seems to thrive on steady work.
When he’s off too long, he loses that upside down arm slot…
Arm slot!
Somewhere Krukow is giving you a knowing dude head nod.
I’m with BF.
I don’t like either Rogers or McGoo as closer. They can pitch as set up guys.
Rogers pitches to contact, and IMO that’s no bueno for a closer. Dinks and dunks and hot 3 hoppers where they ain’t is a recipe for a blown save in a critical game or a WC one and done.
McGoo is a one trick pony with a smokable FB. One walk issued with a one run lead turns immediately into a decent risk of losing the game on a clubbed HR on a thigh-high no movement kill-zone 97 mph FB. Good hitters eat those cookies for lunch…
I don’t necessarily disagree, but closers come in to get 3 outs with no one on base. Like I said the other day, these guys only need a strikeout after they’ve gotten themselves in big trouble.
Are relievers that “pitch to contact” of any use at all?
Or are they somehow more likely to have bad games than high K rate pitchers with similar season stats (e.g., number of scoreless outings, WHIP etc.) exclusively at “critical times”?
Contact pitchers are definitely useful. But not IMO in “high leverage” late game closer situations with only one run cushion to play with. I’ll take a K artist over a contact guy every time for the bottom of the 9th close out. If you K a batter, there’s no chance of a fielding error, or a seeing eye hit, or a bloop, or a dinger…
Save stat being what it is and how viable , Melancon has 29 of them.
Kimbrel would make the bullpen pretty damn formidable. But if we get him, let’s hope this doesn’t happen:
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS201710090.shtml
Kimbrel has been dominant that’s for sure, but maybe a cheaper option could be his second in command LHP Andy Chafin who’s been lights out as his 8th inning guy with an ERA at 1.37 and a WHIP under 1.00.He’s only given up 1 HR for the season in 37 innings and a solid walk to strikeout ratio. Has 17 holds, paving the way for Kimberl in the 9th.Definitely a guy Z/H should talk to the Cubs about to help solidify the BP. Guy could close and probably will if they deal Kimbrel, but maybe they can entice the Cubs to pull the trigger on a deal..
If they deal Kimbrel, then Chafin’s price tag goes up.
Fuck Kimbrel. He will cost too much, and anyone that anyone deals is gonna cost dearly. Our bullpen failures of note were Brebbia, Wisler, ZZ Flops, and the like. As long as McGee keeps dodging bullets, let him roll. Rogers has been doing fine given the one exception. They can pick up any number of scrap guys that should be fine to bolster the 6-7 inning go-to’s. I don’t want us to sell the farm to chase the unreachable. Not by mortgaging the future.
The whole point of EVERYTHING we have been doing these last few years under Farhan is to get out from under huge deals. Now you want to take on $24 mill and Kimbrel for a misbegotten shot this year?
Agreed. Kimbrel, like many of others, far too volatile. Not convinced paying big $$ for “established” closer solves anything. Breaking up cohesion of what Giants have doesn’t sound like good idea either. Depth of quality setup guys Kap can match up with 7th or 8th inning always a plus.
The Grave Duggar awoke before dawn.
He put his boots on…
1. LaMonte Wade Jr (L) 1B
2. Buster Posey (R) C
3. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
4. Wilmer Flores (R) 3B
5. Alex Dickerson (L) LF
6. Donovan Solano (R) 2B
7. Steven Duggar (L) CF
8. Thairo Estrada (R) SS
9. Anthony DeSclafani (R) P
lol!!!!!! yer killing me.
Motherrrrrrrrrrr . . . . . .
the GMs manqué(s?) on one of the commercial blogs, around the fog horn, maybe, think Kimbrel can be had for a package of Dubon and Doval. I doubt that, but I’d do it. Those two Ds, along with Bart, seem like the best bait this year, and they’re all more or less as expendable as they are valuable. (I still think Bart will be the sort of hight-pick catcher Mike Ivie turned into, so long ago; could be wrong.)
The trade deadline is sort of like the draft, with budgets replacing selection slots. The needs are a good RP, a SP, and a dependable slugging OF — right? What will be available within the Giants price range? They have lots of money, so I think their concern will be how much prospect wealth to spend, and I don’t think they want to squander it.
There’s also a tension between the Giants’ short term and long term needs and plans. Right now the likelihood of spending a lot for a short-term surge is as high as it’s going to get; but they may be able to grab some deals from over-ambitious teams that will pay off big in the future. The next seven games may alter the calculus a bit. It’ll be an interesting week.
Just not his Boot Hill Boots I hope..
Man he’s needs to pick it up soon, bad enough they continue to carry Sock-less( they really have to admit to cut bait and move on from him like right now) now he’s only a designated ghost pinch runner, but can they really afford to keep 2 only for late defense and no bat? Got to hand it to Kapler last night, he knew he still had a reliable hitter in Posey and used him instead of an instant out going with Tauchless are GD even though their both LH Jansen would of overwhelmed them. But atleast they both found what homeplate looks like by the pinch run route, counts for something I guess?
he does need to pick it up but even during this slide his OPS is still .812. And god knows this blog jizzes about OPS. So Grave Duggar stays….
Until he drops another 75 points without a rebound, I’m not convinced this is anything other than a bad stretch.
great to see him. Wasn’t he in bad shape last year?
Tonight may be Wotus’ last visit to the Latrine in a Giants uni…
If you’re 5th OFer is basically a PRer and not much else, that is a waste of that roster spot. Tauchman has a glove, but an overcooked linguini bat. He’s just over-matched in most of his PAs…
Sock is a PR till further notice.
Teams don’t carry a Pinch Runner specialist anymore, that was a gimmicky Charles Finley thing with Herb Washington. As far as that goes, I don’t see Tauchless as a speed burner for even that gimmick..
Then they do have one single thing in common though.. “They can’t Hit”
San Dawg and son are on the scene!
He’s wearing the mid ’70’s Kingman jersey.
No Giants gear in sight…
Kingman?
Now, that is some old school action.
And, sign of a real Giants fan.
That period when Kingman was around (mostly ’72-’74) was the Dark Ages of SF Giants ball.
Props…
Giants averaged 77 Ws for the period 1972-’79, excluding the ’71 year when they won the division with 90…
Z/H looking at 3 Outfielders Starling Marte, Mitch Haniger&Joey Gallo
Put me down for Haniger who’s having a terrific year in Seattle , The RH power slugger has 23 HR’s 59 RBI,s .834 OPS and world not be a F/A till after the 2022 season.
But they also want and probably their top priority is a back end of the rotation for depth and have mentioned Zach Davies not overpowering but throws strikes a Z strong point to have..
Nice work by Wade, leadoff double, then steals 3rd, and comes in on a Yaz sac fly!
They managed a run without a long ball. How about that..
These early innings with our SP’s is just a grind right now
how in the hell did they only get 1?????
3 singles, two of which were no better than walks.
T-Bone got a nice DP ball to hold them to 1..
Scutaro redux?
First inning is the hardest for most big league pitchers.Just getting into their rhythms.Like they say Geren early before they establish their grooves.Hey they got to Buehler for one in the first so that’s cool.
Hey Duggar hit a breaking ball for a hit, good for him!
You guys notice how many wide throws the Dodger infielders toss to 1st base? They really are a shitty infield bunch..
Bad spot for Estrada to strikeout with 1st and 3rd one out and the pitcher up next..
After he fouled off the high slider, it was over. WB is excellent.
Bellinger looks every bit as lost as the Sock Man.
It’s unbelievable…
He’s not being overwhelmed by velocity. It can’t last.
Hope his struggles continues atleast thru the rest of the games we play them in
Have enough to worry about with Muncy,Turner, and Betts who pulled up lame in Colorado who they got to avoid..
Sometimes when he’s turned the right way Wilmet reminds me a little of Atlee Hammaker in the face with his cap on
I really like Kotter’s dugout demeanor…
Not getting enough pitches out of Buehler…
Time for a RALLY!!
Nice move by the Rays picking up DH Nelson Cruz.
The one weak spot the team was having this year..
he’s 41. It was a nice move, nothing more, nothing less.
that’s one of those 4 hits a week, or whatever that bullshit was, that got taken away by the shift.
3 ground ball outs that inning. Now 8 for Buehler tonight, on his game.
Flanney’s telling that Dodger fan I would of sent Yaz all the way home, but my Replacement Wotus has no balls, and in the end they don’t score! Since Wotus is the last remnant of
“The Last Supper of the old farts” he will be surely gone with young aggressive blood next year..
BTW that was the worst freaking throw I’ve seen in baseball this year! A certain MLB/ESPN comedy reel moment..
I already predicted several times that Wotus is done at end of this season. Flan is late to that party…
Red Sox beat the Yanks in the 10th on two wild pitches to score the ghost runner and tie it, then a walk, two more wild pitches and a sac fly to win it.
No groundouts needed that inning.
Well that’s one way for Brooks Kriske to make a name for himself…
Flustered Brooks.
My dad’s favorite comedian…
He always stole the show on those Dean Martin roasts.
Giants need another homer or two to win this one.
They can’t string together a bunch of base hits to save their ass…
I feel like the Giants will be a tired team coming back home tomorrow.
San Dog is baking in his Kingman double knit.
Or maybe I’m just tired from this week.
I expect a couple of roster moves going into the homestand.
Maybe a phantom injury and possibly a DFA of the Sock Man.
Heliot would be such a cool surprise…
Littell on thin ice here. walking the #8 hitter on 4 straight not a good look. Gonna be 100 in Sac for another 2 months…might want to avoid that.
did manage to get Taylor out. Might have avoided one of next roster moves.
Wonder how far away Moronta is from coming up. Supposed to start rehab assignment today. If he came back even 90% of his prior best, that would be huge. Adios Brebbia…
Well they got out of that mess somehow..
One swing away…
Oh thank you again Dave Robert’s!
Now time to kickass on there BP!!
Wade was in too much pain to swing…
Waiting for Jansen in the 9th. Hey, we got the split.
Robert’s should be skinned alive by Hannibal Lecter if he brings Jansen in!!
Wow unbelievable after Triein just moved down the Giants in the 8th.
Well that was a shitty AB by Yaz..
Good job by Mr. Ed…
Double Barrel action!
Barrels! A nice rope! for a double..
Tauchman on 2b again. Nice shot from Solano!
Kruk they will be running on contact 2 outs no shit!!
Thairo has to be patient. Jansen is all over the place.
Roberts is such a fool!!!
Come on Ponch!!
whoa looks safe.
He’s fucking Safe!!!
