What. Was. That.
I think it’s safe to say that in the 2,529 meetings between these 2 storied franchise there has never been a 4 game series that had games end like that. Anyone feel like doing the research on that or can we just go with that claim?
I’m not going to wonder wistfully what it would have been like to sweep them. Last night’s game probably should have ended on Ruf’s swing. But if I learned anything from this series it’s that baseball players are nothing like their overreactive panicky fans. And I also learned that literally no baseball game is truly actually over till the final out has been recorded. Time is irrelevant in baseball. And that’s one reason why it’s my favorite sport.
Such a shame to see this shithead so upset.
mm 3 straight games were winning team scored 3 in 9th.
And checked swing has not official wordage to describe it. Totally up to ump–so muncy can yada yada.
One of plays of game was Kap replacing Littell after he got Taylor out on pop up after Estrada error. Alvarez got Muncy out with RISP and then had shutdown inning.
Giants pen handled Muncy pretty well…think about that for a sec.
that’s true, 3 not 4.
but 4 incredible ballgames. Giants won more games than they lost in LA I do believe, fwiw.
Yep, Giants went 6-4 at the Latrine.
over last 3 games Muncy 2-10 with a walk.
Man, saw someone on twitter bring up Neuse not stretching like a 1b would to get throw where Vosler just beat him to 2b bag. Love Vosler, hope Giants find a way to keep him but once LaStella is healthy, probably doomed.
Baggs had tweet saying 1b coach Richardson reminded him to get good secondary lead off bag so he could get to 2b as quickly as possible. who knew 1b coach could make a difference in W/L.
https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/giants/article/Dodgers-All-Star-Max-Muncy-says-his-baby-girl-s-16334060.php
What a great surprise to wake up to!!! What a huge Giants moment. Flodger fans and tv talking heads will bitch on that check swing but I am sure Flapper land last night was all over that 2-0 pitch that was so clearly ball 3 and a 3-0 count is a whole different at-bat.
The Cleveland Guardians is a lame-ass replacement name for Indians…
The Cleveland team changing its nickname is great news. Native Americans don’t want to be sports mascots.
Cleveland Steamers woulda been great
Wade Jr. had been in big slump too, nice to see him come out of it. Got Giants going early with double and steal of 3b to score first run, and finished them off with line drive RISP hit.
Unbelievable. Not much more to say than that. And, as a fan, I make no apologies for the two calls that went in favor of the Giants in the 9th. None. They’ve been victim to such calls more times in my life than I could ever count. Fuck the Dodgers and fuck Kenley Jansen.
GO GIANTS!
MLB should ban those stupid foam tomahawks at Atlanta’s games. And stop with the “war chant” and hand “tomahawk chop.” All that is racist, and here’s the key: it was ALWAYS racist.
NFL is going to play hardball this season about vaccination. Teams could forfeit games if they have Covid-19 outbreaks on their rosters.
Good.
As a 55 year loyal Chiefs fan, I can’t stand the war chant or the stupid chop, but I don’t think a name or a logo change is needed. Nothing racist about an arrowhead…
The issue some Native Americans have with the KC Chiefs, like all those other Native American-themed mascots, is it emphasizes Native Americans as warring people, which feeds into that early stereotype of Native Americans as savages. That stereotype was used over the years to justify atrocities done to them.
Coincidentally I’m currently reading a new book about the Cleveland MLB team called “Our Team,” about how the team helped integrate MLB in the late 1940s. Very well-written and interesting book.
There’s irony in the Cleveland team being on the forefront in racial equality in pro sports.
They were early guardians.
Was the Dodger loss last night worse than any we’ve endured this season? Wilmer with a looping single. Down to last out, Solano doubles on a down and in 94 mph cutter. 2 out walk. Improbable 2-out infield hit on a routine ground ball. After getting to an agonizing 3-2 count that came as a gift from the ump, the umps then taketh away. Line drive hit to RF that might have been caught by a better RFer.
The answer: yes, I think it was. A glorious Schadenfreude-filled morning!
lulz
I forgot to add, all against the same guy who lost a 9th inning lead the night before.
The SF Warriors logo used to be an Indian dribbling a ball.
This is from their Philly years, did they also use this in S.F.?
Oh man, that’s brutal. I’ve never seen that one.
Don’t think that made the cross-country trip but I could be wrong.
Of course, Stanford changed its nickname from Warriors to Cardinal and within a generation the new name is fully accepted and the old nickname barely remembered. Changing a team nickname isn’t the end of the world. But, of course, lots of fans get emotional about it, at first.
Indians to Cardinal
Thanks. I forgot the original name.
as did my HS. we had same colors as Stanford, same fight song same helmet and b-ball guy I knew was mascot in indian costume
Never liked the name change to Cardinals. As a kid i remember Jim Plunkett leading The Stanford Indians to a Rose Bowl championship along with his crazy defensive line called “The thundering chickens” led by Dave Tipton I believe? I guess back then I didn’t think twice about names like the Indians,Redskins,Braves whoever thought they were just cool looking logos.. Times have changed though, and there’s just to many sensitive people in the world..
Yes, Kat, agree 100%.
For many years, the Cleveland team had a stadium that seated 78,000. Every once in a great while a game would sell-out and have the full 78,000, which is an incredible crowd-size for baseball. Most of the time, however, it had huge amounts of empty seats, as Duane Kuiper well knows.
Kuiper played his career in two cold wind-tunnel stadiums. In Cleveland and the Stick. The Cleveland stadium was near the South shore of Lake Erie.
go look at the different “Chief Wahoo” characterizations. 100% totally racist.
“baseball players are nothing like their overreactive panicky fans.”
Well, in defense of the fans, we are left to helplessly watch things happen in the games whereas the players can make things happen on the field. I’m saying things to my TV screen that can’t be heard by the players. At least fans at the game can have the illusion their crowd noise is influencing the game. At home I can only bounce around in my chair and get flustered. Being a sports fan is something unique. I have a friend who dislikes sports because of that. He says: why subject yourself to such arbitrary stress? Isn’t life already stressful enough? I don’t think I’ve ever answered that question well for him. In the long run, everyone picks their modes of entertainment. Some people hate baseball and think it’s boring; whereas baseball fans know how incredibly dramatic a game like last night is, where every single pitch in the late innings is loaded with excruciating drama. Baseball’s highs and lows are intense, and can’t be easily explained to a non-fan. During games we fans will panic, but it’s all part of being a fan. 🙂
Plus the players know they’re still getting rewarded (paid) no matter what. 🙂
I feel bad for college players who make a crucial mistake costing their team, but aren’t even getting paid. Florida St. kicker missing a last-second field goal, Georgetown basketball player throwing the ball to an opponent at the end, etc.
College players are opening the door to getting some financial rights, lately, though.
and in case of baseball, get chance to play next day. Easy to overdo emotions of individual games, up or down, in 6 month 162 game season.
Data is great for smoothing over those jagged, arbitrary bumps of the day to day. Winning is even better.
So what did you say out-loud when the ump called a strike on that bad 2-0 pitch to Ruf? 🙂
Oh, it’s definitely after the headache starts kinda relief.
I didn’t say “Gee, that’s too bad, but, gosh, I bet we’ll see things even out before you know it!”
Ha ha! There is NOTHING like an epic James umpire rant.
Vosler gets super props for his all out hustle with his secondary lead at 1st base helping him beat that throw to second.Didn’t hurt as all that there 2nd basemen (Nuise (sp) didn’t stretch out to take the throw are for sure he would of been out.The little things like that are what wins you game!
That and Roberts stubbornness to use Jansen after his meltdown the night before is inexcusable especially how Treien overpowered them on just 7 pitches in the 8th.I could careless about his phony W/S ring last year, this guy is a bad manager! I’m sure Dodger fans were deservingly roasting him on their blogs along with Jansen for there meltdown series they played..
Heisman Trophy Winner Jim Plunkett who played for the Stanford Indians was quoted by the Mercury News as saying:”None of us thought the name was demeaning “
There’s always the Fighting Irish. I mean, come on. Or the Nebraska Cornholers.
Regarding not thinking twice about those particular team nicknames in the past, I didn’t either. It’s a hard thing for us to accept that we participated in racism. It’s why there’s such push-back against the changes. It’s hard to accept being wrong about something. Our human nature, for some reason, wants to not accept it. Our pride chafes against it. But we have to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes to see it. The responsibility is on myself to do it.
I had no idea before this past year that there are military bases in the U.S. named after Confederate generals, such as Fort Bragg, and I’ve read quite a bit about the Civil War over the years.
Right now child corpses are being dug up outside buildings that Canadians were always taught were “schools for Native American children,” when they were, in fact, concentration camps of those children.
When I was a kid we were taught a folksy kind of humorous story about Washington having wooden false teeth. But now historians have proven that Washington actually had dentures with teeth pulled from the mouths of slaves.
Not a folksy story.
It’s not too much to ask to change some sports team nicknames.
I was not surprised at all for Roberts using Jansen. Shit, he saw Kapler go right back to Rogers and he got the save. That’s what closers are for.
I was a little surprised just based on the number of pitches he had thrown the night before…
the whole ego driven nonsense of closer role bugs me. Bottom line it is decision of Mgr. to decide who is gonna pitch and when-you get up to throw/come in the game when he tells you. If not, then you sit. As Loo said (and others like Kat previously) it was dumb to use Jansen again in first place, and it backfired again.
I’m not going to go back and look, but it seemed like the Dodgers scored in the first inning of every game in the series, and the Giants in three of the games. The games were grueling from the first inning onward.
That’s correct, Dodgers scored in the 1st inning in all four, Giants three of four.
Raoul Peck’s four-part documentary, “Exterminate All the Brutes,” running on HBO, pretty much explains why some people are so “sensitive.” The native I’m closest to these days points out that she’s no more American than she is Indian. I don’t think she’s asking too much.
For the good of the team they should immediately replace the Sock Man with Dubon.
How does that not make perfect sense?
I’m with you Loo, carrying now a pinch running ghost 👻 only is crazy!
Speaking of Crazy…
Cody Bellinger is now on a 0-22 AB streak, 3 for 46 and 5 for 66 in July so far!!
His mechanics are all screwed up and teams have exploited them..
Best suggestion I’ve seen for Cleveland instead of Guardians is Mistakebythelakers.
lulz
There are some odd nicknames at some universities, like the Sooners, literally named after people who cheated in a race.
Who knows what the heck this is supposed to be:

Before that series, I said I would have been just fine with the split. 3 of 4 is just beyond gravy. It’s been hard for me to believe this outfit is for real, given the pedigree of a lot of these guys, but results are results. And I’ve believed in the Zman since day 1. He and his management team have worked magic to get this team to where it is considering it was a stinking pile not too long ago when he was handed it. At this point, because a couple of other dudes will have to go, I’m wondering if the return of Belt and Longo could upset the chemistry of whatever this brew is …
I’m very doubtful Belt makes it back this season.
Ironically Belt being out solves the lead-off issue for the lefty lineup, with Wade in there.
The righty lineup lead-off is a hot mess. I say put Estrada there. Admittedly last night was his worst game as a Giant, but Beuhler is a big challenge.
I have been waiting for the axe to fall but after this series I don’t think I an gonna worry much. What a joy it was watching the Dodger fans go ballistic.
Yeah, the season so far has been a wonderful surprise. The Giants are relevant again! It’s nice to be really looking forward to each game this late in the season.
I share the same sentiment as all you guys about last night’s game. LA got hosed on that Ruf no swing call, but so what? The number of times the Giants have been hosed in LA down there in late innings either by lucky cheap ass hits, our errors or blown calls against SF makes last night just sweeter. Seeing the highlights of Roberts blowing a gasket was delightful theater. Hearing the LA fair weather fans boo their own closer who has done them more than well for a long time was both amusing and pathetic. When Timmeh was in decline, I don’t remember anyone booing, it was a feeling of sadness, not anger. Benitez yes, but he had not earned any player capital like Jansen…
Fans can tolerate mediocrity from innings 1-8. If Jesus blew consecutive 9th innings like Jansen did, even the evangelicals in the crowd would be calling for his second trip to Calvary.
We signed Bednar.
The minor league Stockton Ports’ mascot is named Splash. He’s pretty wacky looking.

He’s got great hair.
So does Wade Jr. Not sure 1b is his best position; maybe with time and work he grows into it.
If Belt does come back, Wade has to stay for an OF platoon spot when there’s a RHP, since he essentially hasn’t shown he can hit LHPs. Tauchman v. Wade? That can’t even be a choice, can it?…
The Modesto Nuts got their nut mascots.

Possibly nightmare-inducing.
this is a tweet from the Angry Tiger fan–boy this guy has come a long way, he works for barstool sports now. Anyway, I had to call bullshit on this tweet, thoughts?
Kap’s stock has soared this season. Pro sports are pretty basic. Win, and people will like ya more.
Kap had a rocky time in Philly because expectations were so high. But the players under-performed and Kap made mistakes. I’ll call it 50/50 blame.
Kap must be the odds on fav to win Manager of the Year.
IMO it’s a lock unless the wheels absolutely come off…
Kapler’s pitching was shits in philly; it’s lot better in SF. Both Philly teams cratered at some point second half (red flag to me at time); he’s admitted he is less doctrinaire and better listener than he was. Not sure if he inherited his coaches or is in situation more like now where he is in control but has large staff he delegates to. Good piece on dynamic btw he and Zaidi, in Athletic I think.
Belt may never play here again. Longo is likely out for the year a well.
Why do you say that?
There seems to be kind of a deafening silence from the Giants about those two.
And Kuiper.
Longoria’s injury is especially baffling.
It wasn’t like 2 outfielders colliding at full speed.
I get hit harder than that on the subway…
Kap got off to just a bad start with Phillies. We he called to the bullpen for a reliever when nobody was even warming up, the fans howled how stupid he looked..
Well, both years there, they cratered in the 2nd half. Wasn’t really paying attention but dic hid teams get hurt or did the pitching just fall apart?
Loo said last night that the Giants could be a tired team heading home. I agree, that must’ve been an exhausting four games for the Giants. Now the Pirates come to town. Talk about the perfect setup for a letdown. Pirates just got swept by the D-Backs, and when’s the last time Arizona beat any team three straight this season? Pirates also come in with the 2nd-worst road record in the NL. Prior to the AZ series, though, I saw a good bit of the Pirates giving the Mets nothing but trouble over seven games, with Pittsburgh winning four and overcoming a couple huge deficits while doing it. And the Giants split four with the Bucs two months ago, so this won’t be easy. Of course, much depends on Cueto in the opener tonight, hopefully he’ll be sharp and keep the Giants rolling. And maybe the Pirates spent their day off yesterday taking in all the pleasures that S.F. has to offer.
You, me, and Wilmet could all use a day off, Mac…
yeah good take was gonna post something similar. Trap set up vs. bottom feeder team that comes in on 4 game losing streak after DBax swept them. Posey with rare 0-5 last night. Might have to jack up offense to compensate for Cueto tonight.
If the Giants are going to try to trade Joey for Kimbrel (whose team option for next year iirc is for less than the Giants are paying Belt right now), then I’d love to see them do it this weekend.
Pirates seem to always play SF tough back there, I’m not remembering too well about out here.
Yeah, this series is a perfect set up for letdown play by Gyros. They know that, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. By all rights and on paper, they should sweep the Bucs. But, that’s hard to do, home or away, against any team. 2 outta 3 works, a sweep would be great, 1 of 3 would be failure. The 4th option can’t even be on the table…
Maybe some of the Pirates visited here yesterday. Well worth a visit:

Maybe they stopped in Millbrae . . . This place was actually really good.
Last I heard about Longo was when he got moved to the 60-day IL a week ago today. From Pav’s story:
To open a 40-man spot for Jackson, the Giants moved Evan Longoria to the 60-day IL, which means he won’t be back from a shoulder sprain until August 5, at the earliest. The Giants had initially hoped to get Longoria back in four to six weeks, but they acknowledged at the time of the injury that it was an unusual one for baseball and the rehab could be unpredictable. Longoria has been doing light baseball work in recent days.
So far I haven’t seen us overlook any team yet. The Pirates have always grinded with us and they are always tough games. Then we have the Dogs in for 3 and then the Astros for 3. We better not be too tired.
Someone said,”Put the horrible Ruf call on the scoreboard when the Dodgers come in next”
I agree 💯
Brisbee had column pushing Starling Marte from Marlins as answer for CF. there was blogger comment about lack of hitting vs. LHP, so I looked it up on B/R. Turns out he’s right–career .759 OPS. Btw his career BA at the O is .133, 8-60 with 0 (!) bombs. He’ll be 33 this October.
He’s their top hitter and best position player, so likely wouldn’t come cheap. Also, a rental as he’s FA 2022. I don’t see this as good idea, to give up players/prospects for someone who isn’t going to be around to help solve CF next year.
I’d be surprised to see them go with an expensive, simple rental, at any position.
I would rather go after Mariners Slugging Right Hander Mitch Haniger the local kid born in Mountain View, HS Archbishop Mitty, College ball at Cal Poly.He has a team friendly contact at 6 mil I believe, won’t be a F/A till after the 2022 season so he’s not a rental.23 Bombs,59 RBI’s .835 OPS he’s a legit player in an OF that needs it.
Geeez I’m wrong on Haniger’s contract it’s only 3 million, that’s chump change. They we’re trying to negotiate a new contract, but that got nixed, probably by him as they lowballed him on his last contract..
ah Ms. Britney Eurton doing interview trackside as Del Mar card nears first post.
1. LaMonte Wade Jr (L) 1B
2. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
3. Buster Posey (R) C
4. Alex Dickerson (L) LF
5. Donovan Solano (R) 2B
6. Jason Vosler (L) 3B
7. Thairo Estrada (R) SS
8. Steven Duggar (L) CF
9. Johnny Cueto (R) P
Another laughable trade I heard the Giants getting Kimbrel and the Cubs receiving Dubon,Doval& and some Korean guy Keng Somebody? Are they might switch him out and entice them with Sean Hejelle instead.Either way, that’s a no way the Cubs do that..
all specific trade speculation right now is laughable
Pirates dead last in NL for runs HRs and slugging pct., 14th for OPS.
they are starting 3 RHs this weekend…maybe Tauchman gets another shot for start.
Pitching 14th NL for ERA too.
In famous words of John Brim, Tough Times for Pirates fans.
You guys are convincing me nothing short of a Giants sweep is acceptable…
That trade for Kimbrel would be tempting. Doval has the talent, no question, but I’m not too sure about his head. What’s that line from “Bull Durham?” “He’s got a million-dollar arm with a 5-cent head.”
As for Dubon, he’s been maddening at the ML level, but he also flashes enough to be intriguing and I hear he’s been tearing it up in Sac Town. Is he a AAAA player? I don’t know, but watching him pull out that goddamn card every time he bones a play in the field annoys the shit out of me.
Kimbrel is the real deal and Rogers and McGee in setup roles is appealing. Nice lefty-righty one-two punch. I guess we’ll find out in a few days, but I’d be surprised if Kimbrel ends up in a G’s uni.
Gotta buck up tonight and not let down. Beat the Bucs!
I think that’d be a great trade — but I doubt it’s possible
I really don’t think they do more than dumpster diving. They are good way before schedule, but that doesn’t mean they should get right back into the problems they had 4 years ago and chase a couple high-priced pieces.
$44 mill for 1.5 seasons? Kimbrel is Crystal Todd. Or Melonhead Part Deux.
the team option for next year on Kimbrel is 16M and that’s his salary this season.
Mets’ maligned, fire balling closer Diaz gets a save with a quick 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Two ropes caught in the OF and a K.
It’s a friggin’ crapshoot, aye?
Fans not exactly packing the place for the team with the best record in MLB that just took 3 of 4 from the Dodgers.
Crazy wins. Loving this season more than any other in years and years. Combo of so many wins combined with contributions from so many unheralded players. Like 2010 only better. No way to see the future, but has any Giant team EVER ben this good compared to expectations?
1993 is closest I can think of, Dude.
They had added Bonds over the winter, but from what I remember the pundits weren’t too impressed.
Of course it was a very different time…
1978?
Thank god this wasn’t the first base ump last night.
Ha, my reference to “last night” below completely independent of this.
4 guys in a row swung at ball 4.
Fuck last night. They should have at least 4 walks against this fucking chump. Take ball 4 and win the damn game against this trash team.
The last 9 outs in this game have been K’s…
10…
Dopey challenge that hopefully didn’t take Cueto out of his rhythm…
Spoiler alert: it did.
It did…
I think they need to reevaluate the AI analysis of pickoff challenges, especially in early innings
The curse of late stage Sabe/Evans strikes again
That trade hurts.
And there’s trouble.
Ok there really getting stupid on there challenges lately especially early in the game..Dunston’s Dunce Cap not working..
Shit Ex Giants Reynolds and Zumie’s boy goes into the cove.Yeah that trade looks bad now..
Only in SanFrancisco do you get a row of Weiner Fans!!
So ladies who is your main wiener man?
Grave splash!
I don’t believe what I just saw!!!
Haha.
This works for the Cueto steal too.
Oblige looked ok on that Blast in the cove by GraveDuggar!
He’ll probably go on the IL now with that oblique…
Yeah thinking the same thing.Ramos on speed dial..
wtf don’t the Giants just darken that “batter’s eye” in CF?
That turned out to a Kuhl AB by GraveDuggar!!
Johnny Johnny flashing the speed with his 1st career SB!!
Kuhl on pace for 24 Ks.
And about 200 pitches…
Now 5 ball fours turned into Ks and counting.
Digging Ponch
