A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

We Like These Kids

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 30, 2023

I knew the Pirates were overrated but that was just too easy. Patty Bails sliding into fan favoritism. And Schmitt right behind him. FINALLY we have some young guys coming up. This team has trended away from boring and I couldn’t be more excited.

Just read where the Giants lead the league in bunt hits with 14. I don’t think we’ve had 14 bunt hits in the last 6 years. That’s impressive.

I love bunts. With the emphasis back somewhat to steals, bunting may be coming back…

I like em too. They change the way the game is played. I would love to see more of a Billy Ball back in the game.

Wade had nice one yesterday and Sabol has done it successfully too. Easier for LHs with 3b moved over.
I know shifts are outlawed but middle IFs are still pulled way over toward 2b. For LHs the SS is couple feet left of the base, meaning 3b has to cover lot of ground, leaving field open to bunt.

Amazing how a couple kids can change the outlook of the team. They went from boring to exciting overnight. Kinda like when Robby Thompson and Will Clark came up.

On a side note, DJ, all these years I assumed Otis Taylor was in the Hall of Fame.

    Unfuckingbelievable he isn’t in.

As long as the media holds most of the votes it will always be a little shady. I wish the living member of the HOF would be able to vote also. It still might not be a fair consensus but it would probably change the dynamic and represent the best of then and now.

Giants have a decision coming up with RH Reliever Luke Jackson who’s just about ready after TJ surgery last year.Need to open up a spot on the 40 man.He was solid 1.98 ERA for Braves in 2021 and has pitched well in Sac 5 out of 6 appearances no runs allowed.Stripass to 60 day IL works for me,guess we will see had they maneuver around this soon.

That was Z’s first draft with the Giants, correct?

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 30, 2023 at 9:29 am

Farhan was hired in 2018, but much of the old guard was still around in summer 2019 apparently. That draft hasn’t panned out much. But remember how surprised everyone (including JoeyB I bet) was when they selected Bailey so high?

totally disagree. Losing streaks are fine, they happen with every team. The difference now is that we’ve finally infused the team with some youth and they are getting to play every day. THIS IS WHAT WE’VE NEEDED!

Miami and Boston, 22-15 after one quarter, a lot of one-on-one, and guys flinging up bricks on 3-pointers. Yuck. Not good basketball.
Tough for Boston that Tatum sprained his ankle on the first possession of the game.

Warriors GM Myers declines contract, not coming back. Dunleavy Jr. to take over I guess. Lot for him to sort out, not least being owner Lacob’s lux tax penalties vs. roster construction.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 30, 2023 at 3:03 pm

Dunleavy, who has never done this job before, is probably fucked. Aren’t they facing like a 400 million dollar lux tax? Myers bailed cause he saw the writing on the wall…….

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 30, 2023 at 3:37 pm

Yes. First year of new and expensive Poole contract, last year of Klay deal ($40 mil) and Dray has an option for $27 mil he can either exercise or become FA. New CBA makes it tougher for Warriors to keep DeVincenzo, limiting what they can offer him. Not gonna be easy to keep everyone including Steph happy if he loses some of above, and at same time reload to try and get another one while Curry is still a force.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 30, 2023 at 2:17 pm

Boston: “We’re 0-10 in the 1st quarter shooting threes! Let’s keep doing it!!” Stupid. They had the game within reach down 6 early in the 4th quarter and continued hoisting treys. Dumb. Oh well. Woulda been cool to see them overcome the 0-3 deficit, but not to be. They would have matched the 2004 (?) Red Sox as the only pro team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the conference (or league) finals.

Curious as to why Myers is leaving. Is this like a Bochy break? Or is he done with GMing?

Seems odd since he pretty much had unwavering support from the top to the bottom of the organization. But I guess the newly enacted rules changes makes shit even harder, and he did mention the grind of the job for the past 10 years. Plus, the team he helped build is getting older. There are some tough decisions to make very soon. Dray and Klay being the biggies. Dray mentioned how close he was to Myers and that his decision would have an effect on what Dray does.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 30, 2023 at 2:38 pm

Writing on the wall the dynasty is over and things get much harder to manage in potential salary cap hell and win as the core 3 get older, less and less effective, and/or leave. Plus, Joe Lacob is reportedly not the easiest guy to work for. Take the 4 championships in a decade, a lot of money made, fan respect and thanks, and call it done. Plus, he reportedly wants to move back to LA…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 30, 2023 at 3:04 pm

Shit, shouldn’t Myers also get some shit for this hole they’re in right now? I get that he did a lot of good but he’s sticking Dunleavy with an absolute shitshow to fix. He has to take some blame for this.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 30, 2023 at 4:50 pm

Yeah, kinda like when Harbaugh left the Niners. He saw that Baalke had drafted 4 years of shit, York and Baalke were letting guys go like Gore, VD, and Crabtree, and the Michigan job came available.

Not THAT bad, but between the aging of the core, the new rules around signing guys, and the not-so-stellar drafts recently, the time is right for Myers to go out not quite on top, but pretty damn close.

I’m sure he’ll pull a Bochy and unretire himself in a couple years. Shit, he’s only 48.

  8. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 30, 2023 at 2:41 pm

GM Meyers probably stepped down cause he didn’t want to have to trade Klay are Green and not get stuck over paying either as well.I respect everything he did for the Warriors with their incredible run, now maybe he just enjoys some family time.

In speaking with reporters after the game, Giants manager Gabe Kapler, discussing Bailey and Schmitt’s continued success at the major-league level, was asked if the rookies’ performance so far this season has surprised him.

“It’s unusual. It’s unusual to see two rookies come up and have the type of success and sustained success that these two players are having,” Kapler explained. “I imagine, and this is a little bit of a speculative take, that they’re having a shared experience around it.”

With Bailey up, Bart must be wondering what he did to piss off the baseball gods. Or, what he didn’t do.
Farhan et al had prescience and good talent eyes to think Bart may not eventually be up to snuff, and they took Bailey. I know I was dubious at the time of having picked another catcher in the top round. Bailey looks like a natural catcher just doing his thing with the glove back there. Bart looks like he has to work too hard to get it done…

December 8, 1977: The Texas Rangers sent a player to be named later and Tom Grieve to the New York Mets. The Atlanta Braves sent Willie Montanez to the New York Mets. The Texas Rangers sent Tommy Boggs, Adrian Devine and Eddie Miller to the Atlanta Braves. The Texas Rangers sent Bert Blyleven to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pittsburgh Pirates sent Nelson Norman and Al Oliver to the Texas Rangers. The New York Mets sent Jon Matlack to the Texas Rangers. The New York Mets sent John Milner to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The NBA this year will bestow its first ever Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion awards for “pursuing social justice, and upholding the NBA’s values of equality, respect and inclusion.”

And, as announced last week, the inaugural award has been won by … Stephen Curry!

Curry’s areas of social interests don’t include his own backyard.
    It’s all a con.

In January, NBA superstar Stephen Curry and his wife Ayesha, an influencer, expressed their public dismay in an attempt to kill a plan to build a three-story townhouse community near their $30 million mansion in fabulous Atherton, Calif.

“Safety and privacy for us and our kids continues to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose to live in Atherton” complained the Currys.

One wonders if he’s also eligible for the Not in My Neighborhood medal. Or as Eastern European immigrant and movie mogul Sam Goldwyn is alleged to have said, “Include me out.”

Interesting moment in that Bee Gees documentary on CNN. Disco Demolition Night at that White Sox game was seen by a lot of African Americans and gay people as a kind of Nazi book-burning event. A Black guy who was an usher at that game says “I saw people bringing Stevie Wonder albums and other albums of Black artists who weren’t disco. The Demolition Night seemed like a backlash against Blacks and gays gaining inclusion in society,” because that’s who were a lot of the fans of disco. Coming at the end of the 1970s, and heading into the Reagan years, I hadn’t thought of it that way.
That Bee Gees documentary, “How Do You Mend A Broken Heart?,” is interesting, poignant, and entertaining.

After exploding jagged shards of vinyl records all over the outfield, there was never a chance that the second game of that White Sox double-header was going to get played. It didn’t help that thousands of people stormed the field for some reason. I guess to stomp on pieces of vinyl records, to help with the demolition. The Sox, of course, forfeited the second game.

Maybe I was naive about the disco thing at that time, but I saw that protest as a demonstration not so much against the music of the time but the *life style* of supposed shallow meaningless consumerism that marked the disco era. I have a cousin who won a disco dance contest on TV. What a tool he was. But a lot of the music itself was quite good; how can you not bob your head and move your feet to Thelma Houston’s Don’t Leave Me This Way…. even Blondie and Talking Heads incorporated disco beats into many of their late ’70s songs. If that demonstration was a racist thing, that went right past me….

What a great block of the plate by Bailey! Kid is so good at everything and now gunning a runner out at 1st crazy good!

  37. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 30, 2023 at 8:16 pm

Catchers can block the plate if they have the ball, or if the direction of the throw takes them into the basepath (which is ump’s interpretation.)
The runner can collide with the catcher in both of those two situations, I think.
If the catcher is illegally blocking the plate, the runner is expected to not collide, because the ump is supposed to call the runner automatically safe. The umps blow that call sometimes, though, which adds to the confusion.
The bottom line, though, is catchers and runners are getting far less injuries from collisions, and that’s a good thing. And less collisions at second base is a good thing.

That’s twice Haniger rolled over a grounder to the left side on an outside pitch.

He’s hit a few of those for line drive hits to left lately, too. The Haniger chart I posted the other day shows that he’s hit the ball to the right side a lot this year.

zzzz…4 hits all night and Sabol is 2-2. Teammates 2-21. More walks 7 than Ks 6.

I remember the left-handed nerdy-looking Earl Anthony. I’d root for him to win. I haven’t watched bowling in about 45 years, though. Back then, there weren’t a huge amount of sports options on TV.

There was that NBC Saturday baseball game of the week, that the Giants were almost never on.
The Giants had a few games on SF station KTVU, but at our house in the Central Valley, even after turning the roof attenna rotation button to the West, the station came in a little snowy for us. Trying to see the white baseball on a snowy TV screen was a challenge.

I had a ticket to that Neil Young concert, but my ride fell through, and I couldn’t go. Tough thing to accept at the time. Fortunately the concert produced a concert film and live album. And later in life I saw Neil in concert many times.

I used to love watching Johnny Petraglia, a lefty, bowl on those Saturday shows on ABC. The guy had a left handed hook that was incredible — seemed like the ball almost started out halfway in the left gutter, then right near the pins hung a complete right turn, right into the pocket. Boom ! Strike!
    Incredible…

Can’t win for trying, but the Giants went through all this stuff when they were the first team to do an AIDS benefit game in 1994. A pitcher didn’t want to participate (Mark someone) and was castigated by the media and dumped by the Giants. He sucked anyway iirc.

Maybe someone smarter than me can tell me the rationale for “opening” with Brebbia for 2/3rds of the 1st inning before bringing in Manaea. I’m not a fan of “openers” anyway, but yesterday’s pitching strategy made no sense to me. Is it psychological? Do they think Manaea will do better “in relief” than starting, even though he is a starter (and IMO a good one) and even if he enters the game in the 1st inning anyway? Asking for a friend…
