A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Disco Sunday

Not sure why he and Cobb flip flopped but that’s what happened. Loo put the call out for Mr. Ed to pick it up and he did so with 3 hits. Let’s see who he casts his gaze to today.

Giants now 3rd and 5th in NL in ERA and OPS. Does anyone think they’ll pitch or hit significantly worse than they have until now over the rest of the season? I’m not feeling that. Finishing in the top third of both those categories just about guarantees an 85+ win season.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 4, 2023 at 9:51 am

to me this is the definition of a .500 team. But I’d be willing to be open minded that if they can hang around .500 Farhan will make a deal or two that could put us over the hump and in the post season

      • James's avatar James said, on June 4, 2023 at 10:01 am

If they finish 500, their team ERA and OPS won’t be in the top third of the NL. Over 60 games they can have a 500 record based on the better than average collective performance because of random shit, but not over 162.

Be more worried about pitching, especially on road where Giants are 12-15 with minus run differential. Can big 3 hold up the rest of rotation (pen games included) and can reinforced pen continue to pitch like they did this past month, given workload as season wears on?

      • James's avatar James said, on June 4, 2023 at 10:17 am

The one thing I’m not worried about is the bullpen workload, which has been overhyped before. They were terrible when the arms were “fresh.” Webb and Cobb seem locked in. Disco has a very impressive walk ratio … dunno about how he’ll hold out, but so far he looks like the same guy we saw in 21.

Giants had great May, but June will soon be tougher. At Dogs for 3, 4 with SD, 3 with AZ, road trip to Toronto and NYC to face Mets 3 times each.

Wandy Peralta came in yesterday in relief for Yanks, faced 3 batters and retired none, charged with 2 runs.
Sent to Yanks by Giants for Mike Tauchman, who was starting CF yesterday for Cubs. Cubs come to town next weekend after Giants 3 game trip to Coors.

Yeah, and Stripling should be healthy by then.

It’s counterintuitive: Injuries to a few of this year’s free agent signings and calling up the prospects, would likely result in a better W-L record than a mid-season trade. It would certainly be more entertaining.

Yogi Bear I like that Starting LU and especially the starter 5 pitchers, not thinking Wisnhut is quite ready ( just got promoted to AA but his stuff is nasty like Harrison who’s closer for the callup)
      So are you trading Haniger?

      • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on June 4, 2023 at 1:35 pm

If all goes well, Whisenhunt will likely be fast tracked to Sacto in July. Harrison, having had a couple of good outings recently is closer. Thought he might get called up for the Rockies series.
They use an automatic balls and strike caller during week nights, which reportedly has a tiny strike zone.
Trade Haniger plus cash for his salary if they can. Put Manaea and Stripling on the 60 Day IL whether they’re injured or not. Hire Jeff Gilhooley as an assistant trainer if they refuse.

This team is still a .500 team by record and the eyeball test.
One day looks like a legit wild card team. Next day, over the cliff.
Orioles are a good squad, and Giants don’t measure up well to really good teams…

Crazy how the start of the year most of the analysis was SF’s strength was SP depth. Now we have Webb and Cobb and not much else. Stop me if this sounds familiar but we need another starter, but not at the expense of one of the kids. Should be easy right? Since it wont be, time for Harrison by mid June

  17. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 4, 2023 at 3:45 pm

Agree Mrsprtdude u can’t win with 2 starting pitchers!
Think the Giants would try to deal for Shane Bieber who looks like he’s on the trading block?
And stretch out Harrison more and get him up here by July 1st are earlier..

  18. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 4, 2023 at 3:48 pm

Harrison pitched Friday. 3.2 innings 4 hits 3 BBs 1 HBP and HR, only allowed 1 run. 76 pitches.
Matos btw Friday and Saturday 5-10. Bart btw 1-8 started both games behind plate.

Sad news – Roger “Humm Baby” Craig has passed away. RIP Roger . . .

  25. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 4, 2023 at 6:46 pm

    Damn.
The Humm Baby turned around a team with a comatose playing and work ethic by sheer force of will.
Together with Al Rosen doing his GM thing, those two took a moribund franchise and dragged it into success and self respect…

I loved everything he did back then, particularly calling pitches from the dugout and introducing the split finger fastball to the pitching staff. Literally, he changed the trajectory of the Giants from losers in the 70s and early 80s to winners afterwards.

Sorry to hear of Roger’s passing. He and Al Rosen oversaw a fun era of Giants’ baseball and his teams were winners, tough, scrappy and loaded with talent. They were oh so close to winning it all in 1987 and 1989.

    RIP.

  30. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 4, 2023 at 8:19 pm

Damn. He really was a breath of fresh air when the Giants were so sucky. Jimmy Davenport was stuck with a pile of garbage, and had little chance to succeed, but the new regime drafted well and Craig’s relentless optimism was just what the young team thrived on.

    Sad day.

  31. Winder's avatar Winder said, on June 4, 2023 at 8:20 pm

Sad news indeed. Craig definitely turned this franchise around and brought a whole new life to SF baseball. I just loved it when they brought in Big Daddy and Robinson. What a great team to watch.

In 1989, I had box seats by the Giants dugout at Shea Stadium. Since it was empty, I decided to help myself to Nelson Doubleday’s box in Row 1 which was empty during BP. His old buddy Roger Craig came out of the dugout to say hi I guess. Took one look at me, gave me a bewildered wave and went back inside…
