Busy Weekend
With smoke clearing out of NY we should be all systems go for the Belmont on Saturday. It’s a great card, too. And with the Giants back in SF we have a lot of action to keep track of this weekend. I’m always leery of first game back from Colorado especially in our yard. Stroman could have an easy time with us tonight. But the Cubs are pretty beatable and this team is flying HIGH right now on moxie, focus and intrigue, too. We are in for an exciting summer of baseball in the Bay, my friends.
Giants only 3.5 back of LA. Looked up last year, and giants swept 3 game series at home vs. LA June 12 in front of 41 thou. Slater and Yaz homered off Urias in the first and Rodon and friends shut them out 2-0. Brebbia Leone and McGee finished up.
Giants were 33-26, LA 37-23.
By June 18 Sf was 37-27, most games over .500 of the season. After that, lost 7 of 10 rest of month and began July losing 7 of 8.
Yeah, we got Cubbies and Cards before the trifecta of LA, SD, and AZ. Good we are healthying up, but the starting pitching has been pretty wobbly lately. The pen has been nails though.
Consistency is the key.
The Cubs were awful vs. the Angels. The Giants need to bank some more wins this weekend.
Slush said after DeSclafani tonight there could be 2 pen games to cover weekend.
Wood isn’t due back off IL til next Friday.
Bob Bolin a pretty solid Giant pitcher of the ’60’s passed away a couple of days before Humm Baby. Didn’t hear a word about it. He one-hit the heavy hitting Pirates on the next to last day of the 1966 season to keep the season alive.
Thanks, great card and solid under radar Giant pitcher during great 60s run. Great sabr bio in B/R page on him, if little dated. Mentions Bolin used to see former Giants teammate Billy O’Dell often, who passed in September 2018.
Both Bolin and O’Dell were good pitchers. And people our age and a little older are really dropping like flies.
We swept em, but the Rocks played us tough. Hopefully the Cubs will be a bit easier.
They need a different label for the bullpen games. “Bulk” doesn’t lend itself to a new coinage. Will Manaea and Junis be the weekend’s preponderate guys?
2 BP games with Brebbia pitching both to start since he only chucks an inning anyway.
Don’t care for them but I can’t argue with their record 7-2? Better then what the Giants starters are doing lately..
Someone (hitter maybe) described Bob Bolin as guy who threw BBs, just like his initials.
We’re going to the game tonight, with our 11 game losing streak on the line (I had inflated it by a couple games). A friend with “company seats” – they still exist apparently – offered them up. Here is the list of consecutive losses:
May 27 2021 Dodgers, 4-3
July 6 2021 Cardinals, 6-5
August 18 2021 Mets, 6-2
May 5 2022 Cardinals, 7-1
May 23 2022 Mets, 13-3
June 7 2022 Rockies, 5-3
Jul 11 2022 Arizona, 4-3
August 18 2022 Arizona, 5-0
April 2 2023 Yankees, 6-0
May 8 2023 Nationals, 5-1
May 31 2023 Pirates, 9-4
Fucking Joc Pederson ruined our shutout streak with a pointless 9th inning HR against the Nationals.
Probability of achieving that result must be minuscule.
Why is the great victory we saw with Mac at the stadium on 4/1 excluded?
Is this list only when you go with the Mrs.?
You got it.
can’t deal with seeing Manaea or Stripless anymore. Just bring the kids up they can’t be worse than those 2 chumps.
Maybe T Beck (Stanford guy) gets more extended run. Not trying to hex him, but since AZ lit him up on that road trip series there his last 4 outings look like this: 9.2 innings 1 run (HR) 2 hits 0 BBs 10 Ks.
Came over in trade w ATL 2019where they took Melancon and contract that had another year to run off Giants hands. That’s one helluva deal for Z to have pulled off, especially if oft injured Beck can be useful part of pen this season.
As Kruk would say, James is “due.” Enjoy!
Per another friend: “The Giants went 107-55 in 2021, 81-81 in 2022, and so far 32-30 this year, for an overall record of 220-166 during that stretch, losing 43% of their games. The probability of your seeing 11 straight losses during that period is .43 to the 11th power, or just over one-tenth of one per cent. Literally a thousand-to-one shot.”
Of course, he’s not weighting the seasons, but I’m good with the numbers given the fair amount of roster continuity.
Run differential of 25-70, ouch. Pythagorean record should still be better than 0-11.
25 million each for those 2 chumps for 2 years! Not Farhan’s finest moment for sure..
Sadly we’re stuck with them, atleast Stripole is on the PSL list (Permanent Suck List)
The Giants don’t really carry many starter types on the 40 man that they could use. Outside of Manaea, Junis started some games last year but hasn’t this year, so I don’t know how many innings he’d go. Beck started 4 games at Sacramento before being called up, but he lasted only 14 innings in those 4 games. They probably aren’t ready to call Hjelle back and the other starter type on the 40 man is Keaton Winn who last year moved from low A, to AA but seems to be struggling at Sac.
Agree Loco good point, they have no regular starters on the 40 worth a damm, including Keaton Winn who gives up as many hits as innings pitched.
Only Harrison when they lengthen him out more is the only option.
He’s still yet to go 5 innings yet and his Walks they want to see improve but hell he has like a 15/9K rating per 9.Think they want him here soon and can certainly use him in the rotation just more patience needed which I’m not high on!
U can only carry 13 pitchers max, and right now they’re all healthy like the position players go figure?Just want 2 players up here soon Harrison &Matos! Not a Tristan Beck fan,Ryan Walker is so much better than him, they better not screw with him ( cause he options he deserves his spot!)and now veteran Luke Jackson looks good after TJ and Giants like that vet presence in the clubhouse,so he’s not going anywhere.
Doesn’t 1-2 openers in rotation seem like wave of future? As expensive as quality SPs are and how hard it is to keep them healthy, isn’t it more cost effective to go with multiple guys like giants have Jackson Walker Rogers bros that could go couple innings each if needed?
Even Dogs have rotation issues, having spent $13 mil on Thor who is awful, and have Buehler Urias and May on various lengths of IL. they’ve brought up 3 rook SPs who’ve mostly sucked.
Rodon, de Grom list is endless. Why bother?
Looks like it Willied,
The original team using openers with major success is the Tampa Bay Rays who continue to shine with this philosophy. Read where since March 30th( and now more for sure openers) they have a record of 91-60 .603 winning percentage so it definitely works for them.
One of the lowest payrolls in baseball at 74 mil yet that organization has great leadership minds that get it done every year..
But they never win it all, Kat…
Neither did the 90s Braves until they did. When every org looks more or less like Tampa Bay, one of them will be guaranteed to win it every year!
Also aren’t paying anyone $20 mil per 6 months of baseball, or have anyone signed to some fiasco 10 yr deal.
Nothing again Aaron Judge, but in his first season (this one) of that deal, hasn’t he been on IL twice already, here in 2 months? You don’t have to be a bean counter to figure how this will play out.
The Braves still sucked. And underachieved.
I really wouldn’t be surprised for teams to go the 2-inning start route for 2 rotation spots. Mainly because of the money going to starters. By the time big time starters get their paydays, they’ve already amassed a ton of mileage on their arms. Then they start breaking down after hitting the jackpot.
Lets win for James!!
The Rays will be forever grateful to the Giants for taking the Longoria contract off of their hands.
they did send money back the Giants way in that deal. And took Span off their hands, for whom they also paid part of his salary when they dealt him off right away to Seattle.
per B/R Rays covered $13 million of the $80 million Giants paid Longoria over 5 years.
Just like Melonhead and the Braves.
Disco night? He needs one good start. It has to happen at some point.
Schwarber walks off Dogs 5-4 in 9th with bomb.
Dogs had tied it up after trailing 4-1 with back to back HRs from Betts and Freeman.
Meanwhile, Mets lose 7th in row, 14-7 to Pirates. Speaking of $$ not well spent!
Phils walk off Dodgers🤣🤣🤣
1. LaMonte Wade Jr. (L) 1B
2. Joc Pederson (L) DH
3. Thairo Estrada (R) 2B
4. Michael Conforto (L) RF
5. Mike Yastrzemski (L) CF
6. Blake Sabol (L) LF
7. Patrick Bailey (S) C
8. Casey Schmitt (R) 3B
9. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
P: Anthony DeSclafani (R)
Too soon to worry about Schmitt?
He’s in a 3-26 tailspin.
Does he have some obvious weakness?
No it’s not.
Out of zone swings I think.
Estrada is the real deal, he keeps bringing it. Couldn’t the Yanks use him now. Great grab by Zaidi.
Just think the Giants will need better starting pitching while they wait on Harrison to increase his pitch counts and innings..
With the development of Schmitt,Bailey,Sabol, my guy Ryan Walker etc, and another infield hot shot prospect at Sac SS Tyler Fritzerald who can play 2B,3rd also I’m in purposing this trade..
Bart,Ramos,Villar and that might not be enough for Marcus Stroman who’s very exciting to watch, one of the best pitchers going throws a ton of ground ball outs, loves the Giants, and Webb good friends.Thoughts??
And most importantly, he’s an ex-Met!
Oh boy.
Mr. & Mrs. James just won’t budge…
The few teams selling at deadline will be able to call the tune for desirable players I would think. Cubs could ask a lot for someone like Stroman. even if he is a rental.
Beck was solid.
Damn Cubs.
Bed time.
Geez Giants lose,Drone show canceled with over 35,000 fans now pissed off even more.Rough Friday night at the Dronacle..
