Yucky Series So Far

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 11, 2023

Just an underwhelming performance. Not much else to say. We are a .500 team, that much is clear. Just hoping Farhan does something at the break, and maybe we get some help from a young stud in the farm system, to sneak us into the post season….

Stop dicking around and bring up your stud future in Luis Matos to play CF’!! , another bomb last night (3are4? now)he’s hitting .375Tired of Z/K saying he’s exciting but theirs no spot right now.Well CREATE ONE Dammit!!
You can release often injured Slater to open a spot are just create another fake injury(Yaz always a candidate for one)but Matos needs to be up here manning CF and also don’t do something stupid and bat him 8-9 he needs to be in the heart of the order!!

Side note..Another Giant at Sac we all know SS/versatile player the Z way ..Will Wilson has Homered in 4 straight AB’s spanning a couple of games.

      What you said.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 11, 2023 at 11:15 am

I agree. Slater is a nice 4th or 5th outfielder on a platooning team, but the best ability of availability is not in his toolkit. This 2023 squad might squeak into a WC berth, but will be going nowhere in the post-season. Bring up these young players, and season them up for next year when a real run might be possible…

Yes another opener game but at least it only took 3 guys to get through yesterday, leaving Kap plenty of options today–Alexander Beck Walker Rogers twins Jackson. And Doval to close out W.

The Padres are poised to pass us. This team has to find some consistency.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 11, 2023 at 8:30 am

      .500 is consistency.

        No it isn’t. It’s mediocrity.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 11, 2023 at 11:17 am

.500 isn’t bad as long as it is a productive .500.
Meaning while you’re treading water, you’ve got viable MLB young talent learning the ropes and how to be productive big leaguers. That has to be what this season is about…

Nice vid from Xoot on Matos HR. Twitter fans want Z to dump Yaz Slater Haniger.
Yaz has .750 OPS, Haniger is owed $28 mil and Slater leads team in OPS (.919), OB (.419) and OPS+ (152). None of above getting DFA’d. Traded by deadline, maybe.
Unlike with Schmitt taking over for Villar, nowhere for him to play til someone gets hurt, yet.

Matos 2022 mostly sucked as he was hurt and unproductive at High A ball, hitting .211 at Eugene in 400 ABs before hitting .233 in Fall Ball AZ league in 93 more.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 11, 2023 at 8:54 am

Haniger ain’t going anywhere. One more injury for Slater and I can see him going. Yaz is Yaz. He should be the 4th OFer-late inning guy.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 11, 2023 at 9:35 am

I’m hoping some team shows enough interest to get Z to dump off Joc by deadline even if he has to kick back some $$. then Sabol or Yaz could be LH DH, or Conforto if he isn’t fully healthy.

A’s won 4th in row yesterday, winning second in row over Mil. they took 2 from Pirates here before that. That’s the 2 top teams in NL Central fwiw. Even at .500 Giants are game and half back of Brewers for WC.

  9. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 11, 2023 at 11:22 am

Haniger is a disappointment, but not that unexpected to me. The guy was often hurt in Seattle. So, unsurprisingly he started off hurt this season, and still is probably behind the 8 ball because of that. No power so far compared to his past, which is what he was expected to bring. I also believe that somebody from one league jumping to the other has a difficult time adjusting the first season because he doesn’t know the pitchers in his new league. Video study prep is one thing, actually facing the pitcher is another. Going forward, that won’t be so much a thing, given the advent of the balanced schedule…

Like the Giants, my pre-season predictions are abut 500:
    Giants-86-76
The A’s will be bad, but better than expected.
No team will win a 100 games.
    2 or 3 will lose a 100.
Teams with older free agents will struggle (Mets, Padres, Phillies, Rangers, Blue Jays, Yankees)
Teams with young homegrown players will flourish (Rays, D-Backs, Marlins, Orioles)
It will be hard for teams to escape the gravity of an 81 win season.
The final two weeks will be a frenzy, with only the Astros and Braves coasting to division titles.
Logan Webb will flourish with a pitch clock and contend for the CYA.
Stripling will be a good signing.
Estrada will be the team MVP.
Haniger, Flores, and Manaea will cockblock better AAA players.

My overarching prediction is that due to long Covid, older players are going to rapidly decline, especially pitchers. Before reverting to the mean, “prime years” will shift left two or three notches.
    25 is the new 28

The modern day record for games started in a season is 48 by Wilbur Wood in 1973.
Wonder if some “opener” is going to break it.
    Get the asterisk ready…

    1. Thairo Estrada (R) 2B
    2. Joc Pederson (L) DH
    3. J.D. Davis (R) 3B
    4. Michael Conforto (L) RF
    5. Wilmer Flores (R) 1B
    6. Mike Yastrzemski (L) CF
    7. Mitch Haniger (R) LF
    8. Blake Sabol (L) C
    9. Casey Schmitt (R) SS

    P: John Brebbia (R)

Luciano yesterday 3-3 scored 2 drove in 6 with 2 HRs, one a slam. 7 bombs after slow start. Think he is corner OF of the future though still playing SS for Richmond.
The River Cats btw have lost last 2 home games 11-6 and 9-8. Weather there supposed to heat up to 90s by next weekend. It’s a hitters league with 3 elevation yards (Reno Salt Lake Albuquerque) plus warm weather yards Sac Vegas (open air) OKC and El Paso and Round Rock, where it’s 96 right now.

I think that might be another error on Schmitt. He could’ve simply stepped on the bag with his right foot as he caught the ball but decided to get fancy with a long left step away and a dragged toe to the bag to help him wind up for the throw to 1B.

Btw, as for starters pitching in back to back games, Wilbur wood started both ends of DH for White Sox. And someone said Jack Sanford once did it for Giants, though games were 5 days apart.

  46. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 11, 2023 at 6:24 pm

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 11, 2023 at 6:32 pm

Kinda funny but Wood lost both games, going total of 4.1 innings. Didn’t retire batter in first one giving up 5 earned runs in 12-2 L, then Yanks beat him again 7-0 in second one as he gave up 5 more in 4.1 innings.
Did start 48 games that year, completing 21, in 359 innings.

  48. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 11, 2023 at 7:18 pm

Jack Sanford did start 2 games in a row at Wrigley for Giants Aug 2 and 3 1963.
In first game he got knocked out in first retiring no one and giving up 4 runs and 3 run HR to Billy Williams. Giants started him next day. He lasted 4.2 and again gave up 3 HR to Williams, who knocked him out of box as Cubs cut 6-1 Giants lead to 6-5.

There is a link to this at today’s MCC game day thread, but link itself in comments has 1963 game log but incorrect days of Aug 27/28.
