They Never Give Up
That was a great win. I am convinced this is a .500 team as currently constructed but it’s an .800 team when it comes to effort. They just keep coming at you.
Cobb Salad night.

I did something last night that I have not done in years…bet on the Giants! ML Parlay with the Nuggets…
I guess the no quit attitude reflects well on the manager…
Yeah, we saw that in ’21’ when we had all those late inning comebacks. Attitude is a big part of winning and it starts at the top. Now we just need the talent to pull it off. I still have mixed feelings about kap but then WTFDIK.
A’s beat Tampa last night for their 6th W in a row. 18-50, better pct than 1962 Mets 40-120.
Tonight is Reverse Boycott night at the yard, brought about by fans entirely with tailgate planned and free “Sell” tees available, and the drummers supposed to be there too. Chron story said just under 15,000 tickets sold.
Will local sports channel show them in the stands? What about mlbtv national network?
RE the A’s:
When I moved to the Bay Area in August, 1992, the situation was reversed. The Coliseum was a jewel from the inside looking out, while the view over the Cyclone fence from the bleachers, where I watched my first game at Candlestick, was underwhelming. There used to be a driving range near it that had more aesthetic appeal.
The A’s were a colorful playoff team performing for large crowds, the Giants were rumored to be moving to Tampa.
IMO, Oakland is not a major league city. The “there, there” is a vibrant artistic community, within an economically challenged municipality that needs to prioritize spending.
They should have won the lawsuit that would allow them to move to San Jose, though I doubt current ownership would have been satisfied with whatever concessions they could have gotten.
The one thing I really like about Luis Matos is his stance at the plate which has no moving parts no leg kick,no major stride,no mechanical jerking bat,he only moves his left foot heel a few inches when he’s ready to barrel up real quiet approach with tremendous bat speed! For a lot of leg kick players it’s all about timing alittle off and they will struggle (Haniger for one has too Big of a left leg kick that’s hard to sync up but it’s tough for a player to change that after doing it your whole Career) Matos is hotter then California wildfires, yet they don’t have a spot for him? It’s BS he should get plenty of AB’s from playing CF which would automatically make him their best outfielder,Right handed DH,PH more AB’s create the spot and get him up here now!!
This!
Matos has been raking since he was 17 (2019), with one exception, his poor 2022 season in Eugene, where not enough mention was made of his injuries that season . . . Only his mediocre batting results. He is healthy again and making a mockery of minor league pitching this season. Consequently, I think he should be promoted ASAP (as AK explained thoroughly above).
I don’t get SF bay area online newspaper access, but my take is that the local media there should be demanding that the front office act to get this kid on a bus to San Francisco. I am so tired of Slater (like 2 years ago) and I have never been convinced that Yaz is anything, but a “nice player.”
Slater is batting 400 and is a plus outfielder. They probably could get something of value for him.
The Haniger contract is more problematic.
I’m all for bringing up Matos. Slater is a nice, ok player if/when he plays. If Matos hit the ground running in SF and never looked back ala what Bailey apparently is doing, Slater’s trade would become a trivia question’s answer very quickly. Bart looks like a trade deadline candidate at this point. Bailey looks increasingly like the #1 catcher for the next decade, barring injury. Bart was not drafted by Farhan, so a Bart trade is no reflection on Farhan’s drafting, making it easier to pull the trigger. I feel for Bart, he’s a good kid with a lot of raw talent. He’s largely a “victim of coicumstanz”, I think, with Covid and intervening injuries derailing his development. We can’t forget that Farhan drafted Bailey in round #1 while Bart was still in development. That Bailey pick was questionable as redundant at the time, but obviously Farhan and Co. picked Bailey for a reason…
Matos after a lost year of injury and suckitude at A ball and in rookie league where he hit .238 in Fall, has had 2 good months, one at AA one at AAA.
D Villar had 100 good game season at AA with 20 HRs and .900 OPS in 2021.
Followed that 2022 with 84 even better games at AAA wit 27 HRs in 84 games and OPS over 1.000 before getting called up and hitting some HRs with SF.
But he hasn’t been able to hit ML pitching since.
So I get why Giants might want to see if Matos can continue to hit, and stay healthy.
As Yogi said, Slater can hit and is healthy right now. He had 3 hits yesterday, has OB better than Wade’s and OPS over .900. Off ML pitching. He’s a competent OF who runs well.
Yaz is hitting lot better than last year, bumping up slugging and OPS 50 points. Competent OF with 20-30 double and HR power and above average hitter overall with .750 OPS.
could be an interesting nba off-season…some big names could be moving like Lillard. He would be a big catch for either the Heat or Celtics to probably make each team more likely to get to a conference final. Same could be said for him going to the Sixers but Sixers fans dont want to put Maxey in a trade and if they resign Harden (no idea why they would want to) they would not have the money to probably trade for Lillard. Where Kyrie ends up will be interesting and Chris Paul and Ayton both could be very easily be elsewhere and of course does Draymond opt out???
After 40+ years in the east bay, divided pretty evenly between Berkeley, Piedmont and Oakland, I really don’t care whether the a’s leave now or remain after some miracle resembling SF 92.
Circa 1980, I was a Giants fan, but when the Giants were out of town it was easy to hop on BART and catch Rickey Henderson from a $2 seat in the LF bleachers. My kids never felt the same. They grew up Giants fans in the dugouts of Oakland LL and they developed a deep hatred for the A’s. But those diehard a’s fans my kids fought with had few followers coming after them as the Giants became the dominant team. (Early 2011, I was hitting fly balls to 13-14 year olds up at the big field at Caldecott park when a team of ten year olds ran onto the small field. Because it was their first practice, they had no LL team unis yet; and almost everyone of those little heads was wearing a Giants cap.)
After Wally Haas died, the new owners refused to lose money on the team. Then Fisher bought the team in, what, 2005?, and things got really bad. It’s odd, how clumsy he appears to be. He didn’t sound, much less cultivate, business or public sentiment in Fremont. He didn’t offer the Giants reasonable compensation for the Santa Clara County territory. (San Jose’s antitrust lawsuit against mlb never had a chance.) And his grandiose pipe dream of a new city within a city in Oakland vanished in the post-pandemic economy. Who knows what’ll happen in Vegas. But again at this point, who cares?
The fanatics packing the cheap seats at the E Coli tonight pretty much represent the sum total of the a’s remaining fanbase. I hate those fucking drums.
The Vegas/Nevada political landscape seems to be changing with respect to funding another pro sports stadium. With NFL and NHL already there, the appetite to give money away to a billionaire may already be sated…
Matos isn’t coming up till one of the starting outfielders gets injured.
They could send Schmitt down, if he doesn’t catch fire again in the next week or so. Even if he does, it’ll just be followed by another free fall unless he starts to lay off pitches out of the strike zone. No one is successful walking once every 115 PAs.
Matos is James..
AA Richmond 17 walks 8K’s
AAA Sacramento 7 walks 8 K’s
Combined he has a .414 OBP with a off the charts .1094 Slugging pct.
He consistently makes great contact and knows the hitting zone, so he lays off a lot of garbage pitches..
They could survive with 5 IFers for a short while. Wilmer can play 3 of the positions, Estrada 2, if necessary.
As if this day couldn’t get any stranger, politically speaking, Rep. Barbara Lee, a pol I’ve gladly voted for every two years (as I did for her predecssor Ron Dellums) has introduced a bill that would require a mlb team to reimburse a community it leaves by paying the equivalent of the prior 10 years in state and local tax it’s already paid. Under the bill, if any departing team refuses to fork over he dough, mlb loses its A/T exemption completely.
I don’t know. Sounds bizarrely far fetched (esp. considering the current House). Bernie’s threat to convene a Senate committee to look at the A/T exemption a year or so back got mlb to hugely bump Milb salaries and to approve the Milb union. But that was a nationwide labor issue that directly involved the A/T exemption. The a’s leaving Oakland? The only reason the A’s are still in Oakland is because of the mlb A/T exemption. Lee seems to be campaigning somewhat wildly to get appointed to the Senate should Feinstein finally croak.
The reason why Feinstein hasn’t retired is because Newsom, under a DNC directive, wouldn’t want to give Lee a leg up in 2024, OR alienate Black voters in Purple states
Given how her district was so badly screwed over by professional sports franchises, she’s acting responsibly.
Bernie is a huge baseball nerd BTW. The first time I met him, he was playing Stratomatic or some similar game with his son. As Mayor of Burlington, he brought in a AA team. The Burlington Reds won the title every year they played there, and the nucleus of those teams, went on to crush the once mighty A’s in the 1990 WS.
Because I had seen many of the players in person, I made what turned out to be THE greatest, most specific prediction in sports history. Going position by position ending with LF, I closed my case for an upset, “If Billy Hatcher has a better series than Rickey Henderson, the Reds are going to sweep.” He hit 750.
I think everyone in California understands the bind Newsom is in; I don’t think we all know enough about Feinstein’s bad health. If Barbara Lee wanted to be responsible, she would’ve jumped into action months ago, when the a’s announced that they were breaking off negs w/ Oakland to focus on lAs vegAs.
The great thing about Bernie is his consistency over the decades, even as he’s gone from Burlington (no disrespect) to making a creditable run for Pres. and creating a base for the young leftists nationally who have no choice but to participate as democrats if they want to be involved in electoral government.
1. LaMonte Wade Jr. (L) 1B
2. Thairo Estrada (R) 2B
3. Joc Pederson (L) DH
4. J.D. Davis (R) 3B
5. Michael Conforto (L) RF
6. Mitch Haniger (R) LF
7. Mike Yastrzemski (L) CF
8. Patrick Bailey (S) C
9. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
P: Alex Cobb (R)
Looks like another bullpen game.
Farhan acknowledged last week that Matos could force the issue. Yaz may be developing some lower back tightness.
Jeez btw Davis slide at 3b and Haniger getting beaned, Matos might be in STL tomorrow.
Haniger’s injury must assure it.
Crawford now 6 for 24 in June.
Casey Schmitt 4-29.
JD Davis hurt, now Haniger. We might be seeing Matos sooner than we think
Take the lead, lose two players.
Even the announcers are on the phone to Matos. Lol. Estes isn’t all that bright.
Pence might be best of the road announcers with Flemming.
I like Pence. I think he’ll have a job when Kruk n Kuip quit.
I’m all for that.Don’t need the injuries (Haniger’s look like a 10 day hopefully not a break) Davis? out of this game, smart move he definitely tweaked his ankle.. So Matos come on down! How quickly one game can change the roster look..
iirc the River Cats are in Sugar Land Texas tonite.
Company I used to work for had store there. Near Houston maybe?
Yes, Houston area.
Upscale suburb. I’ve known a few people from there
Yeah, Schitty & Bailey with RBI hits!
Ooops, Schmitty.
In the end that’s best revenge. flaherty don’t have much to say right now I bet as Wade’s teammates knock his stupid ass out the box
Pulling Joc, this better work.
Wilmer absolutely screwed out of ball 4 bases-loaded walk.
In John Feinstein’s excellent book about life in the minor leagues, called “Where Nobody Knows Your Name,” he writes about how, if the major league team is playing an early game, that game will be playing on a TV in the AAA team’s clubhouse as they’re getting ready for their own game. And the one thing that will cause the AAA players to gather around close to the TV is if there’s an injury to a player on the major league team.
There have been no complaints here recently, but, man, it is well past time for those fucks behind the plate to be replaced.
Jesus home plate umpire go take another shit between innings after screwing Mr.Ed out of a baseloaded walk. Not even close goddamit and I hope u have to butt slide with no toilet paper available!!
Just turned on A’s game, lot of green “Sell” shirts visible in crowd. Bunch of them right behind home plate. A’s fans (crowd looks decent) making some noise too.
Sell to whom? It’s a peculiar plea.
Saw a tweet. NV Senate passed the governor’s A’s funding bill this evening. On to the Assembly, where one young woman demanded assurance from the A’s that they’ll field winning teams. Idiot. Adjourned to tomorrow at 11.
Lacob has said he has standing offer to Fisher, and would rebuild at the coliseum site
No. That’s no longer standing. That’s some pre-pandemic myth. Only a saint would buy the a’s and rebuild at the E Coli site (Haas was a saint in 80 when he bought the team from Finley to keep it from leaving).
If there’s a savior coming it’ll appear after the A’s and LV/NV announce they have a real deal. That’s the time the Magowan led savior group arose in SF in 92. Yet again, mlb owners will be forced to choose. Imo. But I don’t see s savior.
Aren’t the A’s fans doing a reverse boycott tonight to bitch at management?
Yazzer bombs away to LF nice now Bailey back to back jacks!! 9-2 !!
Poor Daniel yeah Cardinals suck my man..
Just got caught up on the thread, coupled with a few texts from Flav . . . “Come on down Luis Matos!”
Yaz bomb!
Well, happy to see no signs of lower back tightness in Yaz or serious pinched neck nerve in Bailey. Yes!
Bombin’ ’em Bailey!
98 and that splitter? Looks a little better than Hjelle so far.
Winn with the hold?
It seems weird to me that he had never been in a major league park until he joined a big league roster. He’s probably been a great player since he was a kid.
There are some things about the Midwest that aren’t totally understandable to me.
They’re stuck in their field of dreams.
Yeah Warren Buffet ish buffoons.
Broken right forearm for Haniger been a real rough year between the oblique and Mexican diarrhea revenge( lost 10 lbs) now this?
Well we all wanted Matos who was pulled tonight along with Villar so both will be here tomorrow and in the LU I assume especially Matos I’m pumped up!!
yeah that’s what I thought what Estes said–if he goes 4 he gets credit for save, right?
Congrats to the Las Vegas Golden Knights and their long-suffering fans for winning the Cup.
lulz
D-back and Marlin fans can relate…
And Milwaukee Bucks fans.
What’s the word on JD?
I dozed off for a few innings…
Sprained ankle, severity unknown.
Right ankle sprain.
Maybe the Giants will mess with the kid and give the save to Randy Winn..
Winn with the save!
3 games over for the first time.
Looked up fractured forearm anywhere from 3 minimum to 6 months recovery time for Haniger ..
Well as John Franco once said: “Maybe it’s a blessing in the skies”
Giants gain on everyone, almost (Dogs Padres Phils won).
Marlins Pirates Brewers Mets AZ all lost. SF now owns #6 WC spot, game up on MIL.
A’s beat Rays again.
I know it’s not his fault, here.
But. Haniger’s history is that he’s very often hurt and unavailable.
Some guys just seem to have the injury bug, regardless of how it happens…
aaannnd, per mlbtr Belt to 10 day IL with “hamstring inflammation.”
Matos up and batting second.
Hope this kid is as good as advertised…
I wish I had a “connection” to watch his debut. I don’t expect much initially, but I haven’t been this excited for a player, since Will Clark. Nope, Buster didn’t do it for me (albeit, Timmy came close). I think it’s mostly due to him being a center fielder like Willie Mays . . . As you have indicated many, many times – why in the hell can’t we produce a decent outfielder? We did it regularly in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Yep, during those years we produced some amazing OF’s. I would take a Matthews, Maddox, or a kingman any day.
Or kept Foster . . . Still POed about that one.
Yeah blade, I hope this kid stops my seemingly permanent rant on the decades-long vacuum of OFer development. He’s one of the last SabEvans choices. I hope they give him a real shot, and not jerk him around with platooning. A legit, young 5-tool CFer would be a massive lodestar to team success and stability…
Yeah, I even forgot about him we had so many. I am still pissed about all those trades. Stoneham was a great evaluator of players for many years but in the end his decisions were not the best.
Familia de Matos Presente
An aunt and uncle brought a sign
Making Giants stronger up middle defensively a good thing.
Anybody notice a convo in dugout w Cobb/Kapler over him being removed after 4?
Yeah unfortunately the trainer was blocking the confrontation in front of them.I could only see Kap waving his arms, but I’m sure Cobb wanted that 5th inning to get a win, he’s a pitbull like Webb.Could of been the trainer saying he didn’t look right..
Lineup . . . https://twitter.com/SFGiants/status/1669020250464227330?s=20
Matos “rocket single” to LF as Cards announcer called it!
Good for Matos but how does he not get to 3rd on Estrada’s hit?
Well what a start, Love watching the kid Winn’s family last night with tears in eyes and now Luis’ friends/family some how made it to the game! That is impressive. One thing I was concerned with watching those AAA highlights of Matos was that he seems quite short, but let’s hope means he can continue this new Giants hitting attack of putting the ball in play everywhere…
“cardinals just aren’t playing well” said Flemms…um worst record in entire NL. a
Welcome to the Show Luis Matos!
Solid single right out the gate, though not sure about that base running when he froze up and should have been on third and Estrada at second .. But it’s cool 😎
No room for Roger Craig on the sleeve of mourning?
Yeah they should do that, maybe saving a sleeve spot for Jimmy Ray Hart..
If not, that’s complete BS…
Jim Davenport got one!
But no Hart ❤️ and 10 days since Humm Baby passed…
complete BS!!
Wow, nice start
fuck, I think I jinxed it.
I noted when the Cards were in SF that they simply suck. Shocking to see a Cards team this bad. I also noted to my kid that this Winn kid oddly had never been to a major league park before, but what if he grew up hating the Cardinals???
Could’ve been better.
Ooops, meant for Winder’s nice start. And ignore below.
I read something earlier that he was both a Cubs and Cardinals fan.
There was a time when that was unfathomable…
oh no a bandwagonner…
also then even stranger never been to a ML ballpark…
Dr
A mis-post here, haha.
Nostalgia time:
Belt goes on the IL with hamstring…
Nice 1st inning.
Even better start for Disco, a rare K-ing of the side.
Lot of offspeed from Montgomery in 2nd as he K’d side.
Man, Villar K’s again. Welcome back to big leagues.
Giants have SS/2b they are high on in Sac, Tyler Fitzgerald.
I know it’s early but Patrick Bailey should get more media exposure he’s already turning into one of the best catchers in baseball. His stats are right up there among most catchers.
Had to laugh and wonder in the Cubs game and the announcers didn’t even mentioned him, only Bart, and they thought they had a big hole at catching? What idiots..
And the real Disco shows up.
Crap,
Pfffttt! Just about to write that the Cards of ANY OTHER YEAR would have done some damage. Wrong again. Fucking Disco.
Damm it after a great 1st inning Disco gives up a Grandslam!!!WTF!!
A large ad for a Jesus website (hegetsus.com) behind the plate this inning on MLB Network.
I wonder if baseball has any guidelines on “religious” ads and where they would draw the line…
Any Scientologists in baseball?
Just like the Hendricks game, Giants getting completely shut down by a career stiff.
Hendricks has had a pretty good career, no?
Alright, better than I thought.
