A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Candlestick

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 17, 2023

Got this email yesterday. I’m guessing lots of you guys would like to contribute to this:

Hi,

I am the editor for a new book about Candlestick Park, which will be the latest in McFarland Publishing’s Historic Ballparks series.

We are soliciting personal memories of the park from fans (plus media, team employees, and former players, too) for possible inclusion in the book.  It looks like you have a pretty thriving community going at OneFlapDown77, and probably a lot of people who would have some good memories to share.

We have created a very simple website where we can collect these memories.  Is there a way I can share that with the people who post on your site

Here is the address for our site:

https://www.candlestickparkmemories.com/

Happy to answer any questions you might have.

Thank you very much,

James Forr

Wood and Webb to start rest of weekend. Guys not named Manaea (all 7of them) pitched pretty well last night and only worked inning each, so Kap should have arms ready to roll. Only Doval gave up a run and at least he worked out of jam.
I’m sure in one of his recent starts Brebbia worked 2 innings. will look it up on gamelogs.

At b-ball clinic last night so only caught up on radio as Giants were down 4-2 and began to rally. Loo is right, Miller is wonderful, especially on radio. would have loved to have caught him during the Dogs baserunning misadventure, though Flemms on TV was pretty bewildered too.

    • James's avatar James said, on June 17, 2023 at 9:00 am

Manaea got burned on a two out broken bat bloop and a good guess on the up and in fastball. He’s cut down on the walks and looked better of late. The Dodgers do have a great offense.

Did you see the Brisbee article on the Giants’ pen? Very good analysis and good reading for anyone who doubts just how sharp the management of this team is. Or who’s worried that the pen is being overtaxed.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 17, 2023 at 9:46 am

Ah thanks James. Manaea tends to sail along and then unravel.
re: Brisbee, I’ll check that one out. He’s a little too pollyanna for my tastes and I don’t find his humor engaging but he’s often right about stuff and less edgier than Baggs. fwiw I’ve put “meh” on 80% of what he’s written last few years, to no avail.

      • James's avatar James said, on June 17, 2023 at 10:00 am

This one even has a line that nearly made me laugh. Brisbee is a true analytics first guy, and his takes almost always align with my own. He occasionally panders to the “but baseball is a human endeavor!” mob, but you can tell he’s not being sincere on those occasions.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 17, 2023 at 10:39 am

Fair enough. My only worry right now is that SF fans (and Brisbee) are overheating their expectations for all the young players that have finally come to be part of everyday experience on ML roster. I guess most fanbases can’t wait for next prospects to arrive.

Will Casey Schmitt ultimately be more of a Chris Speier comp—slightly below average hitter who excels in the field and can still have long productive career?

      • James's avatar James said, on June 17, 2023 at 10:49 am

Like me, he hedges all of his claims. His over the top energy and enthusiasm may sometimes mask that.

      • James's avatar James said, on June 17, 2023 at 10:54 am

I’ll be unanalytical about Schmitt. Last night he made just about as terrible an error as you can make. Another player would have been crucified after the Giants lost. Instead, his fuck up was just part of the overall craziness of the play in a Giants win. He’s going to stick.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on June 17, 2023 at 9:04 am

I saw play from Dodger feed this morning, announcer initially said Schmitt made bad throw, eventually corrected himself, and summed it all up as “What a circus!”

Brebbia opened with 2 shutout innings last Saturday vs. Cubs, the near no-no Hendricks game.

Flemming had a brainfart moment like Mookie twice last night( definitely wearing the goat horns), he was ready to go to a commercial break after a Giant made an out but it was only the second out,and Estes said well not yet Dave they still have Estrada coming up.. He kinda shrugged it off , oh yeah in baseball you do get 3 outs but you could tell he was rattled by his blunder…

I had know idea Dave Flemming played baseball professionally?
He pitched for Seattle as a starter and went 17-10(92) 12-5 (93) overall career 38-32 so 2 good years before he lost it, not bad..

Eddie Munster Wood goes today but if he can’t go long just coming back, but who will eat up the long role in relief? Maybe 10 day for Flores who was getting an MRI on his foot/toe and bring back Winn?

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 17, 2023 at 9:54 am

That’s not David B Flemming. May partly explain why Jon Miller often comically stresses the B tho.

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 17, 2023 at 11:42 am

Yeah your right Xoot, The B stands for Brainfart for me.I only saw Dave Flemming but no picture, then I looked more and found the Dave Flemming dude and he was a lefty pitcher geez 🙄.Yeah it would of been hard to believe are baby face broadcaster could ever pitch in the Show..

That is pretty cool. What a come back last night!!! I had almost given up. My oldest went to bed saying we always struggle against rookie first time pitchers and that is what they did. The Flores and Schmitt big hits were awesome. I have been very impressed with Matos. As a 21 year old, his plate presence is unbelievable. Heliot could learn so much but maybe Matos is just a natural born big leaguer…

I heard a replay of Miller’s call of the play, online, and he summed up the whole play this way:
    “That was a disgrace!”
Flemming summed up the play well, too:
    “All hell broke loose.”

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 17, 2023 at 12:07 pm

Yeah found the twitter replay. Just enjoy Miller on radio more than anyone else.

@James I read the Brisbee bullpen column in Athletic, one of his best and thanks for tip. And line with Yabu in it was pretty funny. Noticeable uptick in positive comments overall on the site.

“Tomlinson missed a total of 12 calls behind the plate Friday, calling two balls on batters that actually were strikes and 10 strikes that in fact were balls. His 86-percent called strike accuracy during the game was two percent lower than the league average, and his calls on the night resulted in an overall favor of plus-2.44 runs for Los Angeles.
Per Umpire Scorecards, favor metrics represent the impact of an umpire on a team’s or game’s expected runs. Friday night’s 2.44 runs in favor of the Dodgers is the fourth-largest gap of the season in favor of a home team, behind umpire Edwin Moscoso’s 2.45 runs in favor of the San Diego Padres on Thursday, CB Bucknor’s 2.63 runs in the Texas Rangers’ favor April 1 and Lance Barksdale’s 3.17 runs in favor of the Kansas City Royals on May 26.”

  14. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 17, 2023 at 2:00 pm

When the Giants saw that the ump was giving Sheehan that high pitch for a strike, they kind of lost their plate discipline for a while.
It’ll be interesting to see how Sheehan does without such a favorable ump for his high fastball.

  15. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 17, 2023 at 2:06 pm

A takeaway from that article is that umps average less than 90% accuracy on ball and strike calls. That’s totally unacceptable.
I’m impressed with how well major leaguers know the strike zone. Just about every blown call gets a little body language reaction from the player.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 17, 2023 at 2:15 pm

The article disagrees with the 94% and 95% numbers posted earlier by Xoot. I don’t know why this other article has a different number.
But still, is 95% acceptable? I don’t think so, given the technology help available.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 17, 2023 at 2:44 pm

The text you posted relied in large part on the daily report I posted. Nits don’t matter when you’re talking about an obviously large margin of error that almost entirely favors one team. Now THAT is unacceptable. But the bots are coming.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 17, 2023 at 2:46 pm

“When I peaked up at [Busch], I saw a whole bunch of white. It happened really fast,” Betts said. “I just messed it up.”

“I saw the play wrong,” Betts said. “It was bad timing. We hadn’t been playing great — we’ve been playing alright, but things just haven’t fallen our way. It was just another one of those things that kicked us while we’re down. I gotta be smarter in that situation.”

In fact I may have met him at a party or two in a converted industrial space on 10th St., near Dwight, circa 89-90. An art history prof was the host. She was histrionic. It’s funny, the thing I remember most about the big party was the umbrage of a friend, another prof, whose little cactus in a pot house-warming gift didn’t as they say spark joy. I also remember thinking, man, I can do without this shit.

But on Martinez’s double, the lights flashed on and off during the play. Nobody scored, but it was a shocking sight and Kapler took the field to express his frustrations to the umpiring crew.
When Crawford cut off the throw in from the outfield, he couldn’t see the ball. Kapler called the situation “suboptimal.””

I missed it. Why did the bums in this game replace one of the best 1B with a guy who doesn’t know the position?

The only scene better than this (or at least as good), was when Sonny beat the shit out of Carlo with the garbage can lid. Love this movie. Willie’s favorite too I believe.

Isn’t it fine to feel so content after watching a baseball game. I need to step outside and take a look at the sunset now.

“A 15-run drubbing is the Dodgers’ worst shutout loss ever at Dodger Stadium, which is in its 62nd year of existence. Their only shutout loss more lopsided than this since moving to Los Angeles was an 18-0 loss to the Reds in Cincinnati on August 8, 1965.”
