10 toes. 10 wins. I’m just sayin’…..
Chris is gonna gave to start painting his fingers too if we want to keep this winning streak going.

A little more straight toed of a win?? Wouldn’t it be awful if we spend the rest of the season with toe puns and this Carrie’s us into the playoffs???
Like the Bums, the Padres need to go back to base running kindergarten. Machado did his best imitation of Betts last night. What did they have? Must of been 3 double play innings in a row, capped by Machado’s blunder.
4 shutout innings from Sean Hjelle, lol. He’s been in 10 games this season so far with Giants, and 7 of them were losses. Last outing May 1 Stros scored 5 times off him. Last time he’d gone more than an inning was vs. Mets where he allowed 3 runs in 3 innings. Pitched in both losses to Tigers during awful road trip with blown save.
Not the guy I wanted to see at the time but got much deserved W, lowering ERA to 7.79.
The win counts and I’ll take it, but IMO, that was a bogus call at the plate.
By rule it was the correct call.
The rule accomplishes its main goal: limiting horrific collisions at homeplate.
Actually I don’t think that call was correct based on where the runner was there was no danger of a collision
Like I said, in my opinion. It looked to me that the throw beat Sabol, that Sanchez positioned himself to receive the ball where the throw was going. I think the rule allows for both, no?
As I read the rule, Sabol permissibly could’ve tried to Pete Rose Sanchez into retirement if he wanted to. I think that’s what it says. There also is a wishy washy term about calling the runner out if the throw clearly beats him. The big NY ump crew must’ve spent its time on that speculation last night.

Here’s more on the fabled 2014 memorandum. It was illustrated, the better to convey meaning comic book style I guess. This piece includes some amusing shots at statutory construction from leading baseball minds.
https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-clarifies-home-plate-collision-rule/c-93914144
well, he was clearly beaten by the throw. I don’t see how NY makes the call it made.
This like a jury focus group. Now that we’ve focused the law, what are the facts? NY does have many angles and video stop time at hand.
The catcher can’t block the baseline if he doesn’t have the ball, unless the throw is taking him into the baseline (admittedly, it can be a gray area.) It looked to me like Sanchez had set up in a position blocking the baseline. The runner can’t be forced to take a circuitous route in that situation.
The catcher can move to block the baseline if he has the ball or the throw is taking him into the baseline. In those two situations, the runner is still allowed to collide with the catcher. I don’t think some of the players know that.
If a catcher is blocking the plate too early, the runner is not supposed to blow up the catcher, but instead rely on the ump to call him automatically safe.
Yeah, the runner is supposed to stop and say hey, look at him. I’m automatically safe! Sanchez clearly blocked all sliding access to the plate. The rule does not outlaw all collisions.
This is my understanding, too. Sanchez needed to be set up completely on the IF side of the baseline. Posey was always set to receive the throw at home in front of the plate. Bailey has demonstrated how you do it properly a couple of times this year.
Not germane to the interpretation of the rule, but I’ll mention that the throw was off line, nearly as wild as the one Sabol made from left several games ago. The RFer’s angle does provide more leeway.
OTOH, if the throw had been on a line to home plate, maybe it “clearly” beats Sabol and Sanchez’s positioning becomes irrelevant.
Yeah i bet one of the cartoons included with the memo covers the angle of the throw if.
“There also is a wishy washy term about calling the runner out if the throw clearly beats him.”
I hadn’t heard of that part of the rules. That creates a huge gray area. If I were MLB, I’d tighten up that part of the rules.
Read the article I linked. They did “tighten” it up.
In reading the article, one of the managers talked about if the guy is thrown out by 40 feet.
Well, how many feet is it when that clause kicks in?
Why not put a chalked hashmark on the baseline signifying the total catcher freedom mark? That’s not a bad idea, IMO.
The NBA put in that half-circle under the basket to make charging calls at the basket more clear.
Yeah! Like the trapezoid behind the goalie in the NHL…
“Yeah, the runner is supposed to stop and say hey, look at him. I’m automatically safe”
Well, the runner will usually make a futile wide dive first. And hopefully the manager immediately challenges the out call, which Kapler did.
But the runner can’t be forced to collide in that situation.
The rule does not outlaw collisions. It could’ve. I think we all hope runners take Sabol’s approach when the catcher blocks all sliding access to the plate–as Sanchez did. Calling Sabol safe last probably reinforces the safety purpose of the rule.
Sanchez has to get himself in position to catch the ball in the first place or it goes by him. I thought as locojuan said 7:50 that’s what he was doing to grab Tatis offline throw, which was in time to get Sabol easily.
Sometimes we just get a little lucky he definitely should have been out but the catcher was in the wrong place. I will take that any day. I think the days of blowing up the catcher are pretty much done unless the ball and runner gets to the plate at the same time or the catcher blatently
blocks the plate
I don’t miss the big collisions at homeplate or second base. The athletes, overall, are bigger and faster now than the days of Yogi Berra and Frankie Frisch. There was the occasional Frank Howard in those days, but it was pretty rare.
The total robotic managing part of the thing is that, if the out is overturned, the catcher’s manager has to come out and get thrown out of the game in an act of civil disobedience protest against the tyranny of MLB.
Yeah, managers arguing over a call is such a disturbing new trend.
It was always usually silly performative nonsense.
I dunno I always kinda liked Ear Weavers act.
Well, Kuiper’s take was what happened. He was laughing that Melvin would get thrown out if the call was overturned. It was and he did.
Yeah, the irony of the situation is the ump agreed with Melvin and the powers that be in NY overturned it. But Melvin isn’t arguing the nuance of the situation, he’s pissed the inning didn’t end and his team gave up 3 more runs. And it effectively lost the game for him on a very questionable call.
I don’t have a problem with Melvin getting tossed. I have a problem with the interpretation of the rule. It comes down to the fact that Sanchez moved his foot 8″ over the 3rd base line when he was receiving the ball. Was that an egregious blocking of the plate? No. He’s moving to where the throw took him.
I saw an interview with a guy who was originally going to be on that submersible voyage, but when he saw the submersible up close, with its video game controller, said he took a pass. He got his deposit back.
Couple in Florida are suing the company because they did not get their money refunded, after asking on numerous occassions (over $200k). These folks will probably be successful, as they are quite rich apparently, e.g., they also paid millions for one of the tourist space trips (not certain if it was the Amazon guy or Musk’s space company).
The L.A. Angels are so lame. Let’s not hear about Ohtani and Trout for a while.
Shut out twice by the Dodgers.
Tatis throw which was 99 mph I might add which is an insane laz rocket but still a tad up the 3B line and Sanchez legs were both between the baseline, but still what was he suppose to do,move his feet so both were in fair territory and make a sweep tag on Sabol? Don’t like the call on that one are 3B Coach Hallberg? ( who’s been good this year and maybe it got to his head)sending Sabol a catcher against one of the strongest arms in the game.
Not to thrilled with Bob Melvin anymore who I would f thought he would of come in and fixed the team morale though maybe this team will always be disgruntled and play for themselves cause they have NO CHEMISTRY at all and never will.
Last night after that play at the plate first got reversed he was still in the dugout yelling instead of pulling a full George Brett bull in a China shop sprint. He was actually tossed out while still in the dugout, pretty weak showing imo..
Buster lived by the sweep tag once his leg healed well enough for him to play again.
What a mess the Padres are. Machado can jog instead of running hard, whenever he wants to. Soto’s long walk back to the plate from second base was ridiculous. It wouldn’t be fun to be the Padres manager. Melvin probably grinds his teeth on a daily basis. They still might make the playoffs, but I bet Melvin had more fun managing the A’s.
Barry Bonds could grind on a manager and a team, but Barry always produced big numbers on the field.
Scott Cousins got into 135 games in 4 seasons, and ended with a career batting average of .179.
His lasting impact in the sport (no pun intended) was a big rule change.
Hey, he helped the Giants win a game last night.
Giants jumped from 18th to 9th in weekly ESPN baseball rankings released this morning. Good to see some national recognition for Bay Area upstarts. One constant through 10 game win streak and 25-9 record over past month+ is stellar relief pitching with Doval shutdown closer. Impressive performances this week by Winn, Beck, Hjelle & Walker. Even umpires providing assistance. Not sure of catcher interference call last night.
Total bullshit, as ESPN grudgingly gave them a 9 ranking, without recognizing just how big of a spanking they gave the Bums. In short, they lowered the Bums to 6th (2 spots down from 4th), when they should have been 9th and the Giants moved up ahead of them (either 6th, 7th, or 8th).
Just my take, but ESPN is always favoring East Coast teams and the Dodgers. This has everything to do with population/MLB television and streaming viewership. Main reason why the Giants are rarely on TV nationally. This was true during their championship years too.
They always have.
As an East Coaster, I agree with you. Giants typically under appreciated and largely ignored, particularly by NYC metro sports media, even during their stronger years. How many more Yankee-Red Sox Sunday night games will ESPN schedule?
As for ESPN rankings, Giants could be couple notches higher but at least they had precipitous climb this week. I thought last week’s 18th ranking total disrespect to Giants.
Dean, I responded below at the end of the thread.
Again, I’m glad we won and I’m not arguing against the rule, I just didn’t think the call was right.
This. I watched it couple times on mlb site and stopped it to see as best as you can where he was. Sanchez was up the line, left foot just outside or straddling it, right foot on the dirt to catch the ball as Tatis offline throw was coming in. Was he supposed to have been facing RF with both feet on the dirt and his back turned?
The Giants have moved up to the 4th seed playoff spot, past the Marlins.
Ah, the U.S. these days. This headline in the SF Chronicle today:
“Public shrugs off gunbattle near Pier 39”
The whole nation is the old Wild West now.

Sorry, not sure how I posted that twice.
I thought not once, but two, three times, about taking my 5 year old daughter to the local county fair last week due to the “fear” of having gang bangers or a whack job disrupting the festivities. A buddy of mine that lives in Sacramento convinced me, arguing that shit like this happens at the Sacramento fair, but the El Dorado one in Placerville was more mundane/conflict free. Anyway, that reasoning, along with my daughter looking forward to her first “carnival/fair,” along with an award she was receiving from the county school district, convinced me to go.
Not certain about you guys, but I am always assessing/gauging public places now. Grocery store, theater, library, etc.. This world has gone bonkers in my opinion, particularly since Trump’s Presidency.
I was reading Monday’s USA Today, and they had a big article on all the big shootings that had happened over the previous weekend. It was mindboggling. Some of the shootings were drive-by shootings of outdoor birthday parties and things like that. It’s insane behavior. Lots of the shooters get caught and go to prison. What was the point? Anger management issues?
Well, the problem can’t be the proliferation and availability of guns.
Fairs have always been fairly sketchy. I was leery about going to the Redwood City fair when my kids were little. We went once, and that was it. And that was 25 years ago.
Things certainly haven’t gotten more civil since then.
Well, Kuiper’s take on the play at the plate is what happened. He was laughing that Melvin would get thrown out if the call was overturned. It was and he did. Good on Kuip.
And yeah, the irony of the situation is the ump agreed with Melvin and the powers that be in NY overturned it. It comes down to the fact that Sanchez moved his foot 8″ over the 3rd base line when he was receiving the ball. Was that an egregious blocking of the plate? No. He’s moving to where the throw took him. There’s not much else Sanchez can do in that situation. I guess he would have to turn his back to the runner, put both feet on the right side of the 3rd base line, catch the ball, and blindly jump backwards with a sweep tag.
It’s overreacting to what was a fairly mundane play at the plate.
He stupidly blocked the plate.
Giants pitching even with all the openers lately has been just amazing. During the streak they’ve allowed only 28 runs in 10 games, and for the month (14-4) only 61. Contrast that with April when they were 11-15 and allowed 139 runs, 5 a game.
Btw 17-12 May and now, in 47 games that’s only 170 given up, 3.6 per game extra innings included. During the current winning streak, Webb is only SP with W.
There are gray areas to those rules. But MLB is willing to live with that to cut down the collisions.
The biggest factor is how much the players are getting paid these days. BF made this point after Buster got blown up. BF predicted there would be rule changes, and he was right. It didn’t happen immediately; it took a couple of seasons. The owners weren’t going to tolerate their 20-30 million dollar a year players getting blown up. Then Utley caused the rule changes at second base. I forgot whose leg he broke.
But, as Xoot notes above, there are times when the runner is still allowed to collide with the catcher. I’m just not sure all the players know that. I think we’ve all been amazed at times when the pros in sports don’t always know all the rules of their sport.
Take PI in football for instance. The refs don;t even know.
Takes a brave man to admit it, but Hjelle’s two seamer was effective last night and that curve that finished off one inning deserved his little celebration. Bet we see him more until he fucks up again.
Is Xoit your evil twin?
guess so
Yeah, we will see how he does going forward. A lot of other guys have straightened themselves out beyond him, so guess this is promising.
Who said PB and Hjelle?
Hah!
D-Backs ahead 2-1, the rookie Carroll scoring the two runs.
We get to see Carroll in the next series.
It’s so much fun to have the Giants back in the playoff conversation.
D-Back fans are having fun again, too.
Take a look at the overturned call that got Bochy and Semien ejected. Now that is perplexing. The catcher had one foot on the plate but he was not blocking it and his other foot and body were out of the way behind the plate. And the runner was able to touch the plate as he slid, unlike Sabol. Wonder if some confidential directive recently came down.
Yeah, that one was a head-scratcher, I think it was go-ahead/winning run in the 8th for the ChiSox.
Wow. Poole for Chris Paul. Color me shocked.
Does that mean Dray stays? Sounds like it to me.
The 7’4” guy from France is getting a lot of hype. He seems skinny. I wonder how he’ll hold up in the grind of the NBA.
Speaking of rules, Krukow always talks about the top of the strike zone as being the belt. That’s not correct. I think the rule says an imaginary line halfway between the belt and the arm pits. Again, another rule with a gray area, and leaves way too much to the whims of the ump.
The whole strike zone is an imaginary rectangle in the air that the ump has to conjure up. We need the electronic ball and strike calls.
They used to call the top of the strike zone “the letters” back when uniforms were uniform…
I have a lot of sympathy for James’ post last night about homeplate umps. It’s tough watching batters with good strike zone eyes getting screwed over by the umps.
Juan/clown is right, as I finally saw the replay a few minutes ago, and the baserunner was out (rule or no rule). My 2 cents is that’s fucking baseball and this is just another example, where ALL these stupid rules enacted after the late 60s (sans the pitch clock) should be canned.
The bad Wood today.
Stupid, stupid, stupid . . . If this trade goes down, we can look forward to this asshole.
Don’t worry. Dray will be there to back up Kerr.
Matos sure can cover a lot of ground.
Looks like a great day in SF, pissing rain here. Used to love midweek day games, felt like I was playing hooky even when I wasn’t.
Rotten Wood.
lol
Hmmm. We come back from this one, it’ll be epic.
Another rotten Wood deal.
It’s just as well the streak ends this way. Time to do some chores.
Junis swoonis.
Getting our asses kicked today.
Glad Sabol was clearly safe last night, needed that win.
If he had Manute Bol’s arms, he mighta made it!
Ha.
Toes up today.
400 players in rest of NBA, almost none of whom more annoying than Chris Paul.
Cue the Lloyd Bridges “Airplane” jokes for Warriors fans.
All good things must come to an end. Giants outscored 19-15 in series but won 3 of 4. I’ll take it.
I found it . . . It was 2 weeks ago:
“The middle-of-the-pack Giants have a middle-of-the-pack offense, one devoid of stars and long on interchangeability. That doesn’t mean Frisco can’t win, but it does mean that the real MVP of the organization might be whoever writes marketing copy that effectively makes this team look sexy. Harsh? Yeah, probably.
But right now, the Giants’ top three in runs created are LaMonte Wade Jr., Thairo Estrada and J.D. Davis. Certainly, this speaks to the organization’s ability to help externally acquired players become the best version of themselves. Wade has exemplified this. He entered the season having struck out more than twice as often as he’s walked in his career. This season, his walks and strikeouts are about even and he has become a plus-.400 OBP standout. Nevertheless, somehow, the franchise that has featured Mel Ott, Willie Mays, Barry Bonds and so many other generational star hitters needs to locate its next one. — Doolittle”
Late to the comments.. Call at the plate was lame. Lame lame. They have the ability to use their brains and chose not to.
Glad to rid of Poole, but if you listed the entire NBA the one guy I have at the bottom of the entire list to pick up is Chris Paul. Never been any star level player i dislike more than this guy. The only one lower might have been Harden. GRR
I put Lady Bird James pretty high on that list. Piss Crawl? Yup! Harden, and noobie Dillon Brooks? Yup yup!
Dean, I agree with you, particularly the “disrespect” you mentioned to the Giants in these rankings. I know these rankings are subjective, but I was shocked last week (although it could have been 2 weeks ago) when ESPN’s Doolittle called San Francisco “Frisco.” Only a rube or insensitive idiot calls San Francisco that name. This week Gonzalez did the write up, so it wasn’t him.
Those power rankings are worth the ether they are printed on.
As far as the play at the plate goes, Sabol never veered away from his line toward the plate. He wasn’t running down the baseline and had to swerve to avoid Sanchez. He had rounded 3rd and had swung wide. If Sabol had hit Sanchez, they would have called him out for hitting Sanchez.
The intent of the rule is fine. The interpretation of it was stupid.
The interpretation of the Posey Rule in SF last night was fine; the application of the exception–would the throw have had him anyway–may be debatable but no one who received only tv replays can say for certain. They probably erred on the side of safety, because that’s the purpose of the rule but they also had more evidence. Now the interpretation of the rule applied to the Rangers the day or so before–that was startling. mlb seems to be trying to send a message to everyone with that ruling.
Long live the 60’s!! Long may I live after my sixties!!!
Im in on that. I spent all morning getting x rays & a MRI, the better to design my sports & physical therapy plans. Maybe athletes get used to MRIs but man I hate that noise.
I had one done a couple years ago because I have pretty bad tinnitus in one ear, not the other, maybe a sign of a tumor. I imagined the machine noises as the outline of the dinner music at a loud trendy restaurant I’ve always been too old for, but which served food better than the 4.1 star rating it had on Yelp.
Maybe the brain gives up its image to more muted assaults. I had locomotives and artillery.
I don’t think CP plays a minute for the Dubs. He’ll get shipped off somewhere else.
Besides earl Weavers rants with the umps I always got some enjoyment out of Billy Martins also. To me that is just part of baseball just like reciprocating an HBP.
CP3 and GP2! It’s almost like having the Rogers twins on the same roster, or a little like adding Joc Pederson.
Yeah, accepting Joc as a Giant took a while for me.
Dang I would have liked for GS to have had chance to grab Jaquez.
Unc I hope you are right about CP targeted to go elsewhere, but idk. He saves them ton of $$ on one year deal…just gonna be tough to watch if they hold onto him.
Ha the Santa Clara guy, coached by Herb Sendek. Second year in a row Santa Clara gets guy chosen in first round. And Jalen Williams had really good season for OKC.
Is everyone in the NBA named Jalen?
