A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Tough Loss

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 26, 2023

Well, it’s impossible to complain about the state of the Giants right now. I will even refrain from criticizing my main man Sabol for one of the stupidest baserunning mistakes I’ve seen in a while. None of the excuses make any sense and I listened to his explanation as well as Kap’s. Even if you have your “head down” as you round 2nd, when your head comes up and you look to 3rd base coach for guidance you would also see your comrade Davis standing on 3rd base–your ultimate destination.

But Sabol has contributed mightily to wins this season so I am going to just let that go…..

A day off today before we visit our old *friend Brandon Belt in Toronto.

The Mets and the Padres, the two biggest spenders in the off season, are a combined 24.5 games out of first place. That’s amazing.

Yeah, looks like we dodged a bullet there. We truly seem to have a promising future ahead of us. We may not go far into the playoffs(and we may not even make it) but Giants baseball is once again fun.

A 3B coach with his arm’s failing stopping JD clue 1.No 3rd baseman you would think be suspicious. It really was a great play by Longoria diving to save a run but even then in his 6-7 seconds on the ground I’m sure he didn’t expect to get an out anywhere, but out of control Sabol thought it was a Sausage Race to the finish line. Rooks?can’t live with them can’t live without them..

Anyway Stripling has his Visa revoked at the Canadian Border?U all know he’s coming up in a Toronto Start from hell..

Strpimine to the rescue? I sure hope they fixed what ailed him.

Openers have worked fine for most part, but I read interesting suggestion in Athletic: why not just start the guys who would throw bulk innings such as Beck and Winn?

Adding starter in trade will be very difficult.
DeSclafani line from yesterday was 6 innings/2 earned, against good hitting AZ team. Sure he could easily have given up 3 HRs, but when he left game was 2-1 against, type of game Giants have been winning lately.

AZ is still in first, but if their team ERA continues to be 9th in NL I don’t see how that lasts. Giant scored 15 runs off them in first 2 games here when they didn’t have to face Gallen.

  6. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 26, 2023 at 10:16 am

per B/R: AZ pitching has given up 12th most runs in NL, 11th most hits, 10th most BBs, 9th most HRs. Giants lit up second best SP they have, M Kelly, in first game for 10 hits 5 earned (7 overall) 2 BBs and a HR in 5 innings and scored off their pen each game in series. They get Rays next, see what happens.

Yeah, I’ve wondered that myself. Manaea seems to have been pitching fairly well enough to give it a go. I don’t understand the benefit of having Walker (or Brebbia) throw one inning in front of Manaea (or Stripchat, or Highway to PB and Hjelle).
Is it simply to get the middle guy the win w/o going 5 innings? Seems weird. And I don’t pay attention enough to know if other teams do the same thing re: giving the middle guy 4-5 innings. Do they just go 2 innings per guy? Or stretch the middle guy (s) out?

I guess the argument would be you are using high leverage set up guys vs. top 3 in opposing lineup in Top first. So he’d be facing Freeman and Betts, Soto Tatis Machado et al and then next guy gets lower part of the order and only faces top bats once or twice. Third time through the order still generates worse numbers for SP far as I know.

This says it all and is the reason for an opener (see my link at the end of the thread regarding Tampa Bay that has been doing this for a few years) . . .

“Third time through the order still generates worse numbers for SP far as I know.”

Has signing a huge deal for one guy put any team over the top? Sure, it has made some teams competitive, but the Padres especially (and now the Mets) have won the offseason world series like 3 times in the past 10 years and has gotten them hardly anywhere.

Signing the occasional FA to fill a void not able to be met by the minors anytime soon is the only way to use FAs, in my view. Any long-term successful MLB team that’s regularly in the post-season hunt has a minor league system that consistently brings up replenishing MLB talent all over the diamond. That’s been largely absent, until this year, with the Giants since the 3 in 5 days…

Signing Reggie in ’77 put the Yanks over the top.
    That’s one I can think of anyway…

As a Willie Mays worshipper, I still think it’s completely disrespectful to Mr. October that the WS MVP is award is named after Mays and not Reggie. Yes, I’ve seen the catch a million times, and there is still no comparison between their WS performances. Every baseball fan of a certain age knows the reason why. Reggie was known back then as an “uppity N word” and maybe among certain people he still is. And don’t tell me let 92 y.o Mays enjoy it while he’s still here. He’s had every accolade there is.

Reggie ain’t exactly a youngster anymore either.
He’s just not their kind of guy – whoever they are…

Back in the 80s I used to feel sort of pleased knowing that he lived up the hill in Berkeley. Old timers in the east bay love him.

Unca, if you’re really interested in where all this “opener” business began or mostly began, look no further than the Tampa Bay Rays. Other teams are doing it, such as the Dodgers, so the Rays don’t deserve all the credit. Basically, it is the continued evolution of sabermetrics.

This link is a 3 part story that I first read a year and a half or so ago, so if you’re interesting in “getting in the weeds,” this explains it as well as anything I have read. By the by, I hate this type of baseball. More a traditionalist, but as we’ve all seen happen over the years, the way they play the game and these new rules which support this type of play, ARE HERE TO STAY.

If they are not going to play Schmitt very much, i.e.,keep him away from RHPs, then just send him down to Sac for more ABs against all pitchers. He needs to better develop his eye for the zone — Matos has him beat in that regard by a long shot. Schmitt needs ABs and more plate discipline, not splinters in his butt…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 26, 2023 at 12:47 pm

Agree. Last 7 days, he’s played 5 games, but only had 5 ABs, with 4 BBs (good), no hits, and 3 SOs. He needs to play – here or in Sac.

Huh. Lots of stuff there, Blade. Funny thing about the Dodgers and their pitching is how many times Roberts has fucked up in the playoffs with his pitching changes. This is a good idea for the long haul of the season I guess, but in the playoffs, this gets to be real dicey when any more can backfire. Esp when a pitcher is going good and pulled for no particular reason. As Roberts (and many others [Zimmerman, anyone?]) are wont to do.

I think at this point it’s safe to say there won’t be a humm baby sleeve patch.
    Another injustice…

Vida Blue as a Giant: 72-58/3.54 (Patch)
Bob Bolin as a Giant: 73-56/3.26 (No Patch)

Jim Davenport as a Giant: 77/456/.258 (Patch)
Jim Ray Hart as a Giant: 157/526/.282 (No Patch)

Giants have 3rd best NL record on road at 21-15, behind only Braves and DBax.
Jays have 4th best AL home record 21-14, behind Texas Tampa and Balt.
Giants will see Gausman. Cobb should be activated by Mets series, wilmet by tomorrow.

Aubrey Huff has been allowed back on Twitter, and has resumed posting hateful, rotten garbage.

He ran for school board in his local area last November, and lost badly. That’s good news.
