A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

SF Loses 6-1

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 29, 2023

Well, that one just didn’t work out. Can’t win em all. Thanks to the fellas who gave Stix some ideas on how he can access The Flap. I sent all of your ideas to him. Clearing out the cache seemed like the best one to me.

If Stripless is ever gonna pitch a good game how bout it be against his former team……

update: ******now they are reporting it’s gonna be Winn not Stripless.

One more thought on the access for Stix, I think you have to allow cookies for the Flap and if true, maybe his settings have allow cookies turned off.
Going with what Loo said yesterday, didn’t Stix have a nephew or somebody that got him squared away before? There has to be someone close by that could figure it out for him.

If there’s no one close by, couldn’t they just helicopter someone in to help out?

I read a thing that said attendance for MLB games is up about 8% compared to this time last year.
The cover story for the current issue of Atlantic magazine is about how baseball saved itself.

Not trying to downplay a perfect game, but….
I watched the last few innings of that game. German’s stuff didn’t seem super great to me. Some no-hitters and perfect games rely on a lot of at’em balls and pure chance and good fortune. It’s how the Hestons and Halickis of the world throw no-hitters.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 29, 2023 at 8:31 am

KTVU kept running a terrible story this morning saying the ump said he’d never seen stickier hands than German’s. That’s horse shit, the ump said that after the May 16th game where he was ejected. Fucking bullshit to downgrade that by lying about what the ump said

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 29, 2023 at 9:18 am

Even the Oakland beat writers were crushed last night, saying that the humiliation of the perfecto was just too much for this horrible year–the losses along with the loss of the team. A’s fans are in pain. Notably, few of them live in Oakland.

  4. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 29, 2023 at 8:44 am

AL does seem to have more strong teams than NL, but getting to play the A’s and Royals often has to dilute some of that. After their one week winning streak, Oakland 21-61 is back to being as bad as ever and Royals aren’t much better at 22-58.
The Rox did come back and knock off LA last night, and both they and the Nats have 32 Ws.

  5. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 29, 2023 at 8:49 am

Yeah Tim Lincecum laboring thru 148 pitches of his 2nd no-hitter against SD was painful to watch.
Probably helped shorten his career, but one thing i always admired by him was the pitbull inside of him, team 1st, (u want me to start are relieve Boch?im all in)great clubhouse and jokester, bringing a LU card to the plate,Gracho Marx glasses, big fat beer belly, I believe they had a seal on their uni’s for a throwback game.Only time he was seriously unapproachable was on his game day pitching starts when he was all business!!

  6. xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 29, 2023 at 9:29 am

Matt Cain pitched his perfecto against a rock bottom payroll, depleted team. (Rookie Altuve and JD Martinez notwithstanding.) MLB owners allowed the 2012 Astros to tank for financial reasons so the new owners could have cash to catch up after buying the team and in return for agreeing to move to the AL. Mlb is allowing the A’s to scrape bottom now for analogous reasons. Mlb really wants the A’s to revive and to start paying their own way. The Bay Area really isn’t a two team market. Soccer and cricket are more popular than baseball in SV.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2023 at 10:28 am

This area can support 2 teams. The A’s haven’t been serious about building a winnning team since 2006. Back when the lowly Giants were roaming Candlestick, the A’s were drawing fine. The Coliseum, minus Mt Davis, was a nice place to play. They weren’t regularly selling out but 25,000 was about their average from the Bash Bros days till the ownership change in 2005.

Once the Giants moved into the new digs, the A’s were still over 2 mill and the Giants over 3 mill.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 29, 2023 at 11:18 am

Yeah tell that to the raiders. 2006 Fishers ownership group took over the A’s. They immediately tarped the upper deck, slashed costs, and began trying to leave Oakland–first to Fremont, as close as their territory is to SV, a move they botched, then all the way into San Jose, botched even more badly. Demographics continued to skew away from white mlb fans. Post pandemic, mlb has decided that the Bay Area is not a profitable place for two teams. So argue with them.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2023 at 11:58 am

Demographics be damned. This is all about MLB supporting Fisher’s money grab from Vegas.

There’s already talk of giving Oakland an expansion team when MLB goes to 32 teams at some point in the near future. So, my point is, the area can support 2 teams. And the league would jizz themselves to get another team here, and whatever other city pops up on their list.

  8. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 29, 2023 at 11:17 am

The A’s of 2018-19 won 97 games back to back, and drew 1.6 million. Beane was rolling even though they got bounced out of playoffs twice in first game.
2019 Olson Chapman and Semien hit over 100 HRs btw them, all 3 30+.
Think about where Giants were then.

2020 Pandemic season in front of cutouts they won AL west at 36-24 and even won WC series over ChiSox before losing to Astros.
They had their share of talented players (top 5-6 for OPS and ERA), Fisher decided he didn’t want to pay any of them and he’d rather resume collecting revenue sharing $$ and stadium/development assistance hunting.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 29, 2023 at 11:24 am

Fisher got to resume collecting revenue share after he fired Lew Woolf, who’d precipitated San Jose’s antitrust lawsuit v mlb, and after he agreed to follow the lead of the owners. Before fisher bought the team, beane kept good young players through arb years. After, beane dumped them early, to avoid even arb $$$. Gray, even Cespedes really. Recent salary dumps, Chapman Olsen Murphy and the pitchers have been more drastic. .

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 29, 2023 at 11:31 am

Semien fits the fisher pattern too. One day he’s bumping into my son on the street in Oakland, reminiscing about HS, next day he’s in Texas. Although I guess they did keep him through his arb years.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 29, 2023 at 11:39 am

Noticed Chapman hasn’t cashed in like others, yet. Second year of 2/$25 mil deal with Toronto.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2023 at 11:48 am

They’ve had a few good season here and there, but Fisher and Woolf spent the entire time they’ve owned the team trashing their stadium and fans while trying to extort money from the city of Oakland. They’ve drafted and signed a ton of great players and held on to none of them.

You don’t build a fan base by tossing your best players before they hit the open market.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 29, 2023 at 1:10 pm

well, the a’s didn’t turn their attention to extorting Oakland until mlb owners directed them to do so, after the San Jose antitrust case completely died out, around 2016-17. That effort actually went pretty well under the old Oakland mayor, neoLibby Schaaf. Her admin was ready to pour many hundreds of millions into rebuilding infrastructurre for Fisher’s enormous waterfront development. Then the pandemic hit. No longer pencils out for Fisher. He made his decision to leave Oakland early last year.

    City Connect unis rated.
The guys rating these — no clue who they are. Your opinion is as good or better, but it’s interesting to see the explanations of the designs.
I don’t think the Giants uni is the worst. But, it’s not nearly the best.
The Pads’ uni reminds me of the colors of the old “Missile” popsicle. I’m torn between I really like it and somehow “fits” SD, vs. completely weird.
    I like the Angels’ uni a lot…

Spelled out in Gothic grey lettering that says Southside with and black with pinstripes is bad ass..

SD ..Colors that remind of Missile popsicle spot on Snarkk lmaoooo..
SF..Hated it from the beginning looks like an ice cream vendor only selling orange cream popsicles. And did they want to save some bucks and not complete their numbers on their backs? Just weird.. They have a good winning percentage wearing them so whatever works for them I’m onboard , just doesn’t do it for me.

Late to the A’s talk. Yanks’ YES Network had a trivia question Tuesday, since moving to Oakland in 1968, A’s are 1 of 5 teams to make the playoffs 20+ times. That’s pretty impressive, I think their total was 21.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 29, 2023 at 1:23 pm

True, but compare the number of PS games won by each team. During the Sabean/Beane era, eg.

      • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on June 29, 2023 at 1:38 pm

Yes, the Beane-era teams have been a bust in the playoffs. Is it only one ALCS appearance, ’06 vs. Tigers? Otherwise, all WC and ALDS exits.
Hey, A’s bouncing back today, up 3-2 on the Yanks.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 29, 2023 at 2:24 pm

on twitter, a’s fans seem most concerned with the various Nevada groups voicing opposition for giving the a’s any tax breaks for a new ballpark. those “SELL” fanatics are investing about 100X as much energy in Nevada’s politics than they did in Oakland’s. The fans rarely post about the games. It’s a sad, perverse obsession. As is, I think, praying night and day for one predatory billionaire to sell the team to another predatory billionaire.

  17. xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 29, 2023 at 1:51 pm

As a PS paying fan, I noticed one huge difference between A’s and Giants. A’s fan friend of mine bought OF tickets to an A’s PS game in 2013. $43 each. (Enjoyable game; A’s lost.) 2014 I bought Giants PS tickets from a LA based friend with season seats. The PS premium on her seats was in the hundreds of dollars. For the WS I paid a reasonable premium on top of that. I checked stub hub before game 5 and a few remaining seats in my section were priced at $2000. (Helluva lot more than my reasonable premium.)

I realized how much SF makes in the PS from season seat owners. (Owners earn some too, apparently.) Oakland hasn’t had comparable revenue since Wally Haas sold the team in the 90s

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2023 at 2:04 pm

The Google machine says the Giants clinched the division on the road in ‘89, and backed in actually when some other team lost. I do remember being at a late season win in ‘89, but it wasn’t the clinching game. Wrong memory on that.
And that Niner playoff loss was in ‘97. I remember very well being there, though. The sheer shock of the loss. The Packers were such an upstart team.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 29, 2023 at 3:46 pm

The ‘89 Giants game was a packed stadium. We were sitting in those upper deck seats in centerfield at the Stick, where you often couldn’t see the ball. You just watched the reaction of the fielders to see where the ball went.
The packed stadium likely meant a game vs. the Dodgers.

    D-Backs lost. That’s something.

there was nothing wrong with that steal attempt except maybe you could quibble because there was no outs. That stupid shitty throw tailed right into the runner and the SS made an incredible catch. They needed a runner in scoring position. I’ll live with bad luck like that.

Yeah even the catcher first had to backhand a pitch in the dirt, so it definitely threw his throw off line and the SS made a great pick as well on a one hop so it took 2 good plays to get him.Just a bad run for Sabol lately on the base paths.Just stay aggressive things seem to always equal out eventually..

Maybe try it next time with a little faster guy who hasn’t been catching all game.

Big shocker, the Rockies are playing like tomato cans vs. the Dodgers.

Matos 0-10 in Toronto, 11-49 for season.
5 BBs in first 13 PAs. 1 in last 42, and none in last 30 ABs since middle game of Padres series. OB at .291. Had nice series vs. DBax with couple 2 hit games.
