Frustrating Game
It’s too bad we had to play like that on a nationally televised game. I still don’t understand wtf Matos was doing on either one of those plays in the outfield. Quick trip home to play Seattle who we should beat but this is a lot of travel with no days off. Worried about the game tonight.
We got Doval through and no one else to the All Star game. That isn’t a surprise at all since most of our hitters, who might have some borderline all star numbers, don’t get any national attention at all. Playing like crap last night isn’t likely to change that.
I know you meant Doval but Octavio Dotel was a pretty good reliever too.
Pitched for 13 teams! Got in big trouble a few years ago but I think he was exonerated.
Giants might still sneak someone else onto the All Star roster once the dropouts
start piling up.
Unbelievable stat of the day that only Willedav might care about:
The Big E – the great Elvin Hayes whose name you never hear played exactly 50,000 minutes in his great 16 year career and never played less than 80 games in a season…
thanks. I’ll fix it.
Ha never liked him, and Kareem’s Bruins scorched his Houston Cougs in title game rematch by 30, but that’s amazing stat. Hayes was true HOF power forward as scorer and rebounder.
All Star game has become such a joke and Giants still banged up so as Baggs said in TA they can use the rest. I was thinking about great NL run when they regularly torched AL during Mays days, playing to win. Guys like Frank Robinson and Billy Williams had to sit and watch.
Bullets fan growing up, loved the Big E. 20-10 every year, and as you said, played every game. Fun fact: Hayes fouled out in Bullets’ Game 7 win over Sonics to win title in ’78.
Mercifully saw very little of last night’s slop-fest. Are they really just a .500 team that somehow won 10 straight? Fortunately rest of division had tough weekend too. And a modest request: Can the Giants get through a series, or even two games, without someone getting hurt?
That’s the difference between an 80 and a 90 win team: mostly 500 except for a winning streak or two.
Ha, I knew you would straighten me out.
Listening to the Mets radio broadcasters for game one, they marveled at the number of SF injuries. If the number of games the good but not great miss doesn’t start receding, they really will finish 500.
My uneducated perspective at season midpoint. It’s been surprising and fun 1st half but I’m still not sold on Giants as viable playoff team. Having only two reliable starters (Webb & Cobb salad) isn’t recipe for long-term success. Relief pitching has been outstanding past two months but can we count on overused bullpen to survive full season? Think Giants need additional arm to bolster starting rotation. But next four weeks key. If Giants remain in Top 6 in NL, then I look for Zaidi to be cautious buyer at trade deadline. But if team regresses in July, then I’d prefer to stand pay and let young talent (Bailey, Schmitt, Matos and pitching corps) develop.
ESPN did screw Giants too by making that the TV game during later time slot. so they had to fly back across country and play tonight here at home, while Mets aren’t scheduled to play in AZ until tomorrow.
this after getting into NY late anyway to start the series. DeSclafani said he was running on fumes, and Baggs in TA confirmed others felt same way.
They should get Yaz back tonight, that’s a plus given the way he was playing before the hammy pull — I think that’s what it was. Lotsa injuries seems like the Niners usual MO in a regular season. I’m hoping Thairo didn’t get a bone broken by the Mets idiot reliever…
Sly inside joke in passing from Baggs in the athletic: “The Giants pride themselves on their depth. They preach the importance of never having to settle for making suboptimal choices.”
Punch line comes much later in the article. Baggs can be tactful.
“But the Giants had circled No. 8 batter Brett Baty, who swings left-handed, as the point to switch to Wood. Stripling’s effectiveness — and perhaps an opportunity to build his stamina to better set himself up for a full-time return to the rotation — didn’t compel them to deviate from their plan.”
That’s pretty artful trolling. Guessing when to deviate from a plan that hasn’t yet failed is a pointless exercise, and Baggs knows this. Of course, he’d have little to write about if he didn’t indulge himself.
A compelled deviation is more recognition than guess
Take the two good innings and cash in your chips is recognition.
Depends on how good the two innings are. May be mechanical or chickenshit disregard rather than intelligent adjustment. I’m not a fan of the stripper so I wasn’t disappointed to see him leave. But Kap et al have infinitely more in game (and in pen) info.
And I agree two no hit innings are just two no hit innings.
He wasn’t going to go more than 3-4 innings, even without Wood. You can also take the other side of the oh the humanity of it all angle. Two successful innings after his last outing builds his confidence, and the fan base becomes intrigued by the possibility of a renewed Stripper, while Kap takes the heat for pulling him too soon.
It’s all total bullshit second guessing, but Baggs is an ace writer.
It’s not second guessing, it’s sly critique. Optimal turns suboptimal all the time.
lqtm
Let’s hope the ambien or lunesta or whatever helped the team get some rest on the flight home last night.
It’s a game of chance. Optimizing choices doesn’t mean they will turn out well. Some writers manage to have style without relying on the crutch of the you’ve got to mix the human with the analytics, eye test, intuition etc. “critiques.”
My favorite Farhan moments are when he responds with “That’s a fair question…” i.e. what total nonsense, but, hey, you have a job to do.
Even after yesterday, Giants have given up fewest BBs in NL. 4th for most Ks, 5th for fewest runs against, 3rd for team ERA.
just noticed: Brandon Belt hit 2 HRs yesterday
Another good not great Giant.
There’s a Wapo article on the current rarity of the 300 hitter and the respect he should regain after “analytics” robbed him of his dignity. What’s interesting is the suggestion that hitting 300 came to be regarded as a meaningless, isolated stat. It would be difficult to bat 300 and not have at least an average OPS.
I think under the old school rules, Buster’s .302 fairly reflects his level. May be total coincidence, of course.
Mays also .302 career average…
We all know Krukow won 20 games in ‘86. Just for the heck of it, I looked up the scores in the games to see how much we should respect the 20 wins. The ‘86 Giants had a good offense. But, really, only one win could be considered a cheapie, a 12-7 win.
The 20 wins:
8-3
4-1
10-3
7-2
12-7
10-2
7-3
6-2
4-2
1-0
3-1
5-1
10-1
4-3
1-0
11-2
4-1
8-2
3-0
11-2
Kuiper seems to love commenting on clips of Krukow from that season. Krukow had everything working and he was fierce.
It’s still my all time favorite year by an SF pitcher. He put everything he knew about pitching to good use.
Saw Krukow beat Fernando 1-0. Mighta been one of those. Hell of a game.
July 3 1926 born day of trumpeter Johnny Coles who passed in 1997. One of my fav lps of all time he recorded w Frank Wess on Uptown, “Two at the Top” in 1983 where he’s on flugelhorn.
Just listened again to beautiful “Orange was the Color of her Dress, then Blue Silk” from Mingus in Europe 1964 with Coles, Eric Dolphy Clifford Jordan Jaki Byard and Danny Richmond in Mingus band.
May have mentioned this before, but I saw him on Frank Morgan’s comeback tour. Billy Higgins on drums, too.
wow, awesome. Poor Frank Morgan…I really like cd I have of him w McCoy Tyner trio “Major Changes” from 1988. How deep is the Ocean, Theme from Love Story, 9 minute version of So what. I should listen to that again.
And of course he was unforgettable as the Wizard of Oz…
“Home is Africa,” from my favorite Horace Parlan LP, is one of those anyone would love this, but few will tunes I’ve played a million times. Love Coles’ solo on that.
thanks, great tune I’ll check rest of lp out. That’s a nice group with Booker Ervin and Grant Green.
Jason Schmidt had some great years here. I saw his 16 strikeout game against the Marlins. He was always tough as hell.
Whatever our biomass victory index is, it can’t be very good.
Gausman is the starting pitcher for the AL in the All Star game. That hurts a little.
Exhausted TBone disco on the IL as Baggs predicted. Thairo too with a broken bone in the hand. Terrible luck.
Now that’s suboptimal. Shit.
Does it seem like the Giants have a higher than average number of broken hands, wrists, and forearms when they get hit there, compared to other teams?
Pence, Belt (twice), and a bunch of other guys. Maybe it just seems that way.
Sick of other teams’ wild-ass pitchers plunking our dudes and breaking their bones. Total crap…
In 17 games DeScal has pitched 93 innings, or an average of a little < 5.5 frames per appearance. He’s averaged < 1.3 Ks per inning. Why is he exhausted already? Because he didn't pitch last season …
think it was this particular road trip, where Giants had some travel issues getting into both cities.
93 IP is a good first half. Only Webb went over 180 for the Giants last year. But he’s gassed.
1. LaMonte Wade Jr. (L) 1B
2. Joc Pederson (L) LF
3. J.D. Davis (R) 3B
4. Michael Conforto (L) DH
5. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
6. Luis Matos (R) CF
7. Blake Sabol (L) C
8. Brett Wisely (L) 2B
9. Casey Schmitt (R) SS
P: Logan Webb
Thairo news really sucks. Maybe a little rest will do him some good.
Need Schmitt to get it going again…
Crawford day to day too.
Up her in Seattle country, the Sportstalk radio has roasted the Mariners for weeks. Everything from listless to underachieving to blow up the roster to fire Servais as weak and not able to motivate. If Giants don’t take this series, that’s really no bueno…
Yaz plays a great RF at home, maybe the best yet.
At least Yaz is back. Nice play out there in RF. Hey, Conforto’s back as well.
Schmitt is on the clock.
Man I hate when I’m right sometimes.I thought Estrada broke his hand from that turd pusher Ottoshit face pitcher and I mentioned it in post last night.
Good to get Yaz back cause that outfield was getting thin especially when u end up using Sabol,Wade& Pederson out there. So what’s the deal with Conforto his day to day now at 5 days?
Ok my bad I just noticed Conforto’s back about time..
That fastball is not 98, and there’s no special movement on it that you can discern on the TV. How the fuck did they miss all those “mistakes?”
This team except for Conforto and Yaz are tired.
Strike outs are mostly boring, for either team.
One softball league I played in SF had 2 strikes, and you could foul out on the 2nd one. Man, did those games go fast. It was actually ridiculous, I dropped out of that league…
Slow pitch softball with no ump, 2 swings was the way we always did it.
And you got plenty of abuse if you waited all day for a perfect pitch…
Lawyer league I played in added a strike calling mat behind the plate to the two swings rule. No one ever got called out looking.
And this is how we lose. Fuck, maybe we do need Bart.
Could be tired.
hooooooooboy.
WOO-HOO!!!!!!
Damn. Did not see that coming. Sabol’s showing some muscle.
Boom nice shot from Sabol.
bats gotta get going. 3 games out of last 5 Giants scored only 1 run.
Woo-hoo, Blake bomb!
Someday Wisely might make us forget Joe Pettini…
Who?
lol
Sabol Island Bombs Away to center field..
His defense can be maddening but his bat is not, he has pretty impressive power!
I’m still trying to forget Scooter Gennett
That Ball Dude’s glove looks like something for a 5 year old kid.
He fielded that shot like a 5 year old kid.
It’s possible that Joe Pettini never hit a ball as hard as that last Wisely foul drive. Brett already has twice as many career bombs.
Bout time for a Wade bomb.
Oh boy.
All star game? Check
Completely unravel the next game? Check
Then again, so is everyone else.
The D is going back to being scary
Yeah, we are tired, hurt, and sucking.
both hitters beat Doval’s slider.
The first hit was 99 mph fastball, the last was, too. And the drive to right center was also off 99. The Giants can’t handle one 95 mph fastball after another in the strike zone, though.
cbs site said sliders at 90 and 89, on sac fly and the double down LF line.
Yes, I was talking about different ABs.
Fuck, it gets even worse.
The break can’t come fast enough.
Doval might get kicked off the All-Star team by the end of this one.
No Jume swoon. We die in July.
That was as ugly an inning I’ve seen in awhile.Looked like they were playing in quicksand.
Or since last night.
Again?
O M G !!!!!! Sabol 2 bomb night!
that’s effing dead CF.
Sabol with a Bob Brenly night.
Fireworks starting early.
Put Slater in now.
Sabol the only fireworks 💥 show for the Giants!
The rest of the the offense has been sparklers, smoke snakes..
Why aren’t they pinch running?
Fitting that it ends on a meatball right down the middle of the plate.
Has there ever been any effort to find this guy?
I read an entire book about that concert event. I don’t think he was identified by name in the book.
So if Sabol could block worth a shit the Giants would’ve won tonight.
Man, he blew those past Craw.
Bailey looked hot in the dugout about Seattle’s BUSH league dance celebration near the mound..
Yup. Couple others, too.
“smoke snakes..”
I never understood those.
