Openers
Solid win against a shitty opponent. I haven’t checked this, but it seems like our opener ususally just *opens a can of worms for the guy following him. Gimmicky bullshit is what it is.
This break couldn’t come soon enough for me.

On the plus side, the Giants start the day only a half game out of the final playoff spot. A win today is essential. They have to take care of business against a team like the Rockies.
I’ve lately gotten into those longform comic books known as graphic novels.
I recently finished an outstanding one about the life of Jack Johnson, a complex character, and the first Black heavyweight boxing champion. He accomplished that feat in the early 1900s at a time when boxing was the #1 spectator sport in the U.S., and had a racist policy of excluding Black boxers from having a chance at a championship. Johnson persevered and broke through that barrier.
The writing and artwork in the book are excellent. It’s a masterpiece of the graphic novel art-form, in my opinion, and I’m not even a boxing fan. The book is a great work of history. And it doesn’t gloss over some bad behavior from Johnson in his personal life.

The link is the book cover.
speaking of comics, quick google search turned up contemporaneous newpaper cartoon versions of Jack Johnson, including one with a huge pale fist labelled “federal court” knocking out a goofy, insulting caricature of Johnson. “At last there’s a real ‘White Hope’,” explained the caption.
My whole life is a longform comic book…
Like Harvey Pekar? He was a great Letterman guest; not Tom Waits great, but great.
JJ movie back in the 70s wasn’t great but the Miles Davis soundtrack was enjoyable. Some of the same players as In a Silent Way, iirc.
Who was it who said after the indictment that Barry Bonds was the post modern Jack Johnson?
That Miles LP is a favorite.
I wore out a copy of In a Silent Way the summer after I graduated from HS. Teenage excess, I guess.
Logan Webb last year went 192 innings, Rodon 178, far cry from 60s when I first got into baseball and starters were dominant. This season Webb is averaging over 6 innings per start, Cobb and DeSclafani slightly less. Wood is at 50 innings total. Looks like these will be mainstays of rotation and for most part it’s worked very well with all the fill ins, and dominant closer.
This is how baseball is evolving. Best starters go 5-6 and slew of hard throwing relievers come in behind them to face lineup 3rd time and finish game. Just so hard to keep pitchers healthy despite how workload has changed over time.
It’s those goddamn MRI machines inventing injuries that guys used to play through and never knew they had because they didn’t exist…
giants top 5 SPs last year pitched about half of total of 1433 all season. Cobb 149 Wood 130 Junis 112. 7 others pitched 40 innings or more, accounting for another 450 innings. Doval Rogers Brebbia and Jarlin Garcia had 275 of those.
All those guys seem just as important if not more so than back end of rotation SPs trying to get through 5.
Another pitcher on the rise and could be heading to Sac soon is #9 prospect RH Pitcher Mason Black who was named player of the month in June for AA Richmond Squirrels 🐿️.
In 5 starts covering 22.1 innings he gave up 3 earned runs in his 1st start in June, then nothing more for the month.29 K’s 5walks good ratio,8 hits allowed throws 97 FF with a quality slider(yes the Giants dont overextend these pitchers arms, which I’m ok with) it’s the way it is in today’s baseball begrudgingly.
Very weird quirk in the schedule today. I only know because I read the OC register. Dodgers and Angels finished their 1st half yesterday! The story talked of the 2 teams finishing the 1st half in opposites directions blah blah. I think that’s wrong. No way 2 teams have a Sunday off right?
I looked at the games schedule, and sure enough 28/30 teams play today, but the 2 LA teams are off. So bizarre.
Yeah, it was a 2-game series, I think they played one a few weeks ago at Anaheim, so 4 games overall. Pretty sure Giants-A’s will do same sometime in 2nd half of season.
Brebbia and Walker have pitched 16.2 innings and given up 5 runs. Of the 14 games started, they’ve given up runs in the first inning 4 times. Two of those times have been Walker’s last starts.
1. Austin Slater (R) LF
2. Wilmer Flores (R) 1B
3. Patrick Bailey (S) C
4. J.D. Davis (R) 3B
5. Michael Conforto (L) DH
6. Luis Matos (R) CF
7. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
8. Casey Schmitt (R) SS
9. Brett Wisely (L) 2B
P: Logan Webb (R)
Today’s prediction:
No bombs for Wisely…
That’s a Wise idea Loo..
And James I would prefer getting Tyler Fitzgerald up to play 2B/SS/OF and dump Wisely to open up a spot on the 40 man first..
I’m very glad Yaz can play RF full time now.
What’s the deal with Matos misjudging plays–in the field or on base–in front of him?
Is anyone going to express their joy at the prospect of Wisely playing second every day?
Good infield D so far.
Schmitt can definitely take SS reins from Craw next season, I assume that’s the plan. Great glove, great arm. Let the batting eye develop. Luciano has been hyped so much, I’ll believe he’s MLB caliber when I see him there…
Just like Friday night, being shut down by a POS lefty.
JD bomb!
Matos disappoints in an odd way again. How the hell did he get thrown out?!?
JD Davis says not so fast James I’ll bomb a Homer for ya off this PÓS…
I already moved on to my next bit of misplaced negativity!
Giants going to need at least another HR in this one. Looks like a conga line hitting spree ain’t gonna happen with this LU…
Mr. Ed 10 for last 19 raising BA 30 points…
Schmitt flashing the D again.
When this kid figures out how to be selective at the plate, he’ll be a top shelf player…
Jack Johnson was sent to prison for a year on a completely bogus charge by angry racists in the justice system, because he’d won the championship, and had married a White woman.
Many years later he was posthumously pardoned of the charge after much lobbying by Sylvester Stallone.
Donald Trump pardoned Johnson. BFD. PR stunt. Stallone had very little to do with the recognition and respect Johnson belatedly received. Maybe he inspired a new comic book. Miles Davis in 71 had an impact though.
I mentioned the pardon because the charge was so bogus.
I mention trump for obvious reasons.
Webb settling into the unenviable role of Cain successor in getting low run support seemingly more often than not…
That’s it, nice walk taken by Schmitt…
Not going to need an MRI to discover that one. From POS to poor SOB.
Just saw a commercial reminding me that Scott Rolen is about to be inducted into the HOF…
Probably repetitive, but I don’t see any meaningful difference in Rolen’s stats and Will Clark’s. Rolen has a better WAR, but I don’t give a S about that stat. Clark has a better BA and OPS with about the same number of career ABs. Defensively, hard to compare 1st and 3rd. I’ll give that a push. Rolen in and Clark out doesn’t make sense to me at all…
The difference in WAR. Same with Jeff Kent. HOSabrStatFame
https://tinyurl.com/5ev357fy
Rolen made a lot more money, too.
Will crushes Rolen in post season stats…
True. But the WAR! I really do think most bwhaha writers are that lazy and corrupt.
If you compare Clark’s stats to other modern era HOF 1B men, his numbers aren’t quite there. Rolen’s are a little more in line with the other 3B men. If the defensive position doesn’t count, there’d be a much smaller list of SSs.
That sounds suspiciously like WAR. (“WAR value also depends on what position a player plays, with more value going to key defensive positions like catcher and shortstop than positions with less defensive importance such as first base.” Wiki)
It has nothing to do with WAR. Brooks Robinson isn’t in the HOF because of his WAR (or his hitting) and neither is Ozzie Smith. Whatever their other failings, voters have placed some value on the position you played before WAR tried to quantify it through defensive metrics. First base is the least impactful defensive position, so the hitting has counted for more. Totally old school.
Yeah, yeah, we all know that. But the rough correspondence between WAR and HOF choice is clear. The old school supports the new to a certain extent. Some things are obvious. But reverence for the intellectual competence and professional integrity of baseball writers/voters generally would be foolish. These days, with WAR et al, their hack work is just easier.
I’m not sure Harold Baines got in because of his WAR ….
Of the top 65 in WAR all time, all but Bonds, Clemens, ARod and Pete Rose are in the HOF. The remainder of the top 100 are in, too, but for apparent character retributions (Schilling, tied at 66 with Kershaw, Palmeiro, 93). Rolen weighs in tied at 102. The induction of Harold Baines simply shows in a gaudy way that the voters occassionally can do whatever the fuck they want to do and that they like to demonstrate that fact, too.
You’re still a good lawyer!
The bwhaha writers voters have elected only 130 hofers, and that includes some managers and execs. The various veteran/exec/”media” committees are responsible for over 180–including Baines. The writers on their own play it safe, while fucking over guys they hate.
okay okay
I love baseball draft day even if I’ve never heard of any of em which is usually the case.
The shock of Wisely getting a bunt hit was to much for Freeland to shoulder..
Hope they were able to pop it back in place like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon..
Webb or Doval?
Good for Kapp to go with Webb, give the shutout a shot…
Iron Man on the stadium organ doesn’t quite make me want to smash my head through a wall…
Webb shutout !
Sweet way to end the first half.
Got to get that offense going after the break…
Under 2 hours?
1 hour, 56 minutes.
Amazing…
Clutch start / win by Webb!
A Webb gem!
1:56 game duration ties for all-time shortest game at ATT Park…
Nice of Webb to give Camilo an extra day off before AS festivities. Bet the kid thinks of a suitable gift.
That 9th inning might be the loudest I’ve heard Giants fans all season.
Fans love Webb. He’s earned it.
Shutouts really are cool. Great job by Webb, 0 BBs 10 Ks.
Marichal had 52 of them with SF. 1965 he had 10, in 37 starts/295 innings.
And wasn’t quite the same in September after the suspension…
Gaylord btw holds Giants record with 4 consecutive ones in 1970, from September 6 to 19 on his way to winning 23 games. Also Giants record 40 consecutive scoreless innings.
Since an unearned run would (I guess) break a consecutive scoreless inning streak, that adds a pretty big element of luck to it…
What a fantastic game.
The algorithm that put the Giants 16th in the first round of the draft sucks. Texas picks 4th; Atlanta 11th. I think payrolls should factor in with more force. Right now I think they look at revenue sharing status. Wtf are the Giants paying the rest of them for?
Texas spent what, $800,000,000 the last couple seasons?
Last year their payroll was almost exactly the mlb median but they tanked, utterly. Yet they’re an algorithmic lottery winner this year.
MLB draft is pretty much a crap shoot. Draft position in round #1 isn’t that critical, I think. You can point to Buster, Timmy, Bum, Cain; but then also to Beede, Bickford, Crick, Brown, Noonan, Stratton, etc.
Logan Webb was a 4th round pick…
Buster Timmy Bum — that’s a pretty strong list. Bart, well. (Cain was around the 22nd pick, iirc.) Nonetheless, your chances are better, even if slightly, the higher your pick. Top ten pick gives you some edge.
The crowd went nuts when Webb came out of the dugout in the 9th. And he sure didn’t disappoint.Great game to see.
We were near the last flapaapalooza a couple years ago when we sat on top of the RF wall.
Giants now currently occupy a playoff spot.
Thank you for not saying “if the season ended today”…
Yeah. Moved back ahead of Brewers and Phils. In Pittsburgh for start of road trip after break.
Cleveland in first place in AL Central at 45-45. Twins half game back, 45-46. ?
Ssssnakes lose. Dogs now tied for 1st. Being 2.5 out at the break is pretty much great expectations for this ragtag rotation. At least get Wood back in the mix. And Winn.
holy shit, the Giants picked a HS pitcher almost as tall as Hjelle.
Giants pick:
Bryce Eldridge, 6′- 7″ two way player out of a VA high school…
I’m sure he’ll be ready for major league mop up duty by 2029…
In todays baseball I’d prefer a college guy. gets to MLB quicker. The pick wasn’t in the predraft top 20:(
That is an interesting pick. I don’t like it but interesting none the less. He’s young enough to grow in both pitching and hitting. Who knows maybe if he develops a wicked fastball he be a Randy Johnson. Or maybe a home run hitting Willie Mac/Dave Kingman.
Just read where he bats left but throws right. So there goes Randy Johnson.
Could still be Ohtani…
Giants are trying to corner the next “American Othani” with last year drafting 2-way player Reggie Crawford LHP /DH and now Bryce Eldridge RHP/1B/OF I’m excited about this pick and Farhan’s thinking 🤔 on this. Both these kids are built solid height and weight with raw power that just need to be refined.
Same with the pitching but both hit 95 plus on the FB so that’s a good start..Let’s see if the Giants can sign this kid he’s only 18 and has a commitment to Alabama but that means squat, just think Kyle Harrison who was headed to UCLA then the Giants swooped in with extra bonus signing money and the rest is history..
since 1965 the Giants have drafted 34 High School kids in the first round. Lots of notable names too.
Last time we picked to High Schoolers in the first two rounds was in 2017.
