A Man Pitched Yesterday
Flavor said, on July 8, 2023 at 7:13 am (Edit)
I don’t even care what the record is. I just hate it. It’s pussy baseball. Give me a starter who can pitch all game. That’s the baseball I miss. All this namby pamby 1 inning bullshit is lame.

And as if the baseball Gods were listening, I was given yesterday’s gift.
Thank you, baseball Gods.
What a way to hit the break.
This #1 pick Bryce Eldridge is a Northern Virginia kid. Friend lives and grew up in same town and he said this kid was all the talk and is a phenom. At 6’7” does he stick as a hitter or really be a legit two-way player? It would seem his stock as a potential starter is far more likely, but that is what I said about Ohtani.
Speaking of Ohtani, he in my mind signs 100% with the F’n Flodgers, Giants likely know that and Angels definitely think that. What would it take to land him for a couple months? How much could the Angels ask? Joey Bart worth than dangle? Couple other top 20 prospects too much to offer or too little for couple months of Ohtani???
yes. that would not be enough.
Joey for a couple of months of Ohtani? The commissioner would nullify that trade under his power to manage the public image of baseball.
I think we have our catcher of the future in Bailey with Sabol as a backup. Bart has underwhelmed and IMO a couple of months of Ohtani to give us a more legit playoff run is well worth it. I personally can’t see how Angels could demand more than Bart a couple mid-tier prospects as a rental. Worth the gamble in my mind to have a potential Ohtani-Webb-Cobb with Ohtani’s cleanup bat to maybe make a crazy playoff run…
Oh I agree. That would be a good trade for the Giants.
The Dodgers are negotiating a sign and trade deal with the Angels and Ohtani’s agent as I type. Something like Outman or Sheehan, plus their top catching prospect, with $55 million per, for seven or eight years to Ohtani. It’s doubtful he’ll still be pitching by the end of his contract.
Farhan might have pissed away two 1st round picks chasing unicorns.
$55 mill a year for 8 years is still massive and would amount to $440 mill but people were putting $600 mill and even mlb people suggesting a $700 mill contract. Why would Ohtani take $150-$250 mill less?
IMO, Ohtani’s peak value is literally this week, certainly for the Angels. He could get hurt, or the economy might tank.
In the post-Covid world we live in, and the way baseball has changed, it’s apparent one player, even a great two-way player like Ohtani, can’t move the needle, in what’s become a war of attrition. You need a dozen guys to back up the guys who get hurt and fatigued, and a dozen more to replace the back-ups.
While several teams might bid on him, there are only two cities that would generate the added marketing value that will push Ohtani into the billionaires club. He seems like more of a West Coast guy, and he’s probably already decided where he wants to play.
If he wants to remain with the Angels, then of course he’ll wait until the season is over, if it’s the Dodgers, he might want to start there this weekend.
well, there have been 7 complete games so far this season in NL, and 6 shutouts. Leaders in both categories all have 1, including Webb.
Webb is also tied in NL for lead in starts, with 19.
I wouldn’t trade for him unless the Angels are just in dump mode. Which is highly doubtful.
Doesn’t Cobb have a CG as well?
Yes he does.
List is: Alcantara, Cobb, Fried, Keller, Peterson, Stroman and Webb.
Speaking of “pussy baseball” yesterday’s Yankee game was the prototype.

wow, not high pitch count either. Fans I’m sure not happy.
Overall I think Kap has done dang good job managing pitching staff, not an area of strength for him in past imo. Despite issues with Manaea Stripling and others Giants are still 3rd best in NL for ERA and top 5 for runs against overall.
Giants at or near top NL for FIP, fewest HRs allowed, and for most Ks.
Schmitt was a two way player in college. Hell, so was Buster. Who knows how these HS kids will develop.
WTF? Everything will be pay-per-view.

Yeah both managers Boone&Ross were in weird frame of minds in this game.
Boone for pulling him with a one hitter and the lead which they blew, I’m laughing at that.
Then Ross getting tossed early bitchin about some strike calls in the dugout and the ump gave him the thumb.First thing he told the ump when he came out, :”Geez your a couple hours away from your 3 day vacation and u still want to toss me?”
Re two way players, Reggie Crawford of course threw his elbow out in college and is healing from TJ. From NYT’s own the athletic today:
“Only five of the first 32 players selected in the first round were pitchers and only one was a high school pitcher (not including two-way player Bryce Eldridge, whom the Giants took at No. 16), which demonstrates how much front offices have devalued high school arms because of the high risk of them either regressing or undergoing some type of surgery between the time they’re drafted and (hopefully) reach the major leagues.”
Yeah, I just read yesterday that the NY Times bought the Athletic. I wonder if it will go the route of most East Coast sports departments do. Hopefully they will stay pretty much the same without the east coast arrogance.
The NYTimes sports page has been a nothingburger for years. Only good for the occassional national or regional feature. It doesn’t even have beat reporters for the NY teams…
Ohtani’s not putting the Giants over this year or any other year.
And they would never pay that kind of money to anyone.
Especially after dodging overpriced bullets this past off-season…
Joc might be a good fit for the Yanks…
Joc and Wilmer both seem tradeable.
My Yanks buddies want Yaz.
Ohtani, much less ANYONE else is not worth $55 million. See how that’s been working out with the Angels (and they have Trout too). Next brilliant idea . . .
But he’s two players in one! Yeah, so a groin injury fucks you twice.
“Yeah, so a groin injury fucks you twice.”
Exactly. I don’t think Johnson, et. al., are in the habit of “burning” money.
No they just give it away to right wing nutjobs.
Yes, sadly to say.
Basketball salaries like max extensions blow me away too. Isn’t Klay Thompson due $43 mil this season, after making $40 million this past year?
It truly is obscene.
There are 30 teams in the NBA. Assuming total revenue is $9 billion per year, average revenue per team is $300 million. That coupled with a FAIR revenue sharing agreement is why they are the “ideal” owner/player revenue system.
MLB saw revenues of between $10.8-$10.9 billion . . . Of course it gets diced and sliced a lot more due to roster sizes, coaches, etc., etc.
All that being said, the Giants will be “all-in on Ohtani” next season. Of course no player is worth what they are getting. But they are getting it because that’s how the Billionaire Boys Club rolls.
This 6′-7″ first round kid will end up a pitcher. Same with Reggie Crawford in SJose.
How many 6′-7″ successful hitters are there? Judge, Winfield, Frank Howard? Maybe a very few others.
Ohtani is “only” 6′-4″…
He’ll probably grow a bit more
Willie Mac was 6′ 4″ also.
Heliot named PCL player of the week. 1.603 OPS 4 HRs. 14hits.
Ramos won’t be 24 until September. Maybe he’s finally figuring something out. He’s been with the Giants since June 2017…
His older brother has been a long-term AAA guy with occasional brief visits to mlb.
I’m intrigued by level of confidence – or lack of same – other Giants fans have in team at All-Star break. Clearly a surprising and satisfying 1st half. Performance of Bailey, Doval and unheralded relief corps including call-ups from Sacramento all positives. But often I think Giants are achieving with smoke and mirrors. They’re 8 above .500 with only two reliable starters and everyday lineup which is definition of mediocrity. Will bullpen show signs of overuse in 2nd half? I don’t think Giants will be sellers at trade deadline simply because they don’t have marquee value on roster to leverage. Conversely, If they maintain .540-.550 winning percentage, will they be buyers? Who has the answers?
What would you expect from a bunch of deplorable malcontents?
Maui Ahuna. Sounds like a lucky baseball name to me. Steal of a pick. Now can they land him?
They do love their baseball in Hawaii.
They would have to absolutely tank to be sellers. And who would they sell? Wilbur? Pederson? Sure. It feels like we could let them go for something but it would be more prospects.
Cobb has a club option for next year. He should get us a decent load if we put him on the block.
That’s the thing. At this point, it is the younger players who are the biggest contributors to their success so losing either Wilbur or Joc wouldn’t hurt the team that much. Cobb would, but I don’t see the team selling. They should be able to stick around this level of success. They play .500 ball and they are 85-77. Which is in playoff territory.
But being buyers they don’t have much to offer either. Villar and Bart are the obvious guys but I don’t see them getting rid of any of their top prospects. Say what you will about Z not wanting any pitching, I still think getting a starter is a priority. They have enough to cover for Estrada with Fitzgerald I’d think, but I’d hazard a guess they may go after someone with Villar and Bart and a middling prospect. Enough for Strohman? Who knows? Teams give away stars for less than that when they know they aren’t gonna pony up the big money for a multi-year contract.
From Keith Law’s draft overview (he projected Eldridge as a 16 pick):
“Eldridge wants to be a two-way player, although his future is much more likely to come as a hitter. He’s 6-foot-7 with a short swing for his size, generating power but also staying short enough to the ball that he might be able to cover more of the zone than most guys that height do — I’ve written many times about the high failure rate of hitters 6-7 and up. He’s athletic enough to play an outfield corner, but stayed at first base in high school to preserve his arm. He’s got the fastball and delivery to be a pitcher, but hasn’t shown any feel to spin the ball yet and would require so much more time as a pitcher that I worry it will hamper his development as a hitter. He also had a lingering ankle issue this spring that might delay his pro debut.”
This is a little different draft for us usually by now we have 4 or more pitchers.
Um, in TA column by Baggs today on Webb and shutout, long comment ended with following:
“Kudos to Baggs and Brisbee…even the deplorable malcontents at One Flap Down for adding to the fun.”
That is funny.
That’s freaking hilarious Willie.
Comment was from John B. Takes me back to the early days of the splash (is that what it was called?). (“And now we have a call from John, in Walnut Creek.” “Hello, Mick. You may know me from your blog, where I post as Sonofabastard.”)
From Baggs’ piece: “Webb leads the major leagues with 126 innings.” He also says only other SF Giants who’ve hit that lead at the break are Marichal, Perry and Cueto. Webb isn’t having a CY year but he’s damn good.
The scourge of Walnut Creek.
Facebook once recommended him as a person I might know. That old They Might Be Giants album cover was prominently displayed on his home page. He looked like a normal enough guy. Can’t remember his full name.
OMFG, that is hilarious. Desperate malcontents? I’ll show you desperate malcontents!!
Deplorable not desperate.
Very Twin-like…
well, Hillary Clinton, too.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeploraBall
Yeah, it’s a topic.
Could make up for Haniger misfire.
Just read fangraphs profile on Giants prospects, and while they talk about how badly 2022 went for him, they did say, “…still has dangerous power.” And in summary, “If that power can be actualized then we are talking about a short end platoon player.” Weren’t high on OF skills but with Matos in CF corner spot should be fine. Maybe he and Sabol can split LF.
I thought I’d given up on him, but you’re right. He might work it out. I always liked his ferocity.
it’s *dangerous power* when you connect with the baseball. I’m guessing big league pitchers will make short work of him if he gets brought up
Safe bet unfortunately.
Hitting lefties better than Slater does would be a pretty tall order for Ramos, even if he didn’t look completely overmatched by ML pitching. I don’t see how he gets the space to prove anything, unless they send Matos down and go to the CF platoon. Or there’s another injury.
He’s circling down into the 40 man roster expulsion tube.
Well, it ain’t like Ramos is in Dubon territory, AKA old. Ramos is still only 23. He’s still got time to get his shit together. Bailey wasn’t rated for much hitting-wise and he’s doing fine. Schmitt is a bigger worry to me at this point as he hasn’t gotten an XBH in like a month.
Short of incurring Twin’s wrath, is Ramos a real 23? Or is he really 5 years older?
I kid, I kid.
i don’t get these HR derby seedings. I’m tossing 123,8 and just connecting 4567 to try to get something from that combo in the finals.
OF next year likely w/out Conforto and Joc at the least, and Sabol eligible for minor league options iirc, where he could hone C skills, unlike now.
Bat skills of Wisely and Bryce Johnson not much to write home about. There will be more openings in OF than anywhere else, no?
The corporation that owns my local Fox station is in a contract dispute with DirecTV, so it looks like no All Star game for me.
MLB Network will be showing an edited two hour version on Wednesday, and that’s fine.
boom, there ya go, just cashed nicely in the HR derby, just depends on how much it’s gonna be now. Had 3/4 in the semis and Rosey knocking Robert out confirms victory.
Gambling is the only thing that could make that boring event interesting.
Weird, I lost KRON channel 4 due to some sort of random squabble.
And WTF is Stars on Mars? All I know is Rhonda Rousey is punching Lance Armstrong, and Warren Sapp is laughing.
Surprise, surprise…

They better hope this poor kid wasn’t seriously hurt.
115.8 off the bat.
Looked to me like he didn’t even move his glove…
