NL Wins
That was a fun game to watch. Definitely entertaining. And our 2 reps performed admirably. The one thing that ruined it were the uniforms. I’d love to hear the argument for those. It can’t be marketing. There is NO WAY any sane person would buy one of those for themselves.
Players playing the game in their home uni is the only acceptable look and I want to know why this changed.
The other stupid thing is that when the national league all-stars were announced, they were all wearing regular athletic shoes instead of their baseball cleats? Why? Stupid look…are they ballplayers or not? Fortunately, I turned it back on the game in time to catch Cobb first and then not expecting Doval in the 7th, I just made it back to the game to catch his strike three high hitter to Julio Rodriquez!
Kruk on major rant this am on knbr about kids on the field during HR derby. Loo was 10 years ahead of him
At least!
A Brooklyn dumbo with an 11th grade education schooling the Ivy Leaguers…
Noticed in box score about half of all the AS players were of Hispanic origin. So what I want to look up is how they came to be on ML rosters in first place. Giants scouts signed Doval out of small town in DR in 2015 at age 18 per recent story in Chron.
Per another story in Chron, Cobb rode into game on bus with Opie, whom he’s even older than by few months. Kinda cool Kershaw (on the IL) went even though he wasn’t gonna pitch.
Melissa Lockard in TA has rundown on Giants draft selections post first round, and one of later ones is from same Academy in PR as Heliot Ramos.
I love reading her stuff. She’s really good.
Eight of the Latino ASs were Cuban, right? Totally different origin.
This is just another example why baseball has become a clown show! The hideous/awful looking jerseys will go down as the WORST look ever in AS game history.Throw in an N or an A on their batting helmets as well was just as dumb!
It’s no wonder fans can’t connect when they can’t even tell who the players are anymore?
It was so much better back in the 60’s thru 90’s more when teams wore their OWN Traditional Team Uniforms where people watching on TV would instantly know the player and team they follow and realize this is how Real Baseball should look, not a clown show for corporate buttwipers ruining it..
those uni’s were so bad that when the NL guys were getting introduced I was like “when are they going to get into the uni’s? The game starts in like 20 minutes” lmao
Maybe you guys just didn’t realize that per the press release, the uniform “celebrates Seattle’s unique position as a beacon of nature, groundbreaking technology and cultural progress to inspire the next generation of diamond athletes. The Nike MLB 2023 All-Star Game Jersey honors the region’s natural beauty with a print that blends elements of its neighboring ocean, forests, topography and the movement of air. Nature also informs the base colors of the jersey — the American League jersey (Home) boasts light teal hues while the National League (Away) jersey sports dark navy hues.”
I’m sure the next generation of diamond athletes was greatly inspired…
The AL ones weren’t hideous. They were very much Mariners-ish. The NL ones were horse shit.
The only thing I can think of is that with the uniform uniforms they’re trying to convey the teamness of each side to counter the impression that winning the game is less important than it once was.
I agree part of the fun was looking at the various unis
MLB most likely trying to get fans to buy these one-off All-Star unis, although who would wear those hideous unis is beyond me. As always, it’s all about the $$$.
Thinking about old all-star games reminded me that when I was a kid next to Mays my favorite player was Stan the man Musial. Definitely a player along the lines of Ted Williams but unlike Williams I remember Musial.
Luis Arraez was signed November 2013 by Twins as Int’l FA and played in Dominican Summer League 2014 at age 17, then for couple seasons in Venezuela (country of birth) Winter League. ML debut 2019 with Twins.
Amazing contrast of baseball. 20 rounds of drafts, mostly HS/college standouts with slotted signing $$ at top, and yet all these All Stars at top of their profession from humbler backgrounds.
How could we have possibly enjoyed the All Star game in the old days without all of the in-game interviews?
What’s more riveting than an in-game interview?
Who doesn’t want their TV screen split into two smaller screens?
Esp with a bunch of fat-ass ex-players hamming it up like beached whales.
Whoever is marketing the game should be drawn and quartered. It is absolute lunacy.
Not being nearly as into the players as I used to be, the unis were an indicator of who the fuck I was looking at. Esp in the AL.
And you DID have a lot of repeat guys back in the day. I mean, Bench was catching for 10 years. Mays, Aaron, and Clemente were the OFers.
Yesterday I had no idea who was who.
And miking guys on the field? Brilliant. If ever there was a fight to break out, or miking Bummie with Joe West, it might be interesting. Otherwise, zzzzzzzzzzz.
Here’s the kid getting clocked.
What’s so fucked up is now they just fire pitches without letting the hit balls land.
The arod/big papi thing was cringy.lb trying to recreate what TBS has with Barkley and Shaq and that isn’t happening with those 2 doofs
Just keeps on proving the adage that baseball players are fucking idiots.
Yeah, the athletes are incredibly repititious and boring. If they were saying interesting things, that would be something, but they rarely do.
I guess the producers think we are so star-struck that we just marvel to hear the athletes speak, no matter what drivel they’re saying.
When I was a kid, Bobby Bonds was my favorite baseball player and I never personally saw a single interview with him. I rarely saw interviews with athletes.
I read good baseball books, and that was good enough for me. “Ball Four,” “Year of the Tiger,” and others.
I was fortunate to grow up a few blocks from a library. That library had the SF Chronicle newspaper also. And that was cool. (Although the newspapers were on those awkward bamboo pole things.)
With the use of openers likely continuing, just curious because I don’t remember: does anyone recall if any team in recent years used openers in any games in the post-season? I don’t think so, but just curious if that’s been done yet.
Recent years? Not certain. Good Wiki article about Openers. Not called openers back in the 1920s, but first use was game 7 of the 1924 World Series, the Washington Senators had their starting pitcher, the right-handed Curly Ogden, pitch to only two batters and then brought in a left-handed pitcher, with the intent of locking the opposing team into their left-handed lineup.
Of course, most folks know that Tampa Bay used openers in 2018, including the playoffs (A’s, Brewers) and here we are . . .
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opener_(baseball)#:~:text=In%20his%202016%20book%2C%20Ahead,the%20opposing%20team's%20batting%20order.
Paul, Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly started Game 5 of 2021 NLCS vs. Braves. Got knocked out in the first inning but LA won 11-2. Scherzer was burnt out by end of the year and Roberts was scrambling.
Cory Knebel started game 1 for them then too followed by Phil Bickford He started 4 games in regular season for them out of 27 appearances, rest in relief.
Oy, Knebel also was opener in Game 5 vs. Giants. Still trying to forget that one arrgghh
Thanks, I didn’t remember the use of openers in the post-season, but now that you mention LA….
Yeah I wondered about them first. dunno if anyone else has done it more recently.
Took Roberts 6 pitchers to beat Giants in that Game 5.
