A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Taking Pittsburgh To Brown Town

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 15, 2023

Didn’t see the game but it appears to be a nice and tidy 6-4 W. It’s funny how many Giants fans there are in Portland. It’s like the Bay Area, everyone loves them.

You all will be happy to know that I won the putting contest I flew up here for yesterday.

Steph Curry has Day one lead in Tahoe golf.
Braves recalled Dereck Rodgriguez to cover for reliever on IL. He’s pitched handful of ML innings last 2 years (and 2.2 this season), but mostly in AAA since bombing out with Giants.

Trade proposal rumor out there..Harrison,Luciano,&Whisenhut for Shoei Othani…
So the #14 MLB ranked player in Harrison #67 in Luciano &#70 in Whisenhut for easily the best player in baseball, and branding name with the face of the franchise the Giants haven’t had since Bonds? The stickler for me is could they lock him in past the rental time? Giants would atleast have 2 months on other teams to get him signed which will be a huge advantage! Othani instantly upgrades the pitching staff and we all know what power is in that bat hitting 3rd cause I want as many AB’s as possible from him..Thoughts?

      Sure would be exciting.
      Why not?
      I ain’t gettin any younger…

Only if they can do a sign and trade, otherwise that could be devastating to the Giants.
If he’s already decided he wants to sign with the Dodgers, it’s entirely possible he shuts himself down as a pitcher.
He’s got a blister now, and has a Tommy John elbow. His value long term is as a hitter, and as such, may have crossed the Giants off his list.
Luciano, Villar, Hjellie, maybe Ramos for two months of Ohtani, eight fewer bullpen games and 150 fewer Pederson/Flores ABs.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 15, 2023 at 2:56 pm

      HELL No.
You give up 3 top prospects for an injury prone rental who will be a Dodger by end 2023?…

  3. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 15, 2023 at 10:37 am

I think btw Statcast data and Giants hitting coaches they can help unlock Matos at plate as he plays more (76 ABs so far) and they can crunch more data. Totally different environment facing ML pitching every day and uniqueness of the O, especially at night.
what pitches/where can he drive, what he needs to lay off, bat path through zone, hands/stance/load yada yada. Giants have done wonders with others (Wade Jr. Yaz etc.) providing path to success.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 15, 2023 at 10:38 am

And as Mr. Schmitt is learning, game of adjustments at this level.

    • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on July 15, 2023 at 12:53 pm

F.P. Santangelo said it was easier for him to play in the majors. Better lighting, batter’s backdrops, groundskeeping, and food.
I predict Matos will start mashing and get some ROY consideration. Schmitt will take longer, has to hit the other way and lay off the splitters and sliders.

I’m in with Ohtani if Brass is going to pony up $600 million.
Those guys for a rental? Does he make them a WS contender? No issue trading Luciano. Harrison? Excited about him, but how can this guy be seen as a #1 or 2 starter if he can only throw 4 innings a start? Press isn’t worried, but 1/2 a season in and not one start past the 5th?

    • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on July 15, 2023 at 1:25 pm

Ohtani WOULD make the team more likely to make or advance in the playoffs THIS YEAR, certainly more than Luciano or Harrison, but not as much as people assume.
The Giants record in the bullpen games is very good. Pederson and Flores have 16 HRs between them, and can play the field if necessary.
The biggest problem with Ohtani may be his motivation and interference from his agent. It feels like he’s thinking about next year. He may not put himself on the line for a team he’s not interested in playing for in 2024.
It’s doubtful he gets $600 million. He’ll probably sign for 55-60 million per for about seven years.

  5. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 15, 2023 at 12:08 pm

Big no on Ohtani. He’s unbelievably injury prone (13 noted injuries since 2018):

In fact, he is injured today, as reported in many online sports pages.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 15, 2023 at 12:26 pm

How could the franchise that rejected Correa on the basis of medical history and current health ok Ohtani?

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 15, 2023 at 12:32 pm

Good point xoot (I hadn’t thought about that). Yeah, I just don’t see that happening. It would be incongruous/out of character for the Giants, particularly after the Correa situation.

    • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on July 15, 2023 at 1:07 pm

Yup. He’s overrated as a pitcher for this very reason.
Also, two way players are generally more interested in their hitting stats, so he may have already crossed the Giants off his short list.
While the extra roster spot a two way player gives you is valuable, it’s kind of like having a hybrid car/boat. The maintenance required for each function is different, and in the NL West, your car should also be able to run down fly balls.

I’m in the no way camp also. I still don’t believe he wants to be here. He personally might win us quite a few games but so might the 3 players mentioned. The whole scenario just doesn’t feel like the Giants way

  8. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on July 15, 2023 at 3:20 pm

I get trading prospects is scary but Ohtani over rated as a pitcher? If you looked at just his pitching the last 2-3 years he would be our best pitcher.

    • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on July 15, 2023 at 3:49 pm

Logan Webb is a better pitcher than Ohtani, if given the chance, may even be a better hitter.
He’s overrated as far as what he’ll be paid for his pitching in his next contract. It’s entirely possible he never surpasses his career high of 166 IPs or still be effective four or five years from now.
Long Covid may be a factor for pitchers over 30, his TJ surgery may be another. Didn’t he have an issue with his feet?
His hitting prowess is more bankable long term. He might stop starting or pitching altogether at some point.

If we are talking rental we get the 2nd best hitter, and a top 10 pitcher at the same time. Would we give up 3 prospects for Acuna Jr AND Stroman…Ah Yes!

Yogi must of stole a bad picnic basket full of spoiled food, thinking Logan Webb could be a better hitter then Ohtani who has more HR’s(112 )the last 3 years other then Judge

    • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on July 15, 2023 at 6:17 pm

It’s hyperbole. You need to use a grain or two of salt on your food if you’re eating here.
Webb is absolutely a more valuable starter who will almost certainly pitch longer.

    • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on July 15, 2023 at 6:28 pm

In 2021, Webb got an RBI for every 6.57 ABs
Last year, Ohtani got an RBI every 7.01 ABs

Something else too: OK Ohtani gets Giants into playoffs, fine. along with 11 other teams. Last season 3 teams in NL won 100 games, including Dogs who won 111. None of above even made it to NLCS, let alone got to the WS, nor of course won it.
