A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

More Cow Bell

Keeping Cobb cobbled together for an entire season was always going to be a chore. Are we down to 1 reliable starting pitcher? Methinks we need more.

I’m off to San Diego with TBO.

The Giants the last couple games decided to go on vacation with Flav to the Pacific Northwest.

Was quite surprised to see Luciano get moved up right after seeing him. But it makes sense to see him produce at maybe a more advantageous AAA level. Have a great remainder of vaca…

Enjoy Del Mar Flav. Looking forward to return of Britney Eurton and Andie B. etc.
Ah Cobb didn’t have usual command, gonna happen once in a while.
    AZ and Phils lost too.
Giants pitching still Top 4 NL for runs allowed per game, #1 fewest BBs, 4th Ks.

It’s offense of everyone not named Wilmet that is sliding downhill. 10th NL for BA, 8-8-9 for OB slugging OPS. They don’t steal bases and the light hitting middle IF flat out sucks at the plate. Time for change in plan and it has to be better than calling up more prospects from Sac.

For you, Zumie. Almost sorry to post this, but Chuck Berry’s face is just too funny. I’m into strange and different things, but I will never understand this. What coud have been a memorable performance becomes well, a cat thrown in a dryer. During the next song, the sound engineer cut her mic.

Would like to hear zumiee’s take on that lady yoko ono

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 21, 2023 at 8:58 am

The bottom line on Yoko, to me, is that she helped make John a better person. She helped John learn to respect women as equals to men. And he and she loved each other very much.
One of things John admired about her was her absolute fearlessness. She just didn’t care if people made fun of her, or were hostile about her.
I’m as skeptical of any artistic talent in her as anyone, but I’ll always appreciate what she did for John as a person.
John got cheated out of the 2nd half of his life by an assassin. It would have been great to see the person he would have been in those years.
Musically, he had already accomplished so much, and who knows what else he might have done. Maybe transitioned into different things musically, like Paul Simon did. We’ll never know.

Zummiee, everything you said is probably true but she irritated me to no end. In John she had the perfect vessel for notoriety.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 21, 2023 at 9:28 am

One of the most heartbreaking things about losing John is Julian losing his father when his father had finally become a real dad.

Actual glimpse of the avant garde back then.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 21, 2023 at 9:49 am

Yeah, John was abusive. He was a shitty father. All that may be true, but Yoko’s ‘singing’ was awful and pointless. There’s avante garde and there’s just flat awful screeching.

And I think the Pop-O-Pies are good. I dig Primus. Zappa. And Sean’s work with Les Claypool is epic.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 21, 2023 at 10:10 am

Zappa was avant garde? His idol Nicolas Slonimsky may have been, but Zappa was just an unusual rock star. Unpleasant as her singing was, no one would give a shit about that lifeless jam between John and Chuck B if she hadn’t been there.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 21, 2023 at 11:17 am

Zappa was pretty much the definition of avante garde when he started with the Mothers. No one anywhere was doing anything remotely like Zappa. Wish I was around back then.

As far as Yoko goes, she certainly didn’t make it more enjoyable. Her work with her husband seemed to consist of trying to overshadow whatever he was doing at any given time.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 21, 2023 at 11:36 am

Zappa was pretty much the definition of a teenage notion of avant garde. Wiki pages may still call him avant garde. But that’s wiki. I remember when I first looked at Roberto Clemente’s wiki page, it claimed that he stole home 19 times in his career. I ain’t no musicologist, but when I listen to Zappa I often hear how insistently he avoided the blues, unlike his pal Captain Beefheart. Zappa famously dissed his contemporaries, includiing Hendrix, who in his view mainly just played the blues. So Zappa sounded unique.

Early 20th century, N Slonimsky used a typewriter as percussion in a chamber piece and a cat, which the musician played by yanking its tail, as a brief soloist.

Yeah, John had bored of performing live by then. He liked Yoko adding something unusual to the performance, whether the audience liked it or not..
John did seem to enjoy the rooftop Beatle concert a lot. But he knew it was a one-off.
I doubt John would have ever toured again.
George was done with concerts, too, other than charity benefits. I think John would have continued to do the occasional charity benefit performance.

Appearing on the Mike Douglas Show together may have been part of Lennon’s settlement of Chuck’s copyright claim against him. In the official version of the performances, Chuck Berry shows some life during Johnny B Goode.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 21, 2023 at 1:28 pm

Yeah, John was sued over the use of the line “Here come ol’ Flat Top” in “Come Together.” That’s a line from a Berry song.
“Come Together” was one of John’s favorite Beatle songs. Ringo has said it’s one of his favorites, too.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 21, 2023 at 1:33 pm

He took a lot more than one lyric line. Listen to Chuck Berry’s You Can’t Catch Me and imagine it at a slower tempo. But they’re both great songs.

MLB.COM lists trade proposals for 9 teams who would have interest in Ohtani…

    GIANTS PROPOSAL
    Giants get: Shohei Ohtani

Angels get: SS Marco Luciano (Giants No. 2 prospect, No. 15 overall), LHP Carson Whisenhunt (Giants No. 4 prospect, No. 93 overall), OF Heliot Ramos (Giants No. 18 prospect), C Joey Bart, DH Joc Pederson

After the Giants missed out on Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa this past offseason, the general consensus was that they had a solid roster at their disposal, but they needed a superstar. With San Francisco in possession of the top National League Wild Card spot and 1 1/2 games out of first place in the NL West entering play on Wednesday, that largely remains true.

Who better than Ohtani to provide that superstar factor?

The Giants have been buyers at the Trade Deadline once during Farhan Zaidi’s tenure as president of baseball operations — in 2021 — and they made a splash by acquiring Kris Bryant from the Cubs that year. That signals that the team isn’t opposed to dealing for a rental, but Ohtani’s price figures to be in another stratosphere.

This package might not be enough to convince the Angels to part ways with their two-way superstar, but it’s certainly a start. Ramos hasn’t been able to carve out his place in the Giants’ crowded outfield mix, while Luciano is close to Major League ready after his recent promotion to Triple-A Sacramento. Whisenhunt has risen quickly through the Giants’ system since being selected in the second round of the 2022 Draft.

It’s hard to imagine San Francisco giving up three of its Top 30 prospects — and a handful of proven contributors at the big league level — for two months of Ohtani. But any team that acquires Ohtani at the Deadline may also get a head start on locking him in on a long-term contract in the offseason, so it’s possible that no price is too high when it comes to that kind of generational talent. – Sonja Chen

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 21, 2023 at 1:44 pm

Kris Bryant was exactly the player the Giants needed in 21, although it didn’t work out perfectly. They traded Alexander Canario and Caleb Kilian to get him. This season we don’t have two aces in the rotation and Buster Posey leading a squad of resurgent vets. To hell with the superhero fantasy. Get some pitching, don’t sell the farm for it.

This. the idea they “get a head start on locking him in” is puro nonsense. No way he doesn’t go full on into free agency open to highest bidder and signing best contract in history. It will be totally open season with everything (opt outs bonuses yada yada) on table.
And for another, as LH (his real value going forward) he could pick more than few better places to hit in.

A lot of people forget how hostile Beatles fans were towards Linda McCartney for several years. She was deemed “not pretty enough” by a lot of fans.

Yes, even though that marriage in Oct ’68 was completely understandable. History is replete with royal marriages of convenience and of promoting peace/security; she was American royalty. After RFK was murdered earlier that year, she desperately felt she needed to get away from a crazy US and get that added security for herself and her young kids, despite having secret service protection. For Onassis, he got the class by marriage in exchange for some millions that he wouldn’t miss, class that he couldn’t get otherwise, though he was filthy rich. It didn’t last long, but served it’s purpose for her sake given the time and circumstances…

Yeah, the general public tends to feel like they need to give their approval or disapproval to celebrities’ relationship choices.
I admit I was negative about Neil Young divorcing his wife Pegi and marrying Darryl Hannah. But, hey, it’s none of my business. And Neil and Darryl seem very happy together.
David Crosby said some negative things about Neil’s relationship with Darryl and Neil ended his friendship with David. David tried to patch things up but Neil wasn’t having it.
My theory on Crosby’s statements is that he was negative about Hannah accusing Jackson Browne of physical abuse of her. Browne has totally denied the allegations but it hurt his reputation for a while.
David believed Browne’s version of events.
