A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Mike Ivie

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 22, 2023

I was seriously bummed out to hear he died. There are a handful of games I remember going to as a kid. That game vs LA was one of them. I remember everything about that moment. Where I was sitting, what everything smelled like around me. The brilliant sunshine that day.

I’ve said this before but that was the loudest I’ve ever heard anything in my life. I couldn’t even see straight it was so loud when that ball went over the wall. My first concert was Van Halen at the Cow Palace sitting right next to the speakers. That was nothing compared to that Ivie bomb.

Mike Ivie gave me a moment I’ll never forget and he’ll always be special to me for that.

I heard the grand Ivie HR on the radio a thousand miles away. Unbelievable. We celebrated. Few months later, sold out Stick, he again came to the plate bases loaded vs the bums. The roar was deafening. Then a SFO jet flew over, magnifying the roar and casting a cross-shaped shadow hex over the pitcher as he came set. And Ivie whiffed. But that astonishing collective tumult was one moment among a thousand that day that settled it for me. I was now a Giants fan.

Great post, so many good reasons to be a Giants fan and a good sunny day at the stick is definitely one of them.

I never realized that when he cut loose and screamed hysterically Cal announcer Joe Starkey was trying to imitate the inimitable Lon Simmons at his most passionate. Most of Lon’s career was before my time. What a great moment.

Dom Smith is another ex-Met I was pushing for over the winter.
Would’ve been perfect for us at a lousy $2M/yr.
Excellent defensive 1B, decent lefty bat and reportedly a good dude…

I think the Giants might be a bad team with a good record…

This Nats series will tell a tale.

Giants players couldn’t score in a whorehouse right now..
2nd and 3rd no outs Yaz K’s Villar K’s Schmitt atleast hit the ball but lined out.
When was the last time they scored with RISP??
Then Pence says after Yaz strikeouts well the Giants are real good next man up mentality and Villar will get it done Lol 😂 However Nats have no issues knocking in runs every time their runners are in scoring position.

Joc and JD both may go at the deadline if this slide continues.

Giants play down to the competition like no other team. I look forward to them playing good teams more than the bad ones. LA / Rangers SD / Braves and we might lose 3 games to them both. Shit!
Loved the Ivie video. As a kid I was bummed he made McCovey retire so I never liked him…

PS What is it with SF minors development??? #93 MLB prospect Casey Wisenhunt
    He has 83 K’s in 58 innings, and a whip of 1.02
Yesterday had 5 K’s in 4 innings with 53 pitches. 3 hits. No walks.
He is a starter and has started 16 games. A stud.
in 16 starts with sick numbers he has a total of 58 IPs
Works out to 3.6 innings per start.
Why is he only pitching 4 innings a game??

PPS I know I’m frustrated with this lame losing streak but why isn’t disco starting. Using Alexander as an opener is STUPID. As a lifetime sports fan I (and likely we) know these guys egos are fragile. Keep him in the role he is used to. So annoying..
Watched a little HOF today. Damn McGriff still annoys me for 93!
HOF’s must all laugh at how much the managers try and prove how smart they are!

Kevin Mitchell is one of my all time favorite players, Griff taking him out when Mitch charged Bruce Hurst had to add some points to the voting IMO. That took some huge balls, Hurst should be buying Griff steak dinners every night for saving his ass.

Marty Lurie tweets his interest in trading for Lane Thomas next week. Don’t think that’s what we need. He’s good though.

Dubon with a flashy solo HR bat flip in Oakland. Thing about those minuscule crowds: the fan insults are clear. He’ll hear it now.

Bailed on Giants pretty early last 2 days. Watching horse racing, in 4th at Del Mar jockey Abel Cedillo’s horse stumbled couple strides out of the gate and he was thrown off and landed awkwardly. Lifted off by track attendants and left in ambulance.
won with 17-1 shot on opening day and had winner earlier on the Sunday card.
Hate to see accident like that happen, hope he’s OK.

Kent won the feature today at 16-1. Taking away his personal issues he’s probably my favorite jockey of all time (or in a tie with Eddie D). I have seen painfully few innings of games over the last 9 days although maybe you could argue that hasn’t been painful at all.

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 23, 2023 at 8:35 pm

Eddie D at his peak was as good as it gets.
If not for the personal problems, P. Val coulda been top 3 all time…

Basically a week before the trade deadline. Whatta ya’ll think? What should they do, what can they do, what will they do?…. I don’t even remember what the team did last year at the deadline. Z showed in ’21 he would go out and get someone, with Bryant… But I’m thinking this go around, he’s gonna have to make a bigger splash…

  19. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 23, 2023 at 8:32 pm

With so many teams making the playoffs now, the trade deadline has become distorted.
This isn’t hockey where all you have to do is make the PS to have a shot at a title.
You gotta be a little more realistic, even if you’re in the mix for the PS.
Miracles happen, but Giants aren’t going far and their only untouchables should be Webb,
    Doval and Bailey…

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao's avatar PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on July 23, 2023 at 9:19 pm

Agree about the untouchables, although I might add Matos, just because it’s taken so long for him to get here, kinda think he might be worth keeping to see how he unfolds. Might also add Wisenhunt (but not necessarily Harrison). But other than that… I’d think anyone is in play. Keep seeing trade “proposals”… Bart, Villar, Ramos, etc. No one is going to want our rejects. But the team has the money, and a bunch of lower level players, so you never know.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 24, 2023 at 6:27 am

Agree with you Paul about Matos, but how long it’s taken him to get to the show is sort of relative to his age, as he signed with the Giants at 17 and is “now” only 21 (22 late January of next year).

  20. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 24, 2023 at 7:42 am

Good point Blade these kids get signed out of the DR/PR/Mexico/ etc and other places when their like 16-17 Matos,Luciano,Canário (traded to Cubs for Bryant) and plenty others we remember the names early on and wonder why there not up here but theirs so much development needed, plus, language barriers, housing, etc and alot are still not going to make it maybe a sketchy scout blowing sunshine up their asses come to America I will make your dreams come true..

  21. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 24, 2023 at 8:46 am

I don’t even know how many fuckin WC there are anymore or what the goddamn playoff system is. Everything is over complicated to me.
    I wish it was 1964…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 24, 2023 at 9:01 am

Not certain you mean “everything” or just “everything” MLB. Me? I wish “everything.” So 1964 sounds fine, where the worst thing I had to think about was Barry Goldwater . . . and not all this shit today, e.g., Trump or Biden being President, climate change, nuclear war in Ukraine, etc.
