Tigers
Detroit is still awful but they have arguably their best SP going so this might not be the cakewalk it appears to be. In fact, with Stripless listed as today’s starter maybe the Tigers are the ones viewing this as a cakewalk?
I’ll post Castellani’s post game wrap after each game. If you don’t follow him on twitter, it’s fun to see how far that kid has come in just 3-4 years. He’s open with his autism diagnosis, his depression, alcoholism and bulimia. He loves baseball, man. He’s an easy guy to root for.
Still think most of Giants problems going forward relate to offense. They’re at or near bottom of NL for steals triples and doubles, 10-11-11 for slash line OB slug OPS, 7th HRs, 7-8 runs per game. Middle league or worse for power and speed with too many holes in lineup beside Wilmet, and getting Craw back off IL isn’t gonna solve them.
Yes SPs had bad outings but I can accept those from Cobb and Webb as one offs. Giant still have 4th best team runs against, ERA and FIP. They allow fewest BBs, 3rd fewest HRs and are 4th Ks, kind of things pitching controls. I think there is pitching depth in minors and more innings from Beck and Winn/less from couple other stiffs might help sort rotation. Didn’t work yesterday but openers do have winning record, like them or not. No problem adding to rotation but I think offense is more in need of immediate help.
ok but the Giants are 2nd in most bullpen innings pitched so far (only 1 inning behind terrible Oakland). You can’t just keep running arms out there. These guys aren’t machines. We have 1 reliable SP if, in fact, Cobb can no longer be cobbled together. And it’s entirely possible he’s fading now being that he’s 35 and hasn’t pitched more than 152 innings in a season in 6 years.
If Farhan wants to add arms I’m for that. But if he just wants to stick with the ones he’s got we are fucked this season.
Giants may still be asleep…
Hunter’s got some learning to do about being an analyst. It can’t all be positive boosterism all the time. There does occasionally come a time for some harsh reality criticism.
Very true, Zum…
More concerned about quality than quantity of pen innings. Jackson is back, Brebbia soon.
Cobb started 28 games last year 3-4 less than Webb and Rodon. His last 3 outings before meltdown: 17 innings 4 runs/3 earned 3 BBs 16 Ks. He should be fine and workload non issue; so far he’s having better season than last year.
Rogers boys Walker Alexander Doval, plus Beck and Winn all sound as Kap tries to load manage his way through 162 and some disappointments.
Watching Giants hit (11-10 game notwithstanding), ugh.
Innings are innings my man. That bullpen is gonna be tired if not now then soon. We need more arms
When corporations want a good song for a commercial, they often go for an older song.
Ford is using CCR’s “Up Around The Bend,” a song that is over 50 years old.
Sonic fast food is using Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love,” from the 1980s.
I saw a commercial using “I Did It My Way,” using re-written lyrics.
Many artists won’t allow their songs to be licensed for commercial use and I’d imagine more so when a song is new. Also, I imagine some of the older tunes are probably cheaper to license for commercial use than new hits. If a song is considered Public Domain, I think those are free to use.
I also imagine the ad people pick songs geared towards their target audience, but the costs and copyrights have to also be a major consideration.
Since the Mickey Mouse (C) Extension Act of 1998 (aka Sonny Bono Act rip) the length of copyright is life of the author plus 70 years. Takes a while to break into public domain. (Corporate authors get 120 years or 95 after publication.)
A bit old, but this shows how well trammeled the topic has been. One slight surprise: Dolce and Gabbana using Mingus’s Moanin.

Before I read that, xoot, quick question. If the song was written before 78 the copyright had to be renewed every 20 years (I think). If it isn’t renewed, does it become PD?
Sorry. I fixed that. 1998. The old term was just shorter. Renewal applied to some very old works only, I think. I never bumped into renewal issues. 1998 extension was driven by Disney because Mickey M was about to enter the public domain.
Actually, it looks like renewal terms were important to some works before the sixties. Musical composiitions and sound recordings were treated differently for a time. Don’t remember the details. But I also don’t remember a twenty-year renewal of renewal.
Thanks, I was just curious, I never really dealt with the publishing side of things.
I dealt with registration issues that arose in actual disputes. We had a separate department of bean counters, I mean, transactional specialists, who tended to TM and (c) registration matters. Complex, sometimes, I guess.
Skubal seriously he’s ass but of course the Giants make him look like another Cy Young pitcher 5 shutout innings 2 hits,8K’s yeah their worn down and this extra stupid makeup game sure didn’t help but WTF they can’t continue to not hit..
Of course the Giants have their own trash 🗑️ in Stripling,Manea,Wood they all need to go at deadline.I would rather see Winn,Beck, and either Harrison are Whisenhut try and give you 5 innings then the other rejects who are useless.
Lol skubal is not ass. He’s their best SP who had one bad game since he returned. He’s projected to have an excellent career
Well, Farhan’s way is to find shit on the cheap. I don’t think we do much beyond looking for a couple of mid-level relievers and maybe and IFer or 2.
Maybe Farhan can bank on his rep as a good drafter and fling some prospects at teams that aren’t Luciano or Ramos or Whisenhunt or Harrison. Or Bailey, Schmitt, or Matos for that matter.
A commercial is using part of a Wham song from the 1980s.
3 hits? Didn’t even know the game was on.
I’m not buying the “tired” excuse for the whole team. Everbody goes on long roadies. That’s nothing new. Being at the bottom of the entire league in OPS is not by accident, and is an indicator of a real, consistent offensive weakness and lack of overall talent. Plus, no Thairo is killing them. When this team doesn’t hit HRs, it’s cooked. The rookies are showing lack of adjustment to adjustments, but that’s not unusual either. Matt Williams, blah blah…
Well I was specifically referring to our BP which has essential the most innings pitched this season (1 inning off Oakland) and how that isn’t sustainable with just an average staff (not counting Doval)
I’m with you on the pitching, I’m talking about the whole team, that’s why I mentioned the OPS. I noted the other day that Webb is gassed. I’ve questioned early on how long they can continue to rip through the BPen day after day and not expect some kind of crashing of that at some point later in the season.
Swept by Detroit. Get home and hopefully they can get some wins against the As
Tired and hurt. And their sudden reliance on a bunch of rookies. Schmitt is a ghost. Wisely isn’t bringing much. Villar is not hitting. Throw in some bad starts by the pitching, and there you have it.
A week ago we were riding high on a 5 game road winning streak.
Estrada’s injury is the big problem. Wade is dinged up. And no one is hitting, short of Pederson.
If they can’t beat the A’s then there is a problem.
And Wilbur.
Maybe coming home to cool air will help. Something better. a’s fans are planning to pack the park tomorrow (mainly in LF, I believe) to lead another “SELL” protest. They’ll briefly fall silent after a batter is announced at the top of an inning and then loudly beg some unknown billionaire to buy the team. Word is some teams are banning fans who wear the “SELL” t-shirt. Won’t mean much except here in SF and Oakland. I think it’d be hilarious if the a’s banned the shirts at home. They don’t want fans in the stands anywaay.
WTF are A’s fans planning to do that at Oracle ?
Is that venue supposed to give them any more leverage — which is nothing at all…
wtf are they begging at all? They’re hoping for Bay Area solidarity. Pathetic.
A commercial is using AC/DC’s “TNT.”
well, isn’t the hyped nascar event called “TNT”? I mean, that’s like Dodge using Chris Stapleton’s excellent cover of Al Green’s Like a Ram to sell trucks. Sort of takes the edge off the ad annoyance. Now, Wipeout for toilet paper? No.
“This popup brought to you by Cialis.”
Preparation H once used Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire, with stylized video of a fire-rimmed asshole gradually calming down.
And, of course, “Sweet Caroline” is used in that horrific bar commercial. Worst commercial on TV.
Nats had not swept a series in the last 96 series they played.
Until against the Giants…
The Giants have lost every game that I’ve gone up to DC to see them play, so I quit going. I think I’m 0-7 up there.
96? That seems almost impossible.
Xoot wasn’t joking about that Preparation H commercial:
Same common thread in throes of current 6 game losing streak that applied on heels of last week’s 7 game winning streak and as applicable when Giants fell 6 games under .500 in April and inexplicably climbed 13 games over .500 on July 18th. This team resembles .500 club with underwhelming starting pitching, very strong but overused/tired bullpen and everyday lineup with couple bright spots but overall average to slightly subpar talent.
This has been the same refrain since Farhan Zaidi took over baseball operations in 2019 with one exception: 2021. Don’t buy rental players at trade deadline. And don’t use Harrison or Luciano as possible trade options. Let them flourish in Sacramento and join Giants in 2024 if not sooner.
Muster through with current roster and try to pick up serviceable starting pitcher who can log innings. Might sneak into wild card spot but don’t mortgage future on hopes of improbable playoff run.
Long-term success requires Farhan to finally lure one or two marquee players to Bay Area and farm system to produce next Posey (Bailey?), next Crawford (Luciano?) and next Bumgarner (Harrison?). Yaz, Wade, Cobb all nice reclamation stories but not enough.
Whisenhut’s rising too. Question for me is whether the Giants should sell either Joc or JD this week.
This is the team most here thought we were gonna get at the beginning of the year. Those couple of win streaks were a lot of fun but the reality is we should have taken at least one game from the Nat’s and Detroit.
“innings are innings my man.”
Very true and it takes 1400+ of them to get through a season. But I think most teams are seeing fewer innings from starters and therefore using pen more often. Rodon last season made 31 starts and per game log went full 6 17 times. so 45% of time Giants needed pen guys to get last 3 innings in his starts…and this the Ace.
I’m down with however Kap manages the innings and if his pen guys are better than DeSclafani and Wood, which I’m sure they are, then I say use them. giants seem adept at finding bulk inning relievers and making them effective. so why not do that rather than start Manaea?
Over use certainly could happen. But with Brebbia and Jackson back, they can help plus Beck and Winn. More of these types easier to find than quality SP? We’ll see how Z rolls.
Something else about Giants current roster: most of the better hitters are guys Z has found elsewhere, not from farm. J. D., Estrada, Wade Jr., Joc, Flores, Yaz, plus Sabol and Conforto.
Schmitt has had some bad luck and Matos/Bailey have promise but don’t see any other help imminent. Wisely Bryce J Villar are awful. There’s Bart and Ramos we’re still waiting on, and maybe Luciano is late call up. Fitzgerald and V Brown have very high K rates in minors.
bottom line appears Giants have better value prospects and more of them on pitching side.
Zumiee, with a nod to your nominee, I say this is the worst commercial ever made.
The only part I hear of medication ads is the ending, do not take x if you are allergic to x . . . etc.
Yeah, that Jardiance commercial is definitely a contender.
Times are tough when Ross Stripling’s work is the take away bright spot from a loss.
Could not bring myself to watch/listen to today’s game, looks like it went pretty much as expected. Giants went a combined 2-10 vs. Royals, Tigers and Nats, three of the dregs of MLB. The A’s probably can’t wait to get a shot at this reeling team.
During the 6 game losing streak Giant have scored 9 runs total.
Meanwhile in DC, the Rox are beating up on the Nats, 8-1.
AUGH!
The dream is over.
What can I say?
“It doesn’t matter, it’s nothing but dreamin’ anyhow….”… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt9qbiwslqo
Hadn’t heard that in quite a while. It still sounds great! Holds up very well.
I’m one of those whose favorite all time album is that first Manassas album. That music was so ingrained in me over the years that whenever I hear myself saying ‘it doesn’t matter’ (which I seem to say a lot…), my brain automatically finishes it with “it’s nuthin’ but dreamin’ anyhow”…
My older brother had that album on 8-track tape, so I heard it a lot and liked it a lot.
As we all know, those 8-track tapes could play on a continuous loop.
What’s funny is, with all this sucking, we’ve only lost 2 games in the standings. Crawfish may not be ahuge help but it gets Villar out of the lineup.
Yes, that’s a good thing (sucking but not losing much ground). Disappointing how ineffective Villar became. I still think Schmitt will be a good player, just needs to learn and adapt. The HBP this year killed the team mostly with Thairo but also Haniger. Thairo coming back soon is very key, but that’s not happening before the trade deadline……
Dodgers lost.

Every team in the division lost — except the Rockies.
