Can We Beat The Worst Team In The League?
It has to this. The Giants need to beat the A’s, handily, to prove to Farhan that this flawed team he cobbled together is worthy of an add-on or two at the trade deadline next Tuesday. Speaking of “cobbling” something together, there’s no better time than now to see if Cobb can reset the direction of his season. If he can’t wipe out Oakland then I fear it’s all downhill for him the rest of this year. Same for SF.
giants probably lucky to be still in thick of it, as other WC teams also losing. AZ has lost 5 straight and blew 6-5 lead in 9th at home as Cards scored 5 off pen. Phils and Reds lost as well.
Pads lost 8-4 at home to Pirates. Lead off hitter Ha Seong Kim, hot of late, hit his 14th HR of season…a number that would lead Giants. Huh?
dunno what Z will be up to but as pointed out by others, almost everyone that wants to win is in market for pitching. That would include AZ SD and LA, plus Cincy in NL. Texas pitching got hammered over weekend by Dodgers, and lost to Stros 10-9 last night.
Oh, as this team has proven, no loss is unovercomaeable and no winning streak cannot be tempered by a let-down. Not sure why this team is so streaky but this is us.
We need pitching and Estrada back.
Just saw a tweet sending Bo Bichette to the Giants. I don’t trust that account though. Crazy idea. Also a tweet putting Alex Wood on the block. It’s that time of year.
Bichette’s one of their top hitters though he is in 0-19 slump. Still, seems unlikely. Wish SF would trade Wood anywhere. Complained about being yanked early then not starting. Once back in rotation had 2 awful starts. Away!
he’s also impossible to watch pitch. I hate his motion. I also can’t stand Harman’s waggly club bullshit before swinging. It’s awful.
Agreed. that follow through bugs me. Looks like he’s about to fall over.
Yeah, it’s time for Wood to go. Whining about things in baseball is not good. And, it certainly isn’t good for team moral.
Giants could dumpWood Stripling,Manaea,Disco are just throw ins if any team is desperate are delusional enough to add one in part of a deadline deal.Winn&Beck and even Whisenhut for a lefty could be easily better for now as the long relievers/ spot starter/openers..
Whisenhunt for a scrub reliever is a no-go.
Sabes had good luck with some under radar deadline moves. Bowker (and Joe Martinez) was traded for Javier Lopez, who had been released by 3 different teams before winding up with Pirates.
Nate the less than great (who hit 22 doubles/9 HRs .750 OPS part time in 2011) was dealt to Phils for Pence in 2012. giants were Pence’s 3rd team.
Nate was out of ML baseball after 2014.
Under radar moves to add some hitting/useful pen guys that don’t cost much can have impact going forward.
Ruf for Davis is a steal and a half.
Brock Purdy cleared to practice with “no restrictions” per Kyle Shanahan.
Seems early for “no restrictions”…
Well, they are gonna limit his throwing to 2 days in a row with a break.
There was some talk about Farhan being interested in adding a middle infielder. Any Flap thoughts on taking a gamble on Tim Anderson? He has under performed for the last season and half but that means they can’t be demanding high end prospects. Only due $14 mill next year with $1 mill buyout. Worth a gamble to me. Let Luciano progress in a full AAA season.
Steve Young has accepted a job at Menlo College as an assistant coach under John Paye and others (former 49er and Menlo College) to help coach girls flag football program…
John Paye’s sister Kate is lead assistant to Van Derveer at Stanford, and has been for long time.
At timeouts she’s the one w board in her hands drawing stuff up.
I think I read where his daughters go there also so it’s probably more like a fun thing for him to do. I wonder how competitive it will be. I know that girls softball is really competitive.
The gig is at Menlo School, private HS there off El Camino. They play b-ball etc. in private school league that is step down from WCAL of Mitty St. Francis SI SC Cathedral yada yada. Lot of state championships and D1 players for girls out that league, v-ball b-ball soccer softball… this sounds like good fun opp beyond field hockey once it gets going. Lacrosse still not big here.
I had 5-6 friends go there and none of them graduated cuz they got tossed for smoking pot.
Unc, girls b-ball won State before Pandemic, D II maybe. One of stars came through our youth group and got her pic in Chron. Playing ball at Yale now, nice family.

fwiw Verlander shutting out Yanks on 2 hits through 6.
Marlins and Phils both losing.
GMC is using “We Will Rock You.”
On a related note: the Giants are not rocking anyone lately.
There was a row of sizable granite boulders on a side path at Lego Land that played We Will Rock You when people walked by. At least it was there 25years ago. It startled little kids but parents laughed.
I have Schmitt at 11 for last 100…
2 hits in the last 3 games is a vast improvement.
Bases loaded no out.
Any guesses?
It’s a lead!
One whole run…
The multiple-run inning is still elusive.
Senor Warning Track strikes again…
Has anyone here ever had a SpeeDee oil change?
I have not.
No, but Meinekie fucked up my daughter’s car.

Missed it-did Unite the Bay protest thing come off at all? Saw guy with plaque or something in stands.
It was loud.
OK. One risp.
Might be the first one in a week.
Hey now! Doval hasn’t pitched in a week with this losing streak. Hope he hits the ground running
Victory!
Got em!
Ground running just fine for Doval striking out the side!
Yaz clutch RBI ,Cobb definitely pitches awesome at home compared to road, a much needed win to snap the losing streak ..Victory anyway is a good thing!!
Hey! A win!
Haven’t seen Clint in too long
Bases clearing 3 run double for Jay top 9 extends lead to 7-3 in LA.
Dogs pen guy Justin Bruihl got 1 out, walked 2 gave up single to Chapman before PH Danny Jansen drove ball over Chris Taylor’s head in LF.
Jays playing like little leaguers. Just gave up 3rd infield single and let 2 runs score on the last one to tie it up. Fuck
Not sure who there closer is but this one is sucking!
Scored 4 runs with only singles. Grr
Jays couldn’t use their closer tonight so they had to use Tomato Can Jones and he sweated a lot and was lousy.
Chapman flubbed a ball. Like the Dodgers need extra breaks.
3rd base coach challenges Betts with one out. Stupid.
There’s a reason why the Blue Jays never go anywhere.
How did they score 2 on an infield single. Brainfart by 1b?
Second baseman. The ball was deflected by the first baseman, 2b picked up the ball and didn’t look at Smith rounding third. He was looking at some other base. A stupid mistake.
The Blue Jays should just end their season now and go away.
Dodgers’ rookie gets on base 5 times tonight, including a walk-off HR. They’ve been doing this for at least 10 years now.
Has any team in major league history had as productive of a 10 year stretch of drafting? Like ever? It can’t all be skill. There has to be some sheer chance involved. It’s an insane hot streak. We’re just fortunate only the 1 World Series title in that stretch so far. They could have won a lot more.
We have Roberts to thank for that.
I wasn’t optimistic we would catch LA anyway but damn i hate that win.
The Jays did every stupid thing they could to lose that game at the end. Epic choke.
Pro players can choke. Like the Falcons blowing the 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl. It became clear the Falcons were just going to keep choking.
The Dodgers drafted Outman in the 7th round, out of Cal. St. Sacramento.
7th round, of course. Why not.
Our rookies have cooled off immensely. We need them to reignite somehow, and shake off the lingering ghost of Bowker who haunts all of our rookies for the past 10 years.
We need the help of Superman:
Say what?!
“The Giants are planning to call up shortstop Marco Luciano after just six games in Triple-A, sources told NBC Sports Bay Area. If he plays Wednesday night against the A’s, Luciano will become the second 21-year-old to debut this season, joining Luis Matos.”
Good!
I’m so sick of these guys getting babied for years.
Just bring em up.
Baseball is baseball…
River Cats are in New Mexico tonight.
Luciano hit an HR tonight. Maybe that seals the deal.
Sounds for sure:
“The SF Giants are making a major move to try and add some energy to their scuffling big-league offense. According to a report by Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Giants are calling up shortstop Marco Luciano (Giants #3 Prospect) from Triple-A Sacramento and will make his big-league debut on Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics.”
Well that was quick…as I reported, he seems ready physically to play short as I saw at AA in Harrisburg. He was more built physically than I had expected in the upper body and seems like legit SS. Fingers crossed his bay sticks in the big leagues. I think if Matos had not been given a shot and showed he is big league material, not sure they would have brought Luciano up…
“Might be first one in a week” MacDog at 8:57.
Mac w facts! per Baggs in TA:
“It was the Giants first hit with runners in scoring position in 29 at bats spread over 6 losses.”
Are they sending Schmitt down? Or Villar?
Gotta be Villar. Craw should be OK to return Friday, so see what happens then btw Wisely/Schmitt.
Well, that’ll be Wisely. Schmitt is getting a lot of rope. But he’s not even generating loud outs at this point.
whatinell happened to J. D.? Sure misses lot of swings.
“Susan Slusser
@susanslusser
I’ve had it confirmed that Marco Luciano will be called up today.
7:50 AM · Jul 26, 2023”
Anyone not named Joc or Wilbur is on the skids.
When he’s not striking out.
Villar is going down to Sac per KNBR…
Looks like the Giants are going to leadoff Luciano today i like it,get the kid as many AB’s and see better pitches instead of hitting 8-9..
Worked out well for Rikkert Faneyte…
Very cool. Can’t wait to see the kid.
Yes! Something to get excited about tonight!
Why not try Luciano?
I like trying out these young guys. Young is relative. He’s been in pro ball for 5 years or so. If he strikes out a lot, at least he will be a new guy whiffing it…
Luciano has been in pro ball for 5 years or so.
So, his being “young” is relative.
I’m totally for bringing him up. Let’s see where he is.
If he strikes out a ton, at least he’s a new face doing that…
I think he was 16 when we got him, but still 21 for a major leaguer seems young to me.
I’d imagine this will be the first time in a long while that we’ve had two 21 year olds start a game together. Assuming they both start.
OK, wordpress is screwing with me.
Maybe after watching Giants strain last night vs. AAA’s pitching, Z figures Luciano will feel right at home and pounding them tonight. Kinda funny about Giants inability to hit any ball lately as hard as Luciano did just last night.
Also gotta think Z didn’t like SS market for one reason or another. The Hot Kid and the savvy vet showing him the ropes script rest of the way. Schmitt backs up 3b and covers 2b for Estrada once he gets back. Wisely has hit well in minors and might do so at ML level by next season now that he has idea of what to expect.
They better not be bringing Luciano up to “Showcase” him before the trade deadline are I will be pissed 😡 off.Hey it’s the useless A’s they should of cleared a roster move and brought up Carson Wishenhut to start instead of malcontent broken Wood..
Highly doubtful.
Little league triple play.
It’s got to be the unis!
lulz. those are hideous.
That was the dumbest base running I’ve ever seen and to turn it into a Triple Play unbelievable! Players and coaches should be flogged in those hideous uni’s as well..
The Blue Jays bounced back from their epic meltdown last night and defeated the Dodgers today. They cut down on the stupidity.
Hey now. Just need the Cards to come through.
And they did 11-7. AZ needs pitching desperately. Like lot of teams, Dodgers included. Reds lost again to MIL 3-0.
NL is so bizarro. Braves and then everyone else. LA has only 2-3-4 more Ws than 6 other teams. Cubs have as many Ws as Padres (who lost again at home to Pirates) and 2 more than Mets.
And I thought it was Pete Rozelle who was so thrilled about parity.
Huh. The Angels pulled Ohtani off the trade block and will make the playoff push with him through the season.
Interesting. They must think they have a shot at backing up the Brinks truck.
