Trade Deadline Looming
The Giants players are holding up their end of the bargain. They just keep winning games. Farhan needs to get busy. He almost always disappoints me this time of year.

Seems Z disappoints most everyone in one way or another in offseason or at deadline. Team of non superstars he’s put together is quite a pleasant surprise to me.
Thinking about Loo’s ? as to most beloved Giant, it’s like they either got traded away or fell apart after a few good years for most of the guys I liked, as in say Ellis Burks Big Cat or Juan Uribe. Except for Mays/Marichal. Posey one of few I can think of who went out on his own terms.
Willie Mac has most stuffed named after him, a fearsome hitter with mellow easy to like personality among his peers, but had up and down career, both early and late.
Next 30 hours should be interesting. If we agree Harrison, Whisenhunt, Luciano and top draft picks from 2022 & 2023 are off limits, Farhan must be innovative in compiling package of players/prospects of interest to other GM’s in exchange for mid-level starting pitcher to fill DeSclafani void.
To me yesterday’s news on DeSclafani only further accentuates most glaring need: lack of starting pitching depth and tired bullpen. Back-to-back wins Sat & Sun can’t overshadow late inning blown saves by bullpen each day. Other teams already active on trade market including Jordan Montgomery to Rangers. What pitchers are still out there with value? I don’t think Verlander is viable option given his age and contract.
Giants also need right-handed bat with power but whose available? Kiki Hernandez might have been decent addition but shipped to Dodgers. Mets in seliing mode but is Canha an upgrade?
Interested in what others think. I believe options very limited but agree 2023 Giants keep finding ways to win close games late and deserve some upgrade to bolster stretch run.
how did they go 12-12 in July?
Either good AI or genius level pen management.
A 10-4 record in games decided by 1 and 2 runs, plus an extra-inning 8-4:win, part of a 3-0 record in extras.
Think Padres are 0-9 in extras. Winning few of those difference maker
Pitching. They are riding the horses hard and if they don’t get reinforcements there will be breakdowns. Be nice if they could try to stretch out Walker as he’s nails in his 2.66 innings of work. That is, if they stand pat. Which is a possibility.
Dan O’Dowd mentioned that the Reds should stand pat as their strength is their farm. Ride it. I’m sure Farhan is feeling the same way with the success of the call-ups.
He also said that the Giants might try to go after G Stanton with like 10 seconds left in the show.
Elon Musk Changes His Own Name to WTF (NYer)
Why the frown?
I’m guessing the trade value for Bart and Ramos has plummeted.
The Giants need to hang onto Harrison. I’m sure other teams are asking about him.
Well, OK if Harrison could get us Arenado.
If the Giants are willing to pick up Arenado’s salary. I don’t see this being like a Longoria salary. Arenado is more in his prime than Longo was.
Playing time for others would be tricky, though. Davis would have to do more DH-ing, which would cut into others’ ABs.
Bart and Ramos need a change of scenery, a new start with a new organization.
I love Arrenado, but our hole isn’t at 3rd, its the outfield and middle IF. get a starter and a MI. Schmidt to AAA. Not sure if any of the guys out there can help since we waited so long. Still miffed we didn’t get Scherzer!!!
mlb attendance is way up — just hit highest one week average in ten years. Click, pickoff rule, maybe even the bigger bases, all seem to be working. Owners are raking it in.
Clock.
I like all the changes. Didn’t think I would, but now that the players are used to it, shaving 30 minutes off every game has been terrific. never realized how much downtime between pitches!
Great pace; exciting baserunning. Bunting, even safety and suicide squeezes, seems to be making comeback, and without the shift I swear I saw a hit and run the other day.
I see that Conforto reached his vesting opti0n and can opt out next year. I wonder if Zaidi has that in mind also.
Wonder about Conforto. Not putting up great numbers so FA market might not be great. D rating not good either. Think he stays?
Might be tough for him to match the $18 mil or whatever next year, but if he gets hot to finish out the season, I’d imagine he’d test the FA waters. If Zaidi goes after a pitcher and a team wants to include a salary dump of an OFer, who knows, maybe Conforto being a question mark would come in to play.
I think ZMan will make a move, probably for an arm. With DeScal going down again, there’s no depending on the guy, meaning the starters room is nearly bare. Probably a minor arm. If I were the GM, I’d recognize this team is going nowhere even if it sneaks into the playoffs. I wouldn’t give up any minor leaguers who have the potential to be real contributors in the future for a pitcher who is a rental or on the 17th hole of his round…
Braves get Lopez from the Royals. Not that I wanted him. He’s a Mendoza line guy with no power.
and they DFAd Culberson, so that’s probably who we get.
lol. Jesus. Under the dumpster diving.
Yeah that would be the Giants way Loco bringing back retreads..I’m sure Matt Duffy is still on their radar as well..
I would still like to see a minor trade for Orioles Ramon Urias who can actually play the game, and can play 2B/SS/3B won a GG there and 1B that’s the Scurato player Z should target for infield help..
Pirates young ace Mitch Keller is showing interest to lots of teams and of course the Dogpile.
What will it take for Z to get involved in trades? Hell u start with Bart/Ramos and David Bednar so he can be reunited with his brother and another mid/low prospect are 2 .They need a SP to help out Webb&Cobb..
Until there’s a solid foundation at the MLB level, it’s less likely Zaidi makes any daring moves. I think he’d be content with a trial run of the existing roster in September. As others have pointed out, adding one B grade player isn’t going to increase their chances of getting into or through the playoffs very much. They’ll have to get extremely lucky one way or the other to advance far in the playoffs. I’ll be intrigued however it plays out.
Thairo and maybe Haniger will be back. I bet Z goes after pitching only and perhaps not rentals.
Yeah, I think the not a rental aspect might be key for him to give up any high potential assets.
One decent starter would do worlds to get them through the playoffs. As we proved in 2014 with Mad Bum and little else.
Vogey, Hudson, Timmy, and Cain were all flavors of crap.
Peavey had his moments, but with Cobb-Webb and one more guy, we would be good enough. We just beat one of the hardest hitting teams in the league with a cobbled together staff of rookies and jounreymen.
Cobb-Webb. The spider twins?
October 1, 2014, as I put money down on WS tickets, I warned my son we had one SP and one OF. Iwas right. Gregor’s OPS in the PS barely topped .500. Hunter’s was just .100 more until the WS, when he went 1.167. Can such an imbalanced team can go as far these days? Doubt it.
I do like that in 2010 Bochy worked around Sanchez to get past Philly. It was essentially a bullpen game that helped save that series. Of course 3 good starters improves your chances, but the rest of this team just isn’t that strong. They’ll need several great hands in a row.
Yes. MadBum caught a great opportunity, getting to pitch behind Lincecum and Cain that PS.
Good Baggarly piece in tA today about Beck, whom Z picked up in that prestidigitational Melancon trade with Atl.
Just read that now. Stripling throws a few decent games, and all of a sudden he’s the team spokesman.
But he’s so articulate.
I would make Harrison totally off-limits. I don’t care who’s involved. He’s still a gamble but he just might be our next Madbum and that’s worth more than anyone available imo. Pitching is what wins championships.
Thairo comes back and this moribund offense gets a jolt.
Luciano looks like he has the tools to be the real deal. I think they should just let him play up at SF. Problem is he doesn’t play any other position but SS, so unless they plan on having Craw no longer be the regular guy, I’m not sure how Luciano stays up for any length of time unless he hits the cover off the ball…
I saw something about him taking grounders at 2B. Think it was a chronicle headline. I refuse to fork over money to get behind that rag’s paywall.
I saw it too in a Pav tweet last week.
A bargain at $0.99 a month. Getting the Athletic for that same price.
I hope your right about Estrada, but for a full month before he got hurt he was around Crawford level:(
He’s got some pop, that helps…
Don’t forget Luis Gonzalez has been at Sac the last week on a rehab assignment.
3-6 w 2 doubles last game. Which Sac lost 17-16 at Albuquerque. 8 HRs combined, 35 hits.
Ramos had 3 hits as well. such a hitters league though. I think Tyler Fitzgerald has OPS of .845 but is average to below average hitter per OPS+ or wRC+.
Two negative WAR stiffs from Seattle? Thairo and Haniger promptly should displace them. Maybe the trade is for Disco on a stretcher.
Pollock? This is the RH power hitter? Mathias has played every position other than P and C in his 3 seasons.
lqtm
he’s hitting .173 this season. lol. He’ll fit in seamlessly
For you, DJ.
Does this mean we are trading Joc back to the Braves?
This trade is just for short term depth. The kid will bounce back and forth from Sactown as needed. We still haven’t heard how bad Yaz’s new hamstring problem is. Have we?
The ‘kid’ is 28. Does he still have any?
Actually he’ll be 29 in two days.
AJ Pollack….puh-lease. Why bother??? What will I order garçon? One dumpster dive please…
Teoscar at least makes way more sense…
Yaz to the 10 day IR.
Brebbia’s done for the season it seems.
Gabe Kapler on Pollock: “I’m really happy to have him. This is a move that suggests we think there’s more in the tank for A.J.”
That’s the weirdest endorsement possible. Kapler doesn’t expect Jack shit out of Pollock. He can’t even force himself to “suggest” otherwise. Hilarious. Mariners must’ve demanded that it was Mathias and Pollock or no Mathias. So the price will be cash or ptbnl AND a 26 man roster spot.
Mathias is probably gonna get sent to AAA
He did. Pollock takes the roster spot. My notio is that the Mariners wanted to jettison Pollock to free a roster spot and the Giants had to agree to clog a spot with him — for the time being.
Mathias is back up back up, idling in Sac.
Sewald to D’backs as closer, Canha to Brewers, Candelario to Cubs, Civale to Rays. And Giants trade for Pollock and minor leaguer?!? Farhan has 20 hours to make substantive contribution to current roster. Not sure who’s left on trade market with any real value.
Pollack??? Fucking sorry ass trade is all can type.
Just think how inspired he’ll be to stick it to his old team this week.
“Glad to Be Unhappy” seems apropos, one of Eric Dolphy’s flute tunes from Outward Bound, w Freddie Hubbard Jaki Byard Roy Haynes
Out to Lunch with Tony on drums is one of my all time favorites.
Pollock has hit lefties well his entire career, including last year. Guess they’re hoping for a Ruf like revival splitting time with Sabol. Happy, Happy, Birthday, Gabe!
Asked about Pollock, Kuip says he’s a big leaguer and any big leaguer makes you better. Wtf. Amazing bs. No one wants Pollock. Otoh, if he hits some bombs …. Cody Ross, Mike Morse, The Machine.
as i said in the lead, this is Farhan’s time of year to disappoint me.
and he has a few hours left
Just getting some cash the Mariners win this move..
Gawd Farhan will never get out of his dumpster diving ways.
How’s this stupid ass move improve the team at all?

that line up sucks balls. And did I miss something? Did we just sign Pollock?
Flavor was right. Pollock and Bart won’t cut it.
Not bad at all SOAD.
Here’s another nice one…

Gonna be fun watching the Mets crash and burn…
Wow. Sub in baily and he might be right on! I’d hope for Davis over Schmidt too!
Matos has about 130 ABs and one HR so far.
I’m far from dazzled…
No Luciano in the starting lineup is a bummer.
The Cards announced they have officially closed the door on trading Arenado.
The famous Mr. Ed.
Wilmet!
I got 6 on your grid game, is that good?
I got six once. But the entire right column was easy.
Sometimes it is – sometimes it isn’t.
It’s so much fun watching Mr.Ed crushing the ball right now!!
Pollock? I guess the Giants just wanted a “Few good Men”
We want him on that wall!
We need him on that wall!
I’m a big Kevin Pollak fan. He’s a very good actor, but also very good at stand-up comedy.
Pollock is on the IL. They may not even sew his name on s jersey.
well, it’s not like we gave anything up for him
Except hope…
We traded for a guy already hurt?
Don’t think I’ve ever seen a team in a race make additions to make them worse?
It all started with Wood’s leadoff walk to the 9 hitter
He’s averaging a walk every two innings. It’s why he hasn’t been very good this year.
Here’s a beat writer still in college. I like his approach.
Gimmick Dude did A-OK.
Doval’s slider when it’s right like tonight is unhittable thing of beauty
Doval was lights-out!
Help from the HP ump!!!
Ha the unhittable slider that’s also uncatchable.
Matos gets a walk!
YES!
WP!
Kuip wrong again…
yeah noticed that a lot lately like Kat said.
How don’t you steal here??
Kuip gets to hyped up as usual HIGH DRIVE that just makes the warning track..
I’m sitting at the Club Level and that ball was crushed.
Dang Late Night crushed that just wrong part of the yard.
Seen this comment elsewhere about Giants–the vet bats are gonna have to carry the team. Well tonight 2-20 but at least Slater got Wilmet to the plate.
Mr.ED time I love it..
Mariners 1-0 in the cash considerations era.
Taylor doesn’t have a strikeout pitch.
Terrible AB from Joc.
Tracking on cbs site, the pitcher never threw any fastball harder than 93. Yet Joc took 2 for strikes (to finish off 0-5 night), and both Sabol and Bailey did too.
It’s not like we needed Luciano in the lineup or anything.
0-9 with RISP. Augh
A fitting end to July.
This offense could use some Viagra…
I guess our late inning magic wasn’t with us tonight
