A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

When You’re The Openest

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 3, 2023

My main main Scott Alexander getting the start tonight. Open that shit up. Wide. I’m all in on The Opener now since I have to be.

Just checked the relief pitcher appearance leaders. The Reds have 4 guys in the top 3 somehow. That’s impressive. We have 2 in the top 3. Amazingly, Alexander, who seems to pitch multiple times a day, isn’t in the top 10.

Webb went 7 with 2 guys after him, Cobb went 6 in his start. Plenty of guys pitching very well who are rested up to fall in behind the others.
Love the D but Schmitt has to go. Last swing he took was just awful, chasing pitch far outside zone. Cannot survive vs. ML pitching as long as he continues to do that. Luciano better option.

would you have traded Schmitt for Flaharty?

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 3, 2023 at 8:18 am

No. Not in on Flaherty, a headcase and a 2 month rental. Pass. Schmitt like some of the others needs to reset in Sac and get his head straight. Plus defender and versatile.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2023 at 8:04 am

Balt traded their 16th and 18th rated prospects. No need to trade Schmitt. Schmitt needs to go back down and figure shit out. He’s 23 and stands to be a starter for a long time if he can hit. Not worth it for a 2 month rental.

Day baseball on sunny summer day in SF, with temps in high 60s lol. Many parts of the country that’s today’s low temp. Just a different place to play ball, always has been. Afternoon games at Stick on 1b side once sun shifts, yeow. Anyone who lived there like Lefty O’Doul knew about wind too before yard ever got built.

There not getting any offense out of 2B since Estrada’s been out, hope he’s back real soon.Diaz&Wisely although good with the glove, both just can’t hit a lick.Good for the kid Diaz to break his futility with Kokomo Joe (what both 1-16?) but even that hit would of been a routine out to 2nd if the infield wasn’t drawn in, but I’ll take it and his 1st ML RBI as well..

  6. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 3, 2023 at 8:25 am

Giants offense much more an issue in july swoon. BA, slash numbers 11-12 NL across board, runs and HRs 8th, K’s and triples 14-15, and they don’t steal many bases either.
Pitching top 3 in league for runs ERA yada yada. They strike hitters out and don’t walk them either. High groundball rate with good D behind them. It’s fine!

  7. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 3, 2023 at 8:28 am

Slush said Brandons were texting about them each going yard Tuesday and Belt said something about teaming up for Brandon cycle. Craw’s response was “who’s gettting the triple?”

  8. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 3, 2023 at 8:39 am

Slumps from Davis Wade Jr Conforto and others in July hopefully now past. Resurgence (brief as it may be) from Craw plus any help they get from Estrada Yaz Haniger would be better than chump hitters like DeJong that got moved at deadline.

I think calling Schmitt a plus defender is diplomatic understatement. He also has developed versatility. I wonder if he’ll see the kind of pitching he needs to adjust to in Sac. Agreed, we don’t need another hole in the LU. But if the choice comes down to Diaz (or unWisely) and Schmitt, I’d keep Schmitt as the backup IF when Thairo returns. Crawford’s due for more leg problems. Luciano redux.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2023 at 12:32 pm

Schmitt is matt Williams redux. If he’s not playing all the time here he should be full-time in Sacto.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 3, 2023 at 12:59 pm

Schmitt doesn’t have Williams true power. He’ll need to use all fields etc. Game has changed in 35 years too.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 3, 2023 at 3:09 pm

They never showed us a replay to see if he was watching for the HR instead of sprinting out of the box. It seems 99% of the time, the player always watches for the HR before sprinting.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 3, 2023 at 3:14 pm

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 3, 2023 at 3:25 pm

the 3B coach saw how cleanly Palooka played the ball and how quickly and smoothly he coiled around to throw. And that throw was on the money. And I don’t think anyone would’ve assumed that low LD screamer would be a HR.

Good call on Padres-Dodgers series. Padres starting to show life.

Starting Monday thru Labor Day, Giants play 7 consecutive series against teams with winning records including 6 games with Braves, 3 with Rangers and 3 with Rays. Also throw in Phils, Reds and Angels. Then add Padres at back end who could be north of .500 by Sept.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 3, 2023 at 5:00 pm

A couple weeks back, I predicted the Padres would be over 500 pretty soon. I actually hope the Dodgers bury them, although I doubt that’ll happen. The Pads are a bigger problem for the Giants’ WC hopes than the DBs and Miami.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 3, 2023 at 5:39 pm

i think you also predicted the O’s were frauds.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 3, 2023 at 5:58 pm

I think I expressed skepticism because the W-L was way better than their run differential at the time. Like the Marlins and DBs. I hardly ever make predictions, so I’m not sure what you’re trying to call out here. You think the Padres are obviously losers this year?

      • James's avatar James said, on August 3, 2023 at 6:12 pm

Here’s the one thing I could find that I posted about the Orioles during the series in SF:

“SF 4th in ERA, 6th in OPS. If that’s still true by the end of the year, and Baltimore doesn’t improve its own underlying stats, they won’t be better than us.”

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 3, 2023 at 6:22 pm

well, that prediction is looking quite wrong isn’t it…..

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 3, 2023 at 6:23 pm

and btw any idiot could predict the Padres will be better than their current record. It’s astounding their record is so bad as it is. GM or Manager should probably get fired.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 3, 2023 at 6:32 pm

The Orioles comment wasn’t a prediction. I only brought up the Padres in the context of the other comments. You’re right, it wasn’t terribly insightful since they’ve had a positive run differential most of the season, but there hasn’t been much attention paid to the Pads until now.

Great win. Love all you guys, but not trading for Flaherty was nuts. No need for Schmidt in the deal. We would have sent lower tier guys. If he pitched for a month and got hurt then that would have been awesome! I love the openers doing so well, but what will you be saying if the bullpen arms flame out? Of course i hope that doesn’t happen, but chances are way less if a good starter got 5-6 starts and saved 36 innings from those guys so they would be fresh in Oct when the will literally pitch in every single game for 4-5 weeks!

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 3, 2023 at 6:21 pm

i know it could have been done for less than Schmitt. But I still would have done it.

    Player B: 2023 ERA before today 2.94 WHIP 1.09 BA against .226 OPS .635

    A is J Flaherty, B is T Beck.
Beck’s line today 4 innings 0 runs 0 BBs 2 hits 3 Ks. I’ll take him as fill in behind opener. Giants record is 15-5 in opener games. Z and Kap have guys to make this work, 75% of time, and Beck is one of them. Flaherty winning 75% of his games with Giants offense behind him?

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 3, 2023 at 6:20 pm

of course you’ll take him, he’s a Giant. Those are the only guys you ever want. Only someone with blinders can’t see the upside of Flarhaty over Beck (who I really like btw)

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 3, 2023 at 6:41 pm

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 3, 2023 at 6:47 pm

Here are Flaherty’s 2023 game logs:

      https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=flaheja01&t=p&year=2023

He’s had a few other good games like his start today, and the 9 runs in 2 innings did serious damage to his numbers overall. Still, his record doesn’t suggest that he’s going to be the winning difference in a playoff series.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 3, 2023 at 6:34 pm

what’s always hilarious to me about you is that you tout stats to only suit your take. When it came to Pollock you were like “oh this guy hits lefty’s just not this year” suggesting this was some lightning in the bottle bullshit. But with Flarhety who was dominant in 2019 and 2021 you just want to look at this year. Classic. The guy was injured. He’s back now. He’s 27. It was fucking stupid to not trade some low level bullshit for him and it’s even stupider that you don’t get that.

Um “back” yes. As good as earlier, definitely not; he’s nothing like 2019–gives up more hits and walks and Ks less guys.
Last 3 starts before today he gave up 10 runs and 4 HRs in 17 innings. 2 good starts before that and 2 good years in last 5.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 3, 2023 at 7:03 pm

i know what his stats are. Continue to clutch your giants players close my man, don’t lose even one of them! Fucking Flarherty is going to help the O’s this year (as he did today he was throwing 96-97 most of the game) and you guys will be beating off to fucking Tristan Beck. Again, a guy i like. But we already had him. We needed more and Farhan did nothing but his typical Boardroom speak that too many Flappers got tricked by. It’s the fucking same old shit.

AZ had miserable July, going 8-16 and Giants have only added to their woes. But they are still a good hitting team. Giants will see them in AZ mid September.
5th NL for runs, 6 BA 5th OPS 2nd Doubles #1 triples 2nd SBs. Giants held them to 9 runs in 4 games. After holding down good hitting Red Sox team before that. Pitching doing the job.

I guess we disagree about the “winning nothing” part. World Series championships? No championships yet describes a high percentage of the current GMs and team presidents. (Although Zaidi did help build the Dodger team that won it in ‘20.)
It even took the great Sabien about 13 or 14 years to get that first one in ‘10.
