Bad Meets Bad
Tonight is an exercise in what happens when a lesser futility faces off against a greater futility. Who wins? Stripless is terrible but he’s not as bad as the A’s. Is he? We shall soon find out.

Stripling has actually been improving. I have hope he’s gonna be OK.
Oh I think Stripling has found his groove back like Stella and should easily handle the Swingless A’s in Sell Now Stadium 🏟️.He’s the #3 guy in the revolving rotation/Openers scenario imo.Good are bad he can get u 6 innings more so then Wood,Disco.but of course not as much as Flaherty would have but why would they want a young pitcher(27) with bulldog in his DNA that would of gotten u that in most every start for next to chump change in prospect returns..
A’s are 30-80, one of only 3 teams to have lost that many at this point since 1960. Probably not as bad as 62 Mets but in same convo.
A’s largest crowd last year, 40K, was the first Giants game at the E Coli. Should surpass that today. It’ll look and sound a lot like a summer game in any other mlb park. The stadium staff have always been warm and friendly when I show up in a Giants hat. Everyone knows this is payday.
Pac-12 conference is apparently dead. The only ones left are Cal, Stanford, Oregon State, Wash State. No idea where they are going to go. Looks like they’ll have to join a “lesser” conference to keep some semblance of a competitive sports footprint. Their football teams will probably be hemorraghing their best players in the portal after this season. How are UWash and Oregon going to be in the Big 10. Oregon vs. Rutgers in NJ? Makes no sense. I don’t think this new paradigm will last long. The logistics make no sense, and are incompatible with athletes actually being real students in the non-football sports. Playing 6 games vs Funkyass State, how is Cal going to put enough butts in seats at Strawberry Canyon to help payoff the $250+ million stadium rehab cost? …
Former commish L Scott doomed the league and new guy Klivakoff couldn’t save it. It’s all about TV $$, and even if the newer teams in big 20 (and those now in big 12+) get less dough it’s still significant guaranteed upgrade over what they were gonna get. Football is always the dominant deciding factor, let the other sports be damned. Can’t imagine long basketball road trips back East for SC/UCLA and others to Penn State and Rutgers.
Would be kinda funny if Stanford wound up in Mtn. West (cool league actually) and got to renew rivalry with San Jose State they abandoned years ago.
It’a a sad day for West Coast collage football. Money has won over 100+ year institutions. If I was any of the final four I would try to bring in teams to start a West Coast independent league. If we get a total of 8 maybe in time we could get back to another Pac 8. I still have my dad’s old scrap book with all of the Pac 8 team patches from the 30’s.
Wow very cool. It’s also possibility I guess the Big 10 does take rest of West Coast and just realigns that way and schools take less $$ as best deal they can get.
Is the over under on tonight’s game 2? LOL!
Not one to want to restoke flames but Flaherty being hurt isn’t the point. he is a human STARTER. A very good one a lot of the time. I never thought he was a cy young candidate. That said, my point was he could be had for little (as was Lorenzan and a few others). I LOVE beck, as I stated earlier.
I believe we are a playoff team. If that happens lets remember how the playoffs work. Webb, Cobb, and what? back to back openers? The high leverage guys both Rogers and Doval will almost certainly pitch in games 1 and 2. Empty the bullpen 2 games in a row in games 3 &4. . High pressure for a bunch of relievers. Since our offense is bad (and also got no help) the chances of an explosion that give Rogers’ and Doval a night off seem very remote.
A legit game 3 starter (of which Flaherty is ) means the 5-6 guys used before the end 3 studs get a night off they will desperately need to ramp up again. But now we blew that.
By some chance it works out, they go in to a 7 game series and do that same thing again. And again. We get crazy lucky and it works they do it again, again, and again in the WS.
This strategy is NUTS!!!
well remember there are set days off for travel, so it is possible to get by with fewer aces. Bochy did this starting guys like Hudson. Look what happened with J Sanchez too.
There is still big benefit to having quality guy like Walker open the game vs. the opponents best hitters and see how long he can go as opposed to back end of rotation SP like Wood.
As for Flaherty, he’s a 4.50 ERA/4.20 FIP guy who gives up lot of hits walks, with high BA against. For team like Orioles, with 8-9th best AL rankings for runs hits BBs ERA etc. given up, he’s an upgrade. He has couple good outings then gets hammered. His 3 games before last one he gave up 10 runs in 17 innings and 4 bombs. In other words, Stripling Manaea Wood numbers.
Agree mostly with everything you said Willie, except this is a new pitching era, so Boch doesn’t exactly apply. Pitching has become so specialized that 2010 through 2014 is now ancient history in my opinion . . . but I digress. Basically, every potential freaking playoff team is dealing with these types of trade offs, e.g., see the Bums. Thus this “opener” bullshit, which in today’s game is an absolute necessity. Just reviewed yesterday’s thread and Sutton is a perfect example. Agree with Loo he was a “compiler” back in the day . . . Fast forward today, he would be an “ALL WORLD STUD” in today’s game.
More important, whom amongst us even thought the Giants would be talking playoffs after the All Star break??? I think no one. To me this is all gravy.
Still think opener/pen games is wave of future for everyone even in playoffs, including LA as you say. Too hard to keep SPs healthy despite lighter workloads. Webb hoping to get 200 innings lol.
Look what happened to Padres last night–Darvish leaves after 7 ahead 3-2, and SD loses 10-5 because pen guys self destructed. who is more important these days?
Happy birthday to Gary Beban turns 77 ..
Local kid that was born in SF and played HS football at Sequoia before going to UCLA and winning the Heisman trophy in 68 .Still hard to figure that one out beating out RB USC OJ Simpson( 2nd)and Purdue’s RB Leroy Keyes (3rd) both were more dominating..
Todays immaculate grid seemed unusually easy.
It was the easiest one that I’ve seen.
One problem I have is sometimes typing something in the wrong box. Gotta be careful with that.
The most fun part for me is trying to keep down that rarity score and not just take the super obvious guy. I assume that other people’s scores are skewed by the cheaters…
My guess for Silver Slugger and HOF would have delighted you.
My rarity score today was 61, but if that’s any good it’s just a fluke.
Pretty sure it’s outstanding…
Three Giants added only 18% and one is Mays. Wtf?
I think a younger crowd plays it…
Actually 18.1% — 1% Posey, .1% Will Clark. Looks like more than age at work to me.
Nightmare breakdown at the wire in Saratoga Stakes race…
Maple Leaf Mel about to win easily for owner Bill Parcells broke down right before the wire.
The jockey (Rosario) walked off with minor lacerations.
The horse had to be euthanized.
Horrendous as it gets…
yeah i didn’t see it but TBO texted me as soon as it happened. Said it was the worst he’s ever seen. Did you see Ruffian go down?
Ruffian never went down. She was helped off in the ambulance and somewhat mercifully it happened on the backstretch, far from the crowd. There were no big screens then so if you were there (I wasn’t) you really needed binoculars. Of course, it was nationally televised.
The worst ever by far was Go For Wand and I strongly advise against seeing the video.
You won’t sleep for a month…
1 L. Wade (L) 1B
2 T. Estrada (R) 2B
3 W. Flores (R) DH
4 J. Pederson (L) LF
5 J. Davis (R) 3B
6 M. Conforto (L) RF
7 P. Bailey (S) C
8 B. Crawford (L) SS
9 L. Matos (R) CF
thanks Loo. Nice to see Estrada back. Diaz sent down per Pavs.
Had to look this up, but per lexluth7 on MCC, Dansby Swanson is having much the best season of any of the SS that hit big FA market, slightly better than his last year with Braves.
Carlos Correa is hitting .220, and like Trea Turner (hitting .236) has OPS below .700. Xander B got off to great start but is still 100 points of OPS below what he was doing for BoSox.
If you think fans are mad at Z for not landing anyone in superstar FA market, suppose Giants owed one of above $25 mil+ for next 5-10 years?
yes we appeared to have dodged some bullets there.
We dodged some bunker buster bombs there
Let’s go, Giants!

Drives me nuts when Joc gets called out on a worse pitch just called a ball for Stripmine.
My son says the staffer at the gate didn’t bother to scan their tickets. Just happily waved them in. The a’s don’t want to know the gate.
Place pretty full?
Crowd shot looks pretty good.
Yeah it’ll be by far their biggest crowd of the year. Chant next inning.
Kid sent a pic from the big bar up above LF and the seats below were all full.
Hard to believe the Pac-12 is dead when it was not too long ago Stanfoo was at the top of the heap, and so was Oregon. Somebody fucked up hard.
Giants gave Oakland fans a couple of thrills that inning. Craw. And Matos!
Fucking pathetic. Blackburn, Pfaadt, Cecconi, Nelson, the list of shitty pitchers keeps growing.
The A’s never had the lead a single time in their three games vs. the Dodgers.
Consistently weak. Too consistent. Has to change. There are a few good hitters in the LU. No reason to get excited.
I guess the definition of cold is being shut out by the A’s.
Hope we can smoke the pen.
Hope I was wrong on the over under of 2. Lets go Giants!!
Unsurprisingly, the As have no shutouts this year.
AJ Palooka will blast a PH HR.
Derp.
Have we hit one ball hard?
Not much since Wade Jr loud foul in first.
If there’s a game that can help Kapler find his inner Lasorda, this one might be it.
This approach of not swinging at anything is incredible.
Oh Wilmer.
Thairo wants to play!
Way to read that and hustle into 3b.
Estrada!! Nice job.
Can we get a sac fly?
Bellinger was named NL Player of the Month for July.
Not Mr. Ed…
Just the knock now.
Shea said 37,550 at yard today.
Sheas an asshole and an idiot. He’s probably going on the bad official gate even tho his new gig is to diss Fisher. Last year the first giants game at the E. coli was 40K. It’s gotta be more today. They opened up a couple of extra sections becz of the demand. The goddamned soccer drums and horns suck.
walker is one of my favorite pitchers of all time. 31st round pick. Probably will end up leading the team in starts. Shows up at any time in any game. Has filthy stuff. Love.
Walker laid a turd right up there 0-2.
He did it again.
0-2 to the walk.
of course there’s love and there’s hate. It’s a fine line.
The Persuaders say it’s “thin”….
The Pretenders say it’s a bitter line.
Ruiz’ first name makes me think of the East River here…
Walker all over the place.
Well, Walker having a moment today.
Foul ball? Hilarious.
Holy shit! Call of the day! It missed the bat by 5″. Walker better straighten his shit now.
that was bad.
Can we get a run or two?
There’s gotta be a way to get Luciano in the lineup.
embarassing.
Losing to a AAA team is embarrassing.
Speaking of AAA, the River Cats are on some local broadcasts in the area.
Harrison the starting pitcher.
He starts the game with four straight walks.
Good grief.
With the help of a doubleplay, he only gives up one run in the inning.
Luciano is starting at second base.
The River Cats TV broadcasting team has three people tonight. I don’t know who the play by play person is. The two analysts are Steve Sax and…..wait for it……Amy Gutierrez! 🙂
The play by play guy might be a dude named Zack Bayrouty.
He does alright.
she’s been there all year. I figure some sort of mediated settlement over the Giants network termination of her contract led to that weird gig. I’ve suffered Sax on those broadcasts for years now. He’s right where he belongs.
It’s a zero sum game for the Giants.
The Blackburns just consistently happen to have their best stuff against the Giants.
If they split the four games does the bay bridge trophy get dumped in the bay? It is the last season of this shit, right?
No. Sorry. Four games next year, too. I was misinformed.
Wild story:
“On Wednesday, the Yankees announced that German voluntarily entered inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse and will focus on his health and well-being for as long as he needs to be away from the club. Brian Cashman told reporters that German wouldn’t pitch again for the 2023 season.
These consequences come after a startling report from the Wall Street Journal that details German’s clubhouse meltdown on Tuesday. According to the WSJ, German appeared to be intoxicated when he entered the clubhouse ahead of the Rays game and “grew belligerent” in heated confrontations with his teammates and Aaron Boone.
At one point, German flipped over a couch and smashed a TV. He was temporarily held in a sauna to sweat out the alcohol, and he ended up in Yankee stadium’s team nap room — under the watchful eye of security — while his teammates prepared for the game.”
Well, who hasn’t shown up for work a bit buzzed?
Anyone watching the pods bums game? Horrible LA mistakes. I know the standings. But it’s funny.
A wonderful 8th inning tonight!
Yeah. The pickoff throw was funny. So were run scoring knocks. Padres fans still showing up and selling yard out.
That nice catch by Matos is at least the 2nd time I recall seeing him do an absolute face plant into the wall. He has an interesting way of attacking balls at the wall. I just hope he doesn’t pull a Bump Bailey one day…
