Pathetic
Losing to The A’s. No loss is greater. Our offense continues to be the worst in the league. Not really sure where you go when you’re losing to the worst and you are the worst at something.

Winning 3 of 4 from AZ with little offense was lucky fortune and expecting more than just a split of 2 games in Oaktown is probably what we should have expected. But that means have to take care of business today…
Clarification…expecting more than a split was not expected…
And boy what an impact Pollock has made….
you can only win at a shell game for so long. At some point, if these guys continue to not hit, the losses are going to come in bunches.
Well, Yaz, Wade, Estrada, now Haniger and Conforto can’t stay on the field for any length of time.
6 walks yesterday?
After Padres-Dodgers, Fox channel FS1 ran hour long show “Finding Home: Journey to MLB” about group of young ballplayers from DR trying to make their way up through the Cubs system. Saw about half of hour long show and it was fantastic look at Cubs Academy, minor league life in America etc.
Willson Contreras was in it, so was former ML Victor Martinez.
All 30 teams have Academys set up in DR now. Lot of the dialogue was in Spanish of course but translated on screen. And of course problems in Venezuela and elsewhere from far away families of the players came up.
Finally.
The more I read about the demise of the Pac-12, the more sad it gets. Looks unlikely after 2024 there will ever be again in the foreseeable future a big time football game at Cal. I remember the 1991 game at Memorial Stadium vs UW. This was the Husky team that eventually went 12-0 and won the coaches poll for national champion — arguably the best Husky football team ever. We sat on the 30 yd line on the Bay side about 30 rows up. Lincoln Kennedy looked like a damn giant of a mauler. Cal played the best game I ever saw a Cal team play — losing 24-17 to an all-time college squad. That Cal team went 10-2, smoked ‘SC at Cal (lost inexplicably to Stanfoo), then beat Clemson in the Citrus Bowl. Pawlaski, Sean Dawkins and Russel White were the stars. Ol’ Memorial Stadium was SRO at 75K and rockin’ on a beautiful fall afternoon in Strawberry Canyon. After the game, we went down to Shattuck Ave and had beers and grub in a bar loaded with Cal and Husky fans together talking and laughing and just enjoying the hell out of what we just saw. Even though we lost, I’ll never forget that afternoon…
The gradual fade in the Cal football program since Aaron Rogers apogee and then Tedford left has resulted in a losing résumé that just won’t sell to the new reality of TV. The horrendous record of the men’s basketball program the last decade or so is also a big part in Cal being outside looking in for the league re-alignment craze. Maybe we Bears were whistling past the graveyard as the big programs spiraled into Tier2 level talent and mediocrity. It looks like best case scenario if Cal can join up with a mish mash new Mountain West or something like that, with the attendant huge drop in TV contract funding. What are the real student athletes going to do in the low-to-no money producing programs – many many sports may be just jettisoned. The beautiful Memorial Stadium retro-fit and upgrade project still has hundreds of millions in debt yet unpaid, I believe. Disastrous situation for Cal sports is not overstated. Stanford not far behind. I’ve seen articles about it going independent in football, but that seems a pipe-dream, maybe OK for other sports. BF may have some info on that. I’ve also seen talk of Cal and Stanfoo joining a West Coast wing of Ivy League, but that seems non-sensical. Stanfoo sports a massive endowment Cal does not have, but who knows if that’s even in the Cards there for spending some of it on sports. Stanfoo fans have supported their squad re: total butts in seats in the recent past just below Cal (though higher % of capacity) at the low end of the Pac-12, but with far better teams. Bay Area college sports has always taken a back seat to pro sports, but now it’s going to not even be in the car…
As Jenkins said in Chron today, this final season of Pac 12 should be good one. Deion’s first season FBS, SC UW Oregon Utes lead balanced league.
Cal and Stanford both have new coaches that should give different look to programs.
Deion hiring was a great call by Colorado.
Maybe they saw this coming.
Their program has been in free fall, worse than Cal or Stanfoo. Yet, here they are now still in the big time conference, solely because of the star power of their coach and the promise he brings. We’ll see how long he stays at Boulder…
There are many UCB faculty who will be overjoyed at the prospect of rethinking the place of sports on campus. They better hope the fundraising machine achieves a level of efficiency comparable to the rugby team.
Woman I know had Kevin Johnson in a section she TAd. She had no idea who he was. She failed him. Admin changed the grade. She was too preoccupied with her own work to protest more than a couple of bureaucratic levels above. Appropriately, I suppose, she got pissed off when I laughed at the persistence of her outrage. She had a point. Fucking “well educated” mayor of Sacramento.
UC has lost money on intercollegiate athletics for a long time, though book juggling often made it look like a wash. The baseball program shut down completely a few years back, then sputtered back fueled by donations. (Kid my son played little league with, drafted as a pitcher by Boston out of HS, committed to Berkeley and had to scramble for a walk-on at UCLA. Career never blossomed.) years back the univ took on a bunch of the memorial stadium debt directly, knowing revenue wouldn’t come close.

Pac 12 demise sad. Super conferences the death of the college game as we know it…
It really makes me sick.
My son says that he and all other fans near him passed through security yesterday and then entered the park while the ticket scanners stood off to the side, registering no one. the A’s are a messed up organization.
Still waiting for AJ’s first bomb.
Happy Birthday to Wilmer “Mr.ED” Flores the only guy with a bat that has helped keep the Giants in this race the last 2 months! Without his clutch AB’s in July they would have had many more losses.Clutch BP work didn’t hurt as well to hold up a floundering offense.. Their hitting coaches don’t seem to be working since that one guy moved on Viele? I wish Chili Davis would be hired he’s a hell of a hitting coach even JD Davis highly credits Chili for his dedicated work helping him with the Mets.
Donnie Ecker is the guy the Rangers hired away from SF prior to 2021 and was w Reds before that.
Interesting bio. Used to coach baseball locally at Los Altos HS, played for Long Beach State.
Just me but with all the coaches Giants have under Kap, must be collaborative effort w Viele.
I think if you went the tired “fire the hitting coach” route, might not just be one guy.
I give Ecker the credit for getting the vets to produce like they did in 21. The Giants not dumping mini me and promoting Ecker to the bench coach and offensive coordinator position as Texas did, was a huge mistake IMO.
Why’s game starting late? MLB TV just says “delay “
Mice ate through stadium electrical wires?
Giants dugout flooded with sewer water.
That’s the E Coli. No reason to shut down.
Medina thinks: “I’ve got a nice hard breaking slider, 97 on the fastball. Why am I the unlucky one to give up a run to this sorry ass line up?”
Matos still has some difficulty with plays in front of him. Contributes to basepath reticence too.
Bailey 10-68 but nice AB there to get BB. Lot better numbers on road so maybe he can get going here and in Anaheim.
Rodon, blasted again in NY
I’ll bet he’s enjoying the contrast between the pussy SF and badass NYC fans more than ever.
Hamstring the cause or is it New York – media, fans, “bright lights” on him, just too overwhelming for him?
Cobb delivering a perfectly timed flop.
Why can’t Cobb pitch day games worth a shit? I heard the stats on the radio earlier today. Incredible. We have one and a half SPs.
they used to say Miggy Cabrera couldn’t ever hit in day games because he was always so hung over from the night before.
I could see that for a position player.
Even when they score, they suck.
read elsewhere game started late bc A’s were having some HOF thing for long time PA guy Roy Steele who passed end of May.
Weren’t they doing something for Vida yesterday? Thought I saw vid preview w his son Derrick.
w all the giants fans in attendance and nice crowd for all this stuff I’m sure Giants fans acknowledged what was going on, especially for Blue.
Big A’s HOF deal today. I clicked by when Gene Tenace got tapped. Didn’t stay.
Man unbelievable but it’s the Giants, Conforto and Bailey set the table up 1st and 3rd and Crawford takes a strike 3 down the pipe!
Matos time hopefully?
Alright Lamont comes thru with that RBI hit!!
And now Estrada with a perfect bunt for another RBI, great work Thario that was fantastic and fooled everyone!
Nice bunt Thairo. Welcome back.
Runs! Yay!
Fuck you, Cobb.
That twelve year old kid on the A’s takes Cobb deep twice?
They’re still primed to piss this game away thanks to that insanity.
Pissing it away.
Baseball can be so crazy, you take Nick “baby face” Allen he’s right out of Rudy!
Your 5ft nothing,a Buck 50 weight dripping wet ,with no talent whatsoever!
And yet here is with 2 bombs 💣 off of Cobb salad today..
The relievers are suddenly gagging.
Crack his ribs next AB.
If this guy hits the ball it’s a fail. This guy looks like Schmitt. Flailing at everything. But Jackson is lost.
Yeah. walk the .183 guy.
These guys definitely play to the level of their opposition
Wow. Schooled by the suckin’ A’s.
AJ is in the cage warming up. Assuming the E Coli has cages.
Jesus Christ Kappy u have a fresh BP but know u let Jackson continue to walk , gives up the hits for the lead!! Wtf 😳 it’s on you!
On a happy note, our friends’ son won the US Open surfing contest in Huntington Beach.
He felt jesus in his heart. Well, I’m sure that was more inspiring than the windswell slop they surfed. I really don’t understand why those guys who grew up on the best Hawaiian waves bother with summer in Calif. with no south swell. Money, I guess. Obviously, tho, the kid is great.
They go where the tour stops are.
I know.
Only time I visited Huntington Beach I was 19 headed back from late summer Baja with s couple of friends. We figured we had to paddle out at the pier just to do it. But the beach was so crowded the city had installed markers to maintain narrow aisles to the water. Uh, no thanks. UP to The Ranch. We used a canoe with a tiny two stroke on an outrigger to get from the Gaviota pier to various perfect, empty peaks.
It’s bizarre to see Crawford look incompetent.
We love Craw, but we’re ready for the Luciano era.
Yeah, he makes the tough plays sometimes, but that was an alligator throw.
2 pitches 4″ off the corner called strikes.
Kruk pretends the first two bad calls didn’t happen. One day I might pay to sit behind home plate just to give the ump a running preview of his report card.
You can do that at San Jose. Not so easy at China Basin.
Good to see everyone in the pen getting into the act.
Wow. This is a major league joke.
They gave the guy a double lol freaking Conforto had it in his glove E-9 as the wheels are falling off..
“DeSclafani, 33, is currently on the 15-day injured list with a Grade 1 elbow strain. The right-hander received a PRP injection on Sunday, making him a no-throw for the next six to eight weeks. Under that timeline, he won’t touch a mound again until late September at the earliest and will probably cede his roster spot as a 60-day IL placement.”
He’s done for the year.
We need a check swing robo ump
Give the A’s another fucking freebie.
Pathetic is right.
And the A’s are rubbing our faces in it.
Hmmm. Where’s that pitching we needed?
Only the 1st year Disco helped now 2 straight years of garbage with season ending injuries. They need to cut bait with him, he’s toast..
Chuck he’s in Baltimore by the name of Jack Flaherty!
Yep.
What a troubling pathetic effort. If the season goes down the tubes, it started here.
Craw 2 errors, Conforto error. 7 walks by the A’s.
Craw’s error on the routine grounder was the turning point of the game.
actually it started when Farhan did nothing at the trade deadline. As I said many times at the time.
You mean Flaherty would have pitched better than Stripling? Or he would have taken Cobb’s turn today? DeJong would have taken Craw’s spot over the weekend, Burger’s in there instead of Davis, and everything would have been right with the world?
Cobb would have had one more day of rest and it would have changed everything.
The whole point is FARHAN said he would be aggressive. Getting Flaherty would have improved the team for little to nothing. That move wouldn’t even qualify as being aggressive. Pollack? Please. It’s just disappointing is all.
The Giants “exploded” for 6 runs and still didn’t win.
That was pathetic. Shitty pitching. No power. And now we head into a month against good teams. Dog days, Sirius rising, is here.
8 straight road losses including bottom feeders to Nationals,Tigers,A’s and a so so Reds team isn’t going to cut it .Now the good teams are coming up, these losses really hurt them..
Yep, from 14 games over to 10 is a big deal in a month where you’ll be really happy to finish 500. These were huge losses, barring some crazy, inexplicable run they go on over the next week.
“it started…”
Huh? what started after returning from road trip that ended with L to Detroit was 7-2 homestand winning 3 series in a row–A’s Boston and AZ. Before losing 1 this weekend. With shoes off that adds up to 7-4.
The offense went on hiatus through much of July resulting in negative run differential. And yet because of stellar pitching and D their record was 12-13. And in August they have sunk all the way to 3-2, so that’s 15-15.
If Giants play .500 ball rest of the season they wind up 86-76. Reds Brewers Marlins all lost today too. Lot more baseball to play. It ain’t all gonna be pretty but should be better than today.
Did this same calculus, and the 2 losses to an historically shitty team still hurt. They would have had a much nicer cushion for the rest of the month without these two inexcusable failures.
On the plus side, the A’s had to take the piece-of-junk trophy.
As opined a lot here, Giants do sometimes seem to play down to the competition, but they’re also capable of playing up to the competition too. I guess that’s the main hope going forward against the tougher teams.
you guys are absolving the team of being the worst hitting team in MLB for the last 6 weeks. And having 1.5 starters. It’s still outrageous to me that you think this team, as currently constructed, can make the post season. We needed reinforcements and Farhan sat on his hands as usual. Weak leader.
I share your fear that they might have a shitty finish and not make the playoffs. I don’t think Jake Burger and/or Paul DeJong and/or Jack Flaherty would change that outcome, if the rest of the roster continues to underperform on offense, and the pitching takes a nosedive.
This team probably *can* make the post season, but it wouldn’t go far. While I do understand some of the arguments for Z standing pat, I was actually shocked he did nothing (Pollack doesn’t count, WTF). Never seen a major GM (or whatever his title is) do nothing to improve a team that is right in the hunt. The only thing that would prove him right is if all his “kids” that he didn’t want to trade somehow manage to bring championships over the next few years. Very doubtful that’s what is going to happen. They say hope is not a plan, but that’s about all there is for the rest of this season…
Baseball aside, I can’t grasp this Krystal Cascetta story…
It is both weird and a little disturbing. Maybe something odd behind it we don’t know yet. I have known adults who just can’t handle it all anymore, but killing the baby….
