Estrada useless since he came back. GRR

___________________________________

The Estrada phenomenon is an interesting one. At the time we picked him up Loo gave it a thumbs up saying some guy at his bar says he’s extremely underrated and I remember generally agreeing with that. I don’t know we’d have to go look it up.

And he has definitely overachieved in terms of what we spend to acquire him. I think we just paid cash for him ala that stupid pick up of Pollock.

But is Estrada really that good? He nudged his OPS above .800 the first year he played for us. That was nice. But never since. He’s got some speed and a little power but nothing that should have justified all the “wait till Estrada gets back” nonesense I heard on KNBR for weeks.

He’s a nice player who isn’t going to help take us anywhere. We have a lot of players like that……..

considering the problems Torres has had at SS for NY it is weird that they’d basically just give us this dude.

Coincidentally, the same guy texted me last night raving about Gregory Santos who I had no recollection of but looks like a Giant mistake now…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 10, 2023 at 7:57 am

Ha I remember Santos, hard thrower from DR. Brisbee in TA raved about him after first outing with Giants 2021 when I think he K’d side. Next outings he got hammered, was sent down and never came back. Same thing last season. 2 years he pitched for Giants, lasted 5.2 innings in 5 games 8 hits 7 earned 3 HRs 5 BBs 5 Ks.
Giants let him go to ChiSox in off season for a pitcher currently on 60 day IL from AAA.
Maybe Brisbee feels better now that it appears he’s figured things out at age 23.

Estrada w back to back 0-4s after getting 2 hits rbi double in first game vs. Angels. 4-21 August since coming back off injured list.
Unfortunately, his great first month has been followed by 200 ABs worth of .227 hitting with OPS below .700. April he hit 4 HRs (5 since) stole 8 bags (10 since) in 100 at bats. OB was .393 and it’s been 60-100 points worse every month that has followed.

Fine defensively and can steal a bag but that first month obscures stats that rate him at league average hitter. And as we saw the guys that took his place were even worse.

I don’t see the hate for Estrada at all what do you want the reject law firm of Walton&Wisely&Diaz (0.53)? Hell Estrada&Wade were A/S candidates tearing the cover off the ball the first few months can they help it that besides All World Wilmer Flores(Willie Mac Award Winner) Davis having a fine season,Conforto who isn’t but somehow leads the team in RBI’s. Really it’s the OF play that sucks hard along with 75 errors second to Boston tha

Right now this team just can’t hit and score any runs ,with “NO CLUTCH HITS “but it’s thru out the WHOLE LU not the usual reliable guys of Wade&Estrada at the top and yet with all that their still right there leading the W/C race?? Baseball is weird and unpredictable..

Paul’s 7:42 is well taken. Estrada as is still big improvement over Wisely Diaz Schmitt and Villar. See what happens. Any twitter news on Luciano? Yaz?
Ohtani impressed Giants a lot I think. Hard working focused competitor. Can hit run bases and pitch.
Btw tomorrow’s game is Apple special. Grrr

I didn’t see any reason why Kapler pulled Manaea who was dealing the best he’s ever pitched last night and struck out Ohtani TWICE and yet he gives up a leadoff double with Ohtani coming up and they walk him intentionally with Beck anyway when Manaea the lefty and his pitch count still good (62? with a shitload of K’s)couldn’t face him?Dumb decision especially when Beck imploded and the game was over right there..

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 10, 2023 at 10:50 am

Isn’t that what that tv guy Carlos argued after the game last night tho everyone else at the table said hell no and raised the issue of reasonable pitch count based on many recent appearances?

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 10, 2023 at 10:43 am

If they are gonna treat Manaea as the quasi-long-guy-middle-innings-starter, they might as well let him pitch 80-100 pitches. Or until the wheels fall off.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 10, 2023 at 11:37 am

Well, when he’s the long guy they usu wait 4 days between appearances.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 10, 2023 at 11:53 am

I was distracted last night and left the tv on for the postgame bullshit. During an argument over pulling Manaea, I thought I heard someone say he’s pitched multiple innings in five of the last eleven games. But as I say I was distracted.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 10, 2023 at 1:06 pm

actually the game log I looked at showed that a couple of Manaea’s recent appearances were .2 IP; others were higher, like last night. His last long outing (7/22, 5.2 IP) he gave up 9 hits and 4 ER. Since then, his IP have been more limited (one 4.2, 4 last night) and his whip has decreased from 1.41 to 1.27. Looks like they’re handling him well. And he’s responding. Easy guy to root for.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 10, 2023 at 11:03 am

Last pitch Manaea threw almost left the yard. thought Kap’s timing and guy he brought in was perfect. It’s on Beck, who was rested and ready and unfortunately got lit up.

  9. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 10, 2023 at 11:43 am

Estrada may be working through some post injury rust, soreness, pain, whatever. I’ll take him over anybody else they’ve trotted out there. He can steal a bag now and again. What happened to all that running and stealing that SF was doing in Spring Training, and Kapp was saying they’d do in the season?

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 10, 2023 at 11:50 am

When the season started Bart was something like third or fourth fastest on the roster. It’s a slow team And a bunch of guys have lingering leg issues. We’re very fortunate to have Bailey doing what he does to even up the imbalances against other teams.

  10. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 10, 2023 at 11:46 am

Ohtani likely saw nothing in the Giants team the last series that would give him good reason to come to SF in the offseason — assuming he wants to join a WS contending team in the near future. His chances of coming to SF are slim and none, IMO, at whatever PR-generating price they may offer…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 10, 2023 at 12:14 pm

Fair enough, but who of big market teams that could afford him is a WS contender?
LA is too obvious, SD is worse than SF, so are Cubs. Seattle is .500 team 3rd in AL West.
Mets spending program didn’t work and Yanks seem averse to it too after adding Judge/Rodon.
Only he knows what’s most important to him and where he feels that might be.

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 10, 2023 at 1:27 pm

Too obvious doesn’t eliminate LA and is he good enough to turn a borderline or non-contender into one?

I primarily “bet” the stock market, but here’s the odds dated the end of last month:

    SHOHEI OHTANI’S 2024 TEAM ODDS*

Los Angeles Angels: -250 (bet $10 to win $14 total)
Los Angeles Dodgers: +950 (bet $10 to win $105 total)
Baltimore Orioles: +1000 (bet $10 to win $110 total)
San Francisco Giants: +1100 (bet $10 to win $120 total)
New York Yankees: +1200 (bet $10 to win $130 total)
Tampa Bay Rays: +1800 (bet $10 to win $190 total)
Philadelphia Phillies: +2500 (bet $10 to win $260 total)
Atlanta Braves: +2500 (bet $10 to win $260 total)
New York Mets: +2800 (bet $10 to win $290 total)

Me? These Japanese players like one-way (no transfer) tickets back to Japan. Consequently, my money is on Seattle #1, Bums #2, SF #3, and a return to what he knows best, Angels #4.

    I have to disagree Snarkk,
Othani is no fool he can see the overall potential of this team especially how great they will be in the next few years with C Bailey,SS Luciano ( who imo could be a superstar batting alongside Ohtani) Matos in CF and yes Estrada at 2B that’s a strong up the middle at key positions. Both corner out field positions could use a boost but they still have career AAA hitter Ramos&Hainger coming back in September along with 3Hamstrings Yaz on the same left leg.Giants are going to be the class of this division soon and Ohtani could put them easily on top over an aging Dogpile team &a Padres team with no discipline that just plays thru the motions.I like Melvin but even he has to be frustrated by this team..

Plus Ohtani huge following will fill Oracle whether he’s pitching DH,OF the fans will be all over his jersey sales, plus advertising,, concessions and more, hell even people that don’t know baseball will want to come and see him play,he’s a marketing dream!

Best thing ever he wasn’t traded at the deadline, now Z could finally get his face of the franchise by loading up the Brinks Truck and OUTBID any other team screw,it Z needs to make a statement cause he hasn’t done it in the past..
Pitching staff of Webb,Ohtani,Harrison,Cobb,Wishenhut looks damm good next year for the SF Openers.

I don’t think there’s a chance in hell Ohtani stays with the Angels. One playoff appearance in 13 seasons is not playing well. And that was 10 seasons ago. Well before Ohtani’s time.

Not that Seattle is a playoff perennial either, but they are a young team that is playing well right now and they were in the playoffs last year. We won’t throw that kind of money at him.

    Get Soto . . . . .

  15. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 10, 2023 at 1:57 pm

  16. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 10, 2023 at 2:08 pm

I agree with blade that Seattle is the favorite to grab Ohtani.
I may have to go to a couple of games over there next season to see him. Giants will play in Seattle next year. The stadium is walking distance from the downtown ferry terminal, so I can take the ferry across without driving a car onto the ferry and easily just walk to the stadium…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 10, 2023 at 2:42 pm

Been to Seattle upwards of a dozen times . . . Compared to other cities, it’s always been a relaxful time. I suspect the news coverage is also civil and non-controversial too (don’t know for certain though???). The couple of times I have been in Japan, was always mellow as well. Japanese folks are very quiet, circumspect, and reserved as a group. Coupled with the fact, they are the most honest folks I have come across in all my travels, e.g., I probably shared a number of times about my Oakley sunglasses being left in an airport restroom in plain sight near one of the sinks . . . fast forward 3 hours later, they were still there.

My point is that there’s no way in hell he’s going to play in Philadelphia, Atlanta, much less New York city. He just doesn’t strike me as someone who desires that type of limelight.

  17. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on August 10, 2023 at 4:05 pm

I seem to recall in ’21 some of us wanted Estrada on the playoff roster over Dickerson, who had a lousy finish to the season. But Kap wanted another lefty bat, and Dickerson struck out 3 times in 4 PAs vs. the Bums in the NLDS. Thairo? We’ll never know. Yeah, he looks bad at times, he can’t seem to help himself swinging at sliders away. But as many here have said, I’ll take Estrada all day and every day over the AAAA players the Giants trotted out there.

  18. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 10, 2023 at 4:43 pm

I’d bet Ohtani goes to Seattle at 1/2. Not that I like those odds but I’d bet that before the Giants at 8-1. Or LA at, what, 2-1?
