“Meek as Kittens”
Nice call Unca Chuck.
It’s not the hardest thing to understand. Why aren’t they hitting like they did earlier in the season? Conforto hasn’t hit a homerun since July 8th. This probably means we’re stuck with him next year btw. Thanks Farhan. No Yaz. No Haniger. Crawford is like a million years old. Estrada is overrated. And our leader did nothing but sit on his hands at the deadline.
This is what we get.
Chuck deserves accolade today — that apple tv local radio broadcast option he flagged turned a miserable game into a bearable one with some good moments. Miller and Fleming were excellent (of course, they benefited by comparison with fart-joke DTrain and some stiff). Miller’s adapted his style to the new pace of the game. A couple of times his divagations stretched past the pitch clock, but he covered. No one listening only to the radio would’ve known that the foul ball happened ten seconds before he announced it. But he consistently narrated all other plays in perfect detail exactly as they occurred. His simple “that’s gone!” for Nathaniel Lowe’s HR into the bay was startlingly apt. His jokes about Lowe primping his roster name from Nate to Nathaniel were sort of funny. He also engaged in some well deserved rumination on and criticism of the Giants’ offensive offense.
Ramos’s LD double screaming over the CF’s head was a rare pleasant moment. Estrada is our second best infielder (unless you consider Wilmer one).
I realize absence of any offense major issue for Giants. But just trolled ESPN MLB pitching matchups for series with Rays Mon-Wed. Giants have same starter listed for all three games: “Undecided”. That one word encapsulates 2023 season. Stubborn refusal to acknowledge starting pitching deficiencies and unrealistic belief that trotting out three “openers” every five games recipe for long-term success.
Cobb & Webb better throw gems today and tomorrow. Otherwise this 15-game gauntlet against best teams in AL/NL could go downhill quickly.
well, the opener to Stripling match up held vaunted Texas lineup to 2 runs last night. sure he wound up giving up usual couple of (solo) bombs but you have to take result like that vs. Tampa and Braves as well.
Hitting funk is what’s doing them in. Nice for Ramos to get whack in his first AB back.
What you said . . . and wasn’t that what all the belly-aching was about after the trade deadline? Seems pitching is holding up nicely, e.g., SF Giants last 50 innings 1.22 WHIP (which is below their season WHIP of 1.23).
Point well made by both of you. I agree current malaise is due to anemic, dysfunctional, nonexistent offense. My point on the pitching is when your top wildcard team at trade deadline with only two established starters how can Giants hierarchy not find some pitching support.
Quote from Scherzer during an in-game interview yesterday, when asked about the “old school” managers he’s played for (Leyland, Dusty, Showalter, Bochy): “They know when to use analytics, but most importantly they know when not to use analytics. They know when to trust the human element of the game and trust the players”…. Of course managers can only play the hand they get dealt…
Scherzer was long on opinion.
The “human element” of the game … by which Max means judgements over when he comes out of a game. Of course, he’s not complaining about the mechanistic OF positioning the machines have wrought. Another interpretation might be that the soulless automatons taking over are a little too sensitive to the “human element,” since it’s a fact that humans tend to follow certain observable patterns more often than not.
Rangers were 25-26 combined in June and july. Now 9-1 in August yikes. 40-20 at home, more even keel 29-27 on road. LHP starter Heaney today.
Didn’t see any of game last night. Baggs in TA made mention of Kap using platoon RH PH Matthias vs. Chapman instead of letting Craw hit against him. Saw comments on how that worked out, but any thoughts from those watching at time?
Against the Angels, Mathias hit an inside two strike 99 mph fastball from a RHer for a single. Craw has 2 singles, 3 Ks in 6 ABs, including the playoffs, against Chapman. Maybe Kap was trusting his human side by going against those “analytics.” If there was a mistake, it was not giving Mathias the take sign on 3-1.
I was thinking that as awful as this has become, it’s still better than being saddled with some of those decade long horror show contracts. We all know the names.
Anyway, it’s good to see the team arrive early today for some extra BP…
If your star hitter for 2 months is Wilmer Flores, that ain’t good…
On this roster, an 898 OPS is worthy of your star hitter. All they need from the others is to not be terrible, especially Conforto, Davis, and to a lesser degree, Pederson. The only one in the line up right now who looks normal is Bailey.
Like I said last night Ramos was the better option then Mathias hitting with a runner at 3rd with one out down 2-0 you want a guy with power up there instead of Kapler thinking a weak ass hitter but vet presence in Mathias was going to do anything.I immediately thought no way their going to score and I was right..
A 3rd wild pitch from Chapman was their only hope.
That fierce determination Ramos projects made it look last night as if he could’ve ripped that beautiful double against anyone under any circumstance, but we’ve seen him fall short of that, too, despite the admirable ferocity. I do think Kap should keep last night’s exit velocity in mind, however, as he makes decisions about Ramos tonight. Let’s see some pop in this LU.
But Ramos doubled against Smith in the 9th. When Bailey was at first base with one out in the 8th, if someone offered you the choice of
1. Ramos batting. You have no knowledge of what the outcome will be.
or
2. Ramos leading off the 9th with a double. You have no knowledge of what happens next.
which would you have chosen? In the game of what if’s, it’s just as easy to give Kapler credit for his decision.

There’s a lefty. No excuse not to have him in the line up.
Re pitching trades..true i was advocating for pitching at the end, but some of us, including me, we advocating for a MI and an OF.
Any of us could see the holes in this team. Yes I’m thrilled the year is going well. We are (currently) a playoff team. But the GM’s (or prez of baseball blah blah) is paid very well to improve the team. THIS team. yes I know he has to have a long term view as well, but ANY GM will tell you your job is to win. Win now if you have a chance. These professionals have lived their whole lives seeing teams loaded with talent (Niners anyone?) that don’t win. Nothing is guaranteed in sports, or life. Farhan blew it. Badly. I hope we still excel in the playoffs, but this isn’t a team with a real shot at the title, and with some improvements it could have been imo
he totally blew it. I get so tired of people crying “well you didn’t know what the other teams were asking for!” That’s true. But we have a baseline to look at that saw a ton of mid to shit level players getting traded for guys who would have made us better. He sat on his hands and did nothing. Pathetic, fireable offense.
I don’t think anyone’s getting fired for failing to increase his team’s chances of winning the WS from 1.6% to 1.8%.
Giants currently occupy the 2nd wild card spot.
The D-Backs’ record in the last 10 games is 1-9.
Atlanta is unloading on the Mets 11-0, but the Mets broadcasting crew is keeping it entertaining. Very good broadcasting crew.
Gary Cohen
Ron Darling
Keith Hernandez
15-3 now.
17-3, with a Mets position player pitching.
21-3.
There’s something to be said about not letting a position player pitch. It can get pretty ridiculous.
Giants offense has to improve from within going forward. Take a look at FA market for hitters–outside of Matt Chapman, there’s Bellinger who knows yard all too well, not much of value to see beyond there. Unless of course Mark Canha or Paul DeJong were who you really wanted Z to get at deadline.
Pitching galore of course as in some of the rentals Z passed on. Intriguing option is 25 yr old from Japan Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Almost all the top FA pitchers are 30 except for 27 yr old Urias, who is having lot rougher year than before.
I looked at list of hitters moved at deadline, and not impressed. Mostly guys that were struggling with team that let them go like Josh Bell or Carlos Santana, age 30+ (further decline looming on horizon) league average and below hitters. Nothing wrong with DeJong or Amed Rosario but not one difference maker out there at all. We saw Randall Grichuk in OF for Angels lol. And they will be available in off season.
holy shit watch this whole thing
oh yeah saw this on “superstation”. epic brawl Pascual Perez oh man
Everywhere but here big night for offense yesterday. 170 runs scored in 15 games and half the league scored at least 6 runs.
CF: A. Slater R
SS: T. Estrada R
1B: W. Flores R
C: P. Bailey S
3B: J.D. Davis R
LF: Luis Matos R
DH: M. Conforto L
RF: Heliot Ramos R
2B: Mark Mathias R
P: Alex Cobb R
Kapler doubling down on his Craw disrespect! Error by Estrada tonight? Mathias leaves 5 men on base? Kapler shouldn’t toy with the gods while Boch is in the house.
Objectively, that is a POS lineup…
The collapse of Davis and Conforto doesn’t leave the team with much power.
Let’s not put all the blame on the ex-Mets.
Wilmer on his own has made up for those two.
This theory is PROVEN!
Thairo’s F% at SS this year is only .005 worse than Brandon’s. Brother Mathias? Jeezus.
Estrada at short is fine, just playing along with Bagg’s TA storyline today.
I don’t think it will be long until we want Schmitt back as the utility IF.
I wonder if that’s his ceiling.
I wonder what he thinks it is…
Maybe a little history lesson will cheer us up…

There are two things that stand out about that story: the crowd of 8100 at the Polo Grounds and Putsy Caballero.
It was Putsy for me…
That is the 6th bomb Cobb has given up in ~10 innings.
Well that didn’t take long as Seager goes yard off of Cobb!
Even the sun player Slater according to Krukow lol 😎 couldn’t stop that one from going out..
Well, good night folks. Drive home
Carefully.
What du ka me
Up is I post in my phone and I do t see the post for 10 minutes
Well said…
cofefve
Didn’t someone become infamous here for saying that????
Forgot the reason why (context?)?
Trump
Hallberg sez it’s probably our only chance ….
Ex Giants hitting coach Donnie Ecker now the bench coach/ offensive coordinator probably licking his chops working with this young squad mash the ball!!
Omg 😱 was that a run??
Wilmer double,Bailey single and Wilmer should of been dead meat at the plate except for the short hop eating up the catcher, but hey desperate times means desperate measures..
That’s the second ball Sun Field Slater has missed in CF this year.
So if I understand Kruk correctly, Matos or Ramos would’ve misplayed that sun shot drive to CF into a triple or HR.
Yeah Krukow how’s your best sun outfielder in Slater looking now?
Funny I don’t see the Rangers outfielders having a problem with the sun..
Mathias’ first 3 runners!
Exactly like last night, late on a fat pitch. Poor Mike.
They should take extra batting practice before every game, the bats are cracking hard right now best in a loooong time..
Doesn’t seem to be a way to watch or listen here
I must be missin something
Quick hook from Boch there. This guy Heaney is regular SP with 22 starts and 113 innings coming in. 40 pitches to get 4 outs.
What?
Pfffttt!
Well it fuckin worked
Everything does against this lineup
Fuuuuuuck. We should be bunting when we load the bases.
Such futility.
Barry should be on the field.
“night in old Havana” promo was nice.
Gotta admit last movie I went to see a second time in a theater was Buena Vista Social Club.
Our biggest weapon is their wild pitches. Davis has to lay off the 8″ wide pitch.
Mine was Behind The Green Door…
Debbie Does Dallas. Saw it at the Palm Theater in San Mateo.
Estrada is 99th on the 99 problems with this fucking team.
Braves have 4 guys with 25+ hrs.
Who the fuck are we kidding?
They also have 6 hitters with over 60RBI’s led by Garcia with 29 HR’s and 89 RBI’s the Giants forget it it’s pathetic..
I’d love to know how may times we give up runs when we don’t fucking score with the bases loaded.
I’d say 95% of the time.
That was an inning earlier wasn’t it?
That’s 19 out of 20.
It was called reducing fractions or lowest common denominator or something.
I still hate school and I’m almost 90…
Drive home safely folks . . .
Think anyone DWIs after a sporting event?
Funny, none of my DUI’s were after the thousands of games I went to. And got wasted at.
You’re not familiar with the drive home on the 101 from Candlestick, but to avoid the traffic jam out of the park, I once drove home on the shoulder for at least 10-15 miles until I hit San Bruno. Shitfaced, but no DUI for that.
I saw some beat tweets about sage and incense rituals in the batting cage today. Dispelling the demons, I guess. Maybe would’ve been a good idea to add some consultation with the high priest of hitting, who happened to be in the house for the 93 team celebration.
Where’s Vogey’s wife when you need her?
good 1
Can we get a 3 run dinger? From SOMEONE???
Here comes rally killer
Bingo!!
I’m out.
Single/Walk/Popup and a DP!
Remember those plays tomorrow to win tickets on KNBR so you can go watch them do it for you!
I’m sure Mac is enjoying The Chris Stratton Story tonight.
Ha, nice title.
Wood gets to stay in as cannon fodder to save the bullpen for tomorrow.
Double Pfffttt!
Ramos provides one highlight at least.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Giants went after Jeff McNeil this winter…
Monday will be the 20 year anniversary of a major NYC blackout.
It happened late afternoon. The Giants were in town for a night game at Shea,
and I was walking to the subway to attend (alone). It was still very light out but
I noticed the traffic lights weren’t working. When the train didn’t come, I figured
it out. I was lucky. If I’d left the house a little earlier, I’d still be in a tunnel somewhere…
Mao! Mao!
Most depressing movie I ever saw…
Fuck it!
