A 7 run win. God, I don’t remember those. Meckler could be the burst of energy this team needed at the trade deadline. We’ll see.
Madonna turns 65 today. Not sure I’ve ever felt so old as when I read that earlier this morning……

Yes nice feel good W that hopefully gets people off the ledge, if not deadline remorse.
Undecided(s) shut down Rays night after they went off and bats got going (Conforto !).
Thx to Xoot for Slusser interview with Greg Johnson at end of thread last night, lot of questions asked and answered whether you agree with them or not. Posey seems to be more involved and has proper perspective to help guide things in right direction from where he sits.
Couple ?s of my own:
what happened with Harrison last night?
what was James impression of RC field and game itself?
Going tonight, will report. The Harrison/Mulhollland comparison was prompted by the clips of him on the postgame last night.
Sounds like you hit a lot of games, you’re a good fan
We’ve got a routine now. Park at the lot at Folsom and Embarcadero, sit under the bridge at Epic steak for oysters and martinis, walk to the ballpark and back to get some steps in. It’s been pretty sweet, except for all the Ls we’ve endured.
What’s your plan for an August evening in West Sac? No bay breeze there.
Big thank you to xoot on the Chronicle interview of Greg Johnson, son of Darth Va . . . uhh, Charles Johnson. In my opinion, I read 3 noteworthy quotes from him. One of which snuffed out the conspiracy theories going on here and elsewhere about the trade deadline. Another one which indicates that Z is in the driver’s seat insofar as his contract and long term viability here.
“We could have opted out for next year, and we didn’t do that, which means Farhan is going to be around, both of them, through next season, and nothing’s changed as far as our desire. Farhan and I have been having discussions on what that rate format looks like for both of us, and he’s been so busy — I keep telling him, “Well, if you want to get together and talk about it and to finalize … and he’s just kind of like, ‘I’m fine.’ ”
“The responsibility of management is to balance that short-term desire to get everybody excited and interject something into the last few months of the season but not at the expense of losing three of our best prospects. And the potential bigger deals had three to five of our best prospects on the list. So I felt very comfortable about what was happening. Farhan kept us all abreast through the entire process with all the calls that he had, and nothing really was going to move the needle — or if it was going to move the needle, it was way too expensive.”
“I would say that he’s retired and lives in Florida. As far as any criticism directed toward me, I’d say to people that he’s not involved in the day-to-day operations, and his involvement with the team is more passive. It’s just sad to me that he gets painted as some conservative, when this may be one of the nicest, most gentle people you’d ever meet. I believe he is more aligned with our values than the narrative that is in the press.”
Good pulls. The sympathy for his father bypasses the never ending stream of evidence that the guy likes to fund facsist candidates and causes. The info about Farhan has a flip side: Z may be keeping his contract year options open. Slusser did a good job getting so much out of Greg. I bet she submitted her Qs to him before they sat down.
Yes, Zaidi is more likely to walk than be fired. I suspect he’ll want to stick around at least a few years to guide things after the work he’s already put in.
I wonder if his father is senile? Not excusing his past behavior, but it may explain why he was tone deaf to the numerous criticisms regarding his donations, when afterwards, he indicated it wouldn’t happen again . . . and of course, it did.
I agree James. He may not be a “Superstar” here, but every owner dissatisfied with their current GM/Operations Manager, would be knocking down his door to hire him. Thus no surpirse he’s keeping his contract year options open (as xoot indicated above).
Charles handed over his business responsibilities to his scions years ago and his agents turned his $150M+ Hillsborough estate into a tax dodge museum that is hilariously open to the public but not really open to the public. http://carolands.org/tours/ He then fled to tax shelter Fla, very possibly suffering privately from dementia. His agents maintain his rep as a Republican mega donor. He surely doesn’t make those inane decisions.
The very rich just don’t like paying taxes and the GOP love helping them along. It’s a win win for the both.
Fun game last night, you just never know what Giants team is gonna show up.
Oh I understand how rich republicans conduct their business matters and rationalize their predation. But Hershel Walker? Marjorie Taylor Greene? Et al. There are ways to give those despicable malcontent puppets truckloads of dark money, privately.
I bet the honest answer to Slusser’s last Q is: I have no control over his finances; his long time advisors handle everything, including donations, and he’s had no idea what’s going on for years.
Rough night for Arozarena, who went 0-4 at plate with 3 Ks and had some funkiness in LF.
Junis and Manaea combined for 7.1 innings 3 hits (all singles) 3 BBs 12 Ks 0 runs.
It’s taken Manaea until mid-August to get his ERA under 5. Stripling needs one more good outing . . . crazy how bad and unlucky they were early on.
Quite a few guys took one hit or another on La Gran Tenochtitlán road-trip.
You can’t ignore context of where Giants are vis a vis rest of NL WC teams. Everyone else lost yesterday including Brewers–Marlins Phils in East, Cubs Reds MIL in NL Central.
Beside ATL and LA, vast middle ground amongst NL hierarchy and Giants surely right there even with all the injuries rooks and callups.
Whole lot of nothingburgers from Greggie. It completely ignores the fact that there were mid-level guys to get for very cheap. The Cards traded Flaherty and DeJong for middling to non-existent prospects. He’s playing the fans for rubes. Like the Cards wanted Harrison for Flaherty but the Cards got him for low-level prospects.
In the words of Billy Shakes, much sound and fury, signifying nothing.
As far as Chuck goes, I love “Pay no attention to my dad jacking off in the corner. He’s harmless.”
Kyle Harrison went 4 innings threw 59( that’s just over 14 average)pitches gave up 3 runs but had O walks and 7 K’s
The O walks is impressive considering they use a robot controlled tighter zone in AAA than the unpredictable Major leagues.
Kontos mentioned it was a good outing especially no walks but also he would like to see him stretched out farther to go 5 thru a possible 7 innings and get his pitch count up to atleast 75.
But it’s no doubt the Harrison watch and arrival will be here soon if he keeps developing, im guessing 2 more starts go deeper 5-6 innings minimum and he will be joining the club..
Do they use that robo ump every game in Sac. I know Kontos implied they do, but I don’t trust that studio show.
“At Triple-A this year, half the games use the robots for ball/strike calls and half have a human making decisions subject to appeals by teams to the ABS.” NBCSports two months ago.
The scheme makes sense. Mlb umps get called up from aaa. For now, they still need some old school training. Working the robo ump half time and enduring appeals must provide accuracy training , too. That idiot last night blew 14 of his 47 called strikes. He’s no rookie.
I’m baffled as to why Harrison’s pitch count is being held so low. He’s been nothing but a starter his whole time with the team. He pitched 6+ innings in 2021 and 2022.
The Padres roasted Flaherty yesterday. 7 runs in 3 innings, 4 walks allowed.
Looked up game log. Over last 4 starts he’s pitched 19 innings allowed 14 runs 22 hits 10 BBs.
He’s certainly not any better than Manaea or Stripling. ERA is 4.70 WHIP 1.57.
Not even worth looking at as FA, let alone a rental. Certainly not anything resembling “difference maker” in good way.
My cousin found my other cousin
“what was James impression of RC field”
I’m not James, but I’ll say it’s a very nice AAA ballpark. As good as any in the nation, I’m guessing.
Stockton, of all places, has a very nice Single A ballpark. The Stockton Ports are an A’s affiliate. The A’s shelled out money for a great Single A ballpark.
It’s next door to a nice arena the city of Stockton shelled out money for.
I know the city manager who unilaterally ordered that ballpark design revised to be a single level, and who enticed a minor league team to abandon Modesto to play there. He did the same thing in Reno, recruiting the DBacks milb team to become the Aces.
Yeah, the Modesto franchise had to make do with some renovations to a crumbling old ballpark, but it’s an OK ballpark now.
The name was changed to Modesto Nuts to reflect the agriculture in the area. It became a Rockies affiliate for several years, and is now a Mariners affiliate.
It was probably easier to market the Modesto team when it was an A’s affiliate, connected with a more local MLB team.
I don’t think the A’s paid for the Stockton park.
Wow, that was a sweetheart deal. Stockton’s not exactly rolling in money. Modesto wasn’t willing to tear down their old ballpark and build a totally brand new one.
Things in Stockton were fairly booming before the subprime mortgage debacle. Many thousands of new homes in foreclosure wiped out property tax revenue and the Great Recession nearly finished the city off.
From 2008. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2008/jul/28/subprimecrisis.useconomy
Zumie, asking this because you have probably been to both. I loved the Chukchansi Park, where the Fresno Grizzlies play. Primarily because I love the “sunken diamond” and it is in the middle of downtown Fresno. I haven’t been to the Stockton yard. Which is better?
I haven’t been to the Fresno one yet, unfortunately.
I live much closer to the Modesto and Stockton ballparks.
The Stockton ballpark is excellent. They also have an area past the outfield fence that is a big activities area. Parents with kids have lots of options. It’s clearly a much newer-looking ballpark than the Modesto one.
The Modesto ballpark does have a lot of great history. Having been a Reds affiliate, Cardinals affiliate, and A’s affiliate, when all three of those teams were building dynasties, meant a lot of future Hall of Famers played there over the decades.
And famously the Giants and Yankees practiced there when the ‘62 World Series was interrupted by rain.
JD E.
Are the umps fucking blind? That was foul by a foot. I’m afraid that’s our last best opportunity.
Great throw by Heliot. Word will get around.
Ballgame.
NOW they will learn!!
Apparently Siri wasn’t paying attention earlier or he ignored a general dugout warning from his coaches.
Maybe someone unplugged her.
I’m sure the rays would use a man’s southern usa or Caribbean accent voice.
Ramos with assist.
Stripass is a HR machine when does he ever not give up a Bomb when he’s in?
Great throw by Ramos gunning down Siri at 2nd he’s got a gun and definitely a player to reckon with in the OF and exit speed with his bat as well.
Nice AB from Conforto to get BB laying off 2 strike curve everyone has been swinging at.
He’s hit ball hard lately–given state of lackluster FA market for hitters beyond Ohtani and Bellinger, would he opt out or stick around if he continues to hit?
He’s been better lately but splits at Oracle aren’t very good. OPS .794 road .722 home. HRs 9 road 6 home.
He’ll go. Well, I don’t know. If we go to the playoffs and make noise he might wanna stick around.
Then again we may be out of the race in 2 weeks.
Ramos giveth and taketh away.
Weeeeeeee suck.
Shit. Heliot wanted another kill and focused on the throw too much before he had the ball.
Stripass continues to serve up batting practice HR’s as Kappy continues to sit on his ass!
So tired of him letting a pitcher keep going when he has nothing but hit me hard..
Wow. What a fun day at the yard.
LOL laugher indeed.
Flaherty isn’t looking so bad now, is he?
Maybe he refused to become a featured bulk guy.
Featured bulk guy. Sounds like an overweight model but it sounds so much better than middle reliever.
woo hoo
eliminate those pesky baserunners
“Flaherty isn’t looking so bad now, is he?”
Yes, he’s looking bad.
Not as bad as Stripfuck.
Zum’s correct and that’s the point–if you already have one Strip, then whyinell do you want to add another? Z has to wear Strip, but adding more mediocrity isn’t the solution. It’s not about defending Strip. Z didn’t think Flaherty was any better or “difference maker.”
Giants win 2 out of 3 opener games. Starting Flaherty, the guy who gave up 7 in first 2 innings yesterday and 14 runs in last 19 innings, isn’t going match that or win more games given state of Giants offense.
Dare I get my hopes up?
No, Kruk, you DON’T get greedy. You are down 6. A double here would be better than a home run.
Oh yeah. Slater and his limp noodle. This team is just dead in the water.
Slater has 3 hits in his last 20 games.
He’s 7-58 through July and Aug, and 0-August (0-14).
Get him out of he’s hurt. Get him out cuz he sucks.
Gawd. 4th DP?
Ross Stripling set to open up a new restaurant called “HOMERS”
He knows that’s a winning name since he now has given up 20 HR’s in 77 innings that’s one every 3 1/2 innings my gawd that’s just pathetic and even more pathetic he will opt in next year ( cause no way another team will want him)so Z has him for another year at 12M
Doh!
They could eat his contact Xoot but it’s never the Giants way, shocked they did it with Rowand Bowtie showed some balls and even then the Giants management fired him anyway..
Giants paid la Stella $5M+ last year for 180 ABs, and $10M this year for nothing. (Seattle signed him for the minimum over the winter but released him in May.) That’s $10M eaten and $5M wasted. I think they owe the Stripper $15M next year.
4 DPs.
Kapler got confrontational post game with a reporter who questioned PH Slater.
“Not as bad as Stripfuck.” Bullshit unca . . . In his last couple of outings, Flaherty has completely sucked versus Stripling. In his last outing, he allowed 7 runs in 3 innings. Conversely, Stripling has been doing quite well in his last 3 appearances. For the entire season, I would also take Stripling as his WHIP is respectable at 1.30 versus Flaherty at 1.55.
“ What’s your plan for an August evening in West Sac? No bay breeze there.”
Apparently we paid extra not to sit in the shade.
Oh, my.
95 now, cloud cover and a bit of a breeze – we’re happy! But, man, is it sad to see Matos, Villar, Schmitt, and Bart here.
Man we suck.
Re Flaherty… or another starter… Just as predicted our openers are running out of gas. What if it was lorenzan, or schurzer? How about a freaking hitter? We brought up the new kid, and in doing so we locked him on the 40 man roster for the next 3 years or risk losing him in rule 5 draft. STUPID!
Still hanging onto the 2nd wild card spot at the moment.
I know it’s too late for this but this is nuts!! Think SF has injuries? How about the Rays?
From the Tampa bay Times! Shane McClanahan to have Tommy John this week.
This is the latest in what has become an epidemic of ulnar-collateral-ligament surgeries on the Rays’ pitching staff. Going back to the summer of 2020, the following Rays’ pitchers have had Tommy John surgery: Colin Poche (July 2020), Yonny Chirinos (August 2020), Jalen Beeks (September 2020), Jacob Lopez (January 2021), Tyler Glasnow (August 2021), Cole Wilcox (who was part of the return for Blake Snell, September 2021), Ian Seymour (2020 2nd-round pick, June 2022), Andrew Kittredge (June 2022), Seth Johnson (40th-overall pick in 2019, August 2022), Brendan McKay (September 2022), Shane Baz (September 2022), Jeffrey Springs (May 2023), Drew Rasmussen (internal-brace surgery, July 2023), and now McClanahan. In Glasnow, Baz, Springs, Rasmussen, and McClanahan, the Rays have effectively seen their entire intended 2023 rotation undergo UCL surgery in the last two years, with the last three of those pitchers likely to miss between half and all of the 2024 season as a result.
Craw has a batting average of .197 now.
