A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Overmatched

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 19, 2023

Come on, this wasn’t a surprise. Guys like Strider and Glasnow, they are going to shut our terrible offense down with the greatest of ease.

Now if this Yonny guy does the same thing I’ll be surprised.

Oh yeah Strider is really good. Checked out splits before game, and he’s just as tough on LH as RH, home or away. Ks ton of guys everywhere.
Craw is just hard to watch. Not being able to turn hot smash into DP in first really hurt.
Only saving grace might be he finally hangs it up and Giants can move on.

As Mac said, Reds won. Marlins lit up Gonsolin for 5 HRs to end Dogs 11 game win streak as ball was flying out of Latrine (Dogs hit 3 themselves). Both LA and Padres will play split DHs today in lieu of impending weather issues, no games Sunday.

Luciano’s injury really hurts. Craw is not doing anything but hurting the team at this point.. When will Schmitt come back?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 19, 2023 at 8:54 am

Yes, losing guys that might have helped feels like Brad Penny year all over again. Estrada Yaz Luciano Slater Haniger Winn et al.

  3. xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 19, 2023 at 9:04 am

Yeah, we get beat by good and bad teams alike. Brebbia and Haniger are returning, though.

Some Saturdays, the NYT offers the welterweight exegesis of a famous poem. Today it was Elizabeth Bishop’s One Art, which begins: “The art of losing isn’t hard to master.”

It’s really about fate, I guess.

I’d rather see Tyler Fitzgerald called up to play SS then Schmitt atleast he shows power in AAA something Schmitt lacks.Giants I guess get get a boost soon with Haniger starting his rehab, one stat that sticks out he had a .840 RISP pct avg (16-40)which with this bunch of non productive hitters could only help.

Are the Niners really going to trade Trey Lance? There’s no way they make him the #3 right?

  6. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 19, 2023 at 10:09 am

i now believe that Allen is going to be the #3. He’s actually a perfect #3. Trey is gonna get traded before the season starts gents. That’s what I believe.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 19, 2023 at 10:16 am

My son started making that argument months back. I discounted it. I don’t now. I think you smart guys are right.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 19, 2023 at 10:17 am

and it wouldn’t surprise me if Allen’s already been told this. Why else would he come here with 3 guys in front of him?

  7. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on August 19, 2023 at 10:34 am

Buy high, sell low. Wiseman, then Lance, then Bart…. Bart 2018 # 2 pick. Spencer Strider 2020 4th round.
    SF 2018 draft…
    1 Joey Bart
    2 45 Sean Hjelle
    3 80 Jake Wong
    4 106 Blake Rivera
    5 136 Keaton Winn
    6 166 Patrick Hilson
    7 196 Edison Mora
    8 226 Solomon Bates
    9 256 Ben Madison
    10 286 Alex DuBoard
All but 2 of these guys were college players, so a total bust 5 years later:(

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 19, 2023 at 11:05 am

Nope. Not gonna trade Lance. We either let him walk after the season ends or sign his 5th year option if he shows anything and then trade him. They aren’t gonna get shit trading him now. Allen is going to the taxi squad.

Anyone coulda had him anyway and passed.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 19, 2023 at 12:24 pm

they aren’t gonna get shit trading him later, either. I’m on the record: they’re trading him before the season starts.

  9. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 19, 2023 at 12:16 pm

Lance isn’t going anywhere to small a sample size , what 4 games overall?, and still on his rookie cheap contract, theirs just to much unfounded hate for him thu the media I just don’t get that.Like Purdy they have a great situation with QB’s contracts.Darnold wtf? He’s still seeing ghosts after 55 games he’s started he’s not the answer for sure.. Allen practice squad best scenario are another team picks him up but know way he suits up unless of injury

  10. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 19, 2023 at 12:31 pm

they are going to make Darnold the #2 that would make Lance the #3. There’s no coming back from that for him. Admit the mistake and move on. Fucking Purdy saved their asses otherwise those 3 firsts they traded would be getting people fired.

I greatly appreciate the nfl debates here.

Kpfa.org Sat blues show is good today. Earl Hooker, Fred McDowell (“I Don’t Play No Rock n Roll”). Usually I listen to the morning kzsu.stanford.edu blues show too. Got distracted by chance today. Listened to the first Marshall Tucker LP. That was enjoyable, so I tried their double album. In their prime, they were nearly as good as pre-tragedy Allman Brothers. Marshall Tucker himself was a blind piano tuner. The young band came across his name when they unlocked the door to a big rehearsal space.

Johnny Shines from yesterday brought back cool memories, made me think of Robt Nighthawk. Used to have blues “sampler” lps from various labels with artists unknown to me with a song or two each. “So glad that I found you” from JS is one I remember. John Brim with Little Walter “Tough Times” was on another. Great lyrics end of middle verse:
      I’m broke and disgusted/in misery
Can’t find a part time job/nothing in my house to eat

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 19, 2023 at 3:46 pm

On the LP Too Wet to Plow, maybe his last: “…Shines plays the most spare, softly echoing notes imaginable. The guitar seems to shrink from the singer’s pronouncements (as it does on Robert Johnson’s ‘Come on in My Kitchen’), to retreat and then slip back, now threatening, now comforting. This blues creates a silence asking to be broken.” — Greil Marcus, RS 264 (May 4th, 1978)

You’d probably like the Sat 9 am stanford radio show. Blues with a Feeling (which tips some of the cards), aged fellow, local roots, calls himself The Bird of Paradise. He plays Robt Nighthawk occasionally.

With our QB injury history I think we keep all four of em. It really doesn’t cost them anything if they do.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 19, 2023 at 3:10 pm

personally i’d name Trey #2. But it just doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen. Better to trade him now before he has to endure the embarassment of being the #3. The dude needs to practice, he ain’t getting any reps as the #3. Trade him for a 3rd round pick and be done with it.

      • Winder's avatar Winder said, on August 19, 2023 at 4:01 pm

He needs to get some confidence and playing is the only way to do it. One of his qualities was supposedly he was mature for his age and so he must realize he has to perform. I believe he is still the 3rd youngest Player on the team. I hope we give him so more rope. To trade him now for a 3rd is going to do anything for us when we could more than likely get the same deal at the end of the year.

  16. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 19, 2023 at 3:54 pm

Glad the Giants didn’t bother looking at SS Paul DeJong at the deadline.
He just got DFA by Toronto after 13 games going 3-44 .058 with 1 measly RBI.
Toronto just recently activated Bo Bichette so theirs no room for this whacked up player who’s struggled mightily the last few years..

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on August 19, 2023 at 4:07 pm

Yeah, we already have players who can do that. I still don’t really understand how so many players get hurt. It isn’t football.

Saw discussion about this elsewhere, but I hope Kap (or whomever is giving him input) lets Ramos bat vs. RHP instead of platooning him. Joc hit 3 HRs in june, 3 in July last one July 28 and has 0 this month.
4-20 w one double, and he’s starting LF. I can’t abide either decision. Late game sub/PH fine. Giants brought him back to add pop to lineup and it’s not happening, as ISO and HR rate continue to drop.

They threw me a ball on 3-2, then they throw me a strike on 3-2. Why don’t they do this against any of the other guys in the line up? Why me?

  26. James's avatar James said, on August 19, 2023 at 5:50 pm

Why’d you stick with the lefties against Hand?

I was showing faith in the rookie. I used my intuition with Joc. Plus there were two outs with Joc, so a little bit of analytics there, too, although I suppose you might find precedent for that reasoning in the Bochy stone ages. Plus I wanted to piss off WillieD. I’m a complicated man facing unbelievably complex situations.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 19, 2023 at 6:06 pm

ha. Ramos for Joc there would have been perfect, and get him out of LF sigh. Estrada with runner on 3b swung at 5 pitches and I don’t think any of them were strikes.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 19, 2023 at 6:32 pm

Pretty early in a back and forth game where you might want to hold on to a bench player or two, especially with 2 outs and nobody on.

  27. xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 19, 2023 at 6:21 pm

Slater has been one of top five pinch hitters over the past two seasons, right? Kap said something like the last time he whiffed with Ramos on the bench.

    • James's avatar James said, on August 19, 2023 at 6:29 pm

He did hit a ball 110 yesterday off of Minter. That’s bad luck. It’s been more than two seasons that he’s excelled. But there’s nothing special about pinch hitting. Over time, you are who are. He’s just a very good hitter against lefties and not so good against RHers.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 19, 2023 at 6:43 pm

.744 career OPS. Bumped up a bit by his surge in short 2020. Sounds sorta ok to me.

Come on, Mac, he was making the Braves look terrible. Ozuna and Rosario have destroyed the Giants tonight. That double Webb gave up to Rosario early with two strikes was pretty egregious. Goddamn Giants, who should have scored more than they did.

      • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on August 19, 2023 at 6:51 pm

Webb certainly gets some blame, blowing two 2-run leads. But one fucking out was all he needed, and he fucking choked.

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 19, 2023 at 8:40 pm

        Looked it up:
Puckett won 6 GG – died at 45
Gwynn won 5 GG – died at 54
        Sad…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 19, 2023 at 8:57 pm

I knew Kirby was a good outfielder. Surprised by the 5 GG that Gwynn won (or maybe everyone just talked about his hitting back then). Kirby is a sad story, as he had some sort of glaucoma or something similar . . . Also, he was suspected of some sort of sexual abuse and if I recall correctly, Senator Amy Klobuchar (a district attorney back then) prosecuted him. Not certain if he died before the case went to trial.

  36. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 19, 2023 at 10:36 pm

2 or 3 really doesn’t matter. It’ll only matter if Purdy gets hurt. Mainly because there is no way in hell Lance gets traded, regardless of if he’s the 2 or the 3. Either he shows enough to get his 5th year option and they sign and trade him, or they simply let him walk if he doesn’t do well. A 4th round pick now? Not worth what they could possibly get if he does well.

Problem is, he may not get any reps this year if Purdy stays upright. So he could very well still be an unknown quantity come 2024.
