Squeaked Out A Win
Nice bounce back win. All in all, that was about the best we were going to do in Atlanta. It doesn’t get any easier today traveling to Philly to face Nola with another Opener.

“Favorite Brave” hmmnn. Was always amazed at other things Hank Aaron did well in 60s beside hit HRs.
But that Rico Carty card, uh. He has bat over left shoulder despite being RH hitter and it looks like he has his right hand on top in grip of the bat.
Still alive too per B/R, at age 83. Born in San Pedro de Macoris, DR.
I always liked Bob horner.
Dale Murphy always pissed me off but he was a hell of a player.
Also well known for playing with his wallet in his back pocket…

Thing is, we shoulda had 2 . . .
A guy I liked was Darrell Evans came from the Braves (All Star with the Gmen in ’83 or ’84). Bill James once referred to him as the “most under rated player in MLB history.” Anyway, loved how Evans played the game and was one of the few highlights on very, very bad Giants teams back then. Got a World Series ring with the Tigers after the Giants dealt him.
Yeah, Tiger Stadium suited him well. Larry Herndon also was on that Tigers team.
Yeah, he was an amazing player. Hit 40 bombs in both leagues. Nick name use to be “clank” with the Braves and he concentrated on improving his 3rd base skills . . . Fast forward, he won a GG. Trivia question Mac or anyone else – who was his college basketball coach?
Curt Blefary was “Clank” before Evans…
Damn, don’t know the answer to that one.
Doesn’t seem that anyone else does either (or didn’t see the question) . . . Pasadena City College, where he led both the baseball and basketball teams to California junior college championships. The latter team coached by legend, Jerry Tarkanian.
Ha, that’s a good one.
wow Blade that’s a good one.
I coached travel ball team that played in Pasadena CC, summer of 2006. Multiple gyms on different floors. I think first or second game on a Saturday we were on third floor of building.
How about Ralph Garr? Good, solid hitter.
Against my better judgment, I’m going to Phiily tonight with my daughter, who likes the Phils. Too bad she can’t go tomorrow, would’ve been cool to see Harrison’s debut.
Yeah cool player Mac.
Till Barry Bonds came, Evans hit the longest home run I ever saw. We were sitting in the upper deck just inside the foul pole down the RF line in upper gen reserve. We were about 12 rows back and he hit it like 3 rows in front of us. Unreal watching that ball heading toward us.
Ralph Garr for me was an incredible pesky player with jet packs on for speed. He seldom struck out always a shit disturber facing the Giants, but man I respected his game he could flat out ball and drive every team he faced bonkers figuring out a game plan to keep him off the bases..
Dale Murphy could flat out hit with power and an RBI machine he was dominant in the 80’s and I still can’t believe he’s not in the HOF of course that goes with Jeff Kent..
Harrison’s pitching debut tomorrow will be fun.
Hope the kid keeps his cool and let’s his talent loose…
Looking forward to it
Longest HR on ever saw at Candlestick was Willie Stargell hitting one upper deck on the fly thru the concourse opening it was jaw dropping!!
Yeah I’m sure looking forward to Harrison’s debut as well time to add more youth especially starting pitching on this team!
Dead pull Evans. Exciting player. Murphy. The chronicle often used a grim headshot of him after his bat beat the Giants that looked like the mugshot of a murderer.
Umpire scorecards confirms angels huge lopsided zone yesterday, but Laz Diaz was far worse in his game.
Yeah Xoot. saw SI story with twitter stuff from @CodifyBaseball that said, “Stopped counting how many pitches Angel Hernandez missed today but it was an awful lot.”
In the story they show tweet from Braves announcer who says on a pitch from Fried (I think to Estrada)”…Fried fires a strike near the outside corner..,” then he repeats himself to say it was near it.
Some of those bad calls weren’t so close and they were myriad. But he screwed both teams pretty evenly on that side off the plate. Still outrageous.
The 3 longest HRS I ever saw in person (at Shea):
Dave Kingman as a rookie hit a bus parked somewhere out beyond.
GlenAllen Hill cleared that stupid apple they had in CF.
Chris Brown an absolute bomb to LC on Buzzsaw night.
Favorite one at Citifield will forever be Conor Gillaspie clunking one off the roof of that dumbass shed in right center in the 2016 WC game.
I’ll always like Tim Salmon because you could read his lips saying “that was the farthest ball I’ve ever seen hit”…
Angel Hernandez would call you out on strikes in a softball game with a pitch 3 ft in front of the plate are a pitch up against the back stop screen..
I think ML umpire is one of those jobs you can keep for as long as you want.
They had the same ushers at Shea and MSG from the time I was a little kid till whenever.
Some of these guys were literally at least 80.
It’s like being a Supreme Court Justice…
Any federal judge.
It sure is nice they made all these rules when life expectancy was 52.
Can we update some shit in the Constitution?
https://x.com/avenaim/status/1693688592860840402?s=46&t=k0FDC_rVBvlG86Y-OHTiNQ
Yeah, let’s call a constitutional update that shit convention. Most states are red. We’d end up with an amendment that repudiates the right to privacy.
We already have the Patriot Act.
And Dobbs. Things were better in the post ww ii era when some codgers on the bench thought they saw privacy rights glowing in the penumbrae of the first third fourth fifth and ninth amendments.
From Slusser’s piece on Harrison, quoting the pitching coach:
That, for Harrison, meant backing off. He was going max effort with his delivery, “grinding,” … The key to Harrison’s delivery is his back knee, which Alston calls his “rudder.”
“It was getting too deep, and I was like, ‘It shouldn’t be there. The more you do that, the more you’re going to spray the ball, and you don’t need to — your stuff is already really good. All we need you to do is just be in the zone …”
Cubs at Detroit today. cbs sports site, fwiw, projections have Cubs Phils Giants solidly (70%) in postseason, with Marlins Reds DBax 20-30%.
Saw column in TA about historic weakness of AL Central. Tigers 7.5 games out I think, at 57-67.
Finally!
While I predicted the DP, my daughter on Camargo: ‘He has a very slow swing.’
Meckler really gets quickly to the ball.
Way to go rook.
Just turned on the game. 1 run on 4 hits in the 1st.
Wow.
I’ll give Manaea credit for making the adjustment coming out of pen. Seems to be able to do what he just did–come in with runners on and get the first guy out to end the inning without further damage. This from someone who made 60 starts over past 2 seasons.
Dang threw lot of pitches that inning. Stott AB took its toll.
Meatball from Nola does not stay in the yard.
Or another one from Manaea.
Giants need to stop hitting solo shots, and get some guys on the bags when they hit ’em out…
They get guys on the bags a lot, they load them a lot.
Just about impossible for Wade with automatic outs at 8 & 9.
Reminds me: what’s the status of Thairo’s hand?
So much fun to watch teams that know how to hit.
Manaea’s a fucking stiff.
Kap wearing that Quetzalcoatl shirt again. I only find cheap knockoffs for sale on line.
It’s fucking clown show.
I think there’s a terrifying documentary out there about the bad luck that befalls people who disrespect Quetzalcoatl. Worse than stealing souvenir bits of dead coral from Maui.
Got home early. Turned on the game on MLB.
Philly announcers..”this is going to be Manea’s last hitter. Righty’s coming up after this and Hjeke warm in the Giants bullpen.
Sosa up.. Same announcer..”well this is a little unusual. maybe they are trying to get another inning out of him?” Next pitch crushed for a triple. GRR
And so painful to watch us k. All these rooks get a diet of dirtballs they just have to swing at.
Wow once again Meckler’s speed in the OF impresses.
Get in a fucking fight. This team is absolutely a fucking joke. Where’s Conforto?
Little league home run there. They gave him a home run?!?!?!? What a joke.
I guess Christian Bale is a shitty CFer.
What a shitshow.
Hjelle to watch.
Bonehead Merkle bobbles the ball 3 times and they don’t give him a 2-base error? Yeah, home town call.
And Highway to Hjelle needs to hit the road. And he GOT the DP.
mechler is bad. bad.
If you allow as many baserunners as Hjelle does guess you get chance to work on pick off move.
Hopefully Harrison has a good outing tomorrow night. They need tomorrow night for a win to at least avoid the sweep. I’m assuming this one is out of reach…
Football season can’t come fast enough.
Gimme Ramos and Matos in the OF, please.
This is not professional baseball.
Mac, unfortunate night to be at yard.
friends of mine are there, local guy/fan of BayArea teams who is married to woman from Philly territory. He must be hearing it bigtime too. Sent a pic before gametime w scoreboard in background. Missus probably posting scoreboard again lol.
I was also at Nats game whwn Webb got clobbered, maybe I should stop going.
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
What a fucking joke
Kap pinch-hitting Slater for Joc down 10-2.
Slater not Ramos again. Kap’s unbelievable.
I nearly choked on my beer seeing him come to the plate.
What are you drinkin?
Allagash ale
More errors than runs.
Now he bring in Ramos.
Oh Good. Camaro’s up. Goin’ down the road feeling bad.
Or, goin’ down the baseline feeling bad.
Oh dear. This is getting weird.
oh dear. We SUCK. So many chances and we can’t get one fucking hit. For 3 weeks.
Hunter has so much trouble being brutally honest. He’s gotta work on that if he wants a full time gig.
Wonder how that marriage is going…
For godsakes, get rid of Camargo.
Wow, talk about losing ugly.
Ugly loss. Likely wouldn’t have mattered, but at least meckler smoked that ball. More STUPID baserunning getting doubled up down 6 in the 9th.
PS Do our minor league guys have these young guys work on laying off offspeed pitches? Throw an SF rookie a curve or slider with 2 strikes and it’s almost a sure K.
True. I’m guessing they don’t see quality or command of them ML pitchers have. And changeups fool best big league hitters as well.
Ah one of those shit happens games…another GIDP with sacks loaded, Manaea losing it after string of good outings, and hopefully we’ve seen last of Hjelle and maybe Camargo as well.
Adding Harrison and Walker back means couple moves, and Estrada MRI on arm (not hand) OK.
Like in Braves series, get one bad game out of system and play more competitive the whole game.
