Hopeful Beginning For Harry
Tough game. That’s only the 2nd time Doval has given up any runs in a game since July 3rd. And that stupid deflection was just bad luck. The loss didn’t sting me much as I have pretty much given up on the season. But it was great to see Harrison who looked legit to all eyes who saw him pitch.
Day game today vs this Lorenzen dude who has to have been one of the more unlikely no hitter pitchers in recent years.

I never knew a runner could score before another runner was doubled off on a fly ball.
If the third out is a force out, timing at the plate is irrelevant. Doubling off a runner is not considered a force play. It does sort of feel like a reverse force, but not to the rule book.
What makes it seem weird is there is no tag of the runner involved. The doubled-off runner is trying to beat the ball back to a base.
I’ve never seen a run score like that before.
I have. But I umped 100 LL games. I’m sure I’ve seen it a few times over the decades in mlb. Bet the third base coach knew and screamed at Meckler to hustle. I’d like that.

That old cliche: something new at the ballpark everyday.
Consider the slomo version of the play. The runner on first tries to tag up but leaves early. Runner on third tags properly and scores. Team in the field successfully challenges (or appeals) the runner on second by throwing to empty first base for the third out. Intuitively, that shouldn’t erase the scored run. That player has been in the dugout for five minutes.
If the out was recorded at 1st before Merkle scores, the run doesn’t count.
Yeah. It’s a standard timing play because there’s no force at first.
