A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Strider again. At least we have Webby. The O/U on this game is 7.5 and if I was betting on it I’d take the under.

We are still smack dab in the middle of the wild card race. Come on. What else do you have to do? Root for it to happen.

AZ hit 2 run HR bottom 8th to edge Reds 3-2. Cincy hitters K’d 16 times, 3 for Elly, all looking.
A’s beat ChiSox and have won 3 of 4 to get to 37 Ws, so 62 Mets record should be safe.
Nats got come from behind 6-5 W over stumbling Yanks, to get to 59-69, same record as Mets.

Can’t remember where I saw this, but for all the heat Kap gets there are managers supposed to be lot smarter than he is like Showalter Melvin and Francona with teams that suck.

    • Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on August 25, 2023 at 7:21 am

But on the flip side, Willie, couldn’t you also say that guys like Boch, Dusty and Craig Counsell, who aren’t supposed to be as smart as Kapler, have teams that don’t suck?

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 25, 2023 at 8:10 am

i’m not sure I’d categorize Kap as *smart*. Most baseball players and managers are pretty dumb, IMO. Kap talks a good game but that doesn’t mean he’s smart.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 25, 2023 at 8:23 am

mm idk most locals complaining about Kap don’t think he’s smarter than any of those 3, especially Bochy, and disdain his analytics heavy approach and all the PHing/ platooning.
Texas and Houston have fine well run teams, little less sure about Brewers. Giants have done OK vs. MIL this year, haven’t they?

      • Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on August 25, 2023 at 10:13 am

Just flipping the cherry-picked old school vs new school manager script that Willie had read about.
I kind of look at it as the “baseball smart” managers that use their gut tend to bet big which means they either win big or lose big. Managers like Kapler or say Dave Roberts, are steadier using the odds/analytics, but they are also more predictable. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems like the WS champs have been more of the old school manager type but so were the teams that crashed and burned.
Also, IMO Bochy got a lot more heat than Kapler has, and for what its worth, I hope Kapler proves me wrong and takes this team all the way.

Kap’s smart enough to master Zaidiball and defend it in a debate with an upstart knbr writer.

  2. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 25, 2023 at 8:29 am

Giants took 5 of 7 from MIL but that was back in May, Brewers worst month when they went 11-16.
Since then they are 41-31, and 13-7 in August, certainly outperforming Giants.

    “3 for Elly, all looking”

The third time on a pitch way outside in the 9th inning. MLB has to fix this situation. Fans can see the strike zone on the screen; it’s frustrating watching the umps blow these calls. It takes away from enjoying the games.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 25, 2023 at 9:18 am

yeah, that was total bullshit. 10 pitch battles shouldn’t end that way.

4-8 so far in 25 game gauntlet. Lost all four series but salvaged one game each time. I’d take 6-7 record in next 13 games but must play .500 ball vs Reds/Cubs as primary wild card contenders.

Don’t know sentiment of others but I sense season might be “slip sliding away”. Doval looks tired and cracks showing in other relievers. Hitting inconsistent at best.

Yet, just when I’m prepared to wave white flag after error-prone debacle Monday and blown save Tuesday Giants find way to scrap out win Wednesday and restore my hope. 9th inning defensive gems by Meckler and Slater saved day.

Still don’t believe constant roster upheaval, sudden call-ups from Sacramento and reliance on journeyman vets to have career year performances recipe for World Series success but that’s for end-of-year arm chair analysis. Hope I’m wrong.

All of these nails banging into the coffin. Schmitt’s as good or better defensively and DJong is a very good SS. IL time. Try to heal up?

2-4 last night for Sac, walk double and 3 run HR. Scored 3 drove in 4.
Pls let him get some ABs in homestand, and beyond.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 25, 2023 at 5:19 pm

Yeah I saw that and I wholeheartedly agree with you. I thought he’d reached his max and would be a career aaaa player like his older brother. Watching him this season tho has changed my mind. He’s better now and getting better still.

For fun baseball read, check out “Sons of Baseball” by Mark Braff, subheading “Growing up with a Major League Dad.” Foreword by Cal Ripken Jr.

18 different stories told by the sons of former ML ballplayers. slim volume of 200 pages and really enjoyable read. In top left corner of cover is pic of Yogi and oldest boy “Larry”.

  10. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 25, 2023 at 5:07 pm

Can’t believe the best the Niners could get for Trey Lance is a 4th rd Pick!
And the worst of it all they traded him to the Fucking Dallas Cowboys!!!
What a nightmare run for Lance and he was handled here ever since he was drafted..

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 25, 2023 at 5:07 pm

once the relegated him to a 3 he was doomed, worthless. I guess I wish they kept him but when was he ever going to play or even get coached? The #3 doesn’t get shit.

  11. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 25, 2023 at 5:08 pm

by the way, trading him to Dallas shows you what they think of him. They would never have traded him to Dallas if they thought he was going to develop into anything good

  12. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 25, 2023 at 5:13 pm

Shanny won’t be completely satisfied till next year when he has his bromance love Cousins on board and u get the 3 headed QB’s of Purdy,Cousins &Darnold..

Sit for a couple of games J D Davis…he is clearly dragging the bat….his swing is awfully pathetic

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 25, 2023 at 5:18 pm

Unreal. Lance to the Cowboys (for 4TH ROUND PICK?) is a huge FUCK YOU from Jerry to the ghost of Eddie Debartolo. Yeaha, he ain’t dead, but still this harkens back to Walsh trading up to get Jerry Rice out from under his nose.

Yeah yeah, you were right, Flav. But this WILL bite them in the ass. Game 5 becomes even more fun. Watch Prescott get hurt in week 4.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 25, 2023 at 6:14 pm

i stand by my take, trading him to the Cowboys is the sign they think he’ll never pan out. Maybe they are clueless but Kyle knows QBs and he’s decided Lance can’t do it at this level. Woulda been nice if they had known that before they burned 3 picks

  15. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 25, 2023 at 6:09 pm

Conforto to IL with left hamstring pull,Ramos back up that’s fine with me.
    Just play Matos,Ramos &Meckler everygame!

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 25, 2023 at 6:15 pm

Yaz and Haniger both on the cusp of return. Extend yaz’s rehab and dfa slater. No one will claim him.

  16. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 25, 2023 at 6:32 pm

Yazhamstrings I could care less he will blow it out for the 4th time if they bring him back.
I would like to see Haniger get a few weeks hitting it’s been a frustrating year for him and not his fault from the start with Mexican Diarrhea Symptoms losing a shit load of weight( no pun attended),Fractured Forearm ( thanks Jack Flaherty) who knows Haniger&DeJong could be an exciting power punch down the stretch that’s needed.

Between the Giants and the 49ers, someone has to hire a competent fucking training staff.

Our fucking rookie kicker is hurt.

  19. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 25, 2023 at 6:37 pm

Jerry Jerkoff is hoping against hope that he will fuck the 49ers with this trade.

A 4th rounder. Yeah, those guys are sharp as tacks. Shanny is really pissing me off. Bosa’s still cooling his heels, Lance is gone, and we have Darnold as our backup.

I guess if we can make Jimmy G look decent, there’s hope for Sam?

All this goes back to why the hell did they draft Lance in the 1st place if they wanted a pocket guy?

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 25, 2023 at 6:45 pm

Look, forget what they paid for him. Shanny has seen him for 2 years now and he realizes he’s never gonna get it. And everything jerry jones does is stupid and wrong so that’s another reason to think Lance is never gonna be shit. Think this through Chuck, they traded him TO THE COWBOYS. Lance is never going to do shit.

Barely got it off the ground.

The Vanilla Ice concert after the A’s/wSox game in Chicago tonight was cancelled becz gun shots wounded people in the bleachers. Maybe the worst mlb game of the season; surely would be, hands down, if the concert had gone on.

This is big news, a shooting inside the ballpark. Has there ever been a shooting inside an MLB baseball ballpark, NBA or NHL arena, or NFL stadium? It’s a total nightmare scenario.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 25, 2023 at 9:45 pm

All mlb parks have good metal detectors and searches. Strange. Maybe a plastic ghost gun slipped by. But the bullets. This happened in the third inning apparently and the game went on.
