A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Annoucing Your Presence With Authority

Now THAT was fun. For a fanbase that has had to endure years of boring ass platoons, not a single HR strongman (we don’t have a guy who’s hit 30 in many many years), as well as a bunch of faceless underwhelming *prospects, we finally got a taste of what teams like the Braves get to experience. Harrison was a revelation last night. I can’t remember when I’ve had more fun watching a baseball game.

I used to say I didn’t care about all star appearances and MVP’s and CY’s because we already had those 3 beauties in the bank. And I felt like individual accolades were just shiney baubles designed to distract a fanbase away from their team not winning the world series.

But I was wrong.

You need your players to do exciting things. In baseball there’s nothing more exciting than a home run or a triple or a stolen base. Or a starting pitcher who hangs 11 K’s on your ass.

The Giants are LAST in MLB in SB’s and triples. That’s pathetic when you have a park with an area on the field called “Triples Alley”. And the only reason they aren’t last in HR’s too (they’re 22nd) is because they had an outlier month of hitting them early on. Since then they’ve been last by a mile.

Thank God for Kyle Harrison and if we could please be gifted a hitter or two who could do the equivalent I would be eternally thankful.

Instead of Pollack I had suggested they try and land Teoscar Hernandez before the trade deadline. He has been taking of late. Last 57 at bats hitting .439 5 homers and 18 rbis. Will be a free agent and should be likely reasonably priced and be the next Joc primary DH but from the right-side and can play some OF. Joc is certainly likely moving on I would think. Bellinger was the other cat that I thought we should have made a run at after the Judge thing fell through. He has a mutual option so could be a free agent but will command a much bigger deal. Would expect Cubs will spend what it takes. He would be on pace for a 30 homer 100 rbi season over a full season and hitting .320 with 18 stolen bases currently.

That was fun! What a great start. And so cool with him being a NorCal kid that he had a shitload of family and friends in the yard last night.

Great article on Kyle in the Athletic. Not sure who all has the Athletic, but sharing the link.

Let’s get a W today and a series W. That’s what needs to happen with regular frequency if we’re going to call ourselves a playoff team.

i couldn’t believe it when i read today that we were last in triples. How does that even happen? How does that happen when you play in a park that has a triples alley in it? And to be last in SB’s and also HR’s (over the last 2.5 months) is just an embarrassment. Our offense fucking sucks.

  4. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 29, 2023 at 8:56 am

We are from 20th to 23rd on all offensive stats. But we are 10th in ERA and WHIP. IMO they don’t have to be world-beaters on offense. Score 3-5 runs a game and they’ll win a lot of games, again IMO.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 29, 2023 at 9:45 am

that 20-23rd ranking is a mirage. They have last in everything offensively for the last 2.5 months

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 29, 2023 at 10:02 am

Well, they had some very good months early on. Not saying they’re going to reproduce that (but, why not….it’s basically the same team with a few minuses and additions).

All I’m saying is that if they can score 3-5 runs regularly, with their pitching, they’re going to win more than they lose.

Yankees just released Harrison Bader. Worth a pickup and sending him to minors to see what he can do??? We are close to Sept call-ups he can at least run and field can’t hurt to be in the bench with expanded rosters…

mlbtr has 3-4 stories of teams waiving guys (Donaldson Clevinger Corrasco), like many of those Angels acquired at deadline including Giolito and Hunter Renfroe. Claims awarded in reverse order to record, but possible for WC contenders to add someone of note, for league min $$.

Didn’t Padres deny they were interested in Cody Ross 2010, refuting story Giants picked him to block them?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 29, 2023 at 4:31 pm

I think the clubs that pick up new player do owe him the prorated 1 month of whatever his current contract is. Still, shouldn’t be issue for Giants if someone they want is still there.

the Angels are just the most stupidly run franchise I’ve seen in quite some time

  8. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 29, 2023 at 4:36 pm

Reds and Marlins among contenders would have priority over Giants for any of the waiver players. Not AZ or Cubs.

HUGE games remaining with Cincy (we have a half game on them). Need to put distance between us and them.

Zona 1/2 up on us. Hard to do as a Giants fan, but hoping the bums beat ‘em tonight and we beat Cincy. If that happens, we’re back in the 3rd WC. Go Gigantes!

Cobb has struggled his ass off last couple of starts. He’s due!

Nice ABs this inning as Matos drives ball to RF.
Even from DeWhiff, who fouled off bunch of pitches and made SP work. He’s fine and has already taken advantage of rbi situations and driven in 5, and is improvement over Craw.

  12. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 29, 2023 at 7:23 pm

Not so nice for Schmitt who gets a second life on a pop foul ball drop then takes strike 3 right down the middle.

We should pick up Hunter Renfroe. Power off the bench. He is hitting .239 with 18 homers. Would be 2nd on the team with 18 homers.

      God, I hope not.
He did the right thing tonight and last night, but letting Webb pitch the 9th a couple weeks ago was a blunder that, but for the grace of Patrick Bailey would have been a devastating loss from which they may not have recovered.
Say what you will about the way Kapler manages the position players, the algorithm for the pitching staff works.

  33. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 29, 2023 at 9:05 pm

No idea how Slater caught that ball and avoided injury – angle of his glove was so weird. Looking at the “slo-mo,” I was surprised he didn’t break his wrist from impact with the ground (but he avoided that at the last second I guess).

Regardless, helluva performance by Cobb and impressive past 3 days by Giants to resurrect August slide. Don’t have hangover tomorrow. Finish Reds and carry momentum to San Diego and Chicago.

Heston is wild story. 35 years old now like Cobb is, hasn’t pitched in ML since 3 innings in 2017. Debuted in September game for Giants in 2014 but left off post season rosters. Made team as rook in 2015. by 2016 sent down to minors and had health problems. Traded to M’s bounced around for couple other teams.
Also hit 3 guys in the no no

  39. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 29, 2023 at 9:34 pm

Replays show Matos took a crappy, shallow angle towards that drive into center, then had to shift out and towards his right shoulder and the wall to make a jump at it. If he takes a deeper angle towards the wall to start, he may have caught that ball. If Meckler is out there, with his speed he probably makes that play. Oh well, super effort by Cobb…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 29, 2023 at 10:08 pm

I’m not hanging anything on anyone there. That was a hit, pure and true, IMO. Matos will get better. His relay putout last night was text book.

Great game all around. Let’s Roll!

A top Anejo can be as good as a top single malt scotch, if you’re in the mood to be open about it.
Agree to disagree. Matos has a ways to go as a fielder, but I like his game. He’s young, he’ll improve. And, he’ll starting hitting a few more out of the park as he gains adult strength.
He does have a very accurate arm so far…
