Cobb Robbed
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was at my mom’s house in Palo Alto picking something up and had the radio on in the background. 1990. Scotty Garrelts had a no hitter going in the 5th inning and in order to not jinx it I decided to stay and listen. Out after out recorded, finally it’s the 9th inning. First out in the bag. Second out in the bag. This is really gonna happen. And if you recall no Giant had thrown one since The Count did in 1976. I was ready to jump into the ceiling.
I don’t remember who was up but he lined a single into left field. I threw myself backwards on to my mom’s couch, devastated. So close.
That was against the Reds, too.
What a game pitched by Cobb.
Paul O’Neill iirc.
Was at a game at Stick where Garrelts was doing great, then threw wild pitch with runner on 3b that hit plate and cost them the game.
“Court 17 definitely smells like Snoop Dogg’s living room”, said tennis player A Zverev at US Open in story on Yahoo. Seems to be coming from outdoor park nearby.
I remember Texas journalists marveling at the smoke around the ballpark parking lot in Oct 2010. They became a local news story.
Last night reminded me of Yusmeiro Petit’s near perfecto in Sept 2013. Beautiful warm evening at the park. Vs AZ. The crowd was large and unified, like last night. Then PH Eric Chavez laced a single to right with two outs in the ninth. Still, one of the best games I’ve attended. Last night, race for the PS must’ve made the experience even more intense. Great baseball.
uh oh, Hurricane season resumes and hoping all Carolina Loco’s are safe and well.
Thanks Willie, not expecting much, but still going through my normal prep because it could still surprise.
Good to see you John. You’re still on Cape Hatteras? Hope all is good with you and yours. Stay safe Amigo.
Chi, I am on the inland side of the Pamlico Sound of Cape Hatteras, pretty much straight across from Rodanthe. Cheers man.
Feel for Cobb but it’s games like this that make baseball IMO the greatest sport. I know it’s probably not a popular idea but maybe the Giants should wear the orange uni’s 3/4 times a week.
I could see where if Matos took a better deeper angle first he might of had a chance, though Steer smoked it , if anything Matos needed to be 3-4 inches taller for any possibility. So no even the ”Miraculous Hydrant” Gregor Blanco who’s even shorter then Matos makes that catch..imo
As I mentioned last night. Not hanging anything on Matos. That was a hit. Matos will only improve. I dig this kid.
Reds are really young team and could be hella interesting in years to come. They lead NL in steals with over 150, with 3rd place team 40 behind them. Second in triples only to AZ. Also one of only 2 teams to K more often than Giants, while 5th in runs scored, 7-8 for slash lines #s.
Dropped 5 of last 6 and Giants pitching has held them to 2 runs total last 2 games. Be great if Webb could drop hammer on them this afternoon and lead Giants to sweep.
Awesome game by Cobb last night.
I remember a Scotty Garrelts game against the Braves. It was the first time I ever saw him pitch and I think it was his first start. The first two innings he either, walked or hit guys to load the bases and I think each time with no outs, but he kept them from scoring each inning. It was one of those nights at the Stick when there was just a few thousand in the stands but it felt like a few hundred. He walked a bunch of guys, to the point where the yells from the stands was just, don’t walk him, hit em, or beam him up Scotty. I don’t remember if he lasted all 9 innings, I do remember it was a low scoring game and we won which didn’t happen much against the Braves back then.
I remember that Garrelts game. Heartbreaker.
Huge game today. Sweep those fucks and keep the mojo going right into San Diego. Speaking of…does SanDawg show up any more?
Stay safe John.
Thx Blade, it really shouldn’t be much by the time it gets to us, some soundside flooding and maybe 40 MPH winds. Although, these things can do some crazy shit when the water is as warm as it’s been.
Just astounded by the power of these Hurricanes, particularly when they combine with high tides (King Tide? Super moon? New terms I have learned from this). Two years ago when I was evacuated for 21 days during the Caldor fire, it was out of mine, out of sight, because I was visiting friends in Colorado and just didn’t allow myself to think about what I would find when I returned. Again, I hope this doesn’t impact you and yours. Praying for you and others in that entire region.

Welcome back Yaz!
Yes glad to have Yaz back, sad to see Matos sent out again. Hopefully comes back when rosters can be added to in couple days; for only 2 players iirc.
Agree on Matos. I really like the kid and think he’ll be a solid piece of the team going
forward. Loved that assist putout at home plate the other night.
Yaz is streaky as heck, but could get hot in the last month and give the team a boost in power-hitting.
July 4 Yaz had OPS over .800 and slugging at .480. He’d just com back from 10 days IL, start of hamstring problems I guess. Now both stats off by 50 points and he’s missed all of August. Any LH power really be appreciated with Conforto out.
Just listening to Flemm on KNBR.
He agrees Matos did not take a good angle on that liner last night, but doesn’t blame him directly; ball was hard hit. Said he needs to really work on his defense — Matos sent down today but not for last night. Said Yaz probably would have played it better and would have come closer if not actually caught it on a great no-hitter ending play. I like Matos a lot, he seems a little sluggish on making quick decisions on bases and in the field. Giants minor league coaches need to coach him up in processing situations and quick decisions. He’s got skills…
Man, Cobb was sure huffing and puffing last night, I thought the dude was going to stroke out. Does he always do that when he pitches, and I just never noticed?
Yaz plays RF at home as well as and maybe better than anyone else has. Yaz cutting that drive off right there, eg. His angle on the drive last night would’ve been better. But would he have reached it? Would his newly cured hammies have held up? Who knows. It was a hit.
Matos definitely has misjudged plays in front of him, even on the bases, but he seems to be improving steadily. He’ll be back as soon as there’s room.
True, and I think it’s just speed ML game is played at vs. where he has been. a year ago he started in A ball at Eugene.
Only Joc could get on base while the pitch glanced off extended elbow flap. He is just so weird that he attracts other weirdness like a magnet.
Webb getting Cained again. Score some fucking runs and sweep these asswhipes.
Yaz having a hell of a game in the OF. Agree with Zoot – he plays RF as good as any who’s played this yard.
Glad to see Casey getting a couple of hits. Really rooting for him, as he has had a difficult “journey” to date. Same deal with Matos (whom I have liked for a few years now). Just me perhaps, but I can’t really recall this many new rookies coming up at the same time like this year. Rooting for all of them.
Ballgame..Man it’s a Stand day with 4 hits including the bomb destroying the Giants..😫
The D-Backs are in no danger of defeating the Dodgers.
