Anyone know people trapped in the storms and the mud at Burning Man? I know a contractor who used to help design and build the huge wooden temple that goes up in flames at the end. Great guy. Visited Cambodia one year to study ancient design elements. I suspect he’s dropped away since private planes and luxury RVs took over. They’re all stuck in place now, trying to figure out how to feed themselves with five loaves and two fishes.

Where is your pick in the first? My long time league picking 12th out of 14th. Better than being first as I was last year and took the overwhelming first overall by everyone in Jonathan Taylor. He shit the bed bringing me down with him. With 12th I think I can land Pollard with that Atlanta rookie my potential backup…

I know, it’s tempting to say it’s a scrubini lineup for today, but it actually has a lot of starters in it.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 2, 2023 at 4:22 pm

See what they can do vs. Snell, who can be very good but against whom you can also run up pitch count early when he’s wild. Then you can whack away at Padres pen.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 2, 2023 at 4:32 pm

Snell’s BB rate is his highest in 7 years. Last outing shutout Cards through 7 but walked 5.
4 games before that, 23 innings 10 runs 4 HRs 12 BBs. Also 28Ks, and those starts were vs. Marlins Dogs O’s and Dodgers. Only L was vs. Marlins.

  5. xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 2, 2023 at 4:18 pm

That ump last night called 64 strikes, 13 of which were balls way out of the zone. The egregious call on Estrada was tied with two others for worst mistake of the game. But the Giants would’ve lost with a robo ump, too.

Saw something (but can’t find it now) that showed Atlanta’s first 5 hitters in their usual lineup and their HR tallies. Numbers so high I couldn’t add them up in my head. Comparing to Giants is difficult because a) we don’t have a “usual” first 5 hitters, it’s always changing, and b) obviously we pretty much suck at hitting HRs.

    • Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on September 2, 2023 at 9:41 pm

And Luciano. Is Meckler starting to perform well enough that these others will be kept at Sacto? Are Haniger and Conforto going to help the team more than Matos/Ramos? I kinda doubt it. I guess maybe we’ll have to wait until next year to see if Matos Ramos and Luciano will be more permanent fixtures….

  26. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 2, 2023 at 10:17 pm

Meckler is a hazard in CF. And his hitting is non-existent. Pederson yesterday looked like he was gonna throw road flares at him to slow his ass down from crashing into him.

  27. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 3, 2023 at 7:23 am

Hopefully Harrison learned he can’t “Caveman” (Davey Johnson term) his way through a lineup. He’d walked couple guys before Coach Bailey came out and Kap could have yanked him but left him in. Didn’t trust anything else so he thew the rook 4 fastballs, last one of which left the yard, and his night (and game) over. Has to have better plan to get out of the inning.

As Estes noted on postgame, velo and spin rate per Statcast were down. cbs site had fastball in last inning at 92-93.

  29. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 3, 2023 at 8:15 am

I’m guessing the main reason a traditional starting pitcher “doesn’t have his good stuff” in a start is because he’s not fully recovered from the last start. After the four days rest, the arm is still feeling a little sore, but it’s showtime, and you gotta take the mound. So if the arm isn’t feeling fully recovered, it’s going to be harder to really snap off the breaking pitches, and velocity on the fastball can be lower.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 3, 2023 at 8:19 am

Learning to pitch well when your arm isn’t fully recovered is part of the skill of the job. And obviously that counts for relievers, too.

  32. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 3, 2023 at 12:39 pm

The next start after a no-hitter or near one is normally not a good one for the pitcher. Cobb threw the most ever he’s thrown in the last start, at 131. Kappler better have a quicker hook today than yesterday, where he blew it leaving Harrison in too long, after HE pitched the most pitches he’d ever thrown in the last start. Sometimes Kappler is frustrating…

Anyone disagree that the only offensive player we have worth keeping is none of them?
We have to of course unless we are the Univ of Colorado.
Bailey because he is young and a good defender. There isn’t one other guy is there? No other hitters for sure.
