Unless Cubs falter down stretch, Giants battling at minimum 4 teams for last wild card spot. Tired of Kapler’s bland pronouncements that Giants scratching and surviving and Craw’s statement saying Giants we’re playing good before San Diego series.
Reality is Giants have lost 8 of 9 series in past month. No knock on Harrison who is hope of future. But Webb and even Cobb despite near no-no last week have not pitched like top 2 starters in rotation for much of 2nd half of season. I’d comment on offense but I need to see it first.
Does narrow path to Sept run to playoffs exist? It’s possible. But continued inconsistency of Giants since 2017 (2021 exception) is very frustrating.
Just what we need.

Stripling’s bWAR is 0.1. Would an EKG detect that pulse?
Why not? They probably have a ball in Chicago…
Wasn’t watching but box says Winn had 5 shutout innings yesterday, in his first ML outing in 2 months.
Webb today, 2 more in Wrigley before day off Thursday. Giants got some innings to cover.
My kids going to the game today at Wrigley. Go Giants!
PS My negative waves are out there, and time to stop and just enjoy being a SF Giants fan. My brother is a lifelong A’s fan. I started complaining a bit about another loss and he just said..
Dude. Stop.
Done. Go Giants!
Giants with their usual lip service in which I say I’ll believe it if I see it,are supposedly going all in hard to land F/A Cody Bellinger this off-season who’s having a monster season and can play 1B along with all 3 outfield spots. They definitely need a LH slugger like him in the heart of the order and with Z’s still bromance ties with ex Dodgers it’s possible. He’s definitely figured out his swing again and this team is on life support on power hitters (exception the incredible Mr.ED!)so it’s time to goddam spend this off-season.
Dodgers J Urias arrested on domestic violence charge. Idiot!
A free agent after the season. Likely pitched his last game for the Dodgers considering how fast they dumped Bauer!
Nice day to be in Chicago. My younger son spent the summer before the pandemic in Chicago sharing a house with half a dozen friends and working part time as a bar back in the restaurant above Wrigley LF. His south side coworkers turned him into a temp WSox fan. The owners/mgrs of course were homers. He wore his Giants hat when they came to town. Didn’t help.
The Giants hitters are acting like they’ve never seen a curveball before.
They’re all: “What is this sorcery?”
Krukow said everybody should spend at least a year living in the Midwest.
I’m going to take a pass on that, thanks.
Been there. Done that. Overrated.
i can’t watch this shit anymore.
Want to join me and go look for some ledges on tall buildings?
60K’s in the last 5 games 1 run last 26 innings and probable 2nd straight shutout yeah the Giants Suck…
Wow. This sucks and I ain’t even watching.
It’s 2016 all over again.
It’s not just that they’re losing, they’re not even competitive during this 4-game 0-for-September spiral, getting outscored 22-4, shut out the last two games. They’re unwatchable, and so I did not watch today’s game at all.
good decision. I wasted my day till the 8th before I finally bailed.
haven’t been able to stomach 8 innings combined last 2 days. Cubs and SF 2 teams headed in opposite directions.
Pathetic…
What did you think of Webb? I would have agreed with you yesterday about him having a “fall off” after his complete game, one hitter, but just me – I thought he did pretty damn good, e.g., retiring 10 straight Cubs hitters between Suzuki’s homer and Gomes’ double to the wall in the fifth.
Anyway, I am still optimistic about the Giants. They have absolutely “shit the bed,” dropping 17 of their last 25, but amazingly, are still in the Wild Card chase.
True as to NL WC standings, but none of the 4 “fighting” it out to see who sucks the least for last spot are deserving. Looked at B/R this AM and Giants are 14th NL for 3 slash line numbers, OB slugging and OPS. 14th??? How many Ohtanis and Bellingers would you need to put a decent lineup together?
Angels lost to A’s Saturday 2-1 and Ohtani went 0-2 with 3 BBs, Bondsian numbers that would surely happen here.
Cobb threw the 1 hitter not webb
Webb looked fine, like a solid SP. Cobb and Harrison looked like they need a week of rest. The hitters look like chumps. If they don’t take this series and sweep the Rockies they’re probably toast.
My bad, you’re right Flav.
Dodger fans are not pleased with Urias
huh just saw in Chron Yaz Wilmet and Kap had post game meeting before press got in clubhouse, and Yaz went off a bit in what he said afterwards.
Estrada meeting stuff wore off fast, see if this one takes more hold.
What does Yaz have to go off about? He’s been hurt half the season? Need to move on from him and at least half the current 26 man in the off season…
Probably what needed to be said for long time and good thing it’s out in public. words he used were “lackluster effort” among others and he said fans and Webb deserved better play and that guys need to look in the mirror.
Kap echoed same sentiments with f-bomb thrown in there per Shea.
Yes he’s been hurt but now that he’s back he can see for himself what’s going on, in field dugout etc. For longest time today Schmitt, one of the 2 rooks in lineup, had the only hit while vets flailed away.
3 teams they were even with all won today. Time’s wastin.
My kids have become Cubs fans because it is such a fun atmosphere to be there. They wore there Giants gear proudly, but couldn’t help sending me a video of the full stadium singing the Cubs win song after the game! I’ve been to Cubs games, and it is fun indeed. They were pissed the Giants were so weak. me too:(
Wow Andie’s dad wins 7th at Del Mar in photo as 15-1 shot .
Hopefully there’s a video of her watching stretch run she gets pretty maniacal
Camera caught up with her on track after the race, hugging high fiving and jumping up and down as horse led off by jockey Edwin Maldonado. What a babe
Agree with Loo’s comment before that though they might look bad sometimes, they still care, they’re professionals and obviously want to win. But watching these most recent losses, they did not look like a team currently slotted into a post-season spot playing with competence and enthusiasm to maintain that. Maybe they’re just tired. Bailey is a stud but looks tired, Wilmer has carried the team and looks tired, Joc just looks like a shoulder-shrugger now, and I can’t even remember the last time Wade or Davis or Conforto or Haniger did anything … memorable. I still like Yaz and think he can still make a difference but he’s been out too much. It’s great seeing “the kids” come up now and then and hopefully they do represent the future of the team, but of course kids will be kids and have their learning curves. The veterans? No excuses. Unless they’re “just guys” and not really all that good.
Oh, and… happy Labor Day to you all…
The Padres lost today, har dee har har.

And in breaking news, the Giants painted themselves out of the corner and released Jackson Pollack.
When they got him, I think I said he’d be DFA’d in 3 weeks. But, he got hurt and couldn’t play. For some reason, that made the DFA take longer. Anyway, it’s this kind of merry-go-round of players that is making fans crazy and calling for Farhan’s head in the call-in shows…
We fucking suck. We suck really fucking bad. Real bad.
Only thing this team is accomplished at is throwing up goose eggs on the scoreboard in the runs column.
We don’t suck 1985 suckage, but….
I may have been dozing earlier this morning, but I think I heard on KNBR that SF since the AS break has the worst BA in MLB at .214. Makes sense to me…
Not sure what the wind conditions matter in Chicago when Giants strike out nearly half of their ABs…
funny story in NYT, group asking for help finding Paul McCartney’s “lost bass”. This is the Hofner he bought by necessity for 30 pounds in Germany, “fell in love with” and used live from pre Brian Epstein days and on record through 1969, but has not been seen since.
Even Brisbee in TA calls Giants “unwatchable”. Lot of comments in thread wondering why this is where Giants are at this point of Z mgmt, and very little support. Baggs has request for questions in next mailbag, and few wondered if Greg Johnson would go back on what he said earlier about plans to extend Z/Kap, and others wondering about lack of urgency by ownership to improve product on the field.
Just wondering myself how they would plan to fix shortcomings of offense given lack of decent FA bats beyond Ohtani and Bellinger.
Seriously, what would Johnson do? How about Z? My point is that the trade deadline, time for making external moves, etc., is OVER. Only Kapler can “move the deck chairs” and hope that the team wakes up . . . In other words, possible change will come in the off season.
Heard on KNBR today that SF is in the middle of the MLB pack in attendance. That should get Baer’s attention, or whoever now is actually running the team from a business perspective. Part of it is the downtown has been decimated by remote work — the office vacancy rates in SF are among the highest in the nation, so people need a reason to actually travel into SF to see the games, they aren’t just walking to the Park from their offices for day or night games…
Not promoting and letting Donnie Ecker get away, was probably the Giants biggest mistake. Zaidi and Kapler get the credit for 2021 but I gotta think they were as surprised as everyone else on the production Ecker got from the players that year.
Hell, Craw, Longo, Posey and Belt all had an OPS above .800 (Belt was .975) and not just the vets, Estrada and Late Night were above .800 and even Ruf was at .904.
So far this year, only Wilmer is above an .800 OPS.
Ecker seems to have continued his magic in Texas.

Illuminating to say the least.
Historically pathetic…
Yowza. 30 runs less than the A’s. 168 than the Braves is insane.
Coaches still with the Giants worked with Ecker and the hitters and learned his methods. All of the IT data — the mountain of video, the swing analyses and tendencies, the summaries, etc etc — is in house. Even many of the same hitters are on the roster. Why can’t they continue? Is he a bat whisperer? Are they stupid enough to change direction because he left? Loco’s right. The coincidence is startling.
I can’t figure it out, Xoot. But yeah, the drop off sure was quick after he left.
As you point out, Posey was one of the beneficiaries of Ecker’s coaching. Having Buster at the owners’ table now would give everyone insight on this matter (and many others).
First, I don’t think there are ANY clear reasons for the drop in hitting this season (and we must remember this team as a whole was doing well prior to the All Star game). Regarding Ecker, he has done well, at all stops (Reds, Giants, Rangers). However, as John alluded to, he was not the hitting coach, i.e., that was a shared gig (co-hitting coach) with Justin Viele. In fact, Viele seems to be the more innovative coach per this article . . . https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-hitting-coach-vieles-meteoric-rise-continues-to-pay-off/1415348/
Equally important, there’s a 3rd leg to the coaching, as Dustin Lind was hired in 2019 as their director of hitting and assistant hitting coach. I think it should also be mentioned that the majority of the players, although not elite recently when these coaches all came on board, were bonafide All Stars and Champions, e.g., Belt, Posey, Crawford, and Longo. In other words, more likely to absorb the new coaching given. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents.
And Crawford is just washed up now? Possible.
Yes, that’s essentially what I am alluding to. Father Time doesn’t forget anyone.
Even if the Giants somehow make a WC berth, they won’t go far.
A team hitting this badly for the last half of the season isn’t suddenly going to wake up. A national writer on KNBR this morning said the Giants are a “patchwork” team, that deserves its 25th position of OPS in MLB, and that not scoring is not surprising, and isn’t expected to change.
I agree with blade that this offseason coming up is critical.
Assuming the Giants extend Farhan, he’s got to have a breakout offseason. I see big roster changes coming. Like half the 25, or more. They have to. Problem is there is probably not a great FA class coming available. And, this roster needs a high colonic, not just some Ex-Lax. I’m banking on this last half gives the rooks invaluable experience for 2024, and the light bulk goes off at the plate.
In the offseason, I’m expecting some guys that are let go will go public with some tough criticism of Kappler, and possibly even Farhan and their approach.
Regarding attendance snarkk, I showed this last month. I am actually surprised they have only dropped a thousand per game since a month ago. Personally, I have been to 2 games since the pandemic ended and I did not like sitting near anyone I didn’t know, much less the crowded walkways, elevators, etc. Now, we have a new strain out. To hear Republicans tell it, SF is also a crime wasteland, e.g., just try parking on any street without security in Fisherman’s Wharf area. So, coupled with snarkk said about building occupancy, I can see where attendance would be muted.

Question for all of you . . . Anyone besides Flav and I that have not had COVID-19? Almost everyone I know has had it (including my daughter).
I haven’t. My sons haven’t. Doctor friend of mine in Oakland got it a week or so back, fully vaxxed and careful, of course, and quite a few of his patients came down with it, too. All vaxxed and careful. The pandemic days are back, he said. With my health, last thing I need is Covid.
Xoot, is the new vaccine out or is that mid month? Forgot . . .
Stay safe xoot!
It’s coming this fall. That’s all I’ve heard. More precise predictions I’ve seen seem to vary. Codgers probably will be near the head of the line. And thanks. You and yours too.
I and mrs. snarkk have not. Her stepmom and husband (in Texas where nobody was wearing masks) had it very early this year, was pretty rough on both of them as they have other health issues, but they are pretty ok now. My older brother got it last year, in Santa Barbara. Was vaxxed up, he seemed to weather it OK.
The younger snarkkette has had it, twice. Last time was in late Spring ’22 at college.
My mom had it before she passed away (although, it had no impact, insofar as accelerating her cancer). This was our annual Christmas party last year in San Francisco, which I missed due to weather (actually turned around on Highway 50 after driving 30 somthing miles, due to 40-50 MPH winds and sideways rain storm). Scared the hell out of me driving. I think a half dozen relatives caught it at this party. Yikes!
Mrs. snarkk’s Mom died of Covid in late 2020, just before the first vaccines hit…
.
I had Covid. Got it during a business trip to Texas.
Mild version Chi?
Donnie Ecker interview. It’s long and with commercials, but if you skip through to about 13 minutes in, he starts talking about 2021 with even a Grave Duggar mention.
Good stuff John!
I don’t get the Niners playing chicken with Bosa.
The guy is their best player, one of the top 3 defensive linemen in the NFL.
Just pay him, and move on.
Losing one game without him playing due to a contract haggle is the one game that is the difference in getting/not getting playoff home advantage…
