A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Quitting A Month Early?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 7, 2023

No Giants game today. Thank God. Watching the last 2 games closer than I’ve watched games in a while it appears to me that these guys aren’t playing hard for Kap. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s just the dog days, but there is zero urgency with these guys. No emotion shown whatsoever. It’s also possible that they just don’t have a leader in the clubhouse who can help inspire them. Think about it. Name one. Estrada because he gave 1 speech? Not enough amigo, not enough.

I’m ecstatic about the Bosa signing. I knew he was going to wait this long and said it at the time. Nick don’t like pre season. But he’s getting paid and if he can stay healthy will lead that defense for years. It’s funny, there apparently are few things that could make me dislike Bosa. It appears the support from Trump isn’t one of those thing because even after I read this, and Nick’s political leanings are well known, it didn’t phase me. I still fucking love Nick Bosa lol.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump·

Congratulations to Nick Bosa of the 49ers on new extension. Worth every penny! 43-17 when he plays. Wow!

And 17-43 years in prison for Trump sounds about right.

some are saying that 43-17 is some code for Q. It probably is, that’s his wheelhouse

Kapler has a really deep voice. The earth rumbles a bit when he speaks. I’m sure he’s barked a few times at his team. I think the team is trying. This epic collapse is almost historic. Suddenly the whole team became inept.

honestly, I think it’s worse in Bochy’s case. Bochy actually has good players and they still are sucking. Kap is working with nothing CLOSE to what Bochy has to work with.

the cap management the front office is doing is absolutely insanely good but having Purdy cost nothing really really helps.

Lions are sneaky cool team on upswing.
But Loo’s boys are the Defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs, which he gets to remind everyone about all season. Just winning AFC is tough enough.
While Yanks and Mets playing out string, NYGs and Jets with Sunday night/Monday night spotlights.

kelce might not play. That would actually make the game better, watching Maholmes tossing darts to all those rando WR’s they have

Simply put imo the Giants are just a freaking boring team to watch with 17 of their 28 man roster right now is 30 and older! 9 is pitchers, the other 8 infielders and DH’sThey have no team speed , infielders and outfielders can’t get to balls cause they’re just to old and slow!

Personally( Except for Wilmet who’s been a baller all year)I’m just sick and tired of seeing those same rundown faces being trotted out there everyday it’s pathetic..

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 7, 2023 at 8:53 am

yeah, i led the thread blaming Kap but the reality is, we just aren’t very good. We don’t have a lot of good players. Not like the Rangers. Bochy is failing right now

Believe you nailed it. Aging roster (what’s new), sloppy defense , slow on base paths, etc. Roster construction continues to baffle me.

Based on pursuit of Judge and Correa last year, doesn’t appear salary limitations at play. Issue appears to be ongoing inability to land via free agency or trade any marquee players in their prime whether pitchers or hitters combined with average at best farm system. Harrison and Luciano have great appeal and Bailey’s been pleasant revelation but jury still out on rest of AAA call-ups.

I’m tiring fast of KNBR spin on “today’s another day.” I realize who signs their paychecks but would be refreshing to hear candid assessment of team’s horrid play over past month. Even somehow capturing last wild card spot followed by quick playoff exit wouldn’t be satisfying. Gap between elite teams and Giants obvious.

  6. xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 7, 2023 at 10:01 am

There are salary limitations. They’ve hobbled Z. Greg Johnson was personally involved with the Judge and Correa pursuits; reports suggest that he was the push behind the premature “signing” of Correa. But those attempts were more explicable as marketing campaigns than as Z level roster builders. Saw this piece this a.m. Nothing new, but a useful summary.

idk, comment appears to only apply to Verlander’s big salary (or Scherzer’s expensive option) as deadline deals. No one else would have been that expensive. We’ll see if Giants get into FA pitcher market this offseason to upgrade rotation.
Giants are still far below any lux tax implications, right?

Good stuff xoot. First, there is so much to “unfurl” here, i.e., see all the links in this article. Not certain what I believe, but one of the links in regard to payroll is interesting, as it clearly shows we are spending the most money ever, sans the 2018 season (obviously, this does not account for inflation).

Another link (click on “Fighting Crab Shacks) illustrates the old fuck patriarch fighting a crab shack near his house, along with supporting political Republican whack jobs, such as Boebert, Walker, et. al. Too funny.

Laughed also at Mission Bay development, e.g., “superloos” for a “premium restroom experience.”

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 7, 2023 at 10:40 am

This is a nice article. It backs up what I said yesterday about ownership. It says that before the younger Johnson took over from his white supremacist dad, Giants had the 5th highest payroll in baseball. That would be commensurate with the franchise value. But, now under the Younger’s stewardship, the payroll is down to middle of the MLB pack. Why? Sure, just spending $ to spend it doesn’t mean it is spent wisely nor does it automatically ensure a great roster, or wins. See Padres. But. NOT spending money on payroll almost guarantees a middling product. And, we are seeing that the last couple of years. Would anyone here say that they would NOT trade any Giants position player that frequently plays (I would say “starters”, but there is apparently no such thing on this patchwork roster other than perhaps Bailey at catcher) for the same position on the Dodgers or Cubs or name any other contender? This roster is bursting full of also-ran players. Not a one is a star or close to it. Frankly, I don’t see one in the offing in the minor leaguers brought up so far, either. And, as I said yesterday and agree with BF in his lede today, I see no strong leadership on this team, or organization. Media says Logan Webb is the team leader. Really? How can a very young guy that plays one out of every 5 games be the team leader? Estes was on KNBR this morning and practically threw management under the bus for not getting a pitcher and a hitter at the trade deadline, and talked about not understanding how they are now handling the pitchers. He thought Cobb and Harrison should have gotten extra rest after their last outings, for one thing. And, he said he’s heard rumblings that the team isn’t sure about what’s going on with playing time and roster moves. Not a good report, for sure. If they can’t get over on the Rockies, that will be confirmation of a rudderless ship…

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 7, 2023 at 3:51 pm

That was really baffling to me as well. Here is your star prospect pitcher who you have coddled all through this season in AAA only letting him throw 50-60 pitches for 3 months and then you bring him up, let him throw 90, and then short him a day’s rest?

Who the fuck is making these calls?

I haven’t been as down on Kapler as a lot of you mainly because of the team he’s forced to p[ut out there every day. But if it’s his decision to short harrison and Cobb, then fuck him. We’ve had what, 25 bullpen games? They HAD to short both those guys?

        Utter stupidity.

Z’s budget is not rock bottom. But he’s clearly on a budget unless Johnson et al specially approve a move. Maybe that’s not unusual. Old man Johnson, back when he was of Chmn of the Boardish sound mind, fired Neukom for exceeding his authority on the Beltran and Rowand moves. Simple, incisive question, however: why is the bottom line of that budget so mediocre now?

multiple questions: I am assuming you meant AJ Brown not Jones?
also, did you really name your team after the back up RB in Seattle? LOL
Otherwise looks good my man. 10 teams in pretty easy to fill out a nice roster. We just did a 12 team draft and my first 3 picks went Eckeler, Hurts then AJ Brown and I also picked up Dobbins and Coop so we have some similar players to root for.

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 8, 2023 at 7:27 am

Yeah it’s AJ Brown my bad on the typo.I’m light at RB’s imo but stacked on WR’s including the Hurts&AJ Brown “Stack” combo
10 man league your right adds more talent to the pot and I actually like a 4 man bench then some leagues 5-6 it dilutes the talent. This way they’re is still great value on waivers to hopefully bag as well.
Yeah I wanted to get creative and fun with a name Bottles of Charbonnet rolled with his name for me,Eat your Charbs, second option,3rd option Hurts so Good

Looked at Phils contracts, as they are team that chose to build through FA.
They owe Harper and Trea Turner $27.5 mil through 2031 (Harper) and 2033 (Turner).
Z Wheeler has $24 mil deal that ends 2024.
Nola (4.55 ERA) is FA this offseason, current salary $16 mil.
Realmuto makes $24 mil through 2025.
Schwarber and his 40 bombs 112 BBs $20 mil through 2025.
    Castellanos (.760 OPS 22 bombs) $20 mil through 2026.

I don’t have a bit of a problem with NFL players making lots of money. The NFL is an abusive organization. The players are throwaway humans to it, with a weak union. So, while the humans have good bodies, they should earn as much as they can. When they’re 50 and can’t walk or sleep or remember anything, they’re going to need it…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 7, 2023 at 10:57 am

Agree. I am relatively in good shape at 68, although 66 was the last time I was able to do 10 handstand pushups without any issues, as I can trace a specific injury (cleaning a firearm with an unbelievable stiff slide, that caused me to develop osteoarthritis in both wrists . . . right wrist is almost 100% 2 years later, but left is only 75%). Fast forward today, I have to do “work arounds” on my twice weekly weight lifting routine, coupled with eliminating my “travel exercise routine” of 5 sets of 60 pushups. My point is that other than getting some ribs broken from football in high school, I am relatively injury free today, with the normal aches and pains of an old fart. I can’t even imagine how these NFL football players survive to 50 years old, much less their 60s.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 7, 2023 at 11:28 am

If I were Bosa, I’d play maybe 3 more years under this big contract, make that ton of money even after-tax, and then quit with 2 years left. Pay back some of the guarantee dough pro-rata. He’d still be set for 10 lifetimes, and hopefully would not have damaged his body too much for his later years. Playing on the NFL line for a dozen years is going to catch up with you sooner than later…

Congratulations snarkk! One of the things I would love to get back into is intermittent fasting, which ironically, I started doing the month (August 2021) I injured my wrists. For almost 1.5 years, I did a 17/7 and then later 18/6 fast (18 hours no eating/6 hour eating window). I didn’t have flab around the gut, 31″ waist and I really felt good. Laughing because that all changed when I bought my daughter back from Vietnam last year in June. Cookies, ice cream, potato chips, etc., are back in my diet. I blame her. lol

      Thanks guys. Good info.
I thought early this year I’d wait until end of this year, or sometime in Spring ’24, but my financial advisor guy said in early summer I’m good with retiring at any time now. So, even though the money I’m making now is very good, I finally thought WTF am I doing this for? I’m reading all the time here on the Flap from you guys and elsewhere about people younger and much younger than I that are dropping like flies from all sorts of shit. My older brother in his ’70s has been asking me what the hell I was waiting for. An enlarging prostate kind of gave me a wake up push, too. (turns out a low PSA, so that’s the good news). So, after all that, I decided to pull the rip cord…

Yeah I retired in 2020, was my plan all along and then COVID hit and that was incentive enough. So far I have had to major health issues, well 1 was elective surgery, total knee replacement surgery 03/13/2023. 6 months into recovery and it was the smartest move I made. Back to walking pain free. Before the surgery I could barely walk around my neighborhood block. The other thing that happened in 2021, somehow I got a blood infection. Went to my doctor on a Tuesday, told him I was having extreme chills during the day. He order blood test. Two days later I get a call from Kaiser at 5:30 in the morning, please come to the emergency room ASAP. They started pumping me full of anti biotics. Went home 3 days later with a midline to inject the antibiotics at home for 2 weeks. Have to get an echocardiogram every year now. Gentlemen take care of your health. Doctors and I could not figure out how I got it. Sometimes you can get it from dental surgery.

One thing that is encouraging for Giants is that schedule does lighten up. They’ve done pretty well vs. Rox in recent years (unlike Arenado years). The Guardians have all but been eliminated and are 6 games under .500. This is probably best possible time of all to have couple series with LA, as they SP rotation is in shambles (Opie has shoulder problem he is pitching through with reduced velo) and they don’t have any incentive to improve seeding.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 7, 2023 at 2:44 pm

can they start scheduling high school teams? Or maybe college women’s softball? They just look awful right now. Worst I’ve seen them all year and I DO think some of it has to do with all this opener bullshit and how often our relievers have to pitch. They’re gassed. And the inning total compared to rest of league proves it.
      No idea about the offense.

Congrats on the retirement, Snarkk! I’d like to get there in the next couple years.

On one of the 49er Super Bowl NFL Films things, Harris Barton famously said the playing on the offensive line on an NFL team was like getting into 65 car accidents a game. Then doing it at practice all week.
