A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Super disappointing. Quantrill sucks and he bent us over like a Friday night ho. We can’t lose winnable games like that one. The final wildcard spot is ours for the taking. If we don’t suck bad enough to not be able to back into it.

They were pretty asleep last night. But glass half full is that we needed and probably should have expected winning two of three so let’s do it baby today…

Just began “wading through” the 10 part ESPN Biogenesis series of articles (all free apparently) and the Melky Cabrera part is unfuckingbelievable . . . Starts this way:

“Baseball fans know about the Astros and Black Sox as major scandals, so it naturally figures there are calls to put asterisks next to records and championships. But you’d forgive even the most avid baseball fans for not considering whether the 2012 title-winning San Francisco Giants deserve special designation, too.”

Both links to main series and specifically, the Melky Cabrera one:

Giants had more BBs than Ks last night, just not much hard contact other than Sabol HR and bad ABs when they had chances with men on base. Quantrill kept them off balance with soft stuff, and Straw made some nice plays in CF.
Giants mishandled a few groundballs Manaea induced, adding extra baserunners. Usually reliable Walker gave up the hit that wound up costing them the game.

Bailey and Harrison supposed to be battery again today.

Unrelated to baseball . . . This is Rep. Boebert, getting kicked out of the Beetlejuice Musical in Denver for vaping, singing and recording the musical. Quite funny, e.g., she flips off security, etc. This is a major news story in Colorado.

Pads shutting down Yu Darvish (age 37) for rest of season. Extended with 6 year deal @$108 mil that runs through 2028. yikes Pads now 68-78.
Musgrove is “playing catch” right now. LA smoked Wacha last night for 7 runs in 4 innings in 11-2 W at Latrine.

Nice column in TA from Baggs on Guardians Steven Kwan, local guy from Fremont and who’s parents both grew up in Bay Area as well.
Kwan is only in second year, solid OF contact hitter with 6 triples and 19 SBs vs. only 3 CS.

Guards do things Giants don’t, as they are 2nd AL for triples and 4th SBs (80% success rate). Unfortunately, only 3 hitters with double figure HRs, led by Jose Ramirez with 22. As team they are 13th AL in runs and dead last in HRs.
Josh Naylor seems like cool player, very big man with some power. Even stole a bag last night.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 13, 2023 at 8:32 am

Kwan’s first time back at park he played around in as a kid “who never stayed in his seat for any length of time” with family in bleachers–radar gun, fan zone at base of Coke bottle slide, hitting wiffle balls with his brother in play area yada yada.
Now getting hassled in LF same way he used to hear others do it to opposing LF ers.

Kid was all over the place, with fastball and slider. Command is still an issue. Giving up way too many hits.
    J. D. looks lot better at 3b than 1b. Giants making too many mistakes whole series on D.

Tyler R hasn’t been as effective lately as earlier.
However, workload is right in line with last 2 years. He’s at 68 innings now, last year 75.2 and 81 year before. This season BA against is lower at .229, and he’s walked less/K’d more than 2022.

  31. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 13, 2023 at 3:55 pm

I missed the beginning of the game and trying to figure Kyle Harrison and his struggles out. It indicated that he was only low 90s with his fastball at the start. Is that accurate or more deceptive than than that number? Especially against lefties I was expecting him to be really aggressive and be consistently upper 90s…

  32. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 13, 2023 at 3:59 pm

Missed the middle of the game and got to check in right when Curry walked the bases loaded.

I saw 5-2 then tied. Missed something. A win is a win!! Just enough by Lamont there.

A high fly 3-run HR to left by Davis. It looked like it had a chance to be caught but made it over the glove and the fence.

  33. Dean's avatar Dean said, on September 13, 2023 at 4:16 pm

2023 Giants have obvious flaws which we’ve all repeatedly chronicled. At times they are frustrating. But this team has also been very resilient all year. Don’t know what last 2+ weeks has in store but 5-1 homestand has at least revived corpse and offered ray of hope.

  34. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 13, 2023 at 5:13 pm

Boebert is the kind of nightmare person you never want to be sitting near during a theater show or concert. Absolutely no regard for the people sitting near them.
I’ve had to ask strangers to please stop talking during concert performances before. The vast majority of the time they just keep on talking. Total jerks. I’m glad Boebert got thrown out. A victory for the audience. You’d think being a Congressperson would make her a bit more conscientious.
I’m not a fan of audience members singing along unless the performer asked them to at that moment. And singing along with a musical theater performance is not what the other audience members paid to hear.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 13, 2023 at 5:18 pm

She has to understand there’s a difference between a musical theater performance and a Doobie Brothers concert. It’s just being courteous to the other audience members. She can sing along to her heart’s content at the Doobies’ concert and she would just be one of many singing along. No problem.

The vaping just makes her seem even more crazy than usual.

With 5-1 homestand, and hopefully AZ loss, Giants will pull even in loss column at 71 with those others fighting for last spot. Don’t take Rox for granted either, as they just took 2 in a row from Cubs at Coors and pounded 4 HRs yesterday.

In second one of the mailbag columns in TA, iirc Baggs said Z and Kap seem to be package deal and safe for another year. But Kap could be forced out from above Z. Attendance was mentioned as possible factor too in this regard.

Made no sense to pitch both Cobb and Harry a day short in their turns in the rotation. Like they couldn’t squeeze another bullpen game in there, ffs.
