A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Thank God It Wasn’t 8-0

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 18, 2023

Ok, what did we learn yesterday? That we are good enough to hold a 9-0 lead over a terrible oppenent and Still. Fucking. Win. Baby.

That’s just how we roll.

Niners looked ok. I’m still wondering how Puka Shell and that Williams kid were allowed to cook our defense the way they did and Brock missed 3 easy td tosses but whatever, a win’s a win especially a division win……

Heavy dose of Mc Caffrey, 20 carries/116 yds and catching passes. Only other runs all day were 5 by Samuel plus 3 from purdy. 3 catches for Kittle, including very first pass thrown…hmmnn
What was verdict on right side of O line?
Oh FYI note for Snarkk — just saw that Cal game at UW is at 7:30 ESPN.

      Thanks.
Too bad, not going to a night game.

Well, the Niners only gave up 1 sack, and Aaron Donald had 0 tackles so they did fine.

Doval was so terrible yesterday it kind of boggles the mind.
His first pitch went to the backstop.
His second pitch went right at the batter’s head, and the batter barely ducked in time.
Later in the inning he hit a different batter in the head.
He gave up some hits, and a walk or two.
    He made a fielding error.

    It was very disturbing.

Dunno what’s up with Doval. Compared to last season he’s pitched like 4 innings less, given up few less hits and 4 less BBs, k’d 3 more. BA against is down from .218 to .208, OPS and slugging are down slightly. Cutter was 100 yesterday following along in cbs gametracker, just hasn’t handled biz like he did earlier.
Taylor Rogers had to come in finish game off finally.

Shout out to other Giants (NYG) that won yesterday in tremendous comeback.
Still waiting on results of scans on Saquon Barkley’s ankle last I saw.

Luckily it was a slider that hit the helmet. He did well with the pitch clock, though.

You don’t blow a 28-14 lead in the 4th quarter to the NY Giants if your not “Tanking” and that’s what Cardinals did who clearly want the top draft pick for QB Caleb Williams imo..

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 18, 2023 at 12:48 pm

lol that’s absurd. All they players tanked the game bacause they give a shit about getting that guy? Maybe the owner wants that but the players don’t. Besides, they already have a franchise QB who’s recovering who they owe a shitload of $$$ to

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 18, 2023 at 2:02 pm

Tanking in the NFL, at least in week 2, is not a thing. There is way too much impact on the individual players. I think Harbaugh did a fairly good tank job to get out of SF back in the day. Mainly because he wanted that Michigan job. Then again, the front office provided a lot of help by getting rid of all the weapons we had. Throw in Kappy being Kappy and there you have the big fade to that 2014 season.

No one in Lurie’s contest guessed yesterdays score, but my 10-8 Giants prediction was close enough to get me into a three-way tie to be picked as the winner of an Original Joe’s dinner. I’m so honored.

Well, I avoided it for 3 years, but finally got it.
    Covid.
I generally wear masks indoors in public places, so maybe I got it in a non-busy brewpub or a couple of places I didn’t wear because I thought the traffic was low. Anyway, symptoms started last Monday, and tested + Tuesday. I’m home isolating in our lower level. Just finished the Paxlovid yesterday. Felt really funky and weak first few days, but now mostly head cold symptoms and an improving dry cough. Tested + a few hours ago, will test every other day until I test negative twice before I go back to gen pop. Hopefully no rebound. Well, at least now I don’t need the latest booster for a while…

Dang, sorry to hear that. Hopefully you recover quickly and all is well.
Gotta admit, walking around empty shopping center 7:30 this morning while doing laundry, noticed “masks required” sign outside bakery. Noticed more clerks in stores wearing them too.

Ironic Tom, as I have an appointment to get my COVID booster tomorrow, along with my annual flu shot. Still haven’t got COVID. Besides not needing the new booster for a while, the previous vaccine shots you received, obviously diminished the impact of (finally) getting it. Get well buddy!

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 18, 2023 at 5:11 pm

      Thanks guys.
Yes, I’ve had every vaxx available, including last booster in late May. I’m sure that build up help me fight this. I was going to wait until mid-Oct to get the latest variant booster, but no need now. I will get the flu shot in a week or two after hopefully, I’m done with this, and now looking at this RCV thing, too.

While we’re talking shots, if any of you guys past 50 haven’t had your shingles shot, I’d suggest taking a look at it. I had mine several years ago. From various sources I’ve heard, you don’t want it the disease. Same virus as chicken pox, something turns on a switch and the virus rises up inside you and wreaks havoc. A younger woman at my work a couple of years ago got it (in her late 40s), and ended up very sick in hospital for a week or so. Shingles can do all sorts of crap to you, including giving you encephalitis…

    One vet sports commentator’s view.

That’s pretty much how I feel. I’ve never liked Deion’s self-aggrandizement and the bullshit hype that goes along with him (as he professes to be Mr. Humble), but he took a program from shit to relevance in the blink of an eye (with the help of is kids) and is ruffling the establishment’s feathers. Fuck the NCAA. And fuck the PAC-12 for completely screwing the pooch when turning down the ESPN TV deal 7 years ago.

Here I’m just wondering when to get the shingles shot. My sister got shingles and said it was one of the most unimaginably painful things she’s had to deal with.

I’ve gotten a flu shot twice, and once got the flu from it so I stopped that shit. Still on the 1st booster and haven’t gotten the ‘Rona. Yet.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 18, 2023 at 5:28 pm

Unca, my shingles shot was a two shot deal, each shot about 6 weeks apart. Second one made me feel flu-ish for about a day and a half. Worse than a flu shot. However, I’ve heard with no exceptions that feeling kinda sick a little from the shots is NOTHING compared to the havoc it causes if you get the disease. Cost/benefit falls way onto benefit for the vaxx. DiFi, among other things, like being old as dirt, got shingles last year and was laid out for a month or two, and got encephalitis. You’ve seen her, she looks like two feet in the grave, with one finger hanging onto the side of it.

YEah, got to get that set up. My sister was 67 at the time and whe was in agony for a month. No real bad side effects but she said it was god-awful painful.

What I’d like to know is of the supposed 75% or so of last year’s Colorado roster’s players that Prime booted off the team or left, what happened to their scholarships? If he just cut a ton of them, does that mean their scholarships at Colorado just vaporized? What if they really liked Colorado and wanted to stay to get a degree? Seems breach of contract to me if their promised scholarships just disappeared because Prime showed up and didn’t like their talent…

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 18, 2023 at 5:41 pm

I think scholarships are generally year to year contracts with the right to cancel each year by some point in the off-season. Probably varies somewhat school to school. Injuries pose problems.

Student athletes have very little rights, other than the NILs they now have. Which is good for about 0.0001% of college athletes. Scholarships can be revoked at amy time for any (or no) reason. The whole union thing was exciting/interesting for a while but that died a quiet death.

Snarkk! You and me were on a similar covid arch—didn’t get it till 2 weeks ago. I was testing negative in about 7 days but i still have this low level wheeze cough which is irritating. Hope that goes away soon

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 18, 2023 at 7:23 pm

Were you on the Paxlovid or go solo?

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 18, 2023 at 7:30 pm

Just pisses me off no end that the Saints just relax and let Carolina cruise down the field, score the TD, AND get the 2 pt conversion to hit the spread. Both sides lose that bet on the push.

Much like yesterday’s ‘meaningless’ FG at the end of the game that allows the Rams to cover. Not a push like the NO game, but still, just fucking annoying.

Friend of mine has Steelers D in fantasy league, which Purdy and co lit up for 30 points week 1.
Then last night they score 2 defensive TDs off pick 6 and T J Watt fumble score to beat Browns.
