Niner Game

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 21, 2023

Hey, what’s this? Another Niner game? Yes please. Anything to take us away from the pathetic slow death of this year’s Giants team. Speaking of the Giants…..No Barkley. It’s our home opener. We smoke these fools like an old lady smoked a cigarillo in the 70s, right? RIGHT?

Sooner or later I gotta be right with that take……..

I’m glad I won’t have to stream the 9ers tonight.
The Giants are playing the Dodgers so at some point I’ll have to watch that game, don’t really want to, but I think it’s the law.

Speaking of smoke, air quality is still really bad around here. At least NYGs get to play on real grass field.

Not sure how anyone would find out, but I wonder what Posey is telling Greg Johnson and ownership about present state of team, future, FAs, platoons, vets-rooks, et al. He has 3 rings under Bochy/Sabean and 107 W season with Kap/Zaidi.

Have to look it up, but Phils of 2010-12 Manuel era were vet laden steady lineup group built around Howard Utley Rollins yada yada. Giants had more moving parts btw 3/5–Rent/Uribe left and Craw and Panik came in, Huff and Freddy Sanchez, backup Cs, good and bad of Pablo, OF was in flux too (Ishi Morse Blanco Torres Pence Pagan), plus rotation. And Bochy took lot of heat here and elsewhere over not playing rooks.

Wonder how sold Posey is on current state of affairs, and how things might improve in short term.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 21, 2023 at 7:29 am

I’m sure Posey’s acutely aware of how often the team squandered Webb’s good games. Those failures are like lightning bolts amid the general shit storm of the season, revealing the worst. But gotta wonder if Buster’s share of the team gives him much say. Advice? It’s a complicated entertainment/real estate development business at that level.

Anything can happen on these Thursday games. And we have 2 of them this year. We travel to Seattle for a Thanksgiving game. We should spank ’em but no one on either side is ready. And the Giants lose a day to travel.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 21, 2023 at 7:58 am

Giants have been in Arizona after playing there Sunday, so the travel part is the least of their problems.

Here’s my bitch with the Giants. They aren’t developing anyone. I know they have this farm system that’s grading out ok but like in a million years can you see an Acuna or a Carroll coming out of that system? It’s just ludicrous how bad all our young players are.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 21, 2023 at 8:15 am

Right? I’ve seen a couple Mets prospects bombing away vs. Marlins this week (yes, small sample size) and wondering when we’ll see the same from the Giants.

  5. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 21, 2023 at 8:09 am

More reasons to be confident? Giants have lost 7 straight Thursday night games — NY Giants, that is. Their last Thursday win was 2015 vs. Washington.

  6. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 21, 2023 at 8:14 am

The Giants have to build around Bailey and Luciano.
I could see Bailey by next season being a strong clubhouse leader.
The Giants do need to snag some better free agents. The Pederson/Conforto/Haniger type of thing ain’t happening. Pederson has admitted that he’s put on weight during the season. He said it’s not a big factor, but it just shows he’s not real serious about his career.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 21, 2023 at 8:17 am

Go big after Bellinger. Maybe Ohtani.
And get the big free agent this time. No more losing out on the bidding yet again.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2023 at 8:43 am

Joc got his $18 mill and decided to laugh and eat his way through the season. Hunter Bishop is a hologram of a hologram. Schmitt has potential. But 5+ years into this regime and we have Bailey.

As Snarkk has been saying forever, when will we ever draft on OFer worth a damn?

Chili Dog is the last all star OFer drafted by the Giants. That we didn’t trade away that is.

      That is a loooooooooong time.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2023 at 8:46 am

Ohtani? Surely you can’t be serious. He’s old and damaged. Fuck that. Bellinger? Sure.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 21, 2023 at 9:00 am

He can still hit and that will be main value going forward. 1.000 OPS hitter, even with Angels, who can run. 44 HRs/20 SBs. Biggest issue will be putting talented hitters around him sp he doesn’t get walked 175 times.

Like I mentioned over on Chuck’s blog the 49ers are going to DESTROY the NY Giants 44-10!!No Barkley no chance, besides nobody can run on the 49ers Defense anyway consistently. And in all of Brock Purdy regular season starts he has have, the 49er score atleast 30 points a game, so I’m padding it up to 44 easily along with my new FG kicker Jake “The Mood Ring” Moody who is bombing them in from 57 already and perfect for the season and 2nd in FF scoring among FG kickers, not bad for a rookie replacing old man Gould that nobody still wants..

They are the only team in the NFL that still after 2 weeks do not have a sack, interception, are a fumble recovery like are SF Giants they flat out suck..

  11. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 21, 2023 at 10:14 am

Flav’s 7:57 is accurate. Watching the speedy athletic AZ guys only brings it home even more.
but what I’m missing more is all the offense and HR power from 2021. Giants of today 9th HRs 11 OB and 13 slugging. 2021, first in HR 3rd OB first in slugging.
They had to know all the rest BC got from short season of 2020 wouldn’t allow old guys to duplicate 2021 following season. They were all done and posey retired, Giants didn’t add on and that’s what they are paying for now.

Giants of today have low OB and K a lot. so you have to make most of your ABs and have hitters who can yank ball out of the yard. Flores leads the team.
AZ has 2 guys with 30 HR power, what Z talked about having earlier when Giants were hitting.
As is they are still ways short of Dodgers, but lot closer than SF is to having non boring competitive team. I think Giants pitching will be better next year, but dunno where hitters come from unless one of younger guys break out or they can somehow acquire more HR power.

Unfortunately, this OF Vaun Brown can’t seem to stay healthy. Otherwise:

Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic wrote: “He is as tooled up and athletic as any player the Giants have had in their system — not just this season, but in a generation. He burns up the basepaths. He has an above-average arm…. He handles high-velocity fastballs. He’ll turn around a first-pitch breaking ball. He can hit for power to all fields, and because of his speed, almost anything in play has the potential to be an extra-base hit. He isn’t just fast. He’s hungry fast. From the instant he takes off, he’s got the forward body lean of a sprinter stretching for the tape. He has been timed at 3.8 seconds home to first, which is exceptional for a left-handed hitter and elite for someone breaking out of the right-handed batter’s box, like Brown.”[25] (Aug. 2022)

Yeah we had some back and forth about his power potential. Healthy, he’d be a 40/40 guy. Well, maybe 30/30. I watched him in a couple of televised or streamed 2023 ST games and was stunned. Then he got hurt.

Down with what Unca said about Ohtani. This guy is 29 and will be 30 sometime in July next year. A torn UCL can make throwing or even gripping a ball difficult, if not impossible, without surgery. So what, right? We’re going to pay him a gazillion dollars to just DH? My understanding is that the surgery he had to repair the UCL today (or yesterday) will be fully repaired by 2025 season, where he is able to pitch again. He has had 14 injuries since 2018 per this site . . . https://www.foxsports.com/mlb/shohei-ohtani-player-injuries and no, I did not add the ones which occurred a few days or one day apart from the link. This guy is a cry baby insofar as injuries are concerned. Cramps??? Sheesh. Remember, this doesn’t even account for his playing time in Japan.

I will say it here first – if we back up the Brinks truck to his Orange County home and he signs, the first time this guy is injured with us or goes “south,” insofar as performance, EVERYONE HERE WILL CURSE THE GIANTS AND OHTANI LOUDER THAN WE EVER DID BARRY FUCKING ZITO. lol

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 21, 2023 at 12:58 pm

Signing Ohtani is the LAST thing this team should do. That’s a Larry Baer PR move.
Giants had the greatest hitter in the league for a generation in Bonds, and couldn’t muster a WS win, and just one WS appearance while he was around. Ohtani isn’t the hitter Bonds was. The foreseeable future doesn’t look like Ohtani would have much of a supporting cast, certainly not close to as good as the 2002 team. Giants need multiple BIG LEAGUE players that can actually play defense, run the bases, and produce offensively. And, without getting hurt regularly. I don’t see any of this year’s youngsters other than Bailey that look likely to fill that bill; and the FA market apparently is slim this offseason. The near future doesn’t look too bright…

    • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 21, 2023 at 1:09 pm

I think PR moves are also needed to drum up fan interest after year after year of coming up short with big names. People have to pay their money to want to go and see them play and I am surprised people this season have been wanting to pay to see the Mitch Hanigers and Confortos. If I were back there living full time there are a lot of other things to do that would probably come ahead of forking over cash to see the Giants….golf for one…

But I would not do more than what we gave to Rodon, two years $22 mill a year (what does the money matter at this point with a very middle of the pack payroll expected for next year?) and give him an opt out after one year. See if that quite similar DH money we gave to Joc Itch is worth a year of Shohei. And then if Shohei wants to show he can pitch in that second year he can capitalize on if his arm is demonstrably sound and becoming a free agent after the second year.

Shanahan needs to spell McCaffrey at running back. He’s been in something like 92% of the offensive snaps the first two games. Break that back to 70% or something. That dude cannot get run down at the end of the season, or get hurt with some lingering injury. He might be the MVP of the team…

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2023 at 1:13 pm

Shanahan all offseason said how he would spell CMC as to not get him hurt like he was in Carolina. Then after the Ram game he said he ‘forgot’ about Mitchell and resting CMC.

He had CMC and Bosa in during the 4th quarter of the Steeler blowout. That he blamed on the Deetroit game a couple years ago when the Lions scored 21 points in the final 2 minutes and almost won the game.

Shanahan is screwy sometimes. He’d better not fuck this up.

I hope we rest Aiyuk tonight. And give Mitchell 15-18 carries. Bell is a solid WR. He can cover for Aiyuk one game.

Normally, any sports article on SFGate is BS.
This one, actually is pretty spot on. It boils down to ownership.
I’m getting to the point of having no confidence in this ownership.
The stadium is paid for; the real estate investment is apparently kicking in.
There are no excuses for the joke of a team this has become in the last 6 weeks.
We are getting the quality of ball in the Giants that ownership apparently is just fine with.
Gawd, I wish we had somebody like Lacob who will bust ass to field a contending team…

He makes some good points and I have read where Johnson has said he wants to break even (I think with the cap in mind).
He’s right about our current salary, Cot’s has us at $ 187.9 but our projected CB Tax rate is at $214.3 or just $18.6 under 2023 cap. The thing he doesn’t mention is that we have a lot coming off the books next year, how they spend it to fill all the holes, will be the true tell IMO.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 21, 2023 at 3:11 pm

Outstanding article (surprised I was able to access it. Must be that I haven’t read an article of theirs in about 3 months). I think for the Flap, the most important aspect of this article to take note of, is that we mostly throw our venom and darts at Z and/or Kapler. Consequently, if you agree with what the author wrote, they are mostly blameless. Or, as the author wrote:

“. . . Farhan has proved adept at finding the kind of talent that excels in his roster-building model and the team’s payroll parameters. Kapler has done an admirable job of mixing and matching with the talent he has to work with. Could they do more with a higher payroll? We’ll probably never know, because in that same interview, Johnson made it clear that the Giants have an implied budget, saying, “I don’t think we’d ever see ourselves massively exceeding that (competitive balance tax) level in the luxury tax.”

So any dreams of what Farhan may be able to do with a $290 million payroll are out the window. He and Kapler are perfect for what the Giants want to do: field a competitive team that doesn’t get too close to that tax line. Changing them out for a new regime that would be subject to the same restrictions isn’t going to satisfy anyone. Giants fans are rightfully angry, but focusing that anger on only the GM and manager is misplaced.”

  21. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 21, 2023 at 3:20 pm

Does anybody have any insight as to why the Doghairs consistently pull MLB quality talent out of their minor leagues, year after year, while Giants fans have to jizz themselves when one player (Bailey, maybe) who looks like a MLB talent shows up every once in a while? What is it that LA’s scouting and development is doing that the Giants don’t? It can’t all be just throwing more money at the minors — or is it?

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2023 at 3:40 pm

I wish I knew. The A’s have been drafting gobs and gobs and gobs of talented players since Beane came aboard. Sabean had 6 great drafts from 2005 to 2010 in his 18 year here. It helped win those 3 rings but before and after was Tony Torcado, Bowker, Gary Brown, and the like. Now we got Highway to Hjelle, Hunter (hurter) Bishop, and a whole lotta we’ll sees.

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2023 at 3:35 pm

Blade, SF Gate is a free site.

The thing is, Snarkk, how much better is the team since the regime change?

We have very little in the 4+ years of Farhan from the farm. Yeah, next season should see a lot of younger players, but Bailey is the only one so far to make any kind of impact in the majors. One guy in 5 seasons

I guess the farm is in better shape, but how much good does that do us? Next year is another placeholder year with a couple mid-level 30 years olds to man the OF? Scrap-heap signings like Stripfuck and Manaea while we wait for Dirty Harry, Luciano, and Hunter Bishop try to stay for more than a cup of coffee as they yoyo up and down the option line?

I’ve soured on this process because Greggie is just gonna be the poster boy for the cheapskates running the team. It’s obvious now that their strategy is to make a half-hearted run at big free agents and call it a day.

Man, even Freddie Freeman steals bases. The big guy has 21 and our top base stealer, Estrada, has 22. Crazy.

Everyone loves Mr. Ed, your certain Willie Mac winner, but man that RISP stat I saw tonight was really horseshit…

We do all love Wilmer, very much. Wish he wasn’t the team’s best hitter, though…..
