Another Dirty Thirty For Purdy
It’s uncanny how ofter he gets to that number. And with this D, 30 gonna be all we need most weeks.
The Giants went down meekly and pathetically to the Dodgers, at least what my friends were texting me.
This team is dead in the water. Again. Short term and long term.
I wish we had an owner who gave a shit. Jed was an absolute joke until he finally hit on Shanny and Lynch. Feels like we need a reset in San Francisco.
Hacman turns 68 today.
I tend to agree about a FO change. MY guess is the FO is doing just what the ownership group wants them to do and not sure how to change that.
If the Niners quit making bonehead mistakes and barring serious injuries we should go well into the playoffs. It drove me crazy to see us make that illegal contact on that punt when he clearly called for a fair catch.
I agree about that punt penalty.
Bloomberg’s reporting that a “chunk” of the Warriors is up for sale. May not be a big deal.
Might as well call the Giants Gram Parsons, because they’re burned, dead and buried.
lqtm
Quite the story there . . .
Ha! Umpires Scorecard reports that last night’s ump in LA made one mistake, calling a strike at the very bottom edge of the zone a ball. Third inning, two outs, 3-2 count to Mookie. Freeman then flied out to deep LF.
Harrison vs. LH hitter. Fastball was up to 95, only gave up 2 runs vs. dodgers regular lineup.
He looked good after the layoff.
Baggs wondered if Greg Johnson would walk back from earlier commitment extending Kap. Interesting he talked about Wotus as possible replacement, given Zaidi as POBO only has year left as well.
Very wide ranging Extra Baggs article. The hypothetical part on Wotus taking a one year mgr deal is interesting. But I thought this summary of the players’ actual view of the situation was a good reminder:
“…game-level decisions, including the ones that some players have disagreed with, have been collaborative with coaches, the analytics staff and front office. The full buck didn’t stop at the manager’s office door. More like nickels and dimes.”
Kappler isn’t the main problem.
I get the feeling he’s mainly an order taker from the FO.
And, often his personality traits and ways he carries out the orders aren’t the most compatible with good player relations and communication. I think this post-season we will hear lots of anonymous anecdotes from players not coming back about how they did not get along with Kappler the person, nor his tactical decisions. He certainly is not a fan favorite, to state the obvious.
The main problem is this team is almost completely devoid of solid MLB talent that is good enough to qualify and make way in the post season. And, from the minor leaguers brought up this season, unless they have a miraculous leap in ability in the offseason, that talent void isn’t going to be solved next season or even the season after. The 3 in 5 years get more distant every season…
Wotus? He’d be worse than Kapler. I don’t know how much I believe game-day (in-game?) decisions are made by the front orifice, but to think Wotus would not be even more of a figurehead for the brass is pretty farfetched.
Kapler, for all the bullshit surrounding him, has done very well getting wins with an anemic roster for all his tenure here. Would he do better with a stacked lineup? Ask Dave Roberts I guess. He’s done less with more than just about all the managers in the league. And you can add Bob Melvin to that list.
I haven’t heard anyone speak out against Kapler or his managing style so far. Well, except for Zack Littell. And plenty of others have come and gone. When the team was winning, they were all beside themselves as to how much fun the clubhouse was.
I agree with the bromide that managers get too much credit for wins and too much blame for losses. When SF had the “core four” in the Pen, one could argue that Bochy really didn’t have to manage much to get those guys to shut down wins in the 7th-9th inning windows. Kappler does not have a “core four”, nor much talent in the positions. When he had weak Giants talent before 2010-2016, Bochy didn’t exactly manage that to set the world on fire with wins, nor after in 2017-19
Your article link yesterday succinctly described the problem; misplaced blame (e.g., manager/front office); and, why it will continue, unless there is a change of ownership.*
*Spoiler alert – it wont happen.
Well, if they fall behind the Pads and lose out, it could force the issue.
But then the Pods may not fire Melvin so he can replace Kap.
Why not make Wotus a highly paid bench coach for Kapler? His positioning players was pretty solid, and it would give Kapler someone with years of experience to bounce moves/in game decisions with. I’ve read where Rob Thomson assisted Kapler a lot when he was Kapler’s bench coach in Philadelphia. As a plus, Kai Clone Correa can work in the analytical department.
Baggarly compared Kap’s late season nosedives in Phil to these recent SF seasons. Kap’s two seasons in Phil were .500 and just below .500. Couple years after Kap, WS appearance. The impression of the patterns, from 30,000 feet ….
Yeah, and the manager that got the Phils to the WS was Kapler’s and Girardi’s ex bench coach. Rob Thomson.
So the 30,000 foot view of the tea leaves looks like the profile of Wotus?
Saw this where Flemming is quoted about Posey, “I think he wants to be involved (in FO). I think he really wants to be a big part of the Giants franchise and be a part of those big decisions.”
from FanNation site per Natasha Welingkar this AM, quoted on Tim Kawakami’s podcast earlier this week.
I’ve seen it suggested elsewhere that Kap might have to be sacrificed per ownership with Zaidi given a “prove it” season 2024. but signing new mgr to multi year deal when POBO could theoretically be out the door himself after a year presents unlikely scenario.
I’ve seen enough to think only Bailey is going to be a real solid MLB player.
Why the hell they aren’t playing now and the vets are put on the IL or something is ludicrous.
Manaea is likely to get torched tonight…
Tis odd that in both Kap’s years with Phils they fell apart in last couple months, mostly because pitching fell apart. Just so odd this year that for first 3 months Giants were fine; 49-41 at one point to fall back to 27-36 since. On road they’re getting killed and pitching gets lit up, while at home 43-32.
I checked schedule and they are combined 31-31 vs. top NL teams–Cincy MIL MIA Phils DBax Cubs Dogs and SD. 5-2 over MIL 4-2 over Phils 4-3 over Reds. Still 4-3 over LA.
The opener thing overdone like they did it was never ever gonna work for a full season. They needed to at least get an SP and farhan sat on his hands. He gave up.
Yeah, Flaherty wouldn’t have been the be-all end-all but he was a warm body that would have helped. And balt got him for peanuts.
pobo?
President of Baseball Operations.
Zaidi official title.
Posey is nice to have lurking around I guess but I don’t know that he’s qualified to make any personnel decisions. He’s a fucking catcher. Whatever.
Like ton of managers, no? Including big headed guy in Texas that he played best ball for.
it’s just a flier that he would know how to run a team, make personnel decisions. Complete and total flier.
Agreed that Posey is an imponderable. Is he going to turn into a scout with $160 million in the bank?
Posey’s leadership was crucial to 2012 & 2014 & 2021 (and years in between). His ability to bring Webb along in 2021 was impressive. He may not have managerial temperament, but it’s easy to see him as a neoteric Al Rosen sort of POBO.
Flaherty??? No idea what you are talking about Unca. He completely face planted with Baltimore.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/flaheja01.shtml
he’s still injured and has been pitching through an injury.
Have I missed something I heard Greg Johnson has confirmed both Z&K are coming back for 2024? And Wotus seriously he was passed up for many managers positions cause nobody wanted him, thus he always ended up back with the Giants sort of a gesture by Kapler to keep him on board after Bochy left just to have 1 experienced coach on his roster..
Yes, Johnson has given the often suspect “vote of confidence” to Z & K for nest season…
Zaidi coveting and hording all our shitty minor league players is a sign of weakness. Why do you guys think any of them are going to do anything? Do you think any of them are going to be a Carroll or a Acuna? It’s just fucking ludicrous to believe that.
From what I’ve seen Bailey and Harrison may be real MLB players.
The rest look like more AAAAers, or MLB pine riders/role players on a good team.
To steal from Mike Singletary: I want [ Players ! ] …
Manaea likely to get ripped tonight if the v. Dodger stats mean anything…
whatever, Manaea sucks, all our players suck.
10 in 5, 16 in 10, that’s the Giants error count in recent games.
Leading the Majors !!! …
Z and Kap are both tinkerers. Is that a word? Z loves to tinker, constantly, pick up a discarded player here and there, etc., and Kap does too, putting out nearly a completely different lineup nearly every day. To me, a fan who hates platoony ball and openers, it’s not a *serious* way of building a sustainably successful team. Kap is saddled with the players he’s given, but to me, the FO just doesn’t seem serious about winning sustainably. Going into the offseason, the starting rotation is in shambles, half the ‘pen sucks, and the position players define mediocrity.
I’ve not lost my love for the Giants, but my interest on a game to game basis is far diminished. The thing is, there’s no reason to believe any of that approach will change. Next year is year #6, and some here (and elsewhere) have said they should just tear it down and rebuild. Year #6 is when the team was *supposedly* going to be rolling. If Z is still around this off-season, there’s a lot he needs to do, but history doesn’t suggest he will. I’m not a FireSabeanNow! kind of guy, but if Z and/or Kap were not brought back, I would not be upset. At all.
Well Z and Kap are guys who will never settle down
Where crappy players are well, they’ll soon be in our town
We buy ’em and we trade ’em, ’cause to us they’re all the same
And then we DFA ’em, fans don’t even know their name
They call us the tinkererers, yeah the tinkerers
We tinker around around around………….
Gold
Did you sing it?
Now I can’t get it out of my head…
Oh yeah, had to sing it to really make it work…. And you’re right, damn catchy tune…
This Apple stream with the perfectly synced Jon Miller radio feed is terrific. His precise nontv descriptions work astonishingly well. Too bad it’s Sept 2023 Giants.
In fact, Miller covers much more ground than do the shitty Apple cameras.
Well, doing nothing worked well, didn’t it, Blade? Lorenzen, Josh Bell, Garrett Cooper, fucking Rich Hill was out there for scraps. Farhan being aggressive amounted to nothing.
Kuiper with an astute HOF observation:
…”situational hitting not good lately for the Giants”.
Hey now.
Kuiper’s call of Yaz’s big fly hooking fair around the foul pole for a HR was great. Like the old days. But he screws up small things constantly.
Manaea with 5 shutout innings, and giants have couple HRs off Dogs rooks.
Not boring anyone I hope…except for those who have already given up on next year.
IMO, Manaea should never have been removed from the rotation in the first place. And no one has given up on anything. Just because you love what the FO is doing doesn’t mean others can’t be critical of it.
I just get tired of same old doom noise I find way more boring than watching baseball every day when I can. I’ve shut Giants off lately too and I’m not in love with the FO either. Mgmt has lot to fix and I miss the excitement power hitting brought to 2021 season. I do think someone like Posey could provide much needed insight and help move dial in good direction from top down. Catchers see the entire field and game and he has background for what it takes to win at this level.
But I feel better about where they are now in 2023 than I did this time a year ago. Just because giants don’t have the next Acuna (news flash everyone else is looking for one too) doesn’t mean sky is falling and SF is in some dystopian nightmare.
Yes, the sky is not falling, and the Giants are currently lumped in with a bunch of the 2nd tier teams, as you’ve said, that they need to rise above. But I guess we look at the game differently. You feel better about the team now than last year, but I’m not so sure, as I thought this was the year they’d show some semblance of consistency and sustainability. The thing that does give me hope for next year is the number of young(er)sters that should be in play, which of course did start this year.
Frankly, are they in better shape than when the last regime left?
The farm is supposedly better, but they have little to show even there. 5 seasons of Farhan’s drafts and we have Bailey. Webb was drafted in 2014. That’s our homegrown talent.
Reds lost to Pirates today and as a team have given up 90 more runs than Giants.
AZ pitching gave up 3 HRs to Judge in 7-1 L. Awesome offense, but pitching has allowed 55 more runs than Giants. Marlins lost 16-1 to MIL today.
Outside of LA and ATL and maybe Phils/Brewers, rest of entire NL is next tier group battling each other for playoff spot.
Horrible passed ball by Bailey. Meanwhile, wild pitch Camilo warms up in the pen.
Whew.
Fitz bomb!
Doval needed that.
We needed that. Good to recall: Camilo’s homegrown, signed when he was 18.
Giants won?
Holy crap …
Meckler was the beta version of Fitzgerald.
