A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Extra Inning Loss

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 28, 2023

I didn’t watch any of it but it sounds like the 10th inning was an absolute shitshow.

Acuna getting to 40/70 and everyone acting like this is some monumental accomplishment. LOL. They are giving stolen bases away. There’s nothing to celebrate there.

Or here.

30 homer guy missing from our teams since Bonds in 2004. 20 seasons!
How long since a Giant had 100 rbi’s? I don’t know. A while right? Posey had 103 in 2012, his only 100 rbi year.
Braves have a 50 HR 100 rbi guy, a 40 homer 100 rbi, a 30 homer 100 rbi, a 2 more with 93 and 96 at this moment. A big game by them and they could have FIVE 30 homer 100 rbi players. Must be a record right?
Braves have some pitching injuries so LA might get by them I hope not. LA will likely play Phily in the 2nd round. Go Phils!

it’s outrageous. Estes tore them apart this morning on KNBR. He’s so much better than Kruk/kuip–not afraid to criticize

Saw a beat tweet claiming that last night was SD’s first extra inning win of the season. Somehow, the Giants have managed (that’s probably the right word) to get fundamentally worse as the year has worn on.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 28, 2023 at 11:36 am

Yeah, SD was 0-12 till last night in extras. Till the little league game broke out.

Bailey seems to have fallen in love with throwing the ball all over the place at very inopportune times. And I’m still not sure why Luciano’s throw that hit the netting (Steve Sax would be proud) gave the runner 2nd base. Is the net considered OB? I guess so.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 28, 2023 at 12:05 pm

OB? You really have switched to football mode. I think a throw or batted ball that hits the net gets treated as if it landed in amongst the spectators. Thanks for that 0-12 stat. Sharpens the moment.

It’s useless to give in to anger or disgust or contempt after they’ve been eliminated. Healthier, I think, to just laugh at them for innings like that.

I was up in Reno for a week visiting my sister and the casino 🎰 so I was not on the Flap but I did make a donation for Greg &Christal sorry for your close friend’s loss BF, Greg seemed like a cool guy with a loving wife.Give her a big hug from the Flap Saturday!

Mrsprtdude..As long as Dave Roberts is still managing I’m not worried about the dogpile doing Jack shit in the playoffs (Covid W/S championship is just an asterisk in my book) as they will continue to CHOKE!!

Agree with BF ..Estes says it right when he lays into to this team and I appreciate that!Aurilla too maybe a lesser degree but he’s still as frustrated as he was watching the team take pitches they should pounce on and swing at crap they should be taking way to often..

Give us our team back. I don’t really care about the onerous losses; that’s baseball. I care about a team that’s treated like pixels and, guess what, they play like pixels: no passion, no elan, no nuttin’. Do I Blame our guys in the field? Of course not. I blame the general manager and the manager who concocted this slimy takeover.

(I call them “the Toad” and The Toady.”)

Please don’t subject us to another year of this.

    Give us our team back.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 28, 2023 at 4:44 pm

Kapler is just throwing the shit out there that he was given to work with.

I wonder how he would do with a better team, one that didn’t need so much platooning, but maybe his magic IS working with shit.

I don’t know, I just understand that this team had no right even being decent for as long as it did. The monumental pisser is that they were rewarded by the GM that said “We will be aggressive at the deadline for a started and RH power” and he did NOTHING. He said the same thing in the offseason and we got crumbs.

Kapler may or may not be buying into the shit Farhan and the front office are selling, but I think he did a pretty amazing job with the players he has.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 28, 2023 at 4:49 pm

Estes made a pretty compelling argument that Kap WANTED to keep going with all this stupid opener shit. They started out 14-5 doing it. They will end the year under .500 doing. Among other things Estes said he thought it made Kap look like a good manager and that Kap enjoyed that. Hey, he definitely had to manage that bullshit. But in the end, as I said 3 months ago, this was going to tax the bullpen beyond capacity.

  10. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 28, 2023 at 4:53 pm

and btw you’ll notice they have abandoned the opener bullshit somewhat lately. Hey, Manaea has been great as a starter lately. Imagine if he’d had more chances to start earlier in the year? I guarantee the pitching staff is sick of this shit. 100%

  11. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 28, 2023 at 4:59 pm

But i do agree with you mostly Chuck, I think Kap has won as many games as he was going to win with this crew. To me, this all points back to Farhan. He’s a used car salesman with a great brain. There is a cap on what he can do. And don’t give even me any shit about 107 wins. That was Buster Posey, Belt and Craw all having career years. That had very little to do with Farhan

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 28, 2023 at 6:14 pm

I think Kapler loves his aura of the thinking man’s manager. If there is such a fucking thing. Wood was the first to speak out against the opener shit. Manaea got kinda hosed by it. And it was working till it didn’t, and when it turned, it turned fast.

Farhan? I don’t fucking know. Greggie’s veiled references to the spending ceiling is really nothing more than blather. I mean there’s no hard cap. They should easily be able to spend $220 mill on their payroll without blinking an eye. We are 11th now at 206 but we have little to show for it.

What is the move next year? More of the same begging for scraps while Bellinger woos us and rides cable cars only to go to the Yankees? Speaking of Kapler, I’d love to get Kepler. He’s kinda under the radar and shouldn’t be too pricey.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 28, 2023 at 6:17 pm

Farhan may be speaking in code about preparing to fire Kappler. You can’t fire the whole roster or the youngsters, so you fire the manager. If Melvin is available, they’d have to give him multiple years, whereas Farhan’s contract is done after next season. Hard to hire a new manager under those circumstances…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 28, 2023 at 7:18 pm

Melvin has done significantly worse with more than Kap

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 28, 2023 at 7:41 pm

Not with the A’s. But Melvin may have had his full of fucked up FO/ownership situations, which would as they say militate against him coming to San Francisco.

  14. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 28, 2023 at 6:11 pm

I think we can all agree that 5 years into the Farhan regime, a complete team cratering the last 2 months of the season plus multiple rumors floating about season-long bad juju in the clubhouse is not what we would have expected 5 years ago. If this were happening in NY, Boston, Chicago, LA, the press scrutiny would be off the charts and some radical change would be expected as soon as the door closes on the poor season…

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 28, 2023 at 6:26 pm

Jesus. This is starting to look like Mark Davis and Josh McDaniels. Drinking buddies who fiddle while their team goes to shit.

Fucking Farhan is saying “Let me start over! I’ll do better this time!” while he throws shade on Kapler? Yeah, I have no love lost for Gabe, but I defy ANY manager in the majors to get more out of this shit-show than what Gabe got. Does that buy him time? No, but FARHAN should be the one on the hot seat.

Building a team on 2 year deals never gets you anywhere. And fucking coke-head Greg is gonna side with Farhan while we pretend to go after big-name players.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 28, 2023 at 7:23 pm

i’ve said this since Day 1: Farhan and Gabe fool you with words. They say all the right things. They are both very bright. But boardroom bullshit doesn’t translate into success. We need a GM who can do something other than talk and dumpster dive

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 28, 2023 at 7:47 pm

Well, that’s the big problemo. Greggie will be enamored with Farhan and his talk about building through short-term deals, signing middling players, chasing big names till they bail, and the like.

It’s what we’ve gotten for the past 4 years.

It wasn’t until Johnson came out and said what he said about the payroll that this season proved to be a lost cause. Because that is a big reason why we sat on our thumbs at the deadline. Or even before the season began.

The Dodgers haven’t missed Zaidi at all.
The Phils are playing good ball and not crashing in September being managed by Kapler’s former bench coach.
Apparently, Brian Bannister was the guy pitchers were coming here to get them back on track. He left the club last week(?). Kind of strange he didn’t wait until the end of the year.

If the Giants are going to let anyone go, please start with Kai Correa.

    I’m hoping Bailey isn’t next year’s Villar.

I blame ownership the most, and I’m sticking with that.
We don’t really know how this organization is run, do we? There are something like 20+ limited partners, I believe, who are IMO in it just to say they own the Giants with cash they don’t know what else to do with, and may have little to do or interest in tactical or strategic management. Give me a one-owner situation where we know who is pulling the strings and who is not off somewhere hiding behind some flak like Baer.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 28, 2023 at 7:52 pm

Well, Greggie finally reared his head to say “we aren’t throwing money around” so the buck stops with him. He and daddy are the biggest shareholders, so the rest I’m sure are there for the crab sandos and free beer.

  19. xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 28, 2023 at 8:11 pm

Farhan rarely says anything believable except his previews of the minor leaguers about to be called up. He’s been honest there all season. Big fucking deal. Kap is an asshole whose desire to sound perspicacious shoves everything else into the background. Every press session now is self promotion: look at how his bullshit schtick improves, incrementally, every day. It’s like he’s weightlifting for an audience. Of course, you have to listen to both of those frauds at least some of the time to stay up to date, but don’t trust them.

Farhan can’t just start all over again. Too late. Let’s hope the smartest owners are on a small committee busy planning how to replace him and Kap. They’ll have to agree to raise the player payroll substantially to attract good replacements. Good. In the meantime, god knows what we’ll get in a lame duck 2024.

  20. PaulinAsia Banh Bao's avatar PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on September 28, 2023 at 8:31 pm

Yeah, 2024… On one hand, I’m looking forward to seeing if the team will give long leashes to *the kids* (Ramos, Matos, Luciano, et al), and I mean as set position players, not as platoonies. On the other hand, it’s hard to imagine Z and/or Kap changing their MO, so… maybe more of the same. Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kap dismissed as soon as the season is over. Z sounds like he’s running for cover and might need to blame someone. IMO, Kap’s constant niggling with the lineup and especially the overuse of openers are reasons enough to let him go. Let’s see if Z’s talk of changing things up actually happens. It starts with the offseason, where he has not exactly excelled in the past. I think Kap is first on the hot seat, but Z is right behind him. The team apparently lost 2 key coaches, offense and pitching. That’s not a good sign that all is well.

  21. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 28, 2023 at 8:37 pm

I’ve stood by Z since he got here, and am not going to dump on him now. Nor Kapler. As noted on KNBR . . .

“Two weeks ago, before a pivotal road trip, the Giants were 75-71 and had a 40% chance at reaching the postseason, per Fangraphs. Then they went 2-8 away from Oracle Park, extending a historically poor stretch of road play and falling out of the playoff race. They lost three of four in Coors Field and got swept in a two-game set in Arizona.”

You guys can “spin” this as being on Z and Kapler. Me? The players lost this between the lines, not Z or Kapler. Z provided a team to play meaningful baseball in September and potentially, beyond (playoffs). Anyway, that’s my take and I am standing by it.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 28, 2023 at 9:02 pm

But Blade, doesn’t that the logic neatly flip? Z didn’t provide enough to last past the middle of Sept. The players collectively failed because Z didn’t stock the roster, off-season or at the deadline.

  22. PaulinAsia Banh Bao's avatar PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on September 28, 2023 at 9:03 pm

Steve, you definitely have been in Z’s camp all along, even while occasionally bemoaning some aspects of the team’s struggles. I don’t think he’s in danger of getting canned, not with a bunch of youngsters perhaps starting to appear to make their mark. Although a year from now with similar results might be a different story. Yes, the players *lost this*, no question. They sucked the last 2 months of the season. But why? Because they’re not very good? Z brought ’em all in, so that’s on him. Or because they don’t like playing for Kap with the constant unset lineups, the openers, etc.? Combination of the two? Kap is the easier target. I think he’s gone.

It was very disappointing to see the team stand pat at the deadline. Then Greg’s comments about payroll pretty much killed the season for me. Well, that and all the shit play down the stretch.

From a critcal SI article right after the deadline: “Zaidi … also noted that given the return of Thairo Estrada and the success pitchers like Ryan Walker, Ross Stripling, and Sean Manaea have had, the Giants should be able to look internally for the help they need in the final two months of the season.”
