A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Who’s Going To Win?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 3, 2023

Obviously, the Braves look like huge favorites. Surprisingly they are only +315 at draftkings with Houston and LA right behind at +415. The longshots are the Dbacks and the Marlins at +3000 and +3500 respectively.

As we know all too well, even though it seems like 10 lifetimes ago, all you need to do to win the World Series is #gethot and #getclutch for a spell.

I might put a couple of Benjamins on the Rays +1000 and the Phillies +1300 just to have something to root for.

But truly, who knows? It’s baseball, just about anything can happen right now. It’s what puts this sport ahead of NBA and NFL for me.

What a choke job by the Rangers on Sunday. Lose 1-0 to Seattle, they lose the division and instead of getting a home field and rest, they had to immediately fly to Tampa and jump right into a wild card series. Does the home get all three games in this round at home??? That does not seem right…is this the same format from last year?

If I were to bet I would be betting a Braves-Rays World Series matchup….maybe I make that bet. Atlanta looks easily to me the clearest favorite and most complete team…

      12-1 odds…

Unlikely to watch much more baseball but it is interesting that couple guys Zaidi missed out on in FA market back after 2021 are big part of some other teams still playing.
Gausman starts game 1 for Toronto. in his 2 years there he’s started 62 games for ERA of 3.25. Not as good as he was first 3 months with SF in 2021, sure. But in front end of deal, he’s holding up his end.
Jorge Soler for Marlins, another team that struggles to hit, had 36 HRs .512 slugging and OPS of .853 as RF and DH. Career of up/down seasons, but when on adds a lot to equation.
    Both signed March 2022.

Seeing how Bochy does will be kinda fun. Texas spent like $850 mill these past couple seasons, but hey, lots of teams spent wildly and got nowhere. But they got relegated to the play-in game.

    And Belt plays on . . .

no play in game this year. It’s a 3 game series.

They change shit every year. Just waiting for the December World Series coming soon.

The Braves were just too good this year. How often does a team dominate like that and then just steamroll through the WS? They almost always get tight, play worse, get bounced.

A lot of times a long layoff does them in.
Idk if the new format mitigates that very much…

Much as i don’t really like ’em the D-Bags are an exciting team. They have speed, youth, and power. They are everything we are not.

I didn’t notice them till that last series and they were chasing everything down.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 3, 2023 at 1:35 pm

And near bottom of NL for team ERA, couple spots ahead of Reds and Rockies. Giants btw are 4th and 10th MLB overall per fangraphs.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 3, 2023 at 1:44 pm

AZ has 2 SPs, ala SF and a closer they added from Seattle who blew like 4 saves after deadline. Their pitching gave up 31 more HRs than their lineup hit, 10th NL. Even with Carroll and Walker.
Cool young team sure, they hit run and play D.
for all the “everything we are not” they won 5 more games than Giants.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 3, 2023 at 2:55 pm

And they are in the playoffs and we are not.

Gausman, meanwhile, picking up where he left off from his lone postseason start for the Giants.

AZ has like 6 young guys on their roster drafted in the same span that has gotten us Bailey.

So, Farhan gets an extension for drafting one guy and a whole lot of questions in 4+ years?

The pisser to me is how are you building a team when everyone is on a 2 year deal? And the guys he gets like Haniger and LaSuckka for the longer deals, suck. Both were coming off injuries and were injury-plagued. Imagine that. It’s the fuckingTrent Baalke story all over again.

NOW Farhan’s gonna go long term? Sorry, I’m not buying it.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 3, 2023 at 5:41 pm

Looks like we have Luciano and Schmitt too. The OFs? Not sure yet. But they’re all fast.

  14. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 3, 2023 at 3:48 pm

The AZ *only won 5 more games than us* is incredibly shortsighted. The point is, that team is set up to TAKE OFF for the next several years while we are back to wandering in the wilderness.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 3, 2023 at 4:07 pm

Everyone in NL is behind ATL and LA.. AZ finished 13 games behind them. And with all the SPs Dogs missed this season, their pitching is still better than AZ. As is Giants.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 3, 2023 at 4:26 pm

again, you are missing the point. AZ is stacked with youth that’s coming up and achieving NOW. They made the playoffs NOW. And with that type of youth they’re only going to get that much better going forward. They are light years ahead of us. Watch what happens next year.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 3, 2023 at 9:22 pm

Were the Giants ever favored in ANY playoff series? Nothing means squat now.

Fewer than 20,000 fans at the Tropicana to see Texas beat the team formerly known as the Devil Rays.

  17. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 3, 2023 at 6:06 pm

2 of the 3 are dbacks. Those fuckers in AZ are stacked for years to come. Where are our youngsters? We have nobody like they have.

Our young guys have all failed except for Bailey (kinda). I like his defense and we can only hope the .238 ave, ,285 OBP, and .644 OPS will get better. As fans he hit the sweet spot for his defense, and the timing that Bart was struggling.

If he was on another team we wouldn’t be looking at him as an up and coming player, he way we look at AZ or Atl young players. He will be 25 at the start of the year. He is less than a year younger than Soto and a year older than Corbin Carrol:(
I hope you all get to tell me I’m wrong next year:)

  19. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on October 3, 2023 at 6:57 pm

Speaking of Soto, we should trade for him!

  20. xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 3, 2023 at 7:14 pm

Longo and the kids. AZ so far tonight. What a sport. I think Luciano came on well once he got the chance. Schmitt will be a great defensive 3B. Harrison looks good. Winn, even Beck, look promising. Bailey’s a terrific catcher and a serviceable switch hitter. Sabol’s a valuable backup. Doval’s, well, Doval. I wouldn’t call the SF kids failures.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 3, 2023 at 7:38 pm

like, where’s our Carroll? Or Baltimore’s Henderson. Or Cinncy’s McClain. It goes on and on. There are dozens of young guns who came up and killed and we’re like “Schmitt played some pretty good D.” Fuck that. I was a Carroll and I want him RIGHT FUCKING NOW LOL

  21. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 3, 2023 at 7:36 pm

our young guys have failed….so far. They could develop obviously. But what’s maddening is that AZ has like 6 youngsters who came up and just started rocking it from Day 1. And they’re only going to get better.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 3, 2023 at 7:46 pm

Bailey Harrison and Winn haven’t failed. Doval hasn’t. Luciano hasn’t had a chance to fail.

      Old Longo’s team wins one!

  22. Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on October 3, 2023 at 7:47 pm

    Crap.

  23. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 3, 2023 at 9:31 pm

    What?

I wouldn’t go so far as to say our kids failed, just that they are 2-3 years behind other team’s picks in the same window. Like I said, we have Bailey and a lot of questions. They all have potential, but none of them look like 30/100 guys. Or even 20/80. Fucking 15/60 is a stretch.

Sure, Schmitt could be a power guy. Or he could be JR Phillips 2.0. Matos is never gonna hit over 18. Ramos? Who knows? Is Bishop ever gonna play? Matos is the only one that is at least exciting on defense. Merkle? Jesus. He’s a horror-show in the OF and a slappy white hitter.

I don’t know what the hell we are drafting for, but it sure isn’t right-handed power. Something this team has overlooked FOREVER. Can we find one fucking power hitting OFer?

  24. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 3, 2023 at 9:39 pm

Just saw the highlights. Longo killed it defensively.
