A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Astros Not Done By A Longshot

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 20, 2023

Two games today, 1 of them, again, starting at 2pm. WTF? Does MLB care that some people have to work? As of today, Texas seems like they’re in far more trouble than Philly. But I like that both series are turning into a battle. Although I’d be fine if Philly won today lol

A little shocked AZ got a win starting someone Inliterally had never heard of in Pfaadt and his Pfaadt 5.72 ERA. PHILLIES MAY HIT 12 homers today. Momentum as certainly swing against the Rangers. Must win today for the Rangers…

Phils under Ruben Amaro Jr. and Charlie Manuel won 102 games 2011, year after Ryan Howard struck out and they lost to Boch and boys. The Cards beat them that year and bottom fell out as RAJ admitted he hung onto players too long. They never finished above .500 nor got back into playoffs until 2022.
Here are win totals for 2012 and beyond: 81,73 (twice in row),63,71,66 in 2017.
80 and 81 under Kap, 28-32 in 2020 and 82 for Girardi but missed playoffs. 10 years in a row.
No wonder fans so fired up.

I don’t think any Giants fan would put Dusty over Bochy as manager, especially in post season. But, I do think Dusty has better team and Stros can knock Rangers out.
Have to look things up, but after Rangers under Ron Washington lost to SF and then STL in back to back WS, have they been in playoffs since? Tigers after 2012?
Other winners since then? Royals? Cubs? Look where Red Sox and Nationals are right now.

I attended an A’s PS loss to the tigers in 2013. Ticket cost $43.Scherzer started iirc.

Texas hasn’t been in playoffs since 2016, second year in a row Toronto had knocked them out after Wash had been fired mid 2014 after 67 win season. Won 88 and 95 games those 2 years post Wash.
since: 78,67,58,22-38 in 2020, 60 and 68. 6 losing years in row before this one of 90 Ws.

Baggarly knows a lot about Japanese culture. When he was very active on Twitter, he used to post his weekly Japanese flower arrangements and he’s written many first hand accounts about Japanese baseball. I can’t tell if that article in The Athletic is so compelling because of his broad knowledge or because his speculation is unusually intelligent. But it’s good.

where did I read they are after the Korean league hitter too and scouted him over there. Jung Hoo Lee, born in Japan, OF and 25 year old son of legendary former KBO MVP known as “Son of the Wind.”

How many time can we hear how aggressive Farhan will be pursuing a free agent? He said the same of Stanton, Harper, Judge, Correa, and Ohtani. Well, not yet on that one. He said he’d be aggressive at the trade deadline.

    AJ Pollack, come on down!

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 20, 2023 at 11:34 am

i’m hopeful that Farhan and, more importantly, ownership has come to their senses that they can’t keep trotting out this Brebbia Aisle bullshit every year. I think we were like 14th in team salary this year. That is a joke.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 20, 2023 at 12:14 pm

The reason I’m losing hope is because of how Farhan is still here while Kapler got the axe.

They should either re-up Farhan or cut him loose.

My fear is that keeping Farhan on a lame-duck term buys Greggie a year of diddling around for scraps while playing their usual game of juuuust missing the big names.

Farhan’s rookie class is fair-to-poor, the team struggles and fades, Farhan gets fired, and we back to square one with a regime change.

  7. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on October 20, 2023 at 11:36 am

I’d dump Farhan in a second for GM Kim Ng who turned the Marlins around from obscurity to a playoff spot this year with some solid pickups like Soler&Aarrez she actually makes trades that work and is now available..

Man they talk to Dusty in the dugout and next guy up for Rangers ties game up with HR.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 20, 2023 at 3:59 pm

3 pitches 3 hits off Verlander and Rangers take 4-2 lead. Double single mound visit 3 run HR

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 20, 2023 at 4:47 pm

Brouhaha!!!!! Dusty tossed. Abreu ejected. Garcia tossed. No warning. Garcia pegged in the shoulder after the 3 run homer and a shoving match ensued.

A fucked up deal for Texas losing Garcia.

  10. xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 20, 2023 at 4:50 pm

My sons convinced Dusty called the HBP. He romanticizes old school, as he thinks it was. Garcia shouldn’tve been tossed.

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 20, 2023 at 4:54 pm

Garcia and Maldonado have a history.

I don’t think Dusty’s gonna put another guy on base this late down 2. Terrible way to handle this by the umps. Completely fucked up.

  12. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 20, 2023 at 5:08 pm

Whoa. Altuve with 3 run HR off Bochy closer.

Line drive snagged by pinch runner Grae Kessinger at SS. Grandad Don played 12 years for Cubs plus few more elsewhere and never made postseason.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 20, 2023 at 5:25 pm

      Still alive too, age 81.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 20, 2023 at 6:07 pm

Yeah, remember Kessenger. Very light-hitting 2nd baseman iirc.

AZ with the ground attack. Chipping away for a 2 run lead in the 3rd.

Z has said *all the right things* about abandoning shopping in the Brebbia aisle, going back to giving longer contracts, trying to build an actual sustainable team. Guess he’ll have at least this off season and next season to do it. My main concern is that he doesn’t actually know how to do that…..

If you are gonna use pen guy for opener you need few behind him. Phil’s scored off 4 of them in a row.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 20, 2023 at 8:00 pm

        In 4 straight innings.

Gary Payton 2 standing next to Wemby on FT line lol. Kuminga put high arc to get hoop over him. Wemby has beautiful shot from perimeter. Amazing skill set for size and youth.

Kimbrel with his usual choke job he’s so trash 🗑️ he’s not even accepted at the dumps..
Blows the 5-3 lead immediately on a Thomas 💣
And now D-backs take the lead 6-5 run charged to Kimbrel of course!

  20. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on October 20, 2023 at 8:27 pm

Snakes take lead with 3 off Kimbrel in 8th, can they close it out?

  21. xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 20, 2023 at 8:37 pm

Schwarber’s power swing is like Sonny Liston’s left hook.

But DBacks hold on and make it very interesting. I like em.

Not happy Snakes pulled it out but you gotta admire that they fight. Thought this series was over. Not so much

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 21, 2023 at 8:45 am

Phils pen blew 2 games in a row. Kimbrel, gad. Manager getting lot of heat for having him in there at crunch time. Makes you wonder who they go to after SP and how deep Wheeler and Nola can go at this point in season.

Victor Wembyana is must see TV. He has small forward ball handling skills at 7-3 with nice touch from outside (legit 3 point range) and can block shots all over floor. Last night he sent two jumpers from Wiggins and Klay back and altered shots inside paint too. He’s really thin right now but very fluid player.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 21, 2023 at 11:49 am

Yeah, he looks like a complete player even as thin as he is. We didn’t bang him around much, but I see that happening when they play for real.

    Bonehead playing by D-Backs early.
1st they have Harper out easily at home with a good throw by the 2nd basemen then Carrol goes back to the bag on a ball hit up the middle ( 1st rule in little league a ball to the left of the SS you go to the right you stay) he could of scored on but only made it to 3rd and they don’t score at all..2-0 Phillies early on..

I’m expecting to hear “high drive” from this TBS announcer every time there’s a hard-hit fly to the outfield.

That most HRs in the PS stat they keep posting is hilarious. How about most HRs in the PS since mlb juiced the ball and doubled the number of PS games.
