A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

AZ vs The Bochys

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 25, 2023

Good for Arizona, they earned that. And if Philly couldn’t finish the job with 2 straight at home in front of those maniacs they certainly didn’t deserve to go to the World Series. As is now quite evident, the Dbacks are building an exciting young team that has both power and speed. They will add an SP or 2 and be a dominant force in our division for years to come.

The only thing that sucks is that it’s too bad MadBum fell apart the way he did. Imagine if we’d gotten to watch him pitch in this series, even coming out of the bullpen. Sadly, that was not meant to be.

NBA has started and I’m having trouble ramping up for that.

Bum should get a ring f they pull it off. Not that I was rooting you to lose money but that was a satisfying loss for Philly. Still frickin disturbed about the nIner a performance on MNF. Did not get a chance to seee the Flap’s take on Melvin but that was smartest choice. Matt Williams joining him?

I’m for team Boch. I’m hoping that Adolis García isn’t just an ALC version of Cody Ross, but continues on and has a monster WS.

i really don’t care who wins. It’d be nice to see Bochy win but it’s impossible to not like this AZ team, too. I guess Bochy winning is the better story, especially for around these parts.

GH, the team was saying Chick Correa or Alyssa Snacks Whatsherface, or Wotus. People with no experience as managers.

So, yeah, compared to what they were talking about, its a good hire.

As far as the series, yeah AZ is a fun team to watch. I didn’t really notice them till they drank our milkshake at rhe end of the season.

Phils seemed to live or die off HR, and got stifled at home by AZ pitching. Top 3 in lineup Schwarber Turner Harper 1-21 in last 2, Castellanos ended series 0-23 after HR in game 1. Expensive FAs all, $20 mil plus per season. Started playoffs 5-1 then swept 2 at home vs. AZ and then dropped 4 of 5.
AZ pen with 2 stellar outings with backs against wall-9 innings behind SPs, 0 runs 1 hit allowed. Sewald 4 shutout innings as closer.
In TA Phils fans couldn’t believe manager let Suarez pitch to Carroll 3rd time after he’d already been 2-2, and sure enough it cost them.

    OK, Melvin in.
He won’t do much different that Kapp unless they get some talent in here.
At least Melvin has a track record of being good with young players…

GS D and rebounding should be better with Draymond in there. Steph and others missing layups and blockouts hurt, and his silly foul #5 took himself off the floor. Off night for Wiggins too, but Moody looked great.
That’s something has to stick in back of Dunleavy’s mind. Moody isn’t a guy to have in there at crunch time but bigger roles/more minutes for him and Kuminga could be coming soon. At someone’s expense.

Thompson would be the easiest to move since he’s seemingly playing hard to get in the contract negotiations. And he could get us someone good.

honestly feel like Farhan did this whole song and dance just to make hiring Melvin look like the easiest best thing to do. Come on, interviewing a pregnant Nakken, Correa and Buster Posey’s roommate from college? LOL WTF was that? THen he turns to Melvin. Such an obvious play.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 25, 2023 at 10:37 am

      Posey’s roommate?

It has always seemed to me that Zaidi is overly methodical when making a move, so as quickly as this happened, I think it had to be in the works for some time now. unofficially of course.

During b-ball games on TNT they ran New Balance commercial with Cameron Brink and her long braids alongside other ballers. I like Brink, though she’s still really thin. Her Mom has connection with Currys, from her college days at VA Tech where she roomed with Dell’s first wife Sonya, Steph’s mom and Brink’s godmother. Curry shows up at Maples for few games a year to watch her team, not the Men’s team.

Farhan extended to 2026. He gets his re-do.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on October 25, 2023 at 11:02 am

So I’m assuming Melvin will get the same deal in years?

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 25, 2023 at 12:00 pm

As Giants themselves recently have shown, the length of a deal is a flexible term.

  11. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on October 25, 2023 at 11:00 am

Yeah 3B coach Mark Hallberg was Posey’s roommate in college Chuck .
D-backs relievers Thompson&Ginkel were both like 22nd round picks starting out that’s like 675 picks that’s crazy cause they pitched so incredibly great along with Closer Sewald slamming the door on a pathetic hitting Phillies team at home to win those last 2 games and shut those wild fans into meek spectator like when Crawford hit that Grandslam against the Pirates in the one and done playoff game and the fans slumped in their seats knowing they were toast!

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 25, 2023 at 11:34 am

Sewald was deadline deal AZ made with M’s. Looking at BR page he had 3 pretty good years there. Why would Seattle, who wound up missing playoffs in last week, do that?

  12. xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 25, 2023 at 11:31 am

Everything has been orchestrated beginning with the sacrifice of Kapler on Willie Mac day. Farhan you can stay but we’ve picked our new manager. We’ll spend this winter, and during the season if necessary. You’ll rebuild the roster, with our approval.

I can only hope they added: Buster’s the exec committee point person.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 25, 2023 at 1:16 pm

Well, Farhan and Melvin go back to their A’s days. Greggie may control the purse strings, but I don’t think he’s wallowing around in manager choices. That’s way beneath his pay grade.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 25, 2023 at 2:23 pm

Buster interviewed Melvin. They probably know each other well. Buster didn’t move his family back to the Bay Area just to enjoy the tax burdens. Greg is chmn of the board. He’s more Larry Baer’s kind of exec. Real estate and IP rights and PR probably dominate his time.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 25, 2023 at 3:05 pm

Melvin said on radio he’d never talked before to Posey before the other day.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 25, 2023 at 3:49 pm

Huh! That’s hard to believe. I talked to Bob Melvin one evening on College Ave. in Oakland. You’d think all those transbay games, . . . But I may be wrong about everything else, too.

Baggarly tweet: Farhan’s success recruiting Melvin may have saved his own job. Good point.

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 26, 2023 at 8:55 am

From a PR perspective it would have been a disaster to get someone like Wallberg or Correa.

Not that anything will matter unless this team actually signs some players from the Soto aisle rather than the Brebbia aisle.

I mean some of the rookies show some promise, but nothing like anything AZ or Cincy has.

Glad the Dbacks took care of Phills and their idiot fans. Let those fans stew for a second season in a row. Meanwhile, I assume Melvin wouldn’t agree to sign up unless he had assurances Farhan would be there for the length of his deal. I find it weird that San Diego didn’t press for some compensation for essentially handing Melvin to the Giants…

I did a post on all the draft picks a while back from the Shanny regime, and their most successful round is the 5th. Which is unreal. Seven years of drafts have netted:

1st round pick starters – 2 – Bosa, Aiyuk (McGlinchey starting for Denver)
      2nd round pick starters – 2 – Banks, Deebo
3rd round pick starters – 2 – Fred Warner, Nick Moody
      4th round pick starters – 2 – Burford, Wishnowski
5th round pick starters – 4 – Kittle, McKivitz, Greenlaw, Hufanga (honorable mention DJ Reed)
      6th round pick starters – 1 – Mitchell
7th round pick starters – 2 – Purdy, Bell (honorable mention to Jauan Jennings and DJ Jones)

Without the lower-round finds, this team would be dog meat. With better early drafts, this team would be unbeatable.

Kuminga (round 1 #7) and Moody (round 1 #14) from 2021 draft have bright futures and can contribute right now.

You think getting some production off the bench is what they wanted out of a 7th and 14th Rd pick? That’s crazy

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 26, 2023 at 3:43 pm

        Pick not Rd

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 26, 2023 at 7:26 pm

First off, Moody, just now 21, was not gonna walk in and take Steph or Klay’s spot and send them to bench, right?
Second, Kuminga is also 21. Did you expect him to start right away? guarantee you Warriors didn’t. They knew what they were doing and these 2 have worked out fine.

A fair question is why do the Dubs draft guys not ready to play? We played a 2 way player in the 1st game of the season. Unreal! I bet we are the only team in the NBA that did that. Where is our 1st rounder? oh yaya. Not NBA ready:(
This a Dunleavy quote…“Having been around the league a long time,” Dunleavy told reporters. “I would never draft someone expecting them to play right away.”
    WTF?

Re: Greggie and his break-even comment, I’ve often wondered if the decision makers in ownership and the FO pay any attention to fan opinions. I mean, beyond Sabean’s lunatic fringe statement. Or maybe that’s how they all view the fans, as know-nothing lunatics. Some certainly are. But not here at the Flap. I wish Greggie would check in here now and then. Gotta think that even though Z’s contract is good for another few years, he’s feeling the heat. 2023 could turn out to be “make it or break it”, starting with this off-season. Honestly, I don’t really have much faith in that (in Z, actually), and if I was a bettin’ man, I’d bet if next year ends similarly to this year, Z’s contract won’t see its intended duration. To me, the glimmer of hope comes from increased involvement by Buster. Time will tell.

Hey, I’m in the US , after 4 years of not. In Phoenix now. Have a friends’ reunion in Joshua Tree at a desert homestay next week, then a week after that a big family (cousins) reunion in Palm Springs. I’ll end up in SF again for a few days at the end of the trip, end of November, flying back to Saigon from SFO. Maybe if anyone’s around and willing, we could meet up at a bar somewhere in the city or peninsula…
