A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Luciano with another bomb this weekend. He’s only hitting .237 but he started out hitting shit so temper that percentage. He’s probably your starting shortstop. Everyone cool with that? I guess if Ahmed is the other option then we’re all quite cool with it. If he can’t though why not bring Schmitt up? He and Chap would lock down that side of the infield even if he can’t hit…..

Luciano has got to be the every day short…sink or swim…

You have to be given #35 to be considered the official SS of the Giants…

  3. Winder's avatar Winder said, on March 25, 2024 at 8:52 am

It’s nice to have options at SS especially good defensive ones. Errors are like penalties in football they will kill you every time. Really looking forward to this season.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on March 25, 2024 at 8:54 am

      Meant to say turnovers.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on March 25, 2024 at 8:58 am

Yeah, it’s both. Mental errors are like penalties and physical ones are like turnovers.

      Something like that.

Whoever they play at short, it’s hard to imagine they’ll be worse than Crawford et al last year.

Hope they hire him as a coach or a PR person he’s good for SF baseball.

Some years back, I got to the ballpark early and saw Pablo in a uni being escorted by PR people toward the entrance to that members only club behind the RF wall. Security guy told me that there was a 2012 WS themed party going on up there. The high-rollers apparently wanted to meet Pablo.

would SF keep Luciano and Fitz? And Ahmed? Saw column by Bryan Murphy that valued Luciano over Fitz, reason being Melvin isn’t playing platoony ball like last year (with bevy of PHs and defensive position moves) and has set group of regulars at most every position.

Depending on how ready Snell (or Cobb) is, I think Melvin said something about having to be flexible at start of season. I’d like for them to keep 14 hitters/12 pitchers but I guess that’s unrealistic.

Good news for Stanford men’s b-ball hiring Kyle Smith away from Wazzu. Has local roots from being assistant at St. Mary’s and head coach at USF, and had good season at Wazzu this year.

He has lot of rebuilding to do, as guys left program in droves once Haase was fired. Btw 4 of those including 2 top freshmen guards and 7 footer Raynaud, plus graduation they lose top 8 players. While heading to loaded ACC, lot tougher league than Pac 12 was this year. Good luck!

Haven’t seen much of spring. How is Fitz doing? Is he solid defensively? Hitting I guess is a pipe dream out of him.

But really, Luciano and Matos have to be the starters. Why trot out the oldsters? Haven’t we seen enuff of that shit over the last 6 seasons?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on March 25, 2024 at 5:45 pm

ST he’s 9-42, hitting .214 with 21 Ks. Has ton of walks, OB is over .400.

Last year btw Richmond and Sac he hit 22 HRs and stole 32 bags. Also struck out 133 times in 483 ABs.

  12. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 25, 2024 at 5:13 pm

    highly doubt they keep Ahmed…..

Some BS I copied and pasted:

The San Francisco Giants did a ton of work to their roster this offseason. While Jung Hoo Lee, Matt Chapman and Jorge Soler should provide an offensive boost, manager Bob Melvin’s club could still use more power. Might first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays be a viable midseason trade target?

Jim Bowden of The Athletic listed Guerrero landing by the Bay as one of his predictions for the 2024 season. This was just part of the chaos he’s predicting for the July 30 trade deadline. “The July 30 trade deadline is wild and crazy as first basemen dominate the news: The Mets trade Pete Alonso to the Cubs, the Cardinals trade Paul Goldschmidt to the Astros (Houston upgrades from a declining José Abreu) and the Blue Jays trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (and his additional year of team control) to the Giants,” he said on March 25.

    • James's avatar James said, on March 25, 2024 at 7:50 pm

B/R page lists Craw’s weight as 223, number his BA couldn’t reach. Minus him and Joc, plus Chapman and legit CF improves D. Pitching should be lot better minus openers and Wood and Stripling, and dead weight contracts of Haniger and DeSclafani no longer a burden.

Ready for Thursday and 4 with Padres.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on March 26, 2024 at 12:18 pm

Pretty sure Craw still has some value but he reminds me of a boxer who just won’t retire. I hope he has a great year.

mmm yeah those kind of fighters hard to watch. Used to catch Boxing from Olympic in LA w Jimmy Lennon on weekends. All those great young Hispanic fighters sometimes matched up w old vet guys on way down. George Raft “Scrap Iron” Johnson lasted 10 w young Joe Frazier, May of 1967. Took hella beating but never went down.

Screaming comeback LD off Howard’s shoulder, looks like a bad bruise. But did you see Chapman’s play on the deflection? Every week he makes a play that could be a good 3B’s best of the season.

  33. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on March 26, 2024 at 6:27 pm

I’m not one to dwell on the past, count me in as feeling positive about the team heading into the season…. But I must say, sentimentality surfaces seeing Pablo apparently gone after this, as it did watching Craw sign with St. Louis. Pablo.. we’ve been watching him for much of the last 15 years. One of my all-time favorite Giants. Got to let it go, but it makes me kinda sad. That’s how powerful those 3 in 5 were….

  38. Delbert E Davis's avatar Delbert E Davis said, on March 26, 2024 at 10:25 pm

I normally wouldn’t give a shit about the exhibition bay bridge series, but they said the last Pablo game! That’s what got me out there, he was the first player I latched on to as an adult. And I know that sounds crazy, but I spent my early 20s in the Army, so that’s where I grew up. So after a got out, he was the first Giant I was a fan of. So, it makes me sad that he’s done.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on March 26, 2024 at 11:08 pm

Nothing crazy about that. I’ve gone to racetracks to say goodbye to retiring horses.
