ZZZZZzzzzzz……
Oh baby, that one got ugly early. It started with Lee not seeing the first fly ball of the game and ended with me turning the game off some time in the 6th inning.
Low batting average alert: some of these guys are starting to go really really low. Yaz: .071. Chappy: .189. Soler: .212. Estrada: .171. Lee: .200.
And they could go even lower with Webby pitching. He’s not known for run support.
Maybe offense gets rolling a bit today vs. Pads young SP Waldron.
Made debut last summer 6 starts 41 innings 9 HRs allowed ERA 4.35.
One start this year vs. STL lasted 4 innings 9 hits 1 HR 4 runs allowed.
Wonder if Melvin shakes up lineup a bit. Lee off to rough start, OB of .268, scored 2 runs in 9 games. Last 5 3-21. Not lot going on behind him except for Conforto.
Tough loss yesterday, but nice to see some old names like Chi and Lisle posting again.
I know Roupp just pitched yesterday, but I hope he can go again today. I’m liking that NC kid.
So much for 88 wins. Being full of hope is the main reason I love ST and that just seeing baseball again brings the kid right out of me. But so far I mostly see weak sauce.
april 6 1924 born day of wonderful tenor sax player Charlie Rouse, who passed November 30 1988. Long time associate of Thelonious Monk, from 1959-1970, those Riverside recordings w Monk were fantastic (personal fav Monk in Italy) as were many of the Columbia ones that followed. He appeared in couple of documentaries on Monk’s life w producer Orrin Keepnews and I remember one segment where he said that Monk liked to do every tune for LP in one take, so you had to get it right the first time, cause if you made a mistake you had live with it rest of your life.
Later he did nice recording for Verve in 1985 w Kenny Barron Buster Williams and Ben Riley under group name Sphere, titled “Bird Songs”. Wonderful versions of I Didn’t Know What Time it Was and Bird fav of mine, Quasimodo.
Willedav, Reading this blog daily is like taking a double major: Baseball & JAZZ!
In Oct 1988, I attended Charlie Rouse’s last concert: Bimbos in North Beach. I was still living in Montreal then but visiting SF doing some gigs. I can’t remember how it happened exactly (maybe because I attended alone) but I ended up being seated at a table with Orrin Keepnews! What a thrilling night all around! AND .. Don Cherry was on trumpet!! I didn’t know Charlie was ill with lung cancer (he didn’t sound like it) .. he passed a month later.
Great story Lisle, thanks. Yesterday before giants game heard Rouse recorded with bari sax guy Sahib Shihab, Oscar Pettitford tune Bohemia After Dark, tremendous song.
In NC they have been doing murals of musicians born in the state (Coltrane, Max Roach, Monk etc). Last week coming home from some medical stuff at Duke, we checked out the one for Monk in Rocky Mount (awesome). We have visited the Max Roach one in Elisabeth City and although I haven’t been to the one for Trane yet, I did check out the statue for him in High Point when I was up that way seeing some friends play in Greensboro. Great stuff.
Independence Man! Literally, 2 days ago I was deep in conversation about the murals in NC. My friend is in the process of setting up a Jazz Museum/Archive/Roadside attraction type thing in Independence, CA. And, he is in touch with the NC muralist to a create a Nina Simone portrait on the side of his building there.
The two that I’ve seen are pretty incredible. He did do one for Nina Simone here, but it’s a good 6 hours from me, so it may be a while before I check it out. Here’s a link to the Murals Trail. NC Musician Murals Trail | NC DNCR
Man, seeing Slater out there on the roster pisses me off. Yaz is right there on the edge of uselessness. I’d rather have the younger guys trying to figure shit out rather than the same old same old.
With ya big time on those two, Chuck. What seems to happen every year is Yaz goes on a little hot streak and Slater hits one 450 feet and it keeps them hangin on. Why can’t Z be a man about it and set them free?
Gotta think the Red Sox would have to trade for Yaz, if nothing else just for the PR.
Couldn’t agree more.
Agreed many times over.
How can you propose to have a playoff competitive team with journeymen-at-best OFers like Slater and Yaz as regulars in the OF? They’ve proved their level of skill and availability over several seasons, and it’s not nearly good enough. Get Matos up and let him sink or swim. If he sinks, then keep working to find better — that’s why GM’s get the big bucks. Tired of this incessantly weak and un-athletic Giants OF…
Yeah I’m with you Chuck&Loo Slater&Yaz are past their milk expiration dates they have soured on me bigtime. Get both Matos and Luciano up here now! Matos RF/Lee CF/ Conforto LF works for me the best!
Also I would like to see Roupp as the #5 Starter he was a starter in the minors and had great numbers compared to Winn’s stats, who might be better off in the BP for now
I’ve seen the Reds pull off a double steal in each of the last 2 games — and yet the Giants don’t have even one SB, the only team in MLB without one. How is that possible?
It would help stealing if they’d get on base.
Took quick look at Sac stats for Luciano and Matos who have only been playing for a week.
Luciano 11-27, hitting over .400 2 doubles 0 HRs. But, 9 BBs vs. 10 Ks.
Matos 5-19 1 double 2 HRs 1 BB vs. 2 Ks.
Be interesting to see when these 2 get called up and what happens to whomever they replace. Maybe if SPs go longer under Melvin he could get away with 12 pitchers and keep an extra bat.
I’ll believe it when I see it. Bochy was averse to that. Let alone Kapler.
Braves knock off DBax again 5-2. 3 HRs for ATL as AZ joins everyone else not named LA in N L West with under .500 record.
Get that run back, Giants.
Dang. Soler smoked one and they still can’t score. Interesting pitch mix w Waldron, 4 seamer at 93/knuckler mid 70s
Webb’s not getting the ground balls.
that’s better
Yep, Webb seems to be settling in nicely, efficient pitch count.
But why does this game feel like it’s 7–0, not 1-0?
yeah. Most of the bats are still hibernating. Or they’re dead.
Oh, Thairo
Nothing like being in a team slump and facing a knuckle baller.
Yaz already two Ks for 2 ABs today.
I don’t know what his ball-in-play rate is, but it has to suck. We’ve seen this now for 2+ seasons. Long stretches of utter offensive failure, cannot stop swinging at balls high in the zone, a few short stretches of power, then out for injury. No; good defense and being a LH hitter does not make up for this. IMO, he’s used up his capital as Yaz’s grandson. Matos, please…
Come on G’s, let’s tee off on this 7.20 muther!!
So much for the Giants tagging Waldron around he should of ended up throwing 6 shutout innings until Kim’s bone head error cost him an unearned run.
Giants bats staying anemic as Estrada totally swinging at ridiculously awful pitches to close out last threat.. WebbCained again?it’s seems like every time for the tough luck pitcher..
But this torch that I found must be lit up or it soon might be dimmed
So, make it one to tie this baby and one more for the win
WOW! Beautiful.
Thanks Yogi. The power of poetry!
The power of Johnny Mercer
Yes of course, the genius of JM, undoubtably … but you vibed MAGIC into this, our baseball context. I thank you again!
We get a break..
San Diego putting the E in Padres.
Chap man!
yaha Chapman comes through!
Alright the Giants put on alittle Speedo in Brito to take the lead! Come on Doval earn your paycheck and strike these mofo’s out!!
whew, thought we were heading for yet another Ofer RISP day
oval is dealing
We’ll take it.
Camilo!
Thank you very much, PadrEs.
Series win!
Yep, Finally. Time to “set ‘‘em up Joe”
Yeah send the sellout crowd happy 😃
Giants baseball ⚾️ always unpredictable..
YES!!! … and again, infinite thanks to Yogi and his brilliant rendition of the Johnny Mercer classic .. I’ve an ear worm now … totally loving it!!!
I though he said Bobby Mercer.
Cubbies destroy Dodgers, who lost 2 of 3 at Wrigley, that’s encouraging.
The Kings are playing the Nets right now, and I can’t decide if the garish Nets uniforms today are great or awful. They’re….something.
I was dozing off during the Giants game, and Kuiper startled me awake with the excitement in his voice when the Giants started rallying late. He was bringing it very impressively I must say.
Yeah Kuiper is really hysterical with his out of control screaming on balls that don’t even make it the warning track..
Kuiper’s love affair with saying “on the move” has carried over from last year…
There’s a good chance the Kings will be playing the Lakers in a play-in series. Oh boy, I get to watch James shoot 20 free throws in each game.
Kris Bryant opens up about the death threats he’s received since joining the Colorado Rockies (msn.com)
Jerry Grote passed away at age 81. His old teammates Jon Matlack and Jerry Koosman had nice things to say about him in MLBTR story. I’ll look for more in NYT obit
Best defensive catcher I ever saw…
