Another Torturous Win
What an ending! We got another close one that ended up the right way. Tonight we get the unveiling of Snell. Again, I am not super hot on this guy because he always seems he’s about a hair out of place of reverted back to #4 material. But if he’s remotely close to what he was last year he helps us a TON.
Eclipse day! I don’t really care about this I gotta be honest.
I cant remembr when but vaguely remember as a kid making one of those boxes to look at the eclipse but dont remember anything else if it happened was it partial yada yada. I guess we will get about 60-70% covering which is cool enough. I just want some warm spring weather finally. Very wet cold spring so far freezing our butts off at kids high school soccer games…a win is a win and one step closer to .500. How long of a leash on the 40 man do Yaz, Slater, and Ahmed have??? Luciano apparently raking so far in Sacto so that is a good sign. Hopefully he is back up soon and raking and Matos has to be up next 30 days…
Next scandal:
People selling fake eclipse glasses and countless morons suffering the consequences.
Are there any Braille stocks you can buy?
I remember the first time I saw a Braille edition of Playboy. Union hall in Alaska.
The centerfold had big bumps?
this was way back before low-cost implants
The eclipse? Won’t be the first time Arkansas is completely in the dark.
I hope Snell can go at least 5 innings today, the pen is pretty much rested. It might be time for Ahmed and Estrada to get a day off. Wouldn’t mind seeing a bus swap of Fitzgerald and Luciano for a couple of days and having Wilmer in the lineup.
yeah I noticed Wilmet is 8-9 for ABs so far while being one of few guys off to decent start.
Great first line, thanks for laugh.
Agree. (Orval Faubus comes to mind. Also KY alumni cabal: we bought him three seven foot kids and a bunch of top flight shooters/passers and we got this? He’s gone.)
I won’t be able to see the 15 to20% where I’m at. But, got the whole 2017 show. Totally worth it.
Fingers crossed on Snell.
I remember that one, I think. I cruised the road that runs above Berkeley/el Cerrito/Richmond and watched the light darken on the bay, the GG, the city skyline, Mt Tam. That was ok. My sunglasses are more dramatic than this one.
It was a good one, total eclipse.
The Snarkkettes traveled to Austin, TX to see their step-grandparents and the eclipse. Looks like it will be cloudy. But, they’re still having a nice time. Up here near Seattle, I’m just happy to see an un-eclipsed sun on occasion…
That shit is mighty rare these days…
Report from Austin.
The clouds parted and they saw the full eclipse. Looked pretty cool from vids and photos sent to us. I followed on NASA TV the various places in the US they had telescope TV set up to show it. Amazing how one sliver of the sun being visible lights up the world, and no sliver turns everything dark. Wacky and stunning 360 degree sunset as the areas outside of totality have some sunshine. Maybe a little dose of how big and awesome the universe is every so often might make humanity a little more humble and respectful of Earth, our home, but probably not…
Some might respect the earth more if there was any money in it for em.
Same weather south of Portland. It’s April and still in the 30’s at night and rainy.
Giants are getting ZERO production in RF between Yaz and Slater, one measly hit for Yaz (.063 avg) Slater no hits it’s pathetic.Yaz batting.avg 221 since 2022..wasted roster spots going off long ago reputations..I just can’t believe the Giants stick with them other then clubhouse presence?
And then theirs the dead last category in baseball of SB’s at ZERO.. The only 2 attempts were pickoffs of Lee&Conforto yikes 😱
Of course, the handful of Giants who might attempt a steal haven’t been on base very much.
Why isn’t Lee running? Even Fitzgerald yesterday.
Lee rarely stole in Korea despite great OBP. It’s not a skill he mastered even at that level. I don’t want him out becz of a broken pinkie.
Lee’s been on first 10 times. He was immediately picked off one of those times. I’m guessing not every one of the other 9 times was conducive to a steal attempt, maybe other runners ahead of him, the score etc. He’s not been much of a base stealer in general.
he was on base some 1600 times, stole 69 bases, got caught 23 times. Thats not far from Brandon Belt’s ratios.
yeah that’s true James the poll is still open after 10 games now who gets one!
In the mean time it’s Congo line as usual are waiting for Earl Weaver’s 3 run HR by Chapman,Soler are Conforto.
Can you name the last Giant to steal 50+ bases in a season?
And for extra credit can you name the one before him?
No one?
I’m going no one also
I just looked it up. Both were caught nearly 30% of the time and very likely cost the Giants some runs scored over the season.
Ha, not surprising.
and my answer to Loo’s question would be “no.”
I almost went with Jack Glasscock, who had 54 SBs in 1890.
I’m going to guess Billy North? And Brett Butler?
Correct (in reverse)
Next quiz:
Who thinks AlleyKat cheated?
I considered Bobby Bonds and Butler, dismissed them because 50 just seemed like a number that would have stuck with me. Totally forgot about North.
I got North and forgot Butler…
I got Butler and forgot North. (Butler and Bonds)
no big deal. Like the Curb finale. Now if they start talking about in-game betting ….

Sounds like me when I visit my mother…
Heh heh. That’s how they shoulda ended it.
I do remember when Bonds was stuck on 39 HR’s already had 40 plus steals but never hit that 40th HR with a week are so to play. Maybe pressed to hard? I think he would of been the 1st 40-40 guy with 1 more Bomb not sure?
He used to tell the story that he hit a home run in a rain-delayed game that didn’t go the required 5.5 that was cancelled and rescheduled. Not sure if that was true or not.
Remember he lied about his SB total on a Miller Lite commercial. Incredible that they aired it without fact checking him.
See further down…
Didn’t realize North walked more often than he struck out in those first 2 years with Giants. High OB, but only in that first season was he above average hitter (per OPS+).
Bio on B/R says he’s from Garfield HS in Seattle, school that has produced lot of good athletes. Driving around town with black man who managed store for our company (at mgmt conference there many years ago) and had grown up there, he pointed out an area renowned to be populated by Scandinavians, and said it was area to be avoided back in his day.
Matos watch: 5-24, batting .208 w .269 OB. 1 BB 2 Ks 1 double 2 HRs. Off day for RCs today.
just me, but Melvin seems like his lineup is very set/vet heavy. Fitz has had 1 start, the game where he bobbled first ball ever hit to him at SS.
While starters who pitch deep into games suggest that a smaller number of bullpen guys may be required, Melvin’s limited use of reserves and PHs helps counter that notion. Not sure if this should be decisive, but piling up a few lopsided losses can put a stress on the bullpen for which there isn’t an equivalent when it comes to a smaller set of bench players.
Yeah Willied,Melvin is old school like Bochy .Vets will have priority until they prove their through.
I originally thought Lee would get the 1st SB but I’m going with Estrada since both Lee&Fitzgerald are still learning the league and Melvin might keep them grounded on the bases for now..
my first thought was Butler and I didn’t have a second guess. Eclipse was stupid here in Palo Alto. I looked out the window at 11:17am, barely looked different.
Eclipse on the West Coast was pretty much a nothing-burger. Give or take 35% or so in the Bay Area. 20% or so in the PNW. That’s not enough coverage of the sun to make much difference in perceived light of the day…
He stole 461 in real life…
he even sounds like he’s lying about that number when he says it
Only 200 off!!!!! I’m sure his rainout story is bullshit as well.
We had about 80% here in the Outer Banks. The winds came up and you could feel it cool down.
Further Sac report shows Whisenhunt and Black were tagged for 6 runs each in less than 4 innings @ Reno.
Expect Yaz to wake up tonight and make you momentarily forget how bad he is…
Okert, AKA O-Krap, comes into the game for the Twins and quickly gives up a run, but Buxton makes a terrific diving catch, and the Twins and Dodgers are tied at two.
The game is already in the top of the 7th. Games just zippity-doo-da in this pitch clock baseball world.
Outman hits one out, man.
Yankees played their fastest game in 32 years earlier this evening. If you have any kind of trip to the ballpark, it’s barely worth the trouble…
This aggression will not stand, Outman!
Ohtani hits one out, man.
@Lisle
Found this out by accident but April 7 1938 drummer Pete La Roca Sims was born. Passed Nov 20 2012. I have CD of Basra under his name, w Joe Henderson Steve Kuhn Steve Swallow. He was also drummer for first 2 Joe Henderson Blue Note LPs as leader in early 60s, great recordings w Kenny Dorham, Page One (Blue Bossa and Recorda Me) and Our Thing. Just listened to Basra, really impressive.
One I still have on vinyl!
Hi James, maybe you saw me post this yesterday, but I will mention again (worth the redundancy) … Marshall Allen turns 100 next month (May 25)!! Found out today he is leading the Arkestra on a celebratory gig in Philly on the Friday, the May 24th. I’m looking into flights from Tucson to Philly. Also, Roy Haynes turned 99 last month. Can you imagine if someone could set up a duo performance? WOW!!!
I did see your post, Lisle, and hope you find that flight. Sounds like a great celebration well worth the effort to get there. Those two are *seriously* defying the odds for jazz musicians from those days.
hey Willedav, yes, I remember that album. Whatta band, uh? Steve Kuhn, a lesser known GIANT of the music, imho. Plus, the amazing Steve Swallow (man, I loved his upright bass playing, especially the recorded sound he got those Jimmy Guiffre discs). I believe Pete was also drummer in Sonny Rollins quartet that my old boss Paul Bley was pianist, with Henry Grimes on bass. Btw, ordered the Bill Harrison book last nite, can’t wait for it too arrive!
whoa Rich Aurelia is back on the pregame? I heard he was in limbo after he slammed that smarmy Latino talking head against a wall last year and told him not to act like an asshole on camera again. Maybe that guy got the boot.
The dude with the Charles Nelson Reilly glasses? Or was it Brett Somers?
yeah. The black glasses. Ramirez I think.
They got into a fight? Carol Channing wouldn’t stand a chance.
not much of a fight. Aurelia must’ve terrified him.
No $$ on it but I hope Purdue takes down UConn. Coach Hurley isn’t quite as annoying as Geno, but that’s a low bar. He’s put together another great team though.
He’s such a whiny bitch. Can’t stand ’em…
I have no idea what just happened based on Miller’s play by play. Maybe it’s me…
Speaking of whiny bitch I hope that douchebag Ramirez( who offers nothing and really ticks off Richie who called him out “Never do that again ever, as he did a lap around him and Laura Britt)is never on a postgame show again and same goes with the dumbass adolescent baby crew on Sunday Funday show which I didn’t see on there yesterday thank god, somebody wised up , sure the low ratings and dumped it..
So that’s what stolen bases look like.
And more dispiritingly what waiting for a pitcher with suspect command to hang himself looks like . . . and a pitcher not breaking for first on a grounder to the right side, and a blown rundown with the catcher whiffing on the tag play.
And wasting a leadoff double.
the stupidly protracted rundown and weak play at the plate (late, badly executed) pissed me off.
Giants defense — atrocious…
and then Chapman on D gives some reason for optimism.
I’m with miller and Kruk–Twain’s Conn. Yankee in King Arthur’s Court shaped my childhood vision of total eclipses. Maybe that’s why today I find mass excitement about the event a bit puerile. Be-knighted. OTOH, the unforeseen consequences of military technology at the end of the book seem farsighted.
Five to one, baby…
roupp it up
That is an awesome clip, Milo Hamilton call of Aaron’s 715. Love Dodger IF with glove up as he goes by.
nice at bat by Wade Jr
Giants playing like a conglomeration of individuals, not a team. Need to get their act together soon or even the last wild card might be a stretch. Lack of speed looks like a real problem…
Lee to Chapman for the out. Even in worst games, ….
Games like this staying awake is a real problem…
Look at the bright side Loo,another late game tomorrow to really test your sleeping habits with this phenomenal Giants hitting attack!
Baggarly reports that the usher in the section in front of him is working feverishly to shut down fans attempting to start the wave. Those are field box behind the plate seats, very expensive. (Never really liked them myself; no overview.) Must be bored distracted tech bros and friends sharing mdma and ketamine and talking trash about the woke mind virus. Giants need to fumigate the area, refund season ticketers, slash prices, kids half off, etc. Start anew.
When I want to see ugly, I usually just look in the mirror. Yeesh, this is ugly.
How prophetic, Tent’s ERA is the same as the name of his next employer!
It’ll be nice to have some help…
Hilarious!!!
Dang, the Nats beat the Snell out of us.
😄Just got that…
Reynolds, Joe and Bart lead Pirates to victory!
giants RISP now 16-for-81
Not too jazzy, BB…
Loo, I like to spell Jazz with as few ‘Z’s as possible.
On to happier things. Great comment on an article about a murder (yawn) in Brooklyn yesterday:
“Most of Brooklyn is a dangerous place especially if the locals discover you are from out of town. As a rule, Brooklyn people are surly, rude and dangerous with little regard for humanity.”
Hey Loo, I put my response to your Bklyn comment in the wrong spot .. I’m outta practice.
that’s how I remember Park Slope in the early 70’s, (I lived @ 7th & Garfield) coming home from gigs with my bass at 3am, bars letting out … “Hey, youse wid da big geeetaarr .. c’mere, I wanna talk t’ya ..”
It may have changed a little…
https://tinyurl.com/ymny6uau
yeah, it sure has .. I was back there about 15 yrs ago and at that time the health food store (I think @ 7th & 7th) that had just opened way back when as a tiny store front, took up the entire block! Baby strollers on parade!
