Concerning Statistics
Last year we were slow and weak. That bothered me greatly. You can’t be both and have a great year. For certain, if you are slow and weak you’ll be the most boring team in the league. That is not even debatable.
I haven’t checked the stats on this but it just feels like HR’s are down across baseball up to this point in the season. Would love it if someone could research that for me. We have 10 bombs this season which puts us at 14th place in MLB along with some other very good team (the Rangers, the Cubs, for instance). But we are DEAD LAST in the SB department. In fact, SF is tied with Flap Nation in that category. We both have 0 stolen bases this season.
I don’t mind being slow. But if SF is gonna be tied with us Flappers for last in the league it would be nice if we were blasting the ball out of the park with a little more frequency.
I’m not worried about Snell, it’s not like he got bombed.
Luciano and Matos would dramatically in team the team speed!!! The east coast and Midwest have also been much colder than normal and that has to have an effect on homers regionally so far.
I’m no fan of the wave, but if fans watching a debacle in the late innings break one out, I’m not going to rip ’em. Giants need to bring good play to the game, else these days fans paying a boatload aren’t necessarily going to just sit there and keep scorecards. Guaranteed Larry Baer is overjoyed their waveing butts are in the seats on a Monday night vs. the sucky Nats rather than not at all…
I think a lot of what people do (like the wave) is out of boredom.
I just applied for a job at Victoria’s Secret…
Lingerie model?
In today’s world it’s actually possible!
I know Lee isn’t the problem and there is going to be a learning curve for him, but it seemed to me a lot of his early hits were up the middle. Teams seem to have caught on to that and are playing their SS close to 2B. Someone that has high bat-to-ball skills should be able to adjust and shoot the ball were they ain’t.
attendance last night was about 25,000, which is not bad these days for a chilly Monday night. Snell’s first game though. He got the largest ovation when introduced on opening day. My son said he was slightly appalled. Who are these virtual fans? (He didn’t use those words.) My friend in LA, who about once a month gave me season tickets she’d owned since 2000, let them go this past winter, as did her partner in the investment, who attended her half of the home games. When they were kids they took the bus across town to sit bundled up in the candlestick bleachers at night.
Tech money has screwed the City. It fuels everything from right wing recalls to virtual fans trying figure out how to start the wave. They’ll do some research, devise some algorithms, and keep at it. Maybe they’ll hire coaches. They sure as shit won’t be watching to see if Lee is really learning to lace mlb caliber LDs down the LF line. Or if he’s improving his read of first move on the mound.
Lee’s base running was good, and notably exciting, last night.
Giants took 2 of 3 from Padres and allowed 8 runs total. Hopefully better pitching and d tonight. dunno about HRs vs. last year but Phils have only hit 1 more HR than Giants so far and SF has more XBHs than they do.
We don’t pitch we don’t win.
This harkens back to Bochy riding the vets until they were batting .052.
Matos and Ramos have no business being down in AAA while (S)Later and Yaz stink up the joint. The longer this goes on, the more frustrating it gets. Trade Yaz and DFA Slater. Trade him for bag of balls and a fungo bat.
The thing about Yaz and Slater is that this is nothing new. These guys have been spinning wheels and getting hurt and striking out a ton (Yaz) for two years. Right field is normally a power/RBI position in the Bigs. So, you can’t have a RF platoon situation be an offensive black hole for very long, it’s very destructive to an offense…
Pitchers probably have a book on both Yaz and Slater. I guess every once in a while they will leave a fat one over the plate otherwise they will continue to chase balls they can’t hit. There are a whole lot of players just like that.
Throw a high fastball to Yaz and he’ll swing through it every time. Everybody knows it…
To me it’s time to get Ramos up here for his last chance to impress. He’s 24 getting out of his high draft pick warranted like what happened to Bart.He is hitting the “piss off the ball”with the River Cats with exit speeds of 109&103 with a HR the other night at 103 mph .Only 4 SF Giants have hit balls that hard this year. Ramos Fizz,Lucky Luciano,& Matos all supply the extra bat speed and wtf might even end a Flapper winning the SB crown 👑 in futility..
It’s time to get rid of extra geriatric players in Slater,Yaz as well as Ahmed ( though his glove work isn’t bad and they probably will keep him until Luciano takes over for good!)but his power and bat speed plays now and needs to be up “Pronto Tonto”over weakling Ahmed..
Should go with an outfield of Conforto LF, Lee CF, Matos/Ramos RF interchangeable just play the hot hand between them.are whoever needs a dayoff play them both..Send a pitcher back down, keep Fitzgerald as infield/ OF depth as well..
that’s been my view on Ramos/Matos for a while. Yaz plays an excellent RF at China Basin. We might lose some of that. But at the plate the two kids can’t be much worse than the two fading, never all that great in their prime, vets. One of them may cut loose. If they both really can’t hit, they’ll just be doing essentially what Yaz and Slater would’ve done, and a serious hole in the roster will become unavoidably obvious.
I understood getting Ahmed for Crawfish, but as the backup not the starter. If Fizzgerald is an error machine, then why is he even in the mix? Luciano needs to play all the time and be done with this anemic bullshit. Yeah, they may not hit as well, but at least they are gonna be out there getting reps and experience.
These draft picks under Farhan have been nothing but underwhelming. Bailey is playing his way behind Murph at this point so fish or cut bait. Luciano has ben the heir apparent for quite a while now. Sure, he’s on;y 22, but get him out there!
This ‘too early’ shit is just that. Bart wasn’t exactly handled great, but he did nothing to warrant sticking around. After years and years of spinning his wheels, he never took the reins and ran with it.
Our best draft pick in the last 11 seasons is Webb. One star player. 2 regimes of ineptitude. I get it’s hard to draft in baseball, but this farm system languishes at the bottom of the heap yet again.
Giants drafted Bryan Reynolds in 2018. 16 bWAR.
Your boy Speier was 20 in ’71…
Nice draft, bad trade.
Where’s Edwin Starr when you need him? Or Mike Leake for that matter.
It’s not just the high fastballs . . . the utter lack of timing on breaking pitches in the zone makes Yaz shout at the TV, impossible to watch.
But for all of the grief Yaz and Slater get for sucking right now, I think they really do intend a pretty strict platoon with them now that Lee is in CF. A composite of their splits last year adds up to numbers I’d be ok with. In 383 ABs:
.288/.361/.439 800 OPS
.243/.353/.478 831 OPS
16 HR
Those splits track with their career numbers. Heck, they even stole 4 bases!
Their ability to stay healthy is another matter.
383 ABs combined? If so, come now. You don’t think they’re planning a four or five man platoon out there this year, do you? That’s not gonna be good for either Ramos or Matos. And do we really want Lamonte’s knee to blow out again?
No, I think it’s a two man platoon, and they’re crossing their fingers that Slater hits the IL before Yaz does.
Both of them are consistently good hitters when they don’t have to face same side pitching.
Bernie Carbo never got any grief. In the good old days, he was celebrated for his unusual ability to hit RHers exclusively.
Good point re: Giants plan (and Bernie Carbo cool hitter). Composite .800 OPS numbers as well. a figure Matos or Ramos would likely be hard pressed to reach trying to hit ML pitching and playing at home in the O. Less LaMonte in OF the better but he is still hitting and getting on base.
Let Matos/Ramos get comfy in the hitter friendly Coast League (currently in its second week fwiw), get batting eye and stroke going and then see what happens.
melvin can’t pull and reinsert Yaz and S as opp pitchers change. Your theoretical composite OPS for last year is based on their best ABs. In reality, they both had lackluster OPS well under .800 last year. They’ll do worse this year.
If they stick with a strict platoon, they’ll see a much lower percentage of their ABs against same side pitchers than last year. Most of the pinch hitting will happen later in the game and there’s no guarantee that a manager will pull a late inning BP guy — or even be able to — just to get the match up advantage against Yaz or Slater. They’ve been consistently good against opposite side pitchers their entire careers, but it does feel pretty tenuous.
If Matos or Ramos put up a 775 OPS, I’d be thrilled.
if they put up a combined .775 OPS they’d do better than Yaz and Slater last year. Slater’s was .748. And Y and S will be worse this year. They’re on the skids.
I’d be thrilled if Matos or Ramos put up a 748 OPS.
I’d be astonished if either Yaz or Slater could.
They’ve certainly looked terrible early in 24.
well I was rooting for Yaz when the ump gave him a break or two and he took advantage last inning.
Yaz has been bad for a long while now. Slater was never good to begin with. Brass doesn’t want to bring up a young kid while whole team is struggling.
“Jerry Gallo? Jerry Gallo’s dead.” “I’m aware of that.” “I’m Jerry Callo. With a C!”
Great as Pesci was in that movie, I thought he looked way too old for Marisa Tomei….
ever seen Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead? Helluva entertaining movie.
I haven’t, Xoot…
good noirish thriller, Lumet’s last movie, great cast, including Tomei.
The Giants have had trouble getting runners into scoring position, too.
Lot of Nats don’t like high fastball from Harrison tonight.
Consecutive blown pick off plays. Bet that doesn’t happen too often.
The little things are costing the Giants. Wade doesn’t have Lester Hayes stick -‘em in his glove and he nails the base runner at 2nd for the 3rd out.Instead Abrams gets a shot and he blast a HR for the lead..
Our best weapon — the opponent’s error!
The rolling ball found the little opening in the barrier in front of the dugout. The Giants catch a break!
But….bullpen.
Giants must lead MLB in taking called third strikes right down the middle.
anyone else still awake? Anyone want to defend the Rogers brothers?
or conforto?
Or Chapman?
Keep going!
aw fuck it
meet the new team.
same as the old team.
top of the order did their job … then … wtf?
Hopefully Giants offense will come around and improve Burrell s hitting coach rep.
Right now, a couple of duck snorts into outfield would improve it…
Just an early bout of the June Swoon bug. Take a couple of greenies and call me in the morning.
What speed can do for a team is really shown by the Nats. Their team speed has killed the Giants in these first two games. The Giants are slow as molasses, and that is going to hurt them all year. They better start hitting homers, else they are in trouble on offense.
12 games in, they don’t look like a gelled team, but a conglomeration of dudes who came together late in ST and trying to find their way.
Team defense still sucks.
Speaking of sucking, how long does Tyler Rogers get to stay stinking up the Pen?
Very good story today on Jackson Holliday in The Athletic .. did not realize til reading he is Matt’s son.
Thanks, that was great.
Elsewhere in TA I noticed ML column with words “early season overreactions for each team” in it.
hmmnn 90% of season does remain to be played.
from another room, I just heard kuip on the pregame say: “a great example is last night bases loaded in the ninth nobody out.”
I’d completely blocked memory of those details. Funny how you deal with trauma.
LMFAO! Thanks Xoot!!
It can be a blessing, I can attest to that.
Beat writers twitter blowing up over 2nd inning. SBs! hits w RISP! who are these guys?
Slater was fast enough to beat the throw on that two out IF hit. Not fast enough to steal second, though.
this is the first time I have ever watched Jordan Hicks throw…I had no idea he was black…lol!!! Good thing for local tv coverage to finally see him. I forgot about local tv on Monday to watch Snell but also had that bore of a ntl champ men’s game. But this game is showing us the importance of team speed…especially when you don’t have a lot of on base type of hitters…many of us have Ben preaching for the last 2-4 years of transforming our lineup into higher on base and speedy players, especially since it looks like we will consistently fail to bring in big time slugging free agents…
Whoa Baggs has story about California state senator Josh Becker proposing loophole should be closed re: Ohtani’s deferred $ contract that could potentially save him from paying $90 million in state taxes by only taking $2 million now.
“This is money earned here. It should be taxed here.” And of course it’s not pension or retirement account.
Restructured contract after that? couldn’t happen to a better bunch of bums.
oh. It’s a state pol trying to ask DC pols to do it. Not imminent.
Kruk “Not a comfortable at bat” after Hicks 99 mph fastball sails behind batter. Twin used to talk about hard throwing Bob Veale of old Pirates, who wore very thick glasses off playing field.
Nice job Wilmet , first pitch sac fly
And another RISP 2 out hit.
How about that.
Giants show some speed, score runs. Looks like a pretty sparse crowd today…
I would not be offended by the occasional Fitzgerald in RF Wilmer at 1B lineup.
Speaking of Concerning Stats, RCs report in MCC site notes Matos 3-21, Sabol 4-28, Schmitt 4-37.
Ramos with a huge day today
Ah, cool . Hopefully he is still in their plans.
The Doughy Fuck still at it…
I forgot, who’s the DF? Law?
Always liked the Law and Orta OF.
ahhh … a trip down memory lane … The Flap always comes up with the best nicknames for the stiffs! I forget, was DF your creation, Loo?
Sometimes, it seems like the Flap is a collection of comedy writers with a baseball problem.
Big.Flavor dubbed him TDF…
Roger that
Nuthin from nuthin leaves nuthin…
were truer words ever spoken?
Hicks is looking good.
Giants really needed that win.
They hit zero home runs for the entire homestand. That is lame…
copy that
