this was the pitfall of trying to be slick and dragging any signing out that far into spring training. One thing if it is a hitter but it takes a few weeks of live game action to get an arm ready. Farhan reaps what he sows. Ahmed OBP of .292 (pathetic) and .326 slugging. I’m pretty sure Luciano has better in him….Yaz OBP ,.282 and pathetic .138 BA and get this .138 slg. Matos clearly can outperform that. Slater only 12 at bats but one hit. Jesus Christ! Why taking a roster spot right now? Fitzgerald same # of at bats but producing at .462 OBP and .750 slugging…

Last season Snell got off to rough start w ERA at 6.00 in early going, then had 5 good starts where he allowed 9 runs in 28 innings. Then Pads roughed him up mid May for 6 earned and ERA was back up to 5.40.
Then he settled in and allowed 2 runs total in next 6 starts over 36 innings, and 2 runs in next start in 6 innings. Total of 4 runs in 42 innings, and ERA was back in low 3s. Melvin saw it, knows him and hopefully he can get things turned around as season progresses.
But Snellarama has a spring training last year and still sucked in April.
We’ve replaced the bore core with the snore core. It just baffles the fuck out of me these guys can sit there and say, “Yeah, let’s trot Yaz out there. Ahmed’s coming around.” and Slater’s “I’ll grow a beard and no one will recognize me” shit.
Matos as least deserves a call up as he’s at .346 / .424 / .712 / 1.136 with 4 HRs and 13 RBI.
April results I just don’t put lot of faith in. guys start out hot (or cold) and then things even out over course of season.

Willie, he looked good in April 22. Confident, competent behind the plate, feasting on mistake pitches at the plate. Then all of it including the confidence just vanished. I scarcely remember his powerless april last year.
Maybe as a pure backup with a chip on his shoulder he’ll put up some decent bench numbers for an entire season Beats the hell outta Sacramento.
yeah, he was even getting few walks and not striking out so much start of 2022. Had a good month later that year and wound up with 11 HRs. Never got off ground 2023. Bar is low for backup C, especially if D is good.

I read today where MLB baseball players, as a group, are now just 6% Black. Accordingly, it seems to me this every April 15 wearing of the 42 to celebrate Jackie Robinson is a bit of a cruel joke. There are many non-Caucasian players on MLB rosters, but the American Black player has all but disappeared. It’s an abject failure of MLB to fix this problem, and IMO the result is a reduced quality of game that we oldsters saw in the Golden Age of ’60s through ’70s. Great athletes from all over the US who could be playing MLB are instead shooting hoops and playing football, not baseball …
Little league is a rich white suburban game now. Baseball camps are a money-grabbing cash cow industry. Traveling teams, personal coaches for 10 year olds. Super-amped parents trying to create the next Mickey mantle. Kids are groomed from age 6 to find a position and stick to it. There aren’t any pick-up games at the local field like back in the day. It’s a dumb new world.

in LL the best player on a non all star team spends a lot of time at SS, but Oakland Berkeley LL (hills people, mainly), which I know well, is dominated by coaches committed to moving players around as much as feasible. ASs and traveling teams are different stories. Thats where the pre HS training gets done. At traveling tournaments half the kids have four bats sticking out of their bags. Ten yrs ago, such bats cost over $300 a piece.
Hawaii is really big on Little league also.

Cool story in WNBA draft. #8 pick is Alissa Pili from Utah. She has 8 siblings including one who is D Lineman for Fins, born and raised in Anchorage Alaska, of Indigenous and Samoan parentage. Saw an interview w her on Pac12 Net, and she said she started playing basketball at age 8 with family, and she described family b-ball as more like football. Listed as 6-2 very solidly built and is crafty inside w nice outside touch too. Cool player.
In HS she threw discus and shot, played volleyball basketball and wrestling. Wished more kids today did as many multiple sports. Last college season she averaged 21 a game, shot 55% overall 40 % from 3 and 82% FTs. Good luck to her.
